There have been hundreds of thousands— maybe even millions—of small yellow ballgowns purchased over the past few decades for enamored little girls who want to look like the character Belle in Beauty and the Beast. That’s the power of a good story, and Disney does it best.
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast returns to the stage in the show’s first North American touring production in more than 25 years, with members of the original creative team reuniting to bring this enchanting and timeless tale to life like never before. The musical’s score by Alan Menkin and lyrics by the late Howard Ashman expand on the original songbook, adding six new songs with lyrics by Tim Rice (of Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita fame). The production is directed and choreographed by Matt West, who was the original Broadway choreographer.
“Lovely music, dazzling costumes and standout choreography … made me fall in love with new moments in the show,” says the
Tribune. Praising Kyra Belle Johnson, who plays Belle on the tour, “Her voice has that clear, bell-like timbre that’s so quintessentially Disney princess. And it’s certainly worth the wait when Fergie L. Philippe [who plays the Beast] reveals his rich baritone.”
Talking about the characters of Gaston and his sidekick Lefou, “Their comic duality plays off one another so well, it’s no wonder the song ‘Gaston’ was the biggest showstopper of the night, earning the cast one of the mid-show standing ovations,” says newcitystage.com.
Throughout its legacy, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast has become a formative musical for fans of all ages, and many in the cast of the new tour have a personal connection to the original production. Some of those cast members spoke to Broadwayworld.com about the thrill of being in the show.
“I wore out the cassette tape on my Walkman,” says Danny Gardner, who plays Lumiere. “The song specifically, ‘Be Our Guest,’ because as a little ‘song and dance man’

boy, I was just obsessed with it, so to be that character now, it’s kind of a dream come true. That little 10-year-old Danny never knew he’d be playing Lumiere.”
“It was the third musical I was ever in and I loved it,” says Kyra Belle Johnson. “I was a sugar cube in the castle. I really wanted to be Chip, but it’s okay. I let that go, and maybe I’ll get one performance as Chip this go around,” she laughs. “This musical is so iconic. It’s timeless. The romance, the friendship, the magic. There’s humor and love. I can’t wait to do it every night.”
“This tour honors the show’s legacy with care and preserves the classical visual signatures while polishing them with fresh finesse,” says Broadwayworld.com. “The evening glows with the warmth of a timeless story well told. Let the show dazzle you.”

Here are some fun facts about the musical:
• Beauty and the Beast is based on an 18th-century fairy tale.
• Walt Disney had his first significant success in 1937 with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. One of the stories he considered doing next was Beauty and the Beast, but his writing team could not come up with a satisfactory script. In the 1950s he put the story aside altogether after a French liveaction movie version was released in 1947.
• Who doesn’t love a singing teapot? The idea of furniture that talks back came from that 1947 French film, La Belle et le Bête, directed by iconic French surrealist Jean Cocteau. Candelabras in the hallway were held by moving arms. The grand fireplace mantel featured talking faces. (How surreal is that?) The 1991 Disney film featured several visual tributes to Cocteau’s version.
• Beauty and the Beast holds a special place in Disney musicals history, as it was the first Disney Broadway production. It’s the ninth longest-running show on Broadway with a total of more than 5,400 shows performed. That’s more than 13 years!
• The original Belle was Orange County’s own Susan Egan, who is from Seal Beach.
• Toni Braxton was the first African American woman to play the role of Belle.
• Some notable celebrities who have also appeared in Beauty and the Beast include Hugh Jackman and Donny Osmond, who each played the role of Gaston, and heartthrob Nick Jonas, who played Chip.
• There is a hidden “Mickey” in the tavern set drop… see if you can spot it!
• The production uses 81 wigs and 580 costume pieces, including some pieces from the original Broadway run.
• It takes three people to help the Beast into makeup, prosthetics, hair, and wardrobe that transform him into character.
• The “star drop”—a curtain with lights to create starry sky—weighs 450 pounds
• The physical production (sets, costumes, and props) travels from city to city in five 18-wheel, 53-foot tractor trailer trucks.

