Dining

Hollywood’s newly

dubbed Vinyl District is experiencing a dining renaissance. Restaurants helmed by culinary artists such as Lincoln Carson are breathing new life into an area once celebrated for its punk music scene.

Carson and Ten Five Hospitality Group recently unveiled Mes Amis at the Thompson Hollywood near celebrity-strewn Mother Wolf and historic Farmers Market. Michelin Guide added the cool brasserie to its Los Angeles list in August.

A designed collaboration of Martin Brudnizki Design Studio and Mes Amis creative director Bernadette Blanc, the 6,000-square-foot space blends elements of Parisian and modern California aesthetics.

Natural oak floors and marble tables are juxtaposed with a mirrored bar, industrial ceiling and vintage photos of celebratory Hollywood and L.A. nights. Elsewhere are backlit amber crittall screens and terrace garden spaces.

Carson was formerly a pastry chef for Michael Mina’s restaurant group, opening Bon Temps in the Arts District. At Mes Amis, he oversees both the savory and sweet sides of the menu.

Shellfish plateaus of blue prawns, dayboat scallops, Littleneck clams and oysters on the half shell adorn tables around the dining room. Among the bistro-inspired entrees are smoked Liberty duck,

Dessert standouts include a gateaux St. Honore with pecan mousseline and a decidedly delicate chocolate soufflé. During the warmer months, which in Southern California extend into fall, a Harry’s Berries strawberry pavlova is enhanced with rose geranium and creme fraiche sorbet.

The wine list features mostly French and Californian producers. Among Franco-American cocktails is the Braddock, with rye whiskey, Dubonnet Rouge, herbs de Provence and bitters.

As Carson envisioned it, Mes Amis “captures the vibrancy of French café culture and celebrates the joy of food, drink and the company of others.”

Mes Amis, which translates “my friends,” not only succeeds in exuding a celebratory atmosphere, it also marks a new beginning for the chef and several members of the team he worked with at the now-gone Bon Temps.

The Mes Amis experience continues at Bar Lis, the property’s

rooftop venue.

Carson oversees the menu there, too, enjoyed amid views of the Hollywood Hills. It’s just another way for him to keep the party going.
