The Band’s Visit comes to Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre

MUSICAL

UNDER THE DESERT SKY BASED ON THE 2007 Israeli film of the same name, The Band’s Visit checks in at the Dolby Theatre Nov. 30-Dec. 19. The show won 10 Tony Awards in 2018—making it one of the most Tony-winning musicals in history—as well as the 2019 Grammy Award for best musical theater album. It also garnered top musical theater honors at the Obie and New York Drama Critics’ Circle awards. The show follows an Egyptian police band arriving in Israel to perform a concert. When the band members find themselves lost in a remote village after a mix-up at the border, a cafe owner and her fellow locals take them in for the night. Under the spell of the desert sky, with its music perfuming the air, the band brings the town to life in unexpected ways—a glimmering and hopeful spark of shared humanity in the war-torn Middle East. Baroque Gems IN ADDITION TO its regular five-concert season, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra showcases its members in more intimate chamber presentations. The first of six programs features concertos for violin, oboe, flute and harpsichord Dec. 4 at the Huntington’s Rothenberg Hall. The series is curated by concertmaster Margaret Batjer and performed without conductor. “Under those circumstances,” Batjer says, “communication between the musicians becomes

paramount and is almost palpable, making for particularly exciting performances.” Works include the Concerto in A by Seixas with harpsichord soloist Patricia Mabee; Vivaldi’s Oboe Concerto in F with Claire Brazeau; and Pergolesi’s Violin Concerto in B Flat with Tereza Stanislav. Haydn’s first string quartet and Telemann’s Concerto in A minor for diverse soloists add Jason Issokson, violin, and Sandy Hughes, flute. 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino, 213.622.7001, laco.org

INSPIRED BY THE Universal Pictures/ Working Title holiday film Love Actually—and the biggest hit in the Wallis’ history—the multimedia celebration Love Actually Live returns to the venue Nov. 27-Dec. 31. During the show’s runs in 2018 and 2019, nearly 30,000 people flocked to the Bram Goldsmith Theater at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. Its staging and video design seamlessly inter-

twine film and live action in a three-dimensional London setting. The hit soundtrack includes “Christmas is All Around,” “Trouble with Love,” and Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now.” Love Actually Live is adapted and directed by Anderson Davis with musical supervision and arrangements by Jesse Vargas; it’s co-produced by Shane Scheel and the Wallis. 9390 N. Tony Awardsweeping Moulin Rouge! The Musical

Moulin Rouge! The Musical, the Australian-produced theatrical adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 Oscar-winning film, won 10 Tony Awards this year including best musical as well as best scenery, costume, lighting, sound, choreography, orchestration and direction in a musical; Aaron Tveit won for best actor in a musical. “A keg-stand when the keg is filled with absinthe, a banquet of drug-laced truffles, a riot, a wallow, a leg show and an all-time greatest hits radio countdown run amok, Moulin Rouge has arrived on Broadway,” writes The Guardian. Specifically, it’s arrived at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The show presents a world of splendor, romance, excess, glitz and grandeur remixed as a mash-up extravaganza of the greatest pop hits of the last 50 years. Alex Timbers directs; book is by John Logan, choreography by Sonya Tayeh and music supervision and arrangements by Justin Levine. The original Broadway cast recording has also been nominated for a Grammy Award for best musical theater album.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES MAMMA MIA! – Mother of the Jukebox Musical?

Some say MAMMA MIA! was the beginning of the “Jukebox Musical” – the type of show that takes pre-existing songs and strings them together in a newly-created plot. For example, MAMMA MIA! takes ABBA songs and folds them into a new plot about a daughter’s wedding. Similar shows: JERSEY BOYS (Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ songs tell the story of the band’s rise) and MOULIN ROUGE (songs from various singers – from Beyoncé to the Beatles – serve a plot about Parisian bohemians). These shows differ from traditional musicals that use songs written specifically for their plots – shows that range from SOUTH PACIFIC to WICKED. But MAMMA MIA! (2001) was not the first show to use the “jukebox” approach. Hollywood did it decades earlier. The best example is SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN (1952), in which existing ’20s & ‘30s hits were folded into a new story about early Hollywood. Other examples: AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (1951) uses Gershwin songs in a new plot set in post-war Paris, and ROCKETMAN (2018) uses Elton John’s songs to tell the story of his life. However, while it may not be the first jukebox musical, MAMMA MIA! is easily the most financially successful, playing the world over for years. With this talented cast and creative team… you’re about to find out why! BT McNicholl Producing Artistic Director La Mirada Theatre

HOME IMPROVEMENT PERFORMING-ARTS VENUES ARE BACK—AND BETTER THAN EVER. / BY SHERRY STERN / SAY HELLO TO THEATER post-lockdown. First thing you can do is breathe easy—literally. ♦ During the darkest of days, venues up and down Southern California quietly found a silver lining to empty stages: They used the downtime to embark on much-needed updates and, most pressing, to enhance air quality. ♦ Astonishingly, the theaters undertook these projects when they were at their most vulnerable, in a period of evaporating revenue and with a finish line that kept moving. ♦ The focus at all of them: how best to welcome back audiences. At Geffen Playhouse, for instance, the desire was for people to find the physical space better than when they last saw it in spring 2020.