Let’s say you won a GRAMMY® Award. It’s a huge honor in the music world, right up there with an Oscar. How do you display such a special trophy when you bring it home?
“I put my first GRAMMY in my refrigerator,” laughs jazz pianist Arturo O’Farrill. “That way I could look at it every time I opened the door.” The renowned artist now has six GRAMMYs and two Latin GRAMMYs and keeps them on a shelf at home.
O’Farrill arrives in Orange County next month as the Center’s inaugural artist in residence. He will play a pivotal role in everything we do this year, from concerts to education, connecting with communities and a special focus on art and health.
O’Farrill’s residency is part of the Center’s celebration of its 40th anniversary season and its expanded commitment to Hispanic and Latino arts and culture. This will be seen across our stages and our activities both here and out in the community.
As the focal point of the Center’s Jazz Series, O’Farrill will also compose a new work for Pacific Symphony, lead master classes, create student programs for young people, jam with local musicians, craft community-centered events, and of course, perform on our stages.
“The Center has put tremendous trust in my ability to reflect not just my artistic values but the values that make the Center a great institution,” says O’Farrill. “It’s a very diverse community, and I see a lot of joy and pride out there. I’m honored to be the Center’s first artist in residence.”
O’Farrill has been named “one of our greatest living pianists” by DownBeat magazine. He is the founder and artistic director of the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, now known as Belongó, a non-profit dedicated to performing, educating, and preserving the music of all the Americas, emanating from African and indigenous roots through the entry point of jazz.
continued on page 12

Many people are a bit fuzzy about what an artist in resident is and does. Do they paint murals on the walls of the Center? Do they live on campus full time? Do they bring in donuts for staff?
It’s not quite as complicated as that. Residencies offer creative freedom, allowing artists to break from their daily routines to focus solely on their practice. It provides space to develop new ideas and explore their practice in another environment removed from the distractions of everyday life.
More than just a series of performances, Arturo O’Farrill’s residency is a dynamic exploration of music, culture, and community. He will spend periods of time in Orange County, bringing his distinctive artistic vision to the stage while also leading master classes, educational initiatives and community-based collaborations across Orange County. He also will collaborate with Pacific Symphony to compose a work that highlights Latino lowrider car life.
There’s no one-size-fits-all for this. O’Farrill will have a schedule of events here alongside his regular work as a performer and composer in New York City. In addition to his time at the Center, he wants to visit other parts of Orange County to meet with locals and create music with them.
In this case, it looks like our artist in residence will inspire the Center as much as we inspire him.
continued from page 10
He bridges the gap between traditional Latin rhythms, modern jazz, and contemporary composition, and connects musical traditions from Africa to the Caribbean, Latin America, Brazil, and African American styles.
“I call it a Mambo lasagna, layering all these sounds like you layer a lasagna. You can start with some Cubop [Cuban bebop], spread on a dollop of Afro-Latin, layer on some American jazz and top with Brazilian samba,” he says.
O’Farrill laughs easily but is serious about what he can bring to Orange County as well as what Orange County can show him. He is no stranger to the role of an artist in residence, although those are usually in the context of music schools or conservatories. At the Center, it’s a different animal. He won’t just be giving concerts and master classes; O’Farrill wants to learn about Orange County and our vibrant and varied communities. In addition to performing in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, Samueli Theater, and on Julianne and George Argyros Plaza, the residency includes opportunities for a sustained presence and building a long-term relationship with audiences.
“It’s very humbling that the Center is investing in one person—me—to come in and

make an impact,” he says. “The arts are a way for everyone to come together and share, in a concert hall or a park or local plaza. That’s what builds a community.” He says the Southern California Mexican musical mélange is different than what he knows in New York City and he is excited to connect local musicians and learn from them.
“I want to make sure there are as many opportunities as possible for people to see themselves reflected on stage, so I need to get to know this community,” O’Farrill says. “I prefer to look at the space I’m in and what that audience needs, rather than giving them what I think they need. It’s about what I can do for them.”
At the Center, O’Farrill hopes to be stretched by the vastness of our programming. He loves working with children and introducing them to new concepts. He already has plans to perform a program called When Cultures Collide for an audience of middle schoolers. He’s also working with Pacific Symphony on a special commission that will be performed in the summer of 2027, called Lowrider Symphony, an obvious nod to Latino car culture, an aspect of Southern California life that is still popular today.
For O’Farrill, everything comes back to music.
“Music can convey the deepest human emotions,” he says. “It can teach, reach, motivate, and change the course of human history and understanding. Music can teach love of self and love of others. It is important that one never forgets that it starts with yourself.” * * *
Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra bring the full force of Afro-Cuban rhythm, modern jazz harmony, and big-band brilliance to the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall September 19. Celebrated internationally, the orchestra represents jazz as a living, evolving art form—rooted in history, yet urgently contemporary. Don’t miss this opening concert of the 2026-27 Jazz Series.

