Dear Patrons,
Summer has arrived at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, bringing an energizing season of innovation, culture, and community. We are delighted to welcome you to a month filled with inspiring artistic experiences throughout our June programming.
The month begins with the timeless charm of The Sound of Music, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s beloved classic musical of courage, music, and following one’s heart.
After more than a decade, the Judy Morr Theater is transformed by Circa: Eternity, a rare opportunity to experience immersive performance in setting unlike any other. This acrobatic theater work invites audience into an up close, deeply resonant world of soaring lifts, suspended bodies, and moments of profound stillness, a poetic exploration of the human condition elevated to spiritual reflection. In celebration of Black Music Month and Juneteenth, the South Side Symphony presents Anime Juke Jam, a vibrant fusion of live orchestra, hip-hop, and anime soundtracks honoring Black voices and cultural expression.

Our resident company, Pacific Symphony, also returns with Windborne’s Music of Journey, an electrifying symphonic rock experience.
And on warm summer Friday nights, gather with family and friends at the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza for the 6th annual Summer Sounds, our free outdoor concert series celebrating the colorful music scene of Southern California.
Thank you for being part of the Center’s vibrant artistic community.

Die-hard Harry Potter fans will probably already have their tickets for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The winner of six Tony® Awards including Best Play, it’s coming to the Center in July. But this play is not just for Harry Potter fans.
“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child isn’t just for Potterheads; it’s for anyone who loves a good story, compelling characters, and an awe-inspiring production,” says Broadwayinbound.com. “This play is not just a milestone but a magical experience waiting to be explored.”
But what if you never read the books or didn’t see any of the movies? (Yes, there are still a few of us who can make that claim.) It can be confusing, especially if you didn’t spend your formative years at a traditional British boarding school. Not to worry. We have provided a QR code (in the purple circle, far right) that will tell you everything you need to catch up on the story. And, no doubt, you have many friends who would be happy to chip in with a fact or two. They will tell you about the different houses, provide you with the Hogwarts school necktie (worn by both boys and girls!) sign you up for their Quidditch team, and give you a glass of refreshing butterbeer. Then they will accompany you to (fictional) Platform 9¾ at London’s (real) King’s Cross station for the train to school.
The story (the short version)
It’s a gripping storyline and emotional journey. The original series of novels follows Harry Potter, an orphan who discovers on his 11th birthday that he is a wizard and has been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
At Hogwarts, Harry meets his new best friends—Ron and Hermione—and makes an enemy in his antagonistic classmate Draco Malfoy. Harry learns to wave a wand, ride a broom, and play the popular wizarding sport Quidditch. The story unfolds over seven books covering Harry’s journey from childhood to adulthood and explores themes of friendship, bravery, love, and the battle between good and evil.
The last chapter of the final book takes place 19 years later. Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Draco are now parents, embarking on a new journey as their children begin their own stories at Hogwarts.
But when Harry Potter’s headstrong son Albus befriends the son of his fiercest rival, Draco Malfoy, it sparks an unbelievable new journey for them all, with the power to change the past and future forever. Prepare for a mind-blowing race through time, spectacular spells, and an epic battle, all brought to life with the most astonishing theatrical magic ever seen on stage.
The onstage magic
“Since our starting point was about exploring the emotional lives of these characters, we didn’t want to high-tech it,” says Colin Callender, one of the show’s producers. “To be honest, we wanted sort of good, old-fashioned, as I call it, Victorian magic. Victorian theater tricks. Very simple, actually.”
Skylar Fox is an illusion and magic associate for the show. He explains they were very serious about getting the magic right. “We introduced the actors to this new skill set—to become magicians at the level of the top in the field, like David Copperfield. It’s not high tech. We’re doing tricks that have been around for a few hundred years.
“Much of it is done with rapid costume changes, trap doors, hidden wires, clever lighting, and guiding the audience’s focus with integrated sound and lighting cues. There are no video screens. We are delivering on the imagination of the viewers,” says Fox.
The cast also had to learn a new level of movement, including yoga and some martial arts, to perform things like all-out fights, .
“When I watched Harry and Draco rehearse their duel across the kitchen table, blasting each other with spells, flipping and flying through the air, the effect was startling—even in a brightly lit rehearsal room,” says an NPR reporter.
“It’s a Japanese theatrical form originally,” says movement director Steven Hoggett, who designed all the acrobatics the actors do on stage. “We call them ninjas, where there are performers that you can’t see in the space. We use this to create a battle that would seem impossible on a normal human body.”
The critics are raving
“Anyone still ready to dismiss Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as a cynical brand extension, or a theme-park ride on stage clearly hasn’t experienced the thrilling theatricality, the pulse-pounding storytelling vitality, and the unexpected emotional richness of this unmissable production, says the Hollywood Reporter. “The ecstatic hype … is amply justified.”
“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a fantastic show in both meanings of the word,” says the Los Angeles Times. “It’s pure, satisfying spectacle of a kind rarely seen onstage these days, a feat of theatrical wizardry that truly dazzles.” It continues, “Such beguiling amazements as these don’t arrive very often, and I encourage anyone who is looking for an infusion of theatrical magic to secure themselves a ticket as soon as possible.”
Variety is a big fan. “This is no time for bogus expressions of sophistication,” it says. “So, let’s just say: Hooray! With Harry Potter and the Cursed Child [for] bringing enchantment to a world that could really use a little magic right now.”
Before a performance, the NPR reporter spoke to a ticket holder who he said he had no idea what to expect on stage. “I intentionally did not research this at all, so I could be surprised.”
That may be the best way to watch the show.
Segerstrom Hall July 11–25

