Spare the rod, spoil the child

he title of this column harkens back to that age-old disciplinary tool of whipping a kid when he or she did something wrong. I’ve seen parents use the “timeout” method of discipline, and I’ve even seen parents beg, barter with and flat out bribe a child in the hopes that the behavior would improve. My folks had a graduated scale for dealing with my wrongdoings. If my crime warranted a stern speech, that’s what I got. If my crime warranted that I be grounded for a week, that’s what I got. But if my crime warranted a hot fanny… well… that’s what I got. It usually amounted to a couple of swift open-palm whacks to the backside, which was plenty for getting my attention, but I remember one time in particular when Dad drove the message home a little more fiercely. On a particularly sunny summer day, he caught me and some of my neighborhood friends standing in the road playing traffic cop… with real cars. Needless to say, he was less than amused. He promptly carted me into the house and promptly found his weapon of choice — my paddle ball. With a quick tug, the ball and elastic string were detached, and all that was left was the ideal spanking tool. So not only did I get my swats, but I lost a favorite toy in the process. And to this day I get goose bumps when I see a paddle ball. My uncle told me a story that still confuses me. I’ll never understand why anyone would willingly carry out this plan. Apparently he decided it would be fun to hide anything and everything my grandmother could use for spanking him, and then deliberately do something that would bring down her thunder and lightning. His jollies came from watching her frantically search the house for a whoopin’ stick, but he grossly miscalculated how off-the-charts her rage would go during this process. Obviously, he never duplicated that little stunt. Note: Just to clear the air, I don’t want this to be interpreted as me having come from an abusive family. Nothing could be further from the truth. But I do come from a family that demands respect from its children, and because the rod was not spared, not one of us was spoiled.

Shawnee police continue to investigate a shots-fired incident after a security guard discharged a weapon at a vehicle during an incident in the parking lot of Dietrich’s Bar. A filed police report indi-

cates a security guard shot at a vehicle that was accelerating toward another security guard after the occupants were asked to leave the bar, which resulted in a passenger being hit by gunfire. The driver of the vehicle fled, but a person showed up at a hospital emergency

As police sorted out the scene, they learned there had been a fight inside the bar and a security guard was trying to get two individuals in a Lexus to leave when the driver allegedly yelled at another security guard and accelerated the Lexus toward that guard in an attempt to hit him, the

report shows. At that point, the other security guard fired at the Lexus four or five times until the vehicle stopped, the report reads. The passenger, later identified as Joseph M. Davis, 35, of Seminole, got SHOTS, Page 5A

Cave-in on Country Club road The details: • Cul-de-sac off Highland that runs under Country Club road fills up when it rains, causing moisture to soak into cracks. • Cracks in the culvert over time creates a void, resulting in a cave-in. • The city plans on replacing the whole section where the cave-in occurred. • The city plans on replacing one side of the street at a time in order for residents to have access to the road. • Construction is planned to start at the beginning of next week after parts are ordered. • The project is expected to take around three to four weeks.

The cul-de-sac off Highland that runs under Country Club road collapsed recently and will be replaced beginning next week. ED BLOCHOWIAK STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER

Workers clean debris, help fix flooding caused by tornado By Jessica Walker jessica.walker@news-star.com

The city of Shawnee recently received a federal grant, which provides workers from East Central Workforce to help in relief efforts from the May 19 tornado.

“The workers from East Central Workforce have been doing an excellent job in cleaning out the creek areas they’ve been assigned,” said City Engineer John Krywicki. Krywicki said the creek in the Larkins Meadow

area has been cleared but the area of overgrown grass and weeds is on private property and is the responsibility of the property owner. The workers from East Central Workforce are helping to clear out debris
