Welcome Dear Friends, October at Segerstrom Center for the Arts offers extraordinary opportunities to experience the power, beauty, and possibility of the arts. We are proud to present our inaugural All Abilities Conference, a first for the Center and an important step in advancing inclusion and accessibility throughout the arts. The conference will bring together artists, educators, arts leaders, advocates, and community members for meaningful dialogue, professional development, and live performances. We also invite you to join us for the All Abilities Celebration on October 24 (see page 14). We welcome Houston Ballet for its West Coast debut of Sons de L’âme (Sounds of the Soul), featuring the music of Frédéric Chopin and acclaimed pianist George Li. Broadway’s The Outsiders, adapted from S.E. Hinton’s seminal novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic film, brings a moving story of rivalry, friendship, and self-discovery to the stage. Music lovers can enjoy Isaiah Collier Plays Coltrane, an electrifying tribute to the legendary saxophonist; an adventurous musical experience with Brooklyn Rider String Quartet; and Jason Moran’s Duke Ellington: My Heart Sings, performed with Pacific Symphony. Our family series welcomes Yellow Bird Chase, offering engaging experiences for audiences of all ages. For our free community events, join us on October 16 for The Rocky Horror Picture Show: HalloQueen Spooktacular. Also this month, our resident company Pacific Symphony presents three concerts conducted by the masterful Alexander Shelley. Thank you for being a part of our community.

Have you ever thought about running away to the circus? It might sound enticing: jump on a train that’s pulling out of the town where there’s nothing left for you, and see what happens. It’s a circus; it must be exciting, right? The musical Water for Elephants is an aweinspiring theatrical production. When young veterinary student Jacob jumps on that train during the Great Depression, he puts himself in the middle of drama both in the ring and in the heart of the lead aerialist, Marlena, who happens to be married to the jealous owner of this rundown show. It’s certainly not Ringling Brothers. The New York Times gave it an enthusiastic review, calling it a “stunning, emotional production” and says “it leads with movement, eye candy and awe.” The story is based on Sarah Gruen’s 2006 novel of the same name, and critics and audiences overwhelmingly agree that the jawdropping circus acrobatics, stunning puppetry, and immersive staging make it an unforgettable night at the theater. “The reasons to flock to see Water for Elephants are not your typical musical theater must-haves,” says onstagepittsburgh.com. “The

touring company, each person with their own set of skills, put me on the edge of my seat on opening night, as performers were tossed and caught, or were hanging and tumbling by a figurative thread, with only each other as a net.” One of the show’s choreographers, circus designer Shana Carroll, comes to the show with Cirque du Soleil experience as well as 20 years as a circus performer. She has frequently been asked to help a director include circus acts in a production, but always said no. She didn’t want to place an act in a show just for the sake of having something. Carroll wanted the circus to be an integral part of a show, and with Water for Elephants she found it. Her co-choreographer, Jesse Robb, also worked at Cirque de Soleil, and they share an acrobatic language. Within the cast are seven members who actually have circus skills and make everything look so easy. Many of them have multiple skills that extend what they can do, things that are not expected by the audience. What they perform must be the biggest trust falls of all. “Breathing extraordinary life into the show is the highly talented ensemble of acrobats, contortionists, and aerialists,” says

mdtheatreguide.com. “The exceptional physicality of the entire company is worth the price of admission alone and their jawdropping circus acts are out of this world.” In addition to these experts are the lead actors who learned from Carroll how to swing from a trapeze and make her role more realistic. “I have so much fun up there,” says one of the actors who has just learned how to swing from a trapeze. “I think the reason I’m not scared is because I was taught by the foremost trapeze artist in the world.” The animal puppets are also spectacular, from the horse Jacob tries to save, to the elephant taken on by the circus to create a new act. Audiences soon forget that they are seeing puppets portray the circus menagerie. Water for Elephants is the perfect show for theater lovers, circus fans, and anyone who loves a story that stays in their hearts long after the curtain falls in Segerstrom Hall. Hup! Time to Swing