This season the Center is celebrating Latin jazz with our first artist in residence, Arturo O’Farrill. Born in Mexico, he’s a six-time GRAMMY® and two-time Latin GRAMMY® winner and celebrated jazz and Afro-Caribbean musician whose sounds reflect the cultural richness of our region. Orange County has one of the most diverse populations in California, and our jazz series reflects the cultural abundance that is all around us. O’Farrill will be involved not just on our stages but also in the community and throughout the county.
He brings his Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to the Renée and Henry Concert Hall to kick off the season with music that reflects both reverence and innovation. This 19-piece band merges AfroCuban rhythms, pan-Latin flavors and modern jazz accents for a dramatic concert. The orchestra has had a weekly standing engagement at the iconic New York City jazz club Birdland for more than 35 years, and at those shows the music “unleashes Latin grooves … with horns expanded and contracted,” says Jazz Times.

Saxophonist Isaiah Collier celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of John Coltrane with a program that channels the transcendent power of the great American maverick. “He has established himself as an heir apparent to the post-Coltrane sax tradition,” says The New York Times. Twenty-six-year-old Collier is a musical virtuoso in the truest sense of the phrase. He began playing saxophone at age 11, and his intuitive proficiency earned him attention early on. Ever since, his band Isaiah Collier and The Chosen Few has been turning ears.
There’s a regal, elegant manner to Isaiah’s stage presence. When not playing, he’s patiently waiting, listening to the musicians who accompany him. Isaiah explains that he’s never really hearing himself, he’s hearing others play: some people have fire, others have air. “That’s how I hear. There has to be a balance.”
Collier’s sound is a dynamic flurry of metaphors, yet he can hold back when necessary. He plays his influences, which he describes as a “sonic time machine; you can’t really put a time or destination on it.” As far as where he plans to take his music, Collier says, “I reach backwards, and forwards simultaneously when creating art and what is ahead of me is the past.”

Experience the timeless genius of Duke Ellington’s music with Jason Moran Presents Duke Ellington: My Heart Sings featuring Pacific Symphony. Brilliantly reimagined by pianist Moran, this is a celebration of the composer’s enduring legacy. The Los Angeles Times calls Moran, “A startlingly gifted pianist with a relentless thirst for experimentation,” while Bocamag.com says, “Most important is what Moran means to the piano. He has some really bold and brave ideas.”
Moran says of Ellington, “His scale is so expansive that there is not one aspect of my career that he has not influenced.” Both Ellington and Moran made the piano their favored instrument, and Moran likes to add his own personal artistry to Ellington’s pieces. “I am a student of Thelonious Monk, who was a student of Ellington,” says Moran. “Monk and Ellington were incredible stylists. I tailor the songs to fit the themes and modes of today.”
Following sold-out shows in Samueli Theater last season, vocalist Caity Gyorgy returns to the Center, this time with a new evening-length project created in collaboration with ETHEL string quartet. Together they bring warmth, clarity, and modern sensibility to the American Songbook. Known for her impeccable phrasing and playful approach to classic repertoire, Gyorgy bridges eras with ease—honoring the great jazz singers while crafting a sound distinctly her own.

