An Angel in the Wings

Ava Fries Dedicates her Life to the Arts

A

va Fries arrived in hollywood four decades ago after earning a degree in English literature and theatre arts at the university of Tulsa. While conquering the TV and film industries, she began her tireless work supporting youth and the arts in Los Angeles, most notably for Center Theatre Group.

AN ANGeL At tHe HeLM For two decades Fries has spearheaded Center Theatre Group Affiliates’ Angels’ Night, a biennial gala that under her aegis has raised more than $7 million for arts education.

Fries’ service exemplifies her belief in the power of theatre to change young people’s lives, a power she feels most potently when observing the Q-and-As after a student matinee.

“The students ask such brilliant questions,” she says. “I used to argue against bringing students to shows with mature content, but I quickly realized they relate to the characters and apply what they see onstage to their lives.

The beauty of theatre is that young people, maybe even more than adults, see their lives reflected onstage and can be changed by it.”

A roArING GooD tIMe This year’s Angels’ Night will have a “roaring ’20s” theme and feature entertainment

from a big band, the Crystal Dancers — a professional troupe of dancing flappers — and Distinguished Artist Award-winner Tracie Bennett, star of End of the Rainbow at the Ahmanson Theatre earlier this year.

It will be another milestone in Fries’ quest to introduce Los Angeles children to the theatre and to see its magic at work in their lives and hearts.

A cHAMPIoN oF tHe ArtS Ava Fries began her life in the arts as an actress and spokesperson for brands like General Electric, Ford Motor Company and hanes. She eventually started her own business, Avanti Enterprises, for which she developed, among other projects, the TV series Born Famous and the film Troop Beverly Hills. Seventeen years ago, Fries merged her professional and philanthropic interests when she joined CTG’s Board of Directors. Now the Board’s vice president, she has chaired the Education Committee and served on the Development, Governance and Finance committees. She has also served as president and is currently first vice president for Center Theatre Group Affiliates, an organization that exposes young people to the magic of live theatre. Center Theatre Group is profoundly grateful to Ava Fries for her enduring support and leadership.

All the Fine Messes

Funny people

— in the form of clowns, comics, and gag men — have long performed alone and in troupes. But the conceit of the comedy duo, or double act, emerged during the late 19th century in rowdy music halls and vaudeville stages.

The acts varied. The performers played themselves or played roles in skits that the audiences grew to learn by heart, because the teams returned again and again to the same theatres on the vaudeville circuit. The laughs came from action or dialogue, or some wild brew of both.

(George Burns and Gracie Allen). Effusive and quiet (Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz; Penn Jillette and Teller). If one had an economy of facial and corporeal movement, and the other seemed manic in comparison (Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis).

But the key characterization of the comedy duo was, and is today, an uneven physical or psychological relationship. If one was little, the other was large (Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, David Spade and Chris Farley). Wise and less so

An undercurrent in these duos is the straight man/funny man device, which was inspired by theatre logistics, not comedy potential. Never mind the errant cell phone or candy wrapper — in early American vaudeville days,

audiences were raucous to the point that dialogue couldn’t be heard at all. It was the straight man’s job to wait until the laughter had crested and slightly receded, and then repeat the comic’s lines over the din, then set up whatever joke was coming up next.

He was the conductor — of his partner’s antics, of the set, and of the audience’s momentum and experience. And as the golden years of vaudeville played out in the early 20th century, the duties of the straight man grew — more lines and more physicality, even if that physicality was to just act as ballast to his kinetic partner.

Monty Python member Eric Idle called the trope “Red Nose, White Face” in his book The Road to Mars. A robot named Carlton explicates how comedy works: In a duo, there must be a Red Nose (silly and carefree, sometimes to the point of subversiveness) and a White Face (serious and selfconscious). If you wanted to stretch it — and why not, its author was a Python and its messenger a robot — this kind of duo represents the two sides to human nature, the contrast between life and death. Not every double act fits the Red Nose/White Face framework, but there are loads of silly/serious duos — William “Bud” Abbott and Lou Costello, Lewis and Martin, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, even Farley and Spade.

When they work, their rhythm, timing, and choreography seem natural. There’s something magic in the combination, some collective alchemy or chemistry. But the magic doesn’t always carry over into the relationship offstage, or singularize itself into the individual careers of the players once the duo’s run ends.

Simon was inspired by vaudeville teams that lasted decades and remained friends, as well as those with players that were at each other’s throats. Joe Smith and Charlie Dale were the former, performing together for over 70 years — in clubs, radio, stage, TV and film — much of that time with their “Dr. Kronkheit and His Only Living Patient” skit, which resurfaces in The Sunshine Boys.