Ambassador Auditorium. At Geffen Playhouse: updated fountain, right, and Founders Room, below opposite.

“The feeling,” says Gil Cates, Jr. the Geffen’s executive director, “was that when we get back to doing live theater that it doesn’t feel like we just flipped on the lights, replaced a few light bulbs and moved some of the cobwebs out of the way. “We want people to feel like, wow!” That meant projects from redoing the landscaping, refinishing the lobby floors and adding an entry door off the Founders Room patio down to replacing door handles and repairing water damage. At La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, producing artistic

director BT McNicholl recognized the importance of seizing the moment. “We had to take advantage of this opportunity,” McNicholl says. “It’s the first time the building has been shut down in 44 years, the first time we’ve had an extended period where we could actually work on the building and the facility.” Health and safety standards topped the lists everywhere. Performing-arts spaces of all sizes, from Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa to Pasadena Playhouse to the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, reopen with

upgraded ventilation systems. Outside experts and advisors were called in; suddenly, artistic directors knew an alphabet soup of requirements and recommendations. HVAC, IAQ, UL, GBAC, HIPA and MERV became part of everyday conversation. (“Before this, the only Merv I could think of was Merv Griffin,” one theater leader jokes.) For the audience, it all spells healthier buildings. At Pasadena’s 48-year-old Ambassador Auditorium, improving the air dovetailed with a massive environmentally green retrofit that had already been in the works. The

programs can be accessed by scanning a QR code on smart phones. All Music Center, Geffen Playhouse and Segerstrom restrooms now have touchless faucets. Theaters everywhere underwent deep cleaning and installed hand sanitizer dispensers. La Mirada Theatre updated its rehearsal space, refreshed its backstage and brightened its lobby, taking a year to beta test signage and hold what McNicholl calls trash can and tablecloth auditions for their replacements. A new patio with dining options opens presently. The Broad Stage in Santa Monica reupholstered its seats and replaced its sound system. Irvine Barclay Theatre in Irvine installed new seats and carpeting. La Jolla Playhouse near San Diego replaced its rigging system and installed a new fire curtain in its Mandell Weiss Theatre. For some organizations, financing was a creative endeavor. At East West Players, a grant from the Ahmanson Foundation for facility upgrades was adjusted to pay for an essential revamp of its 23-year-old sound system. That project could

venue’s sustainability renovation increases power efficiency to such an extent that, over time, the $4.5 million cost will be made up by energy savings. The shutdown allowed the undertaking to be completed quickly; it was finished in less than a year. “Because of COVID, we chose to condense the timeline,” says Bill Tilney, executive director of the Ambassador Foundation of Pasadena. “This has afforded us the opportunity to work on key components of the building that haven’t been touched since 1974.” Fresh air now flows into the auditorium every six minutes compared to 24 minutes previously. “The Ambassador improvements are going to save tons of energy and bring a beautiful comfort to the people who are in here,” says project engineer Dereck Rascon, Sr., adding that electrical usage will also be cut down. “Our carbon footprint is going to be reduced.” Also in the name of safety and health, digital ticketing has all but replaced paper at most venues;

only have been accomplished during the extended shutdown. “We were suddenly, shall we say, blessed with an open calendar?” muses Andy Lowe, director of production and casting. The modern sound system will enhance the experience, which previously varied depending on where the audience member was sitting, Lowe says. Some changes are purely aesthetic. Coincidentally, three theaters updated and improved operations of neglected fountains, all projects dear to the venues’ leadership. The Ambassador’s treasured egret fountain returns to its original bronze; fountains outside the Geffen and La Mirada will run water as initially designed. For McNicholl, improving the entrance was a necessity. “I do think that the show begins at the curb,” he says. Let the curtain rise on a new act for Southern California’s theater and performing arts.

