BILLY COTTON FOR SOANE BRITAIN
Soane has collaborated with American designer Billy Cotton on a wide-ranging collection of fabrics, wallpapers, furniture and lighting. Cotton is known for his boundary-pushing work, often deeply and sensitively rooted in heritage.
Having made bespoke designs for Cotton’s projects over many years, Soane’s founder Lulu Lytle encouraged him to draw upon as many of Soane’s craft skills as he needed to fulfill his vision. “I was particularly interested in how Billy had previously incorporated Soane designs into his projects, making even the more traditional designs feel really current,” says Lytle. “I was especially keen for Billy to set us new challenges in terms of technique and use of materials. Our workshops rose to his challenge and were keen to exceed Billy’s expectations!”

Working closely with Soane’s in-house technicians and utilising the skills of a network of the finest independent craft workshops in Britain, the result is a testament to Cotton and Lytle’s shared values; of preservation and innovation, a delicate balance between honouring tradition and pioneering practices. This cross-collaboration has led to Soane’s most technically demanding collection to date.
Cotton says, “Soane is one of the few companies in the world that is able to produce new, meaningful design at the highest level. One of the most extraordinary things about working with Soane was its commitment to British craft. We worked with rattan weavers, saddlers, cabinet makers, metal engineers, fabric and wallpaper printers and every single piece was made in Britain.”