The partnership is said to be the longest in show business.

They retired together; they were buried together (with Dale’s wife). Below the “Smith and Dale” headstone headline, Smith added, “Booked Solid.”

Burns and Allen, and Laurel and Hardy, were the same way — two contrasting halves that melded into one persona, one organism. Burns continued with incarnations of his straight man bit in many parts after his beloved Gracie passed away — he slowed things down and listened, then cracked wise to mayhem around him.

“Well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten me into!”

Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys is about comedians Al Lewis and Willie Clark. As synchronized as they were on stage, they drove each other crazy once the curtain dropped. The friction between opposites — and men who parlay grief and loneliness into comedy — was something Simon also explored in The Odd Couple. But with this play, he could also write a valentine to vaudeville.

The character Al retired quietly but Willie, like a lot of vaudevillians, always craved the limelight — and the older he got, the less limelight there was. Something a bit tragic unfolded: Willie the clown became dour and angry, a real life straight man with no outlet.

Laurel and Hardy didn’t quite fall into that straight man/comic framework — they were both comics — but they certainly made a disproportionate looking pair.

The wispy Laurel and the taller, bigger Hardy’s brand of slapstick involved cartoon violence and in the silent era, nonverbal interplay.

Hardy would often break the fourth wall and look at the camera in exasperation. For talkies, which the duo nicely transitioned into, his dismayed outbursts included versions of the lament: “Well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten me into!” (We misquote him today with “Here’s another fine mess” — comedy is an oft-repeated, and oft-misquoted, genre).

After Hardy’s death in 1957, Laurel sent jokes to other comedy writers, but he steadfastly refused to work on screen or stage again, only offering gags to other comedy writers via letters. He needed a foil, he said in interviews; he knew he wasn’t as good on his own.

The buddy act grew through the 1940s as perhaps the greatest straight man/funny man of all, Abbott and Costello, transitioned to film — riding the crest of radio comedy success and zigzagging verbal routines like “Who’s On First?” Bumbling Bob Hope and suave Bing Crosby started their “Road to” movie series (Road to Singapore, Road to Zanzibar, etc.). Lewis, dominated the ’50s TV airwaves. In the final years of both duos’ runs, their repartee and bemused glances at one another masked the antagonism that fermented offstage.

The variety show forum opened up room for plenty of host pairs — Dan Rowan and dim-witted Dick Martin on LaughIn, the Smothers Brothers, and the only nominally straight man Harvey Korman, who cracked up regularly, especially during Tim Conway’s bits, on The Carol Burnett Show.

Saturday Night Live birthed many duos — Joe Piscopo and Eddie Murphy, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, Dana Carvey and Mike Myers, Farley and Spade.

We still have duos today; they’re the stuff of buddy movies and copious TV shows (Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller/Vince Vaughn; Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy; KeeganMichael Key and Jordan Peele). But to borrow a phrase from dating parlance, they don’t seem to be in committed relationships. They don’t stay together for decades; they work with a lot of other people besides each other.

We live in a long-term attention deficient era. We value novelty and brevity and multiple stimuli. Maybe there is less need for the faithful duos that vaudeville cultivated for us — because these days, for better or worse, every day is its own vaudeville.

On our three stages — the Ahmanson Theatre, the Mark Taper Forum and the Kirk Douglas Theatre — we present the highest quality and broadest range of theatre: groundbreaking new works, explosive productions of the classics and hit Broadway plays and musicals.

In the most current eight seasons alone, a total of 133 productions has been selected for presentation, including 33 world premieres. Fifteen productions have subsequently been produced in New York.

The same high standards that we apply to our stages extend to our education and community outreach programs. Through special performances, residencies at schools, discount tickets and educational materials, we reach each year over 19,000 students, educators and community members who would not otherwise experience professional theatre.

We are proud to continue our 46-year tradition of contributing to the culture of our city and to the enrichment of the national theatre community, and we are grateful to our subscribers, donors and board whose generous support makes our work possible.

For tHe tHIrD straight year, a group of CTG donors experienced a weekend of new plays at the annual ojai Playwrights Conference in August.

Fifteen donors hobnobbed with the conference’s artists and staff and saw readings of five new plays, including a one-man show by richard Cabral.

Cabral described growing up in East L.A., where he joined a gang at a young age and eventually landed in prison. upon his release, he struggled to get back on his feet until Father Greg Boyle, founder of homeboy Industries, gave him a job and a fresh start. he credited homeboy Industries and theatre with saving his life.