I’d fly through the air with the greatest of ease That daring young man on the flying trapeze That “daring young man” was Jules Léotard, a Frenchman who, in 1859, invented the trapeze swing and launched himself above the swimming pool in his father’s gymnasium. He invented new heart-stopping tricks and soon became a sensation, with the popular song written about him. (He also gave his name to the form-fitting garment he would wear to perform.) Unfortunately, he died fairly young of what may have been malaria. But the die was cast, and today there are many talents that fall under the heading of “aerial specialists,” including trapeze bars, working with silks— long ropes of soft fabric—and ropes. How do they manage to catch each other at just the right time to perform jaw-dropping tricks while hanging from the bar or another person? When a team is performing on the trapeze, there is a lead who will say “Hup!” to signal when someone should start their routine. The acrobats follow those “hups” to know, for instance, when to swing off the platform, when to grab a partner’s ankles as they fly toward each other, and when to let go again as the partner re-approaches the swinging bar, catching it. And if they happen to miss, at least today they fly over safety nets, not swimming pools. OCTOBER 2026 9

Joaquina Kalukango hits the right notes Joaquina Kalukango is being hailed as Broadway’s next great leading lady. In 2022 she won a Tony for her leading role in a musical Paradise Square, a role she created with the director, Moisés Kaufman, who hired her without an audition. Kalukango described her Paradise Square character as “a firecracker,” to Town and Country magazine. “She’s able to see into people’s true hearts.” She returns to the Center with more of that firecracker power. “Kalukango [in Paradise Square] reminds us what a superb vocalist and musical actress she is,” says nystagereview.com. “Her rendering of “Let It Burn”… is a master class on how to stop a show cold … and stop the show she did, earning a sustained standing ovation.” Since her previous cabaret appearance at the Center Kalukango has been busy. Last

year she played the role of Aunt Rose in a new off-Broadway play, Saturday Church. She also appeared in a television biopic about Goria Gaynor, showing herself at her best when she belted the iconic song “I Will Survive.” Kalukango also played the Witch in Into the Woods in its latest Broadway revival. It’s theater that really energizes her. Kalukango thrives on the collective energy of standing up in front of a crowd. “Theater is like being in the playoffs every night,” she says. “It’s always changing based on who comes into the space. You never know what’s going to happen.” Paradise Square really set her singing career in motion. She initially was part of an ensemble in the show, but as development of the work continued, Kalukango’s character rose to become the heroine, the one audiences would cheer for. She did not disappoint. The Chicago Tribune predicted her Tony win. “Kalukango will be formidable competition for anyone and everyone come Tony Awards time.” With a cabaret engagement last year at New York’s Café Carlyle under her belt, Kalukango is expanding her fan base. “I would love to do more concerts,” she told Broadway World. There’s more creative freedom in choosing your own repertoire. I find that I can engage and have more fun with audience members outside of a scripted context.” That can mean a concert where her repertoire includes Broadway, some Motown, a song by The Beatles, and a bit of disco. All of it works and shows off her magnificent, powerful soprano. Her Tony Award was no fluke. Kalukango’s natural ability to connect with people and a show that might have some surprises, this will be a phenomenal engagement for the Cabaret season. Samueli Theater November 5–7

John and Sherry Phelan: leading with vision and heart For John and Sherry Phelan, Segerstrom Center for the Arts is more than a destination for exceptional performances. It is a place where people come together, experience something new, and build lasting connections through the arts. Since joining the Center’s board of directors in 2018, John has played an active role in helping guide the organization forward. Before being elected board chair in 2024, he served on several key committees, including Board Development, Finance, and Long-Range Planning. He was also a member of the search committee that selected Casey Reitz as the Center’s president and CEO in 2019. As board chair, John has brought a thoughtful and forward-looking approach to his leadership. He initiated and helped lead the development of a new five-year plan that establishes a shared vision for the Center’s future. Its priorities will guide new initiatives, expanded opportunities, and continued growth in the artistic and educational programming the Center provides to the community. John has also overseen an important period of growth within the organization’s leadership. Since the beginning of his term, the Center has welcomed seven new members to its board of directors and added three vice presidents to its senior staff. These additions bring new perspectives and expertise to the Center while strengthening the leadership needed to carry its vision forward. His tenure has also included a historic fundraising achievement. John served as board chair during the record-breaking 50th

Candlelight Concert featuring Elton John, chaired by Stephanie Argyros and fellow board member John Ginger. The landmark celebration raised an extraordinary $19 million in support of the Center’s wide range of arts education and community engagement programs. Sherry shares John’s enthusiasm for the Center and its place in the community. As a member of Angels of the Arts, she participates in the long-standing support group whose members champion the Center. Together, John and Sherry embrace the full range of experiences the Center offers. During the summer, John and Sherry can often be spotted on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza participating in Tuesday Night Dance, joining community members for free dance classes under the evening sky. Most recently the Phelans attended a Tuesday night salsa class. At the next board meeting he expressed how wonderful it was to see the plaza so full of dancers of every level out there dancing together and encouraged the board to try a class. “If I can learn some salsa, anyone can!” Whether John is leading a board discussion, Sherry is gathering with fellow Angels, or the two are learning new dance steps, their involvement is grounded in a genuine appreciation for the Center. Their example demonstrates that supporting the arts is not only about shaping what comes next. It is also about showing up, joining in, and finding joy in everything the Center makes possible.