Krysta Rodriguez is opening the Center’s 2026-27 Cabaret Series, and for her, it’s a bit like coming home. She was born in Orange and attended Orange County School of the Arts. After a childhood trip to New York City, during which she saw eight Broadway shows, she decided that was her future and started lessons in acting and voice. Even going off to college didn’t slow her down. While attending New York University, she began getting parts, and college went on the back burner. It’s still there.
“Although I would have loved to finish [university], I did not get that opportunity because I started working,” she says. “So … no degree in musical theater, but so far an okay career.” Okay indeed.
Rodriguez has proven she has talent, no matter where she lands. “I’ve been very lucky to do a lot of crossover between theater and television.” She’s worked opposite leading stars, including Ewan McGregor, John Lithgow, Paul Bettany, and Matthew Broderick. She is probably best known for her scene-stealing role in NBC’s Smash, but she is so much more than that.
She has performed in numerous plays and musicals. Perhaps, most memorably, she stepped into an already up-and-running show: Sondheim and Lapine’s Into the Woods. She put on Cinderella’s shoes and never looked back.
Rodriguez had to learn her part quickly and jump right in, with not much rehearsal and no preview days to work out the kinks. She told Theatermania.com that she was able to develop the role with no pre-conceived ideas. “[Cinderella] is the arc of the show. She’s the first to speak and the last to speak, and of all the
characters, she changes the most.” She was not a huge Sondheim fan before this role. Now, she says, “I think I enjoy performing Sondheim. It’s fun to perform…. you’re so supported.”
She chose the iconic 54 Below venue to make her 2019 cabaret debut as a solo performer. Most artists would be nervous about this prospect, and she did admit to the audience she was concerned that it would be like throwing a party where no one shows up. But according to a reviewer from Broadwayworld.com, “For someone who has never done this, it really seems like she invented the genre.”
Another reviewer of the same show observed she matched her rich voice with equally rich acting. “One song, ‘Beyvita,’ was a brilliantly satirical take on numbers from Evita,” says Cabaretscenes.org. “This very funny bit resulted from a ridiculous critique she received at an audition for that show: She sang the familiar selections from that Andrew Lloyd Webber/ Tim Rice super-hit in the style of several pop singers including Beyoncé Knowles. Rodriguez was hilarious.”
“Rodriguez is able to both encompass and elevate what it means to be performing on a cabaret stage,” says Broadwayworld.com. “She’s the reason shows like this exist and shows like this exist so that people like her can shine. And she was the absolute shiniest.”