THE PICKLES

BY THE TIME Humor Abuse’s Lorenzo Pisoni was six years old, he was a contracted member of his parents’ Pickle Family Circus. Born and raised a Pickle, he was exposed to the inner workings of a world many of us can only dream about, a world in which, as Lorenzo says, “There are no limits. You can do whatever you think of.”

considered saying, ‘Forget it.’ There was some intense — maybe insane — group pride that enabled us to do things that none of us individually would have ever thought of attempting.” The Pickle Family Circus was an all-inclusive celebration, founded by two visionaries who fell in love — not only with the circus, but also with each other.

Lorenzo’s parents, Pickle co-founders Larry Pisoni and Peggy Snider, met while working at The San Francisco Mime Troupe in the early 1970s. They began juggling together, performing and passing the hat in Union Square. Together, they gathered a band of diverse performers — unicyclists, acrobats, jugglers, musicians and clowns — and the Pickle Family Circus opened in May 1975 in the gym of John O’Connell High School in San Francisco’s Mission District.

Larry and Peggy married, and Lorenzo was literally born into the circus; he grew as the circus did. With a large extended family of civic-minded artists, he was one of several Pickle kids who spent their childhoods on the road in backstage “tent cities,” learning tricks of the trade from a “kiddy corral” that was watched over by whoever was not onstage. “Everyone in the company was always having a good time,” Lorenzo remembers. “I think that is maybe the rarest thing I experienced as a child. I don’t know many kids who not only have a firsthand knowledge of what their parents do on a dayto-day basis, but also get to see their parents enjoying what they do — see any adults enjoying what they do.”

From the beginning, the Pickles made deliberate decisions that set them apart from the traditional American circus.

The Pickles staged performances in a single ring, without circus animals, and on an intimate scale that embraced and empowered audience members. Peggy remembers, “It was a way of leveling so that there was not really a vast difference between the audience and circus performer. It was a way of saying, ‘If you want to do something, you can do it. We are not extraordinary individuals. We are just like you.’”

The Pickles also embraced the communities from which their audiences came. Their first performance benefited Latino daycare centers in San Francisco, and up and down the West Coast they collaborated with senior centers, food pantries, and many other organizations.

With all the spirit of a neighborhood circus thrown together in somebody’s backyard, the Pickles relied on more than just the talent of its performers, who were responsible for every aspect of their business. Everyone pitched in to keep the show running, whether it meant assembling bleachers or hanging canvas, building props or personally mentoring sponsoring groups. Terry Lorant, Pickle performer and photographer, reflected on this allfor-one, one-for-all philosophy in an interview with San Francisco Chronicle columnist Jon Carroll: “We never

The adults were having such a good time, in fact, that Lorenzo could not wait to participate. “He wanted to do it all,” Larry remembers. “He wanted to do the acrobatics and the juggling. He wanted to clown; he wanted to play music.” At age two, Lorenzo began going onstage during intermission. His earliest acts were, according to his mom, “adorable” imitations of what he saw the adults do: wholehearted attempts at tumbling, clowning and juggling.

When Larry left the Pickles in 1987, Lorenzo inherited a strong sense of responsibility for the circus his father helped start. Whenever he could, the 11-yearold inserted himself into the roles his father would have performed, both onstage and off. “If they would have let me drive the bleacher truck, I probably would have jumped at the chance,” he remembers.

Lorenzo continued to perform with the Pickle Family Circus throughout his teenage years, even while attending high school full time. School introduced him to a world of possibilities outside the family business:

“I think that’s when I realized, ‘Oh, I’m not going to do circus for the rest of my life.’

Although I never would have admitted it then, because it was my identity.”

Matriculation at Vassar College across the country in upstate New York meant a fresh start for the Pickle kid. He chose to keep his unique upbringing a secret, but his anonymity was short-lived: a director called his apartment and left a message on the answering machine asking whether he wanted to be ringmaster of a circus in Tokyo. His roommates intercepted the call, and Lorenzo was forced to admit the truth. They were incredulous until he did a backflip.

After graduation, Lorenzo worked as a ringmaster in a Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show before moving to New York to pursue an acting career. After many years of success, he decided to resurrect an old idea for a show, one that had begun as a couple of anecdotes he and fellow Pickle kid Jonah Hoyle (son of Pickle clown Geoff Hoyle) had contributed to a one-night benefit act they performed as teenagers alongside their dads. They were anecdotes about growing up in the circus and being “abused in the name of humor.”

At Vassar, Lorenzo and Jonah had merged versions of these “humor abuse” monologues with old Pickle routines and a “performed history” of clowning. When Lorenzo approached Jonah about reviving the piece, Jonah declined: “Lorenzo’s story was the story of the Pickles… I told him that he should make it a solo show. And that he should make it as personal and as honest as he could.”