Gyorgy writes most of her own songs. “They are seriously sophisticated, true jazz songs that have all the hallmarks of becoming standards,” says jazzwax.com. “When you add her confident fluid voice, you realize that Caity’s many musical talents and high taste level are truly remarkable.”
The GRAMMY®-winning, fearless string quartet ETHEL fuses virtuosic playing and innovation. Called “indefatigable and eclectic” by The New York Times, it has collaborated with an astonishingly diverse range of illustrious artists. The Ethel Quartet has performed at the Center several times, including with jazz pianist Fred Hersch two years ago.
This performance celebrates jazz as a shared experience—one rooted in connection and joy.
The season continues with another performance by Arturo—Copacabana Nights and this one is a bit different from his opening! Joined by a horn and rhythm section of local musicians, he will turn Samueli Theater into a 1950s nightclub in the manner and glamour of the Tropicana or Copacabana. The music will be electric and the dance floor will be on fire, whether you’re dancing the salsa, mambo, rumba or samba!
Lucia Gutierrez Rebolloso (who performs simply as LUCÍA) once said that she was “way too shy to be able to move on stage,” but watching Sarah Vaughan helped her beat her nerves. So it’s fitting that in 2022 she won the 11th annual Sarah

Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, or the SASSY Award for short (after Vaughan’s nickname). In the final round of the competition, she chose to sing “What a Difference a Day Makes.” It’s a famous jazz song popularized by Dinah Washington but was written in 1934 by Mexican composer Maria Grever. Lucía sang half the song in English and half in Spanish, creating a full circle of her heritage.
At her relatively young age of 26, her sound is mature, smooth and rich: you expect it to come from a singer with years of nightclubs behind her. She grew up listening to her parents’ records—a collection that ranged from salsa to Aretha Franklin—and says that at age 8 she was “obsessed with Nina Simone and Sarah Vaughan.” She earned a degree in jazz studies from the University of Veracruz and embarked on her career.
Lucía recorded her debut album a few years later and included a mix of American jazz and Spanish folk songs. While she adores jazz, she wants to share her Latin side. “On my debut album I wanted to fuse jazz with my own roots,” she says. “I wanted to generate a musical project that would paint an accurate picture of who I really am.” She will bring that sound to Samueli Theater.
In April Cuban Grammy-nominated pianist, composer, and producer Alfredo Rodriguez will share the stage with his fellow Cuban, percussionist Pedrito Martinez, for an evening of Afro-Cuban jazz. At school, Rodriguez was told by teachers that he had no talent. What did they know? When he was just 21 he was chosen to play at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. The late Quincy Jones was impressed with him
and became Rodriguez’s producer and mentor.
And just look at Rodriguez now. His shows are full of energy and he says he wants everyone up and dancing. “Conga, rumba and cha-cha are Cuban styles of music that have been around forever and we are melding it with funk and pop.” Driven by passion, cultural pride and a deep connection to his audience, Rodriguez continues to redefine what modern Afro-Cuban jazz can be. Percussion legend Pedrito Martinez will join Rodriguez for this exciting evening celebrating Afro-Cuban music. He won first prize in the prestigious Thelonius Monk Competition and featured in a film about Cuban music. Today, he plays with the big names in rock and jazz, including Wynton Marsalis, Paquito D’Rivera, Stefon Harris, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, and Eric Clapton. Don’t miss this pair who defy stylistic boundaries and captivate the soul.
Arturo O’Farrill returns with a special commission from the Center: Rumba Para Monk Revisited. This is his own tribute to Jerry González, who, with his band the Fort Apache Band, made the original recording of Rumba Para Monk in 1989 and changed the Latin jazz sound. They had a definite Afro-Cuban sound that blended salsa staples and a big helping of Thelonius Monk’s genius. O’Farrill and his ensemble will spotlight how González had the vision to expand the sound of modern jazz.
This exciting season showcases jazz music in so many ways and is reflective of is of the vibrant communities we serve. Whether you want sultry singing, instrumental riffs or celebrations of jazz greats, this is a season for everyone.

