Overnight pursuit Man arrested on drug, eluding charges after pursuit leads to foot chase By Kim Morava Kimberly.morava@news-star. com

he other day, there was a movie I wanted to see, so I got in my car and drove to the theater to watch it. I didn’t bother asking anyone to go along. I doubted any of my friends would be interested (we generally like the same movies, but not always). Not to mention, the only time I could watch the movie was a time inconvenient for most of my social circle, because most of them keep completely different hours than I do. That’s fine by me. I actually really like going to movies alone. A few years ago, the only friends who lived close to me didn’t like any of the same movies I liked. If I went to the movies with a group, it was to watch something I didn’t really care for, like silly comedy movies full of innuendos. Anything I wanted to watch, I either had to watch on my own or wait for the video. So I thought, “Well, why not just go alone?” It’s been a habit ever since. I go to the movies a lot, and rarely with other people. But I tend to value my alone time. I love when I get to hang out with my friends and play board games or go out to dinner or whatever else in on the agenda for the night. Sometimes, though, I just really need some time to myself. I need a day to just stay at home and watch some DVDs or read some books, or really do just about anything that doesn’t involve being around other people. Much as I love my friends and family, there are times when I just need to be alone. One thing I miss about living in the country is being about to just walk around outside and not come across other people. A peaceful, solitary walk in nature is good for the soul sometimes. Just like curling up with a blanket, a cup of hot tea (or hot chocolate), and a good book. Then again, maybe that’s just the introvert in me. ——— Tina Bridenstine is a page designer for The Shawnee News-Star.

of marijuana along with an outstanding felony warrant. Blanchard was booked into the Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center, where he remained jailed Wednesday on $10,000 bond; formal charges have not been filed.
In addition, Blanchard also is being held without bond on a Hughes County felony warrant for trafficking in illegal drugs, court records show. Blanchard was arrested after a series of events that began when Shawnee Police Officer Richard Ruiz attempted to stop a Hyun-
dai Sonata on Ninth Street near Harrison just after 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. The driver, later identified as Blanchard, allegedly didn’t stop at a stop sign and then accelerated to turn eastbound onto Buck Drive from Harrison Street PURSUIT, Page 5A

A third suspect being sought by Shawnee police in the 2011 murder of a homeless man was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Stillwater. Shawnee Police Chief Russell Frantz said authorities tracked down Anthony Neal Wood, 21, who had an outstanding first-degree murder warrant from Pottawatomie County. Shawnee Police Detectives Ethan Rieves and Ronnie Wilson were with the U.S. Marshals Service and members of its Metro Fugitive Task Force when the arrest was made. Wood, of Shawnee, and two others already in custody were identified as suspects in the 2011 homicide of Alan Wade Branscum, 54. An anonymous tip and further investigation by Shawnee police led to detectives solving that case. Branscum, an Arkansas native who was living homeless in Shawnee, was found dead under the Beard Street Bridge in the 800 block of South Beard on the morning of Aug. 6, 2011. The case filed in Pottawatomie County District Court shows Wood, Leland Dale Blanchard Jr., 19, of Shawnee, and Keenan Allen Thorpe, 23, of McLoud, are all three charged in the homicide. Blanchard and Thorpe were arrested last week and are being held without bond in the Pottawatomie County UPDATE, Page 5A