With the help of director, writer and Vassar friend Erica Schmidt, Lorenzo set out to do just that. Erica focused on the autobiographical elements, helping Lorenzo to see what was already there: the story of a father and a son. The show was produced by Manhattan Theatre Club in New York City Center — with Larry in the audience.

“I don’t know that he quite knew how to process it,” says Lorenzo. “I really do think [the piece is] loving and celebratory… He did a really great job as a parent, and he’s a great clown.”

“I am just incredibly proud,” Larry says of Lorenzo’s performance in Humor Abuse. “I think it is really quite a wonderful gift. It is what I had to pass on to him, and I did.”

During performances of Humor Abuse, Lorenzo sometimes hears an audience member laugh and knows that there is a Pickle in the house. It is the laughter of someone who has been reminded of something forgotten. Lorenzo is happy to remind us: “I love that the Pickles can live on in some way. I love that I’m using the circus’ original backdrop in the show, and I love that I’m using props that my parents built and used in the ring. It’s a little walk down memory lane for a lot of people.” Lorenzo included. ▪

MICHAEL RITCHIE (Artistic Director) is in his eighth season as Center Theatre Group’s Artistic Director, and has led over 130 productions to the Ahmanson, Taper and Douglas stages since his arrival in 2005. From 1996 to 2004 Michael was the Producer of the Williamstown Theatre Festival and prior to that he was a Production Stage Manager in NYC. At CTG, he premiered six musicals that moved to Broadway — The Drowsy Chaperone (which won 13 Tony Award nominations), Curtains (eight Tony nominations) 13, 9 to 5: The Musical, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and Leap of Faith. He has produced 33 world premieres including the musicals Minsky’s, Venice and Sleeping Beauty Wakes, and the plays Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo (a Pulitzer Prize finalist that also moved to Broadway), Water & Power and Yellow Face, and he presented a broad range of plays and musicals ranging from Dead End to The Black Rider to Edward Scissorhands to blockbusters such as God of Carnage, Mary Poppins, Jersey Boys and August: Osage County. In addition, Michael inaugurated CTG’s New Play Production Program, designed to foster the development and production of new work.

EDWARD L. RADA (Managing Director) returned to Center Theatre Group in 2011 after previously serving as CTG’s Chief Financial Officer for 12 years (1996 – 2008). Rada spent three years (2008 – 2011) as President of the Music Center Foundation, a non-profit corporation that holds and invests the endowment and reserve funds for the Music Center and its resident companies (including CTG).

Prior to his years at CTG, he was the Director of Finance at The Old Globe in San Diego and principal of Rada & Associates, an accounting firm that specialized in entertainment-related

non-profit organizations and theatrical productions. He is a graduate of Occidental College in Los Angeles with numerous post-graduate coursework and credentials. He currently serves on the board of directors for Entertainment Industry Foundation, Theatre @ Boston Court, and United Support of Artists for Africa/USA for Africa, among other affiliations. DOUGLAS C. BAKER (Producing Director) is now in his 23rd season at CTG. Previously, he managed Broadway and touring productions including Tru, Born Yesterday, The Gospel at Colonus, Annie, A Chorus Line, Working, The Wiz, and Legends!, which premiered at the Ahmanson Theatre in 1986 and starred Mary Martin and Carol Channing. Doug is a member of the Achievement Hall of Fame of Chagrin Falls Schools in Ohio and a graduate of Albion College. He is an active member of the Broadway League, the Independent Presenters Network and is a proud member of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers. In May 2013 Doug received The Broadway League’s prestigious Outstanding Achievement in Presenter Management Award.

KELLEY KIRKPATRICK (Associate Artistic Director). Since arriving at CTG in 2005, Kelley has produced over 40 productions at the Ahmanson Theatre, Mark Taper Forum and Kirk Douglas Theatre, many of which have gone on to future lives on Broadway, off-Broadway and beyond. In addition to producing shows across CTG’s three stages, he has had the privilege of collaborating with numerous local and national artists to commission and develop new works.

GORDON DAVIDSON (Founding Artistic Director) led the Taper throughout its first 38 seasons, guiding over 300 productions to its stage and winning countless awards for himself and the theatre — including the Tony Award for theatrical excellence, Margo Jones Award, The Governor’s Award for the Arts and a Guggenheim fellowship. The Kentucky Cycle and Angels in America (Part One) won the Pulitzer in consecutive years and, in 1994, three of the four plays nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play were from the Taper (Angels in America won). In 1989 Gordon took over the Ahmanson and, in 2004, he produced the inaugural season in the Kirk Douglas Theatre.
