MICHAEL JACKSON IS BACK. Not that he ever really went away. Now, the unparalleled artistry of the greatest entertainer of all time comes to Orange County as MJ, the Tony® Awardwinning new musical arrives in Segerstrom Hall next month. Created by Tony Award-winning director/ choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, the musical centers on rehearsals for the 1992 Dangerous World Tour, offering a rare look at the creative mind and collaborative spirit that catapulted Michael Jackson into legendary status. There are some three dozen Jackson songs in the show and high-voltage production numbers. “Wheeldon creates a jaw-dropping spectacle that includes Jackson’s signature moves,” says the Chicago Sun TImes. “When everyone on stage is in motion, it’s a breathtaking vision of athleticism and grace.” There are hardly words that can describe Jackson’s colossal fame around the world, and his music continues to be popular today. “His music and dancing are elemental to modern pop,” says the Guardian. “It’s a rollicking parade of hits, vocal high points … as MJ begins to reflect on his life.” This is Jackson before he was nearly crushed by personal events that became public. MJ goes beyond the singular moves and signature sound of its star. It begins in the rehearsal space where Michael and his dancers, back-up singers and band are preparing for

the world tour that will last more than a year. Amidst music that includes iconic hits such as “Bad,” “Thriller,” and “Smooth Criminal,” Michael begins to think about his childhood and how he became so enormously famous. With flashbacks and actors who perform as youngster and teen Michael, he watches himself become a superstar, dealing with his forceful father and overtaking his older brothers in the fame game. Wheeldon makes the transitions smooth and seamless. Forget all the stories and rumors about Jackson. This is Michael as everyone remembers at his best: the songs, the dancing, the voice. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the man in the mirror. SEGERSTROM HALL March 19–31 | Tickets start at $39

CAN YOU HELP who you fall in love with? In the 19th-century ballet Coppélia, a toy maker creates a beautiful life-size doll so perfect she appears to be real. So real, in fact, that a lad passing by sees her in the window and falls in love. His fiancée is not happy about this. He ends up feeling very foolish when he discovers the truth and renews his devotion to his real—live—love. But what about today, when materials and artificial intelligence can potentially be used to create a perfect person? Les Ballets de MonteCarlo returns to the Center with Coppél-i.A. Jean-Christophe Maillot, choreographerdirector of the company, uses the Coppélia story as a base to explore the development of artificial intelligence. He asks the question: Is the ideal romantic partner really the flesh-and-blood creature we have always known? What happens when our actions are motivated by love of something that may not be what you think it is? Maillot has been leading the ballet company since 1993, when he was appointed by H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover. His ideas and style have often challenged audiences, and he likes that. Maillot uses a strong ballet technique “without being old-fashioned,” he says, mixing it with his contemporary sensibility. “My style is a very tiny border between ballet and contemporary,” he told The Guardian (UK). “It’s not a bland center ground, but a way of bringing a new energy, a new possibility to ballet. A way of melting the choreography so that it is more about storytelling than technique.” His dancers are equally comfortable in both dance slippers and pointe shoes. “I love to give to the audience a moment where there is a kind of reality onstage that has nothing to do with the reality in the world,” he told the Jerusalem Post. That is certainly the case with Coppél-i.A. It’s about a couple whose love is challenged by the appearance of artificial intelligence in the shape of a beautiful woman, and what happens when this new AI creature

learns what lies outside the workshop. We are reminded that, just as humans will not always behave as predicted, we may face the same conundrum with robots. Unlike the original ballet’s creature, who is just a doll, Coppél-i.A. is a character in her own right. As she mixes in with humans, will she discover how to feel some sort of love? Would Maillot prefer to work with an AI robot rather than a live dancer? “Every choreographer dreams of the ideal ballerina who would perform their work perfectly,” says Maillot. “But I think I would tire of that very quickly. Such a ballerina could never have the emotions like the artists I work with every day. I need to create emotional ties. I need to share ties of friendship with my dancers. I don’t think AI could ever provide that.” He continues, “The art of choreography will always require a soul of flesh and sweat to personify emotions convincingly.” With stunning costumes and futuristic scenery, Coppél-i.A. will be an exciting experience as Maillot gives a glimpse of our possible future.