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (Composer/Book/ Co-Orchestrator) has composed the scores of some of the world’s most famous musicals. His shows have run continuously in London’s West End for 50 years and ran for 43 uninterrupted years on Broadway. When the original Sunset Boulevard joined School of Rock, CATS, and Phantom of the Opera he equaled Rodgers & Hammerstein’s record of four shows running simultaneously on Broadway. He is one of the select group of artists with EGOT status, having received Emmy®, GRAMMY®, Oscar, and Tony® Awards. Lloyd Webber owns six London theatres including the iconic London Palladium and Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Reopened in July 2021, the latter was completely restored and renovated at a cost of over £60 million. This was one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by a private theatre owner in recent times. His mantra is that every penny of profit made from his theatres is ploughed back into the buildings for their conservation and development. Lloyd Webber is passionate about the importance of musical education and diversity in the arts. Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation provides 30 performing arts scholarships every year for talented students with financial need and supports a range of projects such as the Music In Secondary School Trust (MiSST). In academic year September 2025–2026, 14,885 children are being given free musical tuition
and instruments as part of MiSST’s Andrew Lloyd Webber Program. The Foundation also commissions research into diversity in theatre. Andrew Lloyd Webber has composed music for globally significant moments. Most recently, he was asked to compose “Make a Joyful Noise”, the anthem for the Coronation of King Charles III. Andrew Lloyd Webber was knighted in 1992, created an honorary life peer in 1997, and made a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter by King Charles III in 2024. Beethoven.
It’s a name that towers over the classical music genre. According to Guide to Chamber Music by Melvin Berger, “Beethoven is widely accepted as the most influential and revolutionary composer of all time, an emancipator who freed composition from the constraints and restrictions of Classicism.”
During his lifetime, revolution was in the air, metaphorically and literally: The French Revolution changed everything. Composers began to move from writing for the church and rich aristocracy to creating works that an orchestra could play in a concert hall for anyone who could afford a ticket. This shift allowed a composer to listen to his inner creative muse and compose what inspired him, not what a rich patron requested.
This chamber season honors the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death and the great output of music he left us. We open with the Attacca Quartet, which has seamlessly bridged the gap between the classical canon and the boundary-pushing contemporary collaborations, sort of like Beethoven in his day. They have proved themselves fearless, fresh and bold.
“We are living in a golden age of string quartet … It’s hard to disagree when you hear the vibrant young players in New York’s Attacca Quartet,” says NPR.
The word “attacca” is a musical direction for players to move from one movement to the next without pause. That could describe the ensemble itself. Founded at Juilliard in 2003 by Amy Schroeder and Andrew Yee, the ensemble has already won two GRAMMY® Awards and top prizes at international chamber music competitions. Still, the members find it amusing that after more than 20 years as a group, they are still referred to as an “emerging” quartet. “We’ve been emerging longer than anyone,” laughs Schroeder.
Perhaps the confusion is due to the group’s eclectic, try-anything attitude. This is a quartet that can be heard on the action video game Red Dead Redemption 2. They seem to glide from the 18th century through to the 21st-century repertoire without breaking a string. They are a perfect quartet for our modern times, “a surprisingly powerful experience,” says The Strad magazine.
NPR calls out their “eclectic musical palette.” Twelve years ago they made a recording of the cycle of Haydn’s string quartets, followed by a recording of John Adams’ complete quartets. The ensemble “lives in the present aesthetically, without rejecting the virtues of the musical past,” says The Nation, while The New York Times called them exuberant, funky, and… exactingly nuanced.”
For their Center debut, Attacca will present works by Caroline Shaw, rock band Radiohead, Maurice Ravel, and Beethoven. Shaw has worked with the quartet and collaborated on their GRAMMY-winning album, Orange. Shaw told NPR she loves working with Attacca because “they approach everything with creativity and

enthusiasm and a willingness to try something new. Everything feels very fresh, whether it’s something I’ve written or it’s Beethoven.”
There is much to consider about Beethoven’s music. He wasn’t even 30 years old when he knew he was losing his hearing. Beethoven proved to himself and the world that he could still produce masterpieces of a whole new sound, in spite of his eventual total loss of hearing.
But can a composer with such a huge output pick a favorite piece? Beethoven told a friend that Opus 131—composed in 1825 and being performed at this concert—was his favorite. When fellow composer Franz Schubert heard
this work, it was reported that “He fell into such a state of excitement and enthusiasm that we were all frightened for him.” Berger says that today, many musicians as well as listeners consider it the greatest quartet ever written.
Over the years Attacca Quartet has retained the chemistry and mutual respect for each other. “You can’t fake love and respect, and that has been really important to us,” says Schroeder. “I think it’s something that hopefully will ensure our longevity as an ensemble.”
Samueli Theater September 27

