WHILE BUILDING A green economy is still paramount to us, here at GGD, over the past few years we have made a effort to also highlight locally made products by locally owned businesses, recognizing that a truly green economy is also one that is resilient—an economy that protects the natural beauty and resources of the Spokane area while also creating jobs and building wealth.

This past spring, I attended the BALLE (Business Alliance for Local Living Economies) Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was a fantastic conference for many reasons, and I hope to entice many more Spokanites to attend next year’s conference with me in Bufallo, NY. BALLE is a national non-profit that has been on the leading edge of all things local—shop local, invest local, bank local, make local.

BALLE has helped develop innumerable studies showing the benefits of a strong, resilient local economy, the least of which is job creation. A study completed in 2008 by Civic Economics for Grand Rapids and Kent County, looked at the impact of local businesses on the west Michigan economy. The study found that a 10% shift in market share from chain stores to local stores, across the retail landscape, would result in the creation of up to 1600 jobs with $53 million in wages being added to local payrolls. Overall output for the County would also be increased by up to $137 million, affecting numerous industries beyond retail.

While the benefits of shopping local have been on many people’s radar these past few years, a newer term that lots of 4

locally-minded economic development folks are throwing around is, “import replacement theory.” The idea behind it is to produce more of locally what we consume locally.

This saves on energy for transportation, creates jobs, makes us not quite so reliant on potentially unstable outside markets, and allows our dollar to circulate to and ever greater extent within our local economy— generating lots of nice revenue for our schools, libraries, parks, and roads.

If there were some place where an individual or a small company could go to make a prototype or small run of the product they designed, some of these great ideas could come to market.

A New York Times article in March of 2011 entitled, “The Future of Manufacturing is Local,” covered this new approach to economic development. The article

i nter v ie we d Ma rk D w ig ht t he founder of SFMade, a San Francisco nonprofit whose mission is to build San Francisco’s economic base by developing the local manufacturing sector, and whose motto is, “Yes, we still make things in San Francisco.”

According to Dwight in the article: For decades we have developed a culture of disposability — from consumer goods to medical instruments and machine tools. To fuel economic growth, marketers replaced longevity with planned obsolescence — and our mastery of technology has given birth to ever-accelerating unplanned obsolescence. I think there is increasing awareness that this is no longer sustainable on the scale we have developed.

I saw a presentation by SFMade at the BALLE Conference and their numbers are impressive. Since forming in 2010, SFMade has increased exports from San Francisco by 20%.

The nonprofit works hard to connect manufacturers, share resources, and to provide education and assistance on everything from zoning to sourcing to taxes. They have also done a nice job branding products made within the City—all this has helped build public awareness and has attracted national retailers such as Banana Republic now wanting to carry products with the SFMade logo.

Most of the manufacturers coming out of SFMade are low-tech and smallscale, funny thing, coming from a city closely connected with Silicon Valley. And many of their investors come from that same Valley. One such

entrepreneur that I met at BALLE, was Rebecca Burgess, founder of Fiber Shed. Fiber Shed is looking to utilize some of the 22,000 pounds of wool discarded every year in northern California to produce local fiber, with local dyes using local labor.

Much of Rebecca’s funding comes from Silicon Valley.

And what is the potential for Spokane regarding locally made and manufactured? At Sun People, my own independent locally-owned business, we are getting more and more requests for locally made products from customers. I have also talked with Russ Nobbs at Rings & Things regarding his frustration in finding local manufacturers for many of their jewelry components.

While Sarah McGovern, a local professional designer and owner of the Design Collaborative co-working space, would love to see a small-scale manufacturing incubator similar to the Green Garage in Detroit or the Bonner County Business incubator in Sandpoint, developed here in Spokane.

“I have seen many great ideas for sustainable products not come into fruition because there is a manufacturing barrier. Even making a prototype is often impractical.

If there were some place—like a shared shop—where an individual or a small company could go to make a prototype or small run of the product they designed, some of these great ideas could come to market. It is frustrating to see these ideas stymied after the design stage because it’s too expensive or difficult to produce them,” says McGovern.

While this issue of the Go Green Made Local section has expanded, we would love to see it double in size in the next few years. WHY PLAN? Because Smart Cities Plan for the Future.

In the next 20 years, the population of the Spokane metro area is expected to increase by 100,000 residents; and it’s no wonder. Spokane is a great place to live. But as the region grows, the demand for great public transportation grows right along with it. STA currently provides up to 11 million rides each year. That’s as much as 40,000 rides a day. Now just imagine how much the demand for reliable public transportation will grow.

What could Spokane’s public transportation system look like in five, 10 and 20 years?

Over the last few years, STA has worked with the community to create a vision of the High Performance Transit Network (HPT) of the future. HPT is a series of local and regional transportation corridors offering frequent, reliable, all day mass transit service. As 38

a whole, the HPT provides a higher level of mobility, allowing customers greater access to the public transportation system and the ability to reach more destinations.

Now it’s time to take a closer look at some potential HPT projects and decide which ones warrant further study. What is the best corridor and type of vehicle to transport riders to and from the North Side or the South Hill?

How about from Spokane to Cheney or Coeur d’Alene? How should people travel around the Medical and University Districts? By asking these important questions now, STA will be ready to provide the services the community will need when the time is right and funding becomes available.
