SMGS Pockets, Half Colours and Full Colours

Blazer Recognition – Pockets, Half Colours and Full Colours SMGS recognises achievement in Academic and Sporting pursuits. This is done through the allocation of Pockets, Half and Full Colours.

Awards are embroidered onto the school blazer by South East Embroidery in Cooma and display the award and year achieved, eg Academic Honours 2023; Mountain Biking 2023.

The cost of embroidery is to be covered by parents.

Academic Honours and Endeavour Academic Honours This recognises that a student has consistently achieved at the highest level academically across all subject areas. Each term the marks for all subjects is averaged. If the average mark is 80% or nigher, the student will receive Academic Honours for that term. Marks for successive terms are added to the previous term. In order for a student to maintain Academic Honours, each term a student must achieve an average of 80 or above.

If a student retains a mark of 80 or above by the end of Term 4, they will be awarded with an Academic Honours certificate at Speech Day and will be eligible to have this embroided on their Blazer.

Academic Endeavour This recognises that a student has consistently demonstrated high levels of effort in the classroom across all subject areas. Each term the effort grades for each student are converted into numbers and averaged to produce a Grade Point Average (GPA). Students who achieve an GPA of 4.5 out of 5 or higher will receive Academic Endeavour for that term.

Marks for successive terms are added to the previous term. In order for a student to maintain Academic Endeavour, each term a student must achieve a GPA of 4.5 or above.

If a student retains a GPA of 4.5 or above by the end of Term 4, they will be awarded with an Academic Endeavour certificate at Speech Day and will be eligible to have this embroided on their Blazer.

Embroidery - Academic Honours and Endeavour Pockets – (White stitching): Pockets are awarded to a student in Year 7 or Year 8 who has met the following criteria: 1. Academic Honours 2. Academic Endeavour Half Colours (Blue stitching): Half Colours are awarded to a student in Year 9 or Year 10 who has met the following criteria: 1. Academic Honours 2. Academic Endeavour Full Colours (Gold stitching): Full Colours are awarded to a student in Year 11 or Year 12 who has met the following criteria: 1. Academic Honours

Embroidery - Academic Awards Pockets – (White stitching): Pockets are awarded to a student who has met the following criteria: 1. Minimum two years representation in their chosen academic activity representing SMGS eg Public Speaking, Debating, Performing Arts 2. Year 8 is the first opportunity to receive a pocket 3. Commendable levels of commitment and engagement in activity Half Colours (Blue stitching): Half colours are awarded to a student who has met the following criteria: 1. Minimum three years representation in their chosen academic activity representing SMGS eg Public Speaking, Debating, Performing Arts 2. The student is in Year 9 or above 3. The student has represented the school in an external event linked with their chosen academic activity eg Lions Club, Toastmasters, singing competitions 4. Outstanding levels of commitment and engagement in activity Full Colours (Gold stitching): Full colours are awarded to a student who has met the following criteria: 1. Minimum five years representation in their chosen academic activity representing SMGS eg Public Speaking, Debating, Performing Arts 2. The student is in Year 11 or above 3. The student has successfully represented the school in an external event linked with their chosen academic activity eg Lions Club, Toastmasters, singing competitions 4. Exemplary levels of commitment, engagement and leadership in activity NB: At all times the recommendation of Pockets, Half Colours and Full Colours is at the discretion of the Teacher in Charge.

Embroidery - Sporting Awards Pockets (White stitching): Pockets are awarded to an athlete who has met the following criteria: 1. Minimum two years representation in their chosen sport as part of an SMGS team 2. Year 8 is the first opportunity to receive a pocket; a student may receive a pocket for the same sport in more than one year, eg. Year 8 and Year 9 3. Commendable levels of commitment and sportsmanship Half Colours (Blue stitching): Half colours are awarded to an athlete who has met the following criteria: 1. Minimum three years representation in their chosen sport as part of a SMGS team 2. The athlete is in Year 9 or above 3. Outstanding levels of commitment and sportsmanship Full Colours (Gold stitching): Full colours are awarded to an athlete who has met the following criteria: 1. Minimum five years representation in their chosen sport as part of a SMGS team 2. The athlete is in Year 11 or above 3. Elite Level of representation at National level or equivalent as determined by the Director of Sport 4. Exemplary levels of commitment, sportsmanship and leadership NB: At all times the recommendation of Pockets, Half Colours and Full Colours is at the discretion of the Teacher in Charge.