How to celebrate a Broadway birthday HOW WOULD YOU Like to attend a celebration of someone’s birthday and find that actually, you are the recipient of some fantastic presents? When the Center celebrates A Broadway Birthday next month, the audience will be gifted a wonderful and tuneful concert of some of the most beloved music of our time. It’s a delightful coincidence that Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and the late Stephen Sondheim share a birthday on March 22. Although they each hail from opposite sides of the Atlantic and have different musical styles, both are famous for their way with a song, especially for a Broadway show. That’s something our patrons appreciate. For this special evening the Center has invited some of the best Broadway stars, including Tony-winning legend Betty Buckley, TV star Matthew Morrison, Liz Callaway, Alex Joseph Grayson (direct from the much-acclaimed revival of Parade), and Center favorites Aaron Lazar and Kerry O’Malley, who recently starred together in the Cabaret Series. Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber composed the music for some of the world’s most famous and beloved musicals, starting with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in 1968. His most famous works are probably Cats, Evita, and The Phantom of the Opera. (The latter his been presented at the Center at least five times.) Phantom is still running in His Majesty’s Theater in London, where it opened in 1986. Prior to the Covid pandemic, Webber had shows running on Broadway continually for 41 years. Webber’s shows attract top talent. When Phantom premiered, it starred Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. In Cats, the plum role of Grizabella (who sings “Memory”) went to Betty Buckley on Broadway and Elaine Page in London. Page was also the original Eva Peron in Evita, while Patti LuPone starred in the role on Broadway.
On the other side of the Pond, Sondheim was revolutionizing the musical. “Once you connect with Sondheim, you’re his forever,” writes Sophie Gilbert in the Atlantic. “Sondheim’s work takes the typically unseen—aging women, married couples, bystanders—and forces them into the spotlight.” He has a witty and more realistic take on subjects, something his audiences can usually relate to. He didn’t write a lot of straightforward romantic songs. Sondheim first came to attention when he wrote the lyrics for West Side Story. (He later lamented the lyrics for “I Feel Pretty.” ) He followed this with Gypsy. The late Elaine Stritch, an original cast member of another of his musicals, Company, practically owned the song “Ladies Who Lunch” sung by her character Joanne. Patti LuPone later took on that role. At Sondheim’s 80th birthday televised celebration, LuPone sang the song while several other singers, including Stritch, sat behind her on stage. When she finished Stritch gave her a big hug as they bonded over their love of Sondheim’s sharp observations. The song was a poke at rich ladies who seem to have nothing to do but have long lunches with other rich friends, rather than doing something useful; a typical Sondheim view. This special one-night-only event will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Southern Californians who love Broadway. It’s sure to be a sell out, so get your tickets now. Castalian Quartet: “Full of poetry, joy, and sorrow…”
Photo: Paul Marc Mitchell
YOU DON’T USUALLY FIND string quartets described as “feisty,” but according to The Guardian (UK), that’s a good way to label the Castalian String Quartet. They “seem a feisty group, with a real personality and strong interpretive ideas.” That’s not a bad reputation for a young quartet to have. You can hear for yourself when the ensemble makes its Center debut March 2. Pianist Sir Stephen Hough will be on the bill performing a composition of his own with the quartet. One of the most distinctive artists of his generation, Sir Stephen Hough combines a distinguished career as a pianist. Hough was the first classical performer to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship and in 2014 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) and knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honors in 2022. A prolific composer and writer, Sir Stephen has composed works for orchestra, choir, chamber ensemble, organ, harpsichord, and solo piano, and has contributed articles to
numerous publications. “Wonderful, almost miraculous,” says The Times (UK). “There isn’t a color, weight of attack or nuance of phrasing or rhythm that passes Hough by.” The Castalian String Quartet is gaining a reputation as one of the most exciting and in-demand quartets on the world stage. It formed in 2011 and has shown its mettle with the prizes and awards the ensemble has received, including first prize at the 2015 Lyon International Chamber Music Competition in 2016, a prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship and were named Young Artist of the Year by the Royal Philharmonic Society. The group is the Hans Keller String Quartet in Residency at Oxford University. It goes without saying that they have performed at the leading concert venues throughout Europe, as well as New York’s Carnegie Hall. They are frequent guests at Wigmore Hall in London and have recorded on the Wigmore Hall Live label. According to the Observer (UK), they are gaining renown for interpretations “full of poetry, joy and sorrow, realized to such perfection.” At a concert at last year’s Edinburgh International Festival, The Arts Desk said of their performance, “This concert contained music from the 1820s, 1920s and 2020s, and each piece had its own carefully constructed, bespoke sound world. Nothing was taken for granted here, and there were no short cuts. That’s what made it so powerful.” Of another performance, The Times (UK) says, “This energetic young quartet played dark, searching Mozart and gloriously textured Dvořák, with sensational breadth and beauty.” Don’t miss the ensemble’s Center debut with the sensational Stephen Hough. This is a concert that will prompt a standing ovation. SAMUELI THEATER March 2 | Tickets start at $39