Now Playing on the Patio AMONG THE PASADENA Playhouse’s many virtues is a new one that shares its inviting patio. Basque-inspired Saso opened during challenging times in a space where other respectable restaurants had failed, but its prospects appear bright, thanks to its well-executed cuisine and the charm of the Playhouse itself, a landmark founded a century ago, not long after the 1918 pandemic. Saso’s dining room, in the structure adjoining the Spanish Colonial Revival-style theater, offers generously spaced booths amid colorful

murals. For many of the guests, the more coveted tables are those that spill out onto the Playhouse’s stone-clad patio, which features an ornate fountain, an ancient tree and lights strewn overhead. Patio seating is on directors’ chairs. Chef/partner Dominique Crisp developed his deft touch with seafood at Santa Monica’s Blue Plate Oysterette and Silver Lake’s L&E Oyster Bar—skills that he has only amplified at Saso. The son of an Oregon winemaker, Crisp is clearly passionate about his craft and is building something really worth-

while in the district, which was recently renamed Playhouse Village. One could easily compose an entire meal from the bistro’s diverse selection of pintxos, as tapas are known in Spain’s Basque region. They include organic handcrafted sourdough with tomato jam; prized jamón ibérico dusted with orange zest and served with vegetable crudités; grilled octopus; and a quintet of spherical croketas filled with whatever inspires the chef and a velvety béchamel sauce. Chimichurri and horseradish enliven skewers of wagyu beef bites; deli-

Wagyu beef tartare with anchovy aioli and trout roe

cately fried oysters with anchovy and peppers, plated with a saffron gribiche sauce, may be the standout. Saso’s crudo bar turns out items such as freshly shucked oysters and salmon carpaccio; a beautiful disk of anchovy aiolilaced wagyu beef tartare is artistically crowned with trout roe, chives and edible flowers and plated with sourdough crisps. Larger plates include a whole fish basquaise— usually striped bass from Baja—simply prepared with crispy garlic, chili and olive oil; it emerges from the Josper charcoal oven that Crisp installed. Also offered are Navarra-style steak and a crispy-skinned seared Ora king salmon plated with fennel, citrus and charred avocado. The medium-rare salmon, from the same Josper oven and served without sauce, is a testament to quality ingredients treated with respect.

Cocktails are imaginative; among unexpected elements are shiitake mushroom-infused spirits and ice cubes tinted black with squid ink. Saso’s short but intriguing wine list has a few Basquecountry bottles priced at under $50. Desserts include a version of torrijas, a deceptively decadent Spanish-style French toast served with housechurned rosemary-vanilla ice cream; a chocolate pot de crème is topped with maple-infused cream and dusted with paprika. Saso is one of several restaurants contributing to the recent revitalization of Pasadena’s dining scene; other notable additions include the Agnes Restaurant & Cheesery, which also includes a wine shop, and Perle, an excellent French bistro that debuted last year. 37 S. OBISPO GETAWAY Chic new hotels transform the Central Coast city from drive-by to check-in. / by benjamin epstein /

San Luis Obispo has always been at a crossroads—literally, at the intersection of California’s Highway 1 and U.S. Highway 101. Best known as a college town, it’s roughly halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles; most travelers think of it as an offramp to and from Big Sur or wine country. In fact, the city, often abbreviated to “SLO” by locals, offers one of the state’s most vibrant and walkable downtowns, full of eateries and drinkeries and hip upscale shopping, plus a Spanish mission for history buffs, galleries for art lovers and a renowned farmers market. Now there are two new reasons to take that offramp. Both are ultra-cool luxury properties that opened within blocks, and months, of each other.

Living room, Hotel SLO suite

Hotel San Luis Obispo, almost universally referred to as Hotel SLO, opened in late 2019. It’s steps from the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, which marks its 250th anniversary next year, in the heart of histor-

ical Chinatown. Chinese artistic and cultural elements can be seen throughout the hotel’s architecture and design. For starters, there’s a neon “Chop Suey” sign on the side of the building. Reflecting the area’s

rugged ranch and coastal landscape, its public spaces and nearly 80 rooms use warm woods, terra cotta, Corten steel, succulents and heritage olives in a modern context. The hotel is managed by Piazza Hospitality, known for Hotel Healdsburg and others in Sonoma wine country. Chef Ryan Fancher heads up two onsite restaurants: Piadina, offering farm-fresh Cal-Ital dishes; and Ox + Anchor, a contemporary take on the classic steakhouse. The Piadina lunch/dinner menu is served throughout the hotel: in the gar-

den courtyard and S.Low lobby bar; and on the High Bar rooftop terrace, which has a bocce court and herb garden. Particularly memorable are pizzas such as one with blue cheese, Brussels sprouts, bacon and Bautista Farms lettuces. The 50-foot, garden-terrace swimming pool has cocktail and food service, too. For an elevated meal, Ox + Anchor—arguably the city’s finest-dining destination—presents the local terroir both on the plate and in the glass, the latter Central Coast wines, of course. Decor merges contemporary with Spanish Mission and 19th-century industrial influences. The hotel is filled with cool furnishings and provocative art. Even before Hotel Cerro opened in early 2020, National Geographic Traveler named it one of the world’s best new green hotels; eco-conscious details marry luxury and sustainability. The raised-bed Edible Garden, on a second-floor terrace, is the property’s heart; its organic herbs and vegetables are destined for the hotel’s Brasserie SLO. Guests can forage, too, but most simply enjoy a glass of wine in the verdant space.