RICHARD RODGERS and OSCAR
HAMMERSTEIN II (Music and Lyrics). After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (composer, 1902–1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (librettist/ lyricist, 1895–1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in the American musical theater. Prior to his work with Hammerstein, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on a series of musical comedies that epitomized the wit and sophistication of Broadway in its heyday. Among their greatest successes were Pal Joey, On Your Toes, and Babes In Arms. Throughout the same era, Hammerstein brought new life to the operetta, culminating in the masterpiece Show Boat (music by Jerome Kern). Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, was also the first of a new genre, the musical play, blending Rodgers’s musical comedy style with Hammerstein’s innovations in operetta. Oklahoma! was followed by Carousel, State Fair (film 1945, 1962; Broadway 1996), Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Cinderella (television 1957, 1965, 1997; Broadway 2013), Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tonys, Oscars, GRAMMYs, Emmys, Pulitzers, and Olivier Awards.
HOWARD LINDSAY and RUSSEL CROUSE (Book). Lindsay and Crouse had one of the longest and most storied playwriting collaborations in theatrical history, lasting 32 years. Howard Lindsay was born in 1889 and

After serving in the Navy, he worked on New York newspapers, gaining his first renown through a signed column in the Post. In 1932 he became head of the publicity department for the Theatre Guild and in 1933 wrote his first Broadway show, collaborating with Corey Ford on the musical comedy Hold Your Horses. From 1934 on Crouse wrote only with Lindsay. Their hits include The Sound of Music (with a score by Rodgers & Hammerstein); Anything Goes and Red, Hot, and Blue (with scores by Cole Porter); Call Me Madam (score by Irving Berlin); the long-running play Life With Father (which originally starred Lindsay); the Pulitzer Prize-winning State of the Union; and The Great Sebastians, written for Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, the pre-eminent acting team of the day. What’s the most iconic piece of stagecraft in The Phantom of the Opera? Yes, the chandelier is amazing, but it really has to be the Phantom’s face mask.
At a recent episode of Antiques Roadshow in Britain, a woman showed up with a Phantom mask. She said her late husband has been in the original Phantom cast when it opened in 1986 in London’s West End. When he left the show, Michael Crawford, the original Phantom himself, gifted her husband one of his own masks. He also received a crew jacket and a script.
Stephen Lane, the expert looking at the mask, was amazed. It certainly did look worn. “There is some build-up of make-up,” he said, “so we can see this has been used for many, many shows.” He said that there would need to
be some sort of proof that Crawford actually wore it, rather than an understudy or stand-in. Without that proof, the mask was still worth around $15,000. With proof, they were looking at up to double that amount. A quick note from Michael would probably help! * * *
The Phantom is back to thrill audiences once again with a new, revitalized production. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary musical was rapturously received by London critics when it reopened in 2021, and the production has been getting rave reviews.
“This new tour doesn’t just restage Phantom—it reignites it,” says

dctheaterarts.org. It’s pure theatrical magic.”
“The musical’s new touring production has brought back the stunning original design with a better-than-ever cast,” says theatermania.com. “This staging is overall what Broadway offered, but with refreshed, rejuvenated performances that make one feel like they are hearing ‘Music of the Night’ for the very first time.”
The show tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known only as the Phantom who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerized by the talents and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, the Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy,
madness, and passions collide.
Phantom is widely considered one of the most beautiful and spectacular productions in history, playing to more than 160 million people in 47 territories and 195 cities in 21 languages. Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s romantic, haunting, and soaring score includes “The Music of the Night,” “All I Ask of You,” “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again,” “Masquerade,” and the iconic title song.
This is the production that everyone remembers and loves. See it for the first time, or see it again, this is a show you don’t want to miss.
Segerstrom Hall August 12–30

Segerstrom Center is looking back on a highly successful 10th anniversary of the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School. Here, we celebrate this special year with highlights of what the school has been able to accomplish and implement over the past decade. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Susan Brooker, we take a leap towards toward many more years of high-quality dance instruction and unparalleled performance opportunities for Southern California’s aspiring young dancers.
June 2025: Enrollment for year-long training program
Each June, anticipation builds as dancers and their families prepare for auditions for the school’s year-long training program. In 2025, students ages 8 and older once again had the opportunity to demonstrate their potential either in person or through video submissions. These auditions are more than just an entry point. They are a chance for faculty to identify the next generation of talent, marking the beginning of a transformative journey in a student’s dance education.
by Jacqui Pash
September 2025: Commitment to dancer health with physical therapy implementation
Recognizing the physical demands of ballet training, the school took an important step forward by implementing twice-annual physical therapy screenings in partnership with DancePrehab. Through personalized assessments, students receive tailored exercises designed to address their individual strengths and areas for improvement. This proactive approach helps dancers build resilience, improve alignment, and safely sustain their training, reinforcing the school’s commitment to supporting each student’s overall well-being.
October 2025: Students performed in San Francisco Ballet’s Frankenstein
The ABT Gillespie School’s performance opportunities extend to productions in the Center’s dance series when supernumeraries are needed. In October, students performed in San Francisco Ballet’s Frankenstein, a thrilling adaptation of Mary Shelley’s 19th-century novel. Our students played the roles of young Victor Frankenstein and Elizabeth, helping advance the story of Frankenstein’s upbringing while taking part in one of the most innovative pieces of dance today. It was a defining moment that

