Discovering the Ocean's Wonders: A

FAMILY ADVENTURE AWAITS AT THE UTRGV COASTAL STUDIES LAB

For fifty years, the UTRGV Coastal Studies Lab (CSL) has been a pivotal part of the university’s School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences, conducting extensive research on coastal and marine environments. Yet, its mission doesn't stop at scientific discovery - the CSL is also committed to sparking public interest in marine conservation and science, making it an ideal destination for family visits.

Visitors can explore a range of exhibits, from beautiful aquatic displays to informative exhibits showcasing local marine and coastal life. Children can marvel at the vibrant array of fish species or get up close with sea stars and hermit crabs.

One of the CSL's most engaging features is its touch tanks, a definite hit among younger visitors. Here, children can safely interact with various marine species, providing an immersive and sensory learning experience that brings the wonders of the ocean right to their fingertips.

But the CSL's appeal extends beyond its indoor offerings. Its location at Isla Blanca Park, a stone's throw away from the Gulf of Mexico, means that a visit can easily be combined with a day at the beach. Families can participate in guided beach explorations led by the CSL's staff, unearthing the hidden gems of South Padre Island's shoreline and learning about the marine creatures that call the beach their home.

If you’re visiting the Island during the popular Discovery Channel show “Shark Week,” stop by for special presentations about sharks and their importance to the ecosystem. On July 10th, 12th, and 13th, visitors can also participate in a shark dissection.

In today's digital age, where screens often eclipse experiences, the UTRGV CSL offers families a welcome break. It invites parents and children alike to reconnect with nature and explore the magic of the marine world together. So, if you're planning your next family adventure, consider a stop at the UTRGV CSL - where the ocean's wonders are waiting to be discovered.