It’s the end of October and the Flores household is preparing for Día de los Muertos. But 12-year-old Vita doesn’t feel like joining in; she doesn’t understand why it’s so important. She would rather be with her school friends making Halloween costumes. But while she is helping arrange items on her abuelita’s ofrenda (grandmother’s altar) a lively skeleton decoration made of hardened sugar suddenly comes to life and everything changes.
Experience the magic, music, and heart of SUGAR SKULL! A Día de Muertos Adventure for young audiences.
Día de los Muertos is celebrated on November 1 and is a way to remember loved ones who have passed away. It is believed that for one night the spirits can return to earth and see their loved ones again. Families visit their graves and decorate them with flowers, candles, sugar skulls, and the loved one’s favorite foods. The event is a combination of reverence for those who are no longer with us along with singing and dancing to celebrate them.
As Vita is making a marigold garland for the ofrenda, the lively candy skeleton whisks her into a vibrant world where ancestors dance, legends come to life, and tradition takes center stage. She meets characters from Mexican folklore including Calavera Catrina, a character from an iconic 1913 etching by Mexican artist
José Guadalupe Posada depicting a skeleton in an elegant, oversized hat and fancy dress. At the time, it satirized the upper-class obsession with European customs. Today, she is the primary symbol of Día de los Muertos, representing death as a great equalizer and stripping away social status.
This production comes to the Center from Rhythm of the Arts, a company dedicated to creating culturally rich and engaging live performances. The company specializes in music, dance, and family-focused programming that fosters cross-cultural collaboration and brings authentic storytelling to audiences of all ages.
The show has live music and a cast of Latino actors. “It allows children to see themselves on stage and share the beauty and richness of our culture with their friends,” says Leah Keith, producer of the show. “Vita’s search for identity is a universal story. It shows them where they really come from.”
Featuring stunning regional Mexican music, dance, and eye-popping visuals, this uplifting journey helps audiences discover the meaning behind this beloved holiday.
Samueli Theater September 19–20

Time flies when you’re having fun, and we’ve had a lot of fun at the Center. Can you believe it’s been 40 years since the Orange County Performing Arts Center had its grand opening in September 1986?
We’ve been going strong ever since.
We changed our name in 2011 to Segerstrom Center for the Arts. We built two more theaters: Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall and Samueli Theater, which were opened 20 years ago. In 2017 we opened the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza.
We have brought people together through extraordinary performances, educational opportunities, and shared experiences. Now we’re celebrating how far the Center has come with a free public party on Sunday, September 13. From 2–6 pm, we’re opening our doors so you can see how the magic happens.
There will be activities for all ages inside all our venues and out on the plaza. Guests will be able to move freely throughout the campus as every venue comes alive with performances and interactive activities. Docents will be on hand for mini tours of campus artwork and backstage areas.
With a focus on the next 40 years, this family-friendly event will feature the Mater Dei High School band kicking it all off, performances by Orange County School of the Arts ensembles, artmaking and creative activities at the UC Irvine Langson Orange County Museum of Art, and fun activities throughout the campus.
In the concert hall, Pacific Symphony and Philharmonic Society of Orange County youth
ensembles will perform, and attendees will have the chance to try out different instruments at the Philharmonic Society’s instrument petting zoo. World-renowned organist David Ball will also be on hand to bring our singular William J. Gillespie pipe organ to life, along with the Christ Cathedral Organ Scholars.
Over at the Judy Morr Theater, the talented students of the Center’s American Ballet Theatre William J. Gillespie School will share drop-in classes, performances and demonstrations, while Samueli Theater will feature Studio D:Arts for All Abilities with showcases and drop-in classes. The Samueli Theater lobby will also be set up as a sensory-friendly retreat.
Outside on the plaza there will be performances throughout the afternoon by Mariachi Orgullo de UCI, alternating with dance lessons and Pacific Chorale’s Big Sing, inviting everyone to raise their voices together.
The fun doesn’t stop there!
In the evening from 6–8 pm, we’re having a 1980s-themed birthday bash. Hosted by ABC Eyewitness News anchor David Ono, the evening will feature special anniversary moments celebrating the Center’s legacy, a high-energy performance by Flashback Heart Attack, and conclude with a spectacular drone show lighting up the Orange County sky.
Campus-wide event September 13