deepened their understanding of performance and inspired aspirations for their future.
December 2025: Students performed in the 10th anniversary of ABT’s The Nutcracker Alexei Ratmansky’s The Nutcracker would not be the same without the little mouse, Mother Ginger’s Polichinelles, and the other children’s roles that bring joy and heart to Orange County’s favorite holiday tradition. December 2025 marked a double celebration as 49 students shared the stage with American Ballet Theatre’s renowned dancers for the production’s 10th year at the Center.
December 2025: Two sold-out Nutcracker for Kids performances with Pacific Symphony
Designed specifically for younger audiences and first-time balletgoers, this narrated adaptation of The Nutcracker in collaboration with Pacific Symphony offered an engaging and accessible introduction to the art form. These shows featured ABT Gillespie students who have grown out of participating in American Ballet Theatre’s mainstage production, providing them with a meaningful performance opportunity during the holiday season. The sold-out success of both performances underscored the school’s
commitment to community outreach and arts education during this milestone anniversary year.
February 2026: Sunday master class series returns
The school’s beloved Sunday master class series returned this year, taught by an array of the ABT Gillespie School’s foundational figures. These master instructors such as Alaine Haubert, Kevin McKenzie, and Franco De Vita played key roles in shaping the school’s original vision. They came back to not only teach the students but to witness how far the school has come in the past 10 years.
March 2026: Peter and the Wolf announcement
In March we announced a new endeavor for the ABT Gillespie School. In May of 2027, our pre-professional students will put on the school’s first ever full-length production. The chosen work, Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev, will be reimagined as a narrative ballet tailored for family audiences. From rehearsals to performance, students will gain insight into storytelling, character development, and ensemble work on a much larger scale than typical student showcases.

On April 12, the Samueli Theater stage bustled with our Performance Ensemble groups and Pre-professional level students for their annual “Future of Dance” showcase. Featuring original choreography as well as technically demanding works developed over months of rigorous training, the show allows students to explore their artistic voices while gaining confidence in a professional theater setting. The result was an inspiring display of emerging talent, where audience members witnessed not only polished performances but also the individuality of these young dancers.
Many ABT Gillespie students have gone on to dance professionally both nationally and internationally. Recently promoted to Apprentice at Nevada Ballet Theater, Gillespie alumni Mallory Sweeney joined the first cohort of students at the ABT Gillespie School back in 2015 and trained through her junior year of high school. She returned home to perform in the school’s end-of-year showcase on May 30, inspiring current students to envision their own futures and possibilities after graduation. The final showcase not only honored the accomplishments of the current student body but also reinforced the school’s growing legacy of producing dancers who go on to professional careers.
2026:

The summer of 2026 promises to be another dynamic season as the school hosts the ABT Young Dancer Summer Workshop. Drawing approximately 100 students from across the United States, the program offers an immersive training experience led by Gillespie faculty. In addition, themed summer camps such as The Firebird and The Nutcracker provide younger dancers with engaging, story-driven introduction to ballet. These programs not only strengthen technical skills but also foster creativity, friendship, and, above all, a love of dance.
With a decade of success behind it and a future filled with new possibilities, the American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School continues to set the standard for excellence in dance education, offering young artists the tools, experiences, and support they need to succeed on any stage.