Michael Bublé helps make Candlelight Concert glow THE 49TH ANNUAL Candlelight Concert, Orange County’s gala holiday event, was a celebration of the arts in the county. This year’s event raised $5.3 million to support the Center’s nonprofit artistic, education, and community initiatives and was chaired by co-chairs Sam Tang and Molly Jolly. Attendees received a gift from the presenting sponsor, Lugano Diamonds. The evening’s entertainer was the incomparable Michael Bublé, a five-time Grammy winner and humanitarian. For the first time, the Candlelight entertainer took part in a 90-minute masterclass the previous day for aspiring talented high school students from historically underserved local schools. After the concert, guests made their way to the stage for dinner. It was decorated as a polished supper club, with 20 feet of large floral wallpaper and beautiful hanging displays of gold magnolia leaves. Silver pendant lights hanging from the ceiling created an intimate atmosphere. Post-supper dancing began with the VIVA band. For those who wanted to relax and visit with friends, the Coffee and Conversation lounge had an onsite barista. Next year’s Candlelight Concert will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Save the date: Friday, December 6, 2024.

won two Golden Globe Awards including Best Original Song. It has also garnered nominations for three Critics’ Choice Awards, four BAFTA nominations, an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song and its soundtrack has also been nominated for a GRAMMY Award. TIM RICE (Lyrics) has worked in music, theatre and films since 1965 when he met Andrew Lloyd Webber, a fellow struggling songwriter. Rather than pursue Tim’s ambitions to write rock or pop songs they turned their attention to Andrew’s obsession – musical theatre. Their first collaboration (lyrics by Tim, music by Andrew) was based on the life of Dr. Barnardo, the Victorian philanthropist, The Likes Of Us. Their next three works together were much more successful – Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. Tim has also worked with other distinguished popular composers such as Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), Alan Menken (Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast), Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (Chess), and Stuart Brayson (From Here to Eternity). Tim founded his own cricket team in 1973 and was President of MCC in 2002. He was appointed President of the London Library in 2017 in succession to Sir Tom Stoppard. He has won several awards (an EGOT, etc.), mainly for the wrong thing or for simply turning up. Since his arrival in America, Lebo has attracted music industry giants such as Quincy Jones, Jimmy Cliff and Hans Zimmer as mentors, allies and collaborators. American Ballet Theatre Woolf Works Following in the tradition of ABT’s Whipped Cream, Of Love and Rage, and Like Water for Chocolate, the company brings the North American premiere of Woolf Works. Inspired by the writings of Virginia Woolf, Woolf Works is an ambitious three-act ballet stunningly choreographed by Wayne McGregor, with a luminous original score by Max Richter. Widely considered one of the most important 20th century novelists, Virginia Woolf’s writings have continued to speak to generations. In Woolf Works, award-winning British choreographer and director Wayne McGregor has recreated the emotions, themes, and fluid style of three of Virginia Woolf’s novels: Mrs. Dalloway, Orlando, and The Waves, capturing the spirit of Woolf’s writing while delighting audiences with its sheer beauty. Originally commissioned by the Royal Ballet, Woolf Works premiered to outstanding critical acclaim. The full-length contemporary ballet won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production, and