With so much to appreciate about the performing arts, it might be hard to pick your favorite aspect. Whatever that is for you, the Center wants to ensure that our future continues to be filled with exciting performances and arts education opportunities of all kinds. And to do that, we look to our patrons for support.
There are many different ways you can contribute to the Center’s future, and one is through a planned gift. These after-lifetime commitments provide us with a solid foundation for our bright future.
That’s what longtime patron Suzanne Jones decided to do when she was considering her estate. During the process her brother asked her, “What brings you joy?”
Suzanne doesn’t have children or grandchildren but does have a grandniece (Madison) and grandnephew (Kaden) that she brings to the Center for shows. She wants to know they can continue to enjoy everything the Center has to offer for years to come, so she arranged for a planned gift through her estate.
“I think the Center is so well-rounded in that it presents Broadway productions, symphony, ballet, singers, and more,” says Suzanne. “I just always, always have a good time at the theater!”
In that spirit, she fondly remembers bringing Madison and Kaden to see How the Grinch Stole Christmas. She loved their enthusiasm and excitement as they experienced the joy of seeing a live show on stage.
It was taking a docent tour of the Center that opened her eyes to everything it offers and why support from patrons is so important. She learned that ticket prices often don’t entirely cover the cost of a production.
Creating a planned gift for the Center enables the arts to thrive in Orange County. Through your generosity the Center can continue to inspire, educate, entertain, and enrich the lives of our community members.

With planned gifts the Center can carry on our mission of quality artistic and education programming and cement its position as a world-renowned performing arts organization and a cultural anchor in our community. Those like Suzanne who create such gifts are invited to join the Legacy Society, which celebrates and honors these visionary philanthropists. There are many ways to create your own planned gift, such as naming the Center as a partial or full beneficiary through your will, living trust, beneficiary designation, charitable gift annuity, charitable trust, or life insurance policy.
Please join us on this important arts journey as we provide for artistic and educational programming today while securing our future tomorrow.
“It’s so important to have the Center in our community,” says Suzanne. “Future generations who attend performances at the Center that bring them joy will thank us.”

When PNC Bank expanded to Orange County nearly five years ago, it wasted no time becoming involved in the local arts community. Within a year, the banking institution—founded 160 years ago—was supporting jazz and Broadway productions at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. This season, PNC is sponsoring two beloved classics—The Sound of Music and Phantom of the Opera.
“We were intentional about supporting organizations that reflect who PNC Bank is as a company and how we show up in our communities,” says Jarrod Ingle, PNC Bank regional president for Orange County and Inland Empire. “Segerstrom Center stands out as a premier arts institution that embodies our values and fosters a shared sense of belonging well beyond the stage.”
PNC Bank brings a national commitment to arts and culture, recognizing the important role they play in strengthening the social fabric of the communities we serve. The wide range of world-class productions presented by the Center contributes to shared cultural exchanges that help build community identity and pride far beyond Orange County. Audiences can experience the joy of art and music through Summer Sounds music on the plaza, share Family Series performances from theater companies from around the world, or join Tuesday Night Dance, which introduces a different dance style each month.
“The arts are a powerful force for connection and community. Our collaboration with the Center allows PNC to help shape the vibrant cultural and business energy that defines Orange County,” says Denise Scott, vice president, client and community relations director for Orange County and Inland Empire.
An Orange County native, Scott is also a strong advocate for the local arts scene and enjoys introducing PNC clients to the Center’s music series—whether it’s something they’ve always loved, or something entirely new.

This past season, PNC hosted guests for a performance of &Juliet
“In celebration of &Juliet, we hosted a client experience that echoed one of the show’s central themes: the power of guidance, encouragement and shared wisdom,” adds Scott. “Guests were invited to attend the performance alongside a mentor who has helped shape their personal or professional journey,” said Ingle. “The evening became more than a night at the theater—it was an opportunity to recognize the people who help others find their voice, take risks and chart new paths, much like the characters on stage who challenge expectations and reimagine what comes next.”
Through its ongoing support of the arts, PNC Bank leads by example, demonstrating a deep commitment to the communities it serves and sending a clear signal that the arts are a powerful force for connection. The Center is delighted to count PNC as a supporter as it continues to play an essential role in enriching cultural experiences across Orange County.
Segerstrom Center for the Arts is pleased to thank the following corporations and foundations for providing annual contributions to the Center in support of our artistic and community education programs and our special event and performance sponsorships throughout the year.*
