EDGETAKINGTHEOFF WITH ALICIA GARZA

ALICIA GARZA

Lady Don’t Take No just hit it’s 100th episode and has Garza is a dynamic commentator on politics, music, fashion and entertainment who serves up her own brand of everyday realness. From political activism and organizing, to binge watching reality TV, cooking up NYT’s recipes (with extra seasoning of course) or debating the tasting notes of Tequila vs. Mezcal, her fresh perspective is one that keeps on giving.

Alicia Garza is the co-creator of #BlackLivesMatter and the BLM global network, founder of Black Futures Lab and co-founder of Supermajority, a new home for women’s activism. Her book “Purpose to Power: How We Come Together When We Fall Apart” was listed as one of 2020’s most important reads. Garza’s popular weekly podcast

Alicia is always on the go and traveling all across the US and internationally for work- so her schedule can get a little crazy! You might catch her on a rooftop bar in Mexico City, where she gets a Facetime from Diddy about organizing black political power, then she’s shooting off to Oakland in time to get her hair done and hit up the Janelle Monae concert. A few days later lands in New Orleans to speak at Essence fest where she runs into San Francisco mayor London Breed who invites her backstage at Janet Jackson. At 6AM she’s at it again hopping on a flight to New York for a lunch of Mushu pork with a donor in Soho and then she’s off to LA to speak on a panel with her girl Angela Rye. In her new series Taking The Edge Off, we’re along for the ride as Alicia carves out some time on the go from her intense work life to blow off steam and have some sticky conversations with friends, celebrities and influencers about the state of the world and how to find levity in the craziness of it all.

ABOUT THE SHOW

In every episode we’ll be with Alicia as she walks off a CNN set or a speaking engagement and meets up with a celebrity friend local to the city she’s in. Think of her and Gabrielle Union sipping Margaritas and talking about Transphobia in sports culture and what they think of Kelis’ criticizing Beyonce, or bonding with her friend actor Omar Dorsey about their love of sneakers but then going head to head about Dave Chapelle and what kind of freedom of expression an artist really should have. Alicia has the unique ability and POV to have tough conversations with people who don’t always agree with her while also bringing levity and connecting with them about fashion, music and culture.

The second activity is designed to be an active way to “take the edge off” where Alicia and her guest will get out of their comfort zone and try something new. So every episode, right after they get finished breaking bread, we’ll take them kayaking, indoor skydiving, hell we might even go horseback riding with Soledad O’Brien.

Alicia touches down and tells us why she’s traveled to this location for work, where she’s at emotionally and explains why she’s ready for a break!