Accessibility is everywhere Dancing in wheelchairs? That’s quite common these days. The Center believes everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the joy and inspiration the arts provide, no matter what your circumstances or abilities. It’s part of an inclusive community of people of all abilities to move, connect and belong. The Center is hosting its inaugural All Abilities Conference October 23–24, bringing together artists, arts administrators and educators. The conference builds on the Center’s growing work at the intersection of the arts, accessibility and wellness, including programs such as Studio D: Arts School for All Abilities. Thanks to generous sponsorship from Kaiser Permanente, conference registration is free for all attendees. Conferencegoers will take away practical tools for creating more welcoming spaces, connect with others building accessibility in the field, and hear from disabled artists about what inclusive collaboration looks like in practice. Sessions will focus on real-world applications, from designing an accessible digital marketing strategy and building inclusive programs to selfadvocacy and professional growth opportunities for artists with disabilities. In addition to conference sessions, registration will include a ticket to the national Broadway tour of the hit musical The Outsiders,

as well as a performance excerpt and Q&A with the team behind Yellow Bird Chase, a sensoryfriendly show in our Family Series. Performances by artists with disabilities will also be woven into the conference experience. The following day, the conference will incorporate the free 6th annual All Abilities Celebration on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza. This event gathers our community together to learn and appreciate the special talents each individual brings. This will be an opportunity for conference attendees to experience a hands-on interactive day and see the arts and accessibility in action. It features music, familyfriendly performances, interactive workshops, sensory inclusive activities, and informational booths that will spotlight and honor the local disability community. American Sign Language interpreters will be present to interpret both the performances and workshops. “Our goal for the All Abilities Conference is to create opportunities for artists, educators, administrators, and community members to learn from one another,” says Lisa Petersen, vice president of education and engagement for the Center. “We hope to advance accessibility and inclusion across Orange County and beyond.” Registration is required; scan the code below to register and learn more.

“Teen-Agers Are for Real” In 1967, a few months after The Outsiders was released, The New York Times published an op-ed by a then 19-year-old S.E. (Susie) Hinton titled “Teen-Agers Are for Real”: All we hear is how teen-agers are rebelling against authority, against country, against parents. This is partly true. It is more true that all we are doing most of the time is asking “Why?” and getting as an answer, “Because it’s always been done that way.” If there were more stopping and explaining why it’s always been done this way, there’d be more understanding. Understanding breeds communication. There we are back at the root of the matter. Teen-agers should not be written down to; anyone can tell when [their] intelligence is being underestimated... Teen-agers know a lot today. Not just things out of a textbook, but about living. They know their parents aren’t superhuman, they know that justice doesn’t always win out, and that sometimes the bad guys win out. They know that persons in high places aren’t safe from corruption, that some men have their price, and that some people sell out. Writers needn’t be afraid that they will shock their teen-age audience. but give them something to hand on to. Show that some people don’t sell out, and that everyone can’t be bought. Do it realistically. Earn respect by giving it. Copyright © 1967 by S. E. Hinton; reprinted by permission of Curtis Brown, Ltd.; all rights reserved.

He finds a new home with the remarkable crew of a traveling circus, and a life—and love—beyond his wildest dreams. Seen through the eyes of his older self, his adventure becomes a poignant reminder that if you choose the ride, life can begin again at any age. Tony®-nominated director Jessica Stone’s “huge, heart-filling” production (The New York Times) features a book by three-time Tony nominee Rick Elice adapted from Sara Gruen’s novel, and a soaring score by the acclaimed PigPen Theatre Co. Great live performances are built to stay with you. A breath, a movement, a phrase suspended in the air—the moment fades, but what it leaves in the heart, the mind, the soul does not. Pacific Chorale presented To the Hands at Samueli Theater in September 2024—for those in attendance, the experience was singular. The GRAMMY® Award-winning resident chorus of Segerstrom Center for the Arts had created something that moved beyond the conventions of a concert: an intimate choral-theatrical production in which music, movement, light, and imagery confronted homelessness, displacement, and the human need to belong.