The 2026–27 Classical Series at Pacific Symphony will be one for the ages. Announced on February 4 at a special event for subscribers and donors, Alexander Shelley revealed the highly anticipated plans for his inaugural season as Pacific Symphony’s new artistic and music director.
In addition to marking both the 20th anniversary of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and the 40th anniversary of Segerstrom Center for the Arts, Pacific Symphony’s 2026–27 Classical season commemorates America at 250 and the artists who have shaped America’s legacy; surveys some of classical music’s most beloved works; and features high-impact music, global superstars, and numerous “firsts.”
The Opening Night Celebration (September 24) features superstar violinist Joshua Bell as soloist with Shelley and the orchestra in a program inspired by America, with works by composers living today and others who chose to make their homes in the U.S.
Subscription concerts begin with Shelley
leading Mahler’s monumental Second Symphony with Pacific Chorale, soprano Miah Persson, and mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly, signaling new beginnings and a new era for Pacific Symphony. (October 1–3)
“It is a profound honor to begin this chapter with Pacific Symphony, an orchestra of exceptional artistry and boundless spirit,” says Shelley. “I am deeply inspired by the milestones that frame our first full season: America’s 250th anniversary and the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death. We’ll examine the humanist ideals that galvanized Beethoven, shaped the Declaration of Independence, and defined America as we know it. We’ll celebrate the artists who continue to propel America’s classical evolution.”
At the heart of the season is an exploration of America 250—including music by Bernstein, Stravinsky, Copland, and others—both from the émigré perspective and that of U.S.-born composers, as well as a look at global influences on America’s musical tapestry.
The annual semi-staged opera is a key part of America 250, with Shelley leading John Adams’ iconic opera Nixon in China. With stage direction by Elkhanah Pulitzer, three performances feature full costumes, props, dynamic digital imagery, and innovative set design that brings audiences inside history with a work that examines power, ambition, ceremony, and the intimate human moments behind historic headlines through Adams’ richly layered score. (April 8, 10 & 13, 2027)
The two-week Beethoven Revolution Festival (January 28–30, February 4–7 & 9, 2027) offers audiences the unique opportunity to experience all nine of this iconic composer’s symphonies chronologically. This bucket-list item is not to be missed, as the opportunity to play these is a landmark moment for the orchestra and Shelley, too.
“I find the Beethoven cycle of symphonies to be all the more important in this celebratory year

for America. As a child of the Enlightenment, Beethoven advanced humanist and democratic ideals, with a hopeful, forward-looking vision. His music is the music of the time of the Declaration of Independence,” says Shelley. “For the orchestra, it’s a challenge of epic proportions that will deepen our connection together and push us to our full artistic and technical capacity. For listeners, it offers a profound, life-changing encounter with the composer’s heart and mind through his music.”
Shelley has curated a roster of exceptional guest conductors and soloists for 2026-27, with a number making their Pacific Symphony debuts. Pianists Nobuyuki Tsujii (November 19–21), Aristo Sham (April 29–May 1, 2027), and Serena Wang (February 25–27, 2027), and violinist Inmo Yang (March 18–20, 2027) will appear with the orchestra as soloists, as will saxophonist Jess Gillam, who performs music by John Williams (May 20–22, 2207), and soprano Miah Persson and mezzo-soprano Dame Sarah Connolly in Mahler’s Second Symphony. Guest conductors Ruth Reinhardt (December 3–5), Joana Carniero (April 29–May 2, 2027), and Long Yu (February 25–27, 2027) make their Pacific Symphony debuts as well.
Returning favorites include pianist Emanuel Ax (January 16, 2027) in a one-night-only special concert, as well as violinist James Ehnes (October 22–24), soprano Karen Slack
(June 10–12, 2027), and pianist Joyce Yang (March 18–20, 2027).
The wide-ranging repertoire featured in 2026–27 includes symphonic masterworks by Dvořák, Dukas, Grieg, Mozart, Price, Ravel, and more—including 15 pieces never before played by Pacific Symphony—as well as modern masterpieces by composers living today, including Jennifer Higdon, James Newton Howard, Jessie Montgomery, Kevin Puts, and many others.
Shelley closes the classical season with the West Coast premiere of the orchestral version of African Queens. This powerful new work shares the stories of seven great queens and warrior women from the African continent through arias composed by seven Black contemporary composers: Jasmine Barnes, Damien Geter, Jessie Montgomery, Shawn Okpebholo, Dave Ragland, Carlos Simon, and Joel Thompson. (June 10-12, 2027)
Annual events include celebrations of Lunar New Year (February 13, 2027) and Nowruz (March 27, 2027), and performances of Messiah (December 6) and a holiday organ special (December 22) round out the classical programming for 2026–27. For more information or to subscribe, visit pacificsymphony.org.
Don’t miss Alexander Shelley’s return this season to conduct America 250, May 28–30, featuring pianist Conrad Tao as soloist.