McGregor was awarded the Critics Circle National Dance Award for Best Classical Choreography for the work. JAZZ PIANIST Fred Hersch makes a welcome return to the Jazz Club next month with special guest string quartet ETHEL. Go ahead, make those Fred and Ethel jokes, but this will be an extraordinary performance. Allaboutjazz.com praises Hersch for “the complete ease and mastery with which he integrates the strings into a very tight ensemble concept.” There is no doubting Hersch’s extraordinary talent. “When it comes to the art of solo piano in jazz, there are two classes of performers: Fred Hersch and everybody else.” He began playing the piano at age 4 and at age 10 was winning national competitions. It’s not easy to break into that world, but Hersch was so good that as soon as he graduated from the New England Conservatory the institution appointed him as a jazz piano instructor. He has been on their jazz studies faculty since 1980, as well as teaching at The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music. But it was in an altogether accidental way that Hersch found himself a jazz performance career. He was in the audience for a concert led by famed bandleader Art Pepper, who had a hired local pianist to play with the band for that engagement. Unsatisfied with this musician, Pepper fired him on the spot in the middle of the show, and then used the old “Is there a pianist in the house?” line. Hersch bounded up and his career was on its way. Hersch is not just a soloist with 15 Grammy nominations under his belt. It’s a career that
“Jazz for the 21st century” covers almost everything. He is an influential force who has shaped the course of jazz piano over more than three decades as an improviser, composer, educator, bandleader, collaborator and recording artist. He plays with a trio and has worked with instrumentalists and vocalists in jazz, classical music, and Broadway. No wonder Hersch is called “an elegant force of musical invention” by the Los Angeles Times, and “a living legend” by the New Yorker. As a composer he has recorded more than 70 of his own works: “Jazz for the 21st century,” says The New York Times. Grammy-winning ETHEL has played with musicians as disparate as Yo-Yo Ma, the New York Chamber Orchestra, Sheryl Crow, and Roger Daltrey. At the heart of ETHEL is a collaborative spirit. This group performs its own original music as well as that by contemporary composers, championing art and music of today. “For nearly 18 years… ETHEL has been exploding the boundaries of conventional quartet music by combining its classical training with rock ’n’ roll enthusiasm and musical traditions from around the world,” says the New Orleans Advocate. The group has performed in the leading concert halls around the world, but also takes inspiration in cross-fertilization and collaboration, working with theater directors and choreographers, as well as ambitious multimedia projects and documentaries. Few musicians demonstrate the rapidly blurring lines between genres as comprehensively as string quartet ETHEL does,” says Time Out New York. Hersch titled his 2017 memoir Good Things Happen Slowly. We certainly have had a long wait for Hersch’s return to the Jazz Club. Don’t let it pass you by. Fred and ETHEL will be an extraordinary pairing. SAMUELI THEATER March 9 | Tickets start at $69

Where the only focus is curing cancer
HOPE
FIRST
Cancer is never easy, but it starts with Hope. As a leader in exceeding national survival rates, City of Hope is all-in on ending cancer. Together, our 600 cancer physicians, 1,000 researchers and scientists, and our 800 annual cancer-focused clinical trials are what drive us forward. First in prevention. First in treatment. First in survival. When it comes to cancer, it’s Hope First.