To the Hands is a sacred lament and a powerful testament on community, vulnerability, and empathy. Cameras were rolling to capture this unique live experience. The production began with a precise artistic choice by Pacific Chorale Artistic Director Robert Istad. He placed Pulitzer- and GRAMMY®-winning Caroline Shaw’s To the Hands beside the 1680 work that inspired it, Dieterich Buxtehude’s Ad manus from Membra Jesu nostri. Buxtehude’s Baroque cantata contemplates the wounded hands of Christ. More than three centuries later, Shaw turns those hands outward. Her work brings refugees, borders, and human displacement into the frame, asking a question as intimate as it is immense: what are the wounds in the midst of our hands? Istad extended that dialogue across a carefully shaped program of works by living composers and songwriters including Moira Smiley, Sarah McLachlan, Kevin Siegfried, Ken Burton, Shawn Kirchner, and Ysaÿe Barnwell. Under the theatrical direction of Marty Austin Lamar, the music unfolded through choreography, projection, and light. Data about homelessness in Orange and LA counties were woven into the presentation, bringing the work’s global concerns into immediate closeness with the audience. The intimacy of Samueli Theater was essential. Sixteen singers, a string quintet from Delirium Musicum, a pianist, and five dancers occupied the space not as separate forces, but as a single expressive body. Voices emerged from movement; visual images entered the music; light and darkness highlighted these forces; even silence became part of the experience.

The result did not lecture or prescribe. It created a space in which ancient sacred music, contemporary choral writing, popular song, and the realities of the present could mirror and enhance one another. Anyone who has been transformed by a live performance knows the difficulty of preserving it. A recording can document what happened, but rarely can it hold the atmosphere in the room—the concentration of the artists, the tension of silence, or the emotional current passing between stage and audience. To the Hands accomplished something rarer. Filmed live between its two performances, the 62-minute work captured the immediacy of the original production without reducing it to a record of an event. The camera became a new angle, preserving the force of the ensemble while drawing the viewer into the intense expression of raw acoustic performance. The recording is, in a sense, lightning held in a bottle: a live performance conceived for one room and one moment, now able to meet viewers through another medium without surrendering its theatrical intention. The independent film has carried To the Hands far beyond its first audiences at Segerstrom Center. In October 2025, the film received its world premiere as an Official Selection of the Newport Beach Film Festival— an especially meaningful homecoming for an Orange County-based project created and filmed by local artists. The premiere opened a wider journey. To the Hands has now received recognition from 15 film festivals in the United States and internationally, affirming that the questions at its center cross geographic and cultural boundaries. The film festival recognition as an arthouse and cinematic choral-theatrical experience is just part of the journey of To the Hands. This fleeting live experience was preserved— and will be shared widely thanks to the support from producing sponsors David and Darrellyn Melilli, co-sponsors Segerstrom Center for the

Arts and National Endowment of the Arts, and additional support from Pacific Chorale’s Artistic Innovation Fund and the Ron Rudderow Legacy Fund. This November, To the Hands makes its broadcast debut with PBS SoCal and begins streaming worldwide. For those who experienced the original production, the film offers a return to Samueli Theater and a closer view of details that could only be glimpsed from one point of view. For those encountering the work for the first time, it offers a striking example of how live acoustic choral art reaches beyond sound—drawing theater, film, and social consciousness into a single, deeply human experience. To the Hands does not offer easy answers. It asks us to remain present with difficult questions: whom we welcome, whose suffering we allow ourselves to see, and what we are willing to hold in our hearts. Every live performance comes to an end. What To the Hands awakened did not end—its spirit stays with us and changes us forever. Scan the QR code for release details.

Brentano String Quartet celebrates Beethoven Beethoven in love? If you know much about his private life (he managed to alienate both friend and family) this might be hard to imagine, but he did write a 10-page love letter that was never properly addressed or sent but simply labelled to his “Immortal Beloved.” Music scholars think this may have been Antonie Brentano, a wealthy art collector and philanthropist with whom he may or may not have had a dalliance, but what we do know is that he dedicated one of his greatest piano works to her. The Brentano Quartet has decided to go with the dalliance option, and took her name. The Brentano is a group that has unusually longtime consistency among it members: They have had the same lineup of musicians since 1998. It clearly makes a difference in their sound and how the four interact as they perform, everything from works by Claudio Monteverdi (born in 1567) to Matthew Aucoin (born in 1990). Our deep dive into Beethoven continues with the Brentano, which has established a

