Oklahoma’s unemployment rate continues to climb OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma’s unemployment rate is continuing to climb, reaching 4.5 percent last month with major losses in the retail-trade sector. The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission reported Tuesday the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in June increased for the third straight month. It jumped two-tenths of 1 percent from 4.3 percent in May. The commission reported Oklahoma shed a total of 2,100 jobs last month, with more than half of those in the retail-trade sector. Another 900 jobs were lost in the local, state and federal government. Oklahoma actually saw an increase of about 100 jobs in the oil and gas sector and 1,000 new construction jobs. Oklahoma’s unemployment rate was still well below the national average of 5.3 percent last month.
AAA:Oklahoma pump prices highest so far this year OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — AAA Oklahoma says gasoline prices in the state have moved higher over the last few days and are now at the highest level so far this year. AAA says the state average for self-serve regular gas stands at $2.64 per gallon, the highest price average since Nov. 22. AAA spokesman Chuck Mai says the price spike is contrary to what is happening in other parts of the country. The national average has been moving steadily downward, dropping more than two cents in the past week to $2.75 per gallon. Gas prices in the central U.S. began to jump last week along areas serviced by the Magellan pipeline. Refinery problems forced

Keylee’s stand against cancer By Vicky O. Misa Vicky.misa@news-star.com
Keylee Landes has a heart for helping others. At the tender age of six, while she was on vacation at Disney World, she had a very brief, yet unforgettable encounter with a little girl who had cancer. Keylee said she was very sad when she saw the girl in a wheelchair at the park. She went over to
talk to her, but instead had to speak to her mother, because young Melanie was to weak to talk. Keylee and her mom, Katie Landes, were quite impacted by the exchange. Since that trip Keylee has been searching for ways to help children with cancer. “It’s nice to let cancer patients know that people love KEYLEE, Page 5A

ATM SAFETY
Police: $400 crime of opportunity By Kim Morava Kimberly.morava@news-star.com Twitter: @Kim_NewsStar
Shawnee police are warning those who use automatic teller machines to practice safety after a suspect got away with $400 in what was a crime of opportunity. Shawnee Police Detective Ronnie
Wilson said a woman tried to make a withdrawal from an ATM in town. She entered too much and then drove off from the area. “The ATM gave her the opportunity to try again,” he said. A male suspect drove up, saw the open screen and was able to enter and take $400, Wilson said.
As part of the ongoing investigation, Wilson worked to identify the suspect so that case can be referred to the district attorney’s office. This incident has prompted police to remind those who use ATMs to watch around them and to ensure the screen is cleared out before driving away.

Senate negotiators reach highway bill deal; action delayed WASHINGTON (AP) — With a deadline looming for a cutoff of highway aid to states, Senate Republicans failed Tuesday to muster enough votes to take up a bill that would extend transportation programs for six years. Democrats complained
they’d had only an hour to read the 1,040-page bill. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, RKy., said he would give Democrats more time, but added he intends to push forward with the bill even if it means keeping the Senate in session over the

Country music stars Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert announced their divorce after four years of marriage Monday and it appears while they never appeared in a Shawnee courtroom, their divorce was reportedly granted in Pottawatomie County District Court. A filing involving B.T.S. vs. M.L.S. was filed in Pottawatomie County earlier this month and a divorce was officially granted in that case on Monday, court records show, but everything in that case is under seal. Pottawatomie County zen said because the case is sealed she couldn’t confirm if the filing indeed involves the well-known country music duo. “We have no divorce under their name,” she said. Ueltzen said she received calls all day Tuesday from media around the U.S., including Entertainment Tonight and Access Hollywood. Some of those callers were asking how to file motions in an attempt to unseal the alleged divorce papers, she said. The couple did release a statement to The Associated Press, which was issued by their representatives. “This is not the future we envisioned,” the former couple said in the statement. “And it is with heavy hearts that we move forward separately. We are real people, with real lives, with real families, friends and colleagues. Therefore, we kindly ask for privacy and compassion concerning this very personal matter.”
