The sights, smells and flavors of barbeque will be abundant in Shawnee Saturday as teams compete
in the “Hot Pursuit” cookoff benefit for the Shawnee Police Foundation. The family-friendly event, scheduled 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center, 1700 W. Independence, is sanctioned by the Kansas

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Air National Guard unit is beginning a transition to a Special Operations Wing with the arrival of its first MC-12W aircraft. The first of 13 of the MC12W aircraft was delivered earlier this month to the 137th Air Refueling Wing at Will Rogers Air National Guard Base in Oklahoma City. Military officials say the aircraft’s arrival marks the return of flying operations to the guard base for the first time since 2007. The MC-12 is a mediumto low-altitude, twin-engine turboprop aircraft. Its primary mission is to provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support directly to ground forces serving overseas.
Legislator eyes creation of central state bank OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma legislators will explore creating a central state bank that could potentially loan money to students to attend college or help finance projects for schools or municipalities. Republican state Rep. John Montgomery of Lawton requested an interim study on the proposal and it’s been assigned to the House Banking Committee. A hearing on the plan has not been scheduled. Montgomery said a constituent approached him with the idea, and he thought it was worth exploring. One other state — North Dakota — has a state bank that would be used as a model. Montgomery acknowledged the idea would likely require significant changes in state law and, potentially, the Oklahoma Constitution. Oklahoma Banking Department Deputy Commissioner Dudley Gilbert says the agency has several questions about how such a bank would operate.