worldwide reputation for its multilayered and original interpretations. Frontrowcenter.com calls the quartet “one of the most intellectually probing and musically refined ensembles performing today.” The Strad says, “The glittering clarity of the Brentano’s sound was intoxicating … a revelatory performance.” The ensemble has put together a program that posits Beethoven in an unlikely light: As dramatic melodist with operatic roots and ambition. The opening work, Beethoven’s String Quartet in F Major, contains a movement that was inspired by one of the greatest tragedies in all of literature. Says Beethoven: “I thought of the scene in the burial vault in Romeo and Juliet.” The second work is Mozart’s String Quartet in D minor, composed while his wife Constanza was giving birth to their first child, which may explain the work’s unusual operatic intensity and dramatic depth. Beethoven’s String Quartets Op. 59 are a set of three of the most famous quartets in the

“STUNNING AND EMOTIONAL” genre. Called the “Razumovsky” after the eccentric Russian diplomat and music lover, they were not positively received by everyone. But the composer used his wit to respond. When a violinist friend said to him, “Surely you do not consider this music,” Beethoven countered, “Not for you, but for a later age.” These works transcended what amateur musicians were used to playing. Aimed at true professional musicians, another of Beethoven’s friends complained about how difficult the piece was. Beethoven was supposedly heard to mutter, “Does he really suppose I think of his little fiddle when the spirit speaks to me and I compose something?” It may be apocryphal but it does sound like something he would say when losing his patience. In honor of the commissioner of these quartets, he closes with Thème Russe, music that was based on Russian folk songs. Razumovsky must have been pleased. The Brentanos are true to their reputation as one of the most intellectually probing and musically refined ensembles performing today. This is a performance you won’t want to miss. Simply Good Food Ina Garten returns to the Center for Simply Ina: An Evening Conversation with Ina Garten. She’s just as delightful in real life as one of her brownie puddings, as down to earth as her famous perfect roast chicken. The evening will spotlight her new cookbook, Simply Ina, a vibrant collection of 85 recipes that prove the most delicious cooking is often the simplest. Ina will share stories from behind the scenes of her cookbooks and television shows and discuss her philosophy of approachable elegance. A No. 1 New York Times-bestselling author and longtime star of Food Network, she is the creator of more than a dozen bestselling cookbooks and the host of Be My Guest with Ina Garten. Her show has earned five Emmy Awards. As her longtime fans know, Garten was working as a nuclear policy analyst for the government when she decided she needed a change. She bought a small specialty food store in the Hamptons that was already named The Barefoot Contessa and filled the cases with her delicious food. It didn’t take long before she needed to move into a larger store, and from there her cooking empire began. “In all of my cookbooks, I’ve only had one rule: It has to be delicious and easy enough that I want to make it again—and right away,” Garten told Bon Appétit magazine. “The easier a recipe is to make, the more likely that is to happen. I also want to show people how they can take ordinary recipes and give them a twist to make something really special.” It doesn’t matter if you are an expert in the kitchen or just learning to follow recipes, Garten has you covered, whether you are looking for new ideas for a holiday picnic, or have never attempted to bake a pie. And her personal stories are just as good as her chocolate cake. (Ina adds hot coffee to her recipe to enhance the chocolate flavor.)

What are some of Ina’s best baking hacks? Food & Wine magazine swears by her suggestion of lining baking sheets with parchment paper. (You can buy packages of pre-cut sheets on Amazon.) You avoid those crusty bits that inevitably happen and can be hard to clean off. Non-stick aluminum foil works, too. Ina suggests rethinking your use of your waffle iron. She loves making hash browns in the versatile kitchen gadget, as they become extremely “crispy on the outside and creamy inside—and the best part is no splatters on the stove!” Ina’s number one suggestion for new cooks is to prep all the ingredients before you start the recipe. You can ensure you have everything you need and won’t need to keep stopping to measure ingredients. Frozen fruits and vegetables are best for recipes if you can’t get fresh. The flavor is far better than canned items. Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall November 11

Angela, a motorcycle rider and rock climber, refused to let breast cancer slow her down. Today, she’s back to living at full speed. At City of Hope, we know every patient is different. That’s why our breast cancer specialists create a plan designed around you, with access to leading-edge treatments, clinical trials and compassionate support — and the goal of getting you back to the life you love.
