The Snowy Mountains Grammar School Athletics Carnival is to be run at Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre on Friday 15 May 2026.

General Information
The Athletics Carnival is planned to be a fun day full of enthusiasm and house camaraderie. As much as possible, all students are encouraged to ‘have a go’. The emphasis is on earning points for their house, rather than only on winning.
The Athletics Carnival is a compulsory school day. The carnival is a significant school event that contributes to house and school spirit. All students are expected to participate by either competing or supporting their peers. A medical certificate is required if your child cannot attend. As this event is held off-site, it is a requirement that all parents and/or carers log in to Sentral and complete the online permission for their son or daughter.
Students must bring their required medication with them to the carnival, i.e. EpiPen, asthma medication, etc. Please note there will be no strapping facilities available at the carnival. Parents/carers, please ensure that your son’s/daughter’s medical information is up to date on Sentral prior to their attending the carnival.
Transport
• All children will be transported from school, departing from 9:00 am.
• K-2 will depart at 11:15 am.
• Senior School students will be transported back to the school for normal bus times at the conclusion of the day, 3:15 pm.
Please Note: Parents/carers who wish to collect their child from the carnival, please make sure to sign them out with their Head of House or, for Junior School, their classroom teacher.
Uniform and What to Bring
Students should come in their sports shorts, runners and house shirts. Students should also bring a hat, sunscreen, lunch and a water bottle. Please also pack warm clothing in case of cold weather. This includes the SMGS soft shell jacket, fleece, beanie and navy track pants. Non-school uniform is unacceptable.
Shoes: spikes are allowed for all championship running events (all events) as well as for laned divisional events (100m, 200m, 400m) and all jump events (maximum 7mm length for track and 9mm for jumps); otherwise, sneakers are to be worn.
Food and Drink
Year 12 will operate a canteen on the day. They will offer drinks, a BBQ and cakes. All other food should be brought with the students. All students MUST have a water bottle.
Students are encouraged to bring plenty of water, fruit and wholesome foods from home, e.g. sandwiches, wraps, etc., to provide them with a nutritious food source for the day. Students should drink plenty of water throughout the day, particularly prior to and after competing in events. No glass bottles or containers are to be brought to the venue under any circumstances.
Parents
Parents are very welcome to join us for all or part of the day. If you would like to offer some assistance, please put a note on the permission slip. All help will be much appreciated.
K-2 Events on the Day
K-2 students should be dropped at school at the normal time. They will need their lunch, drink and a water bottle. There is a special program of events for children in K-2, including a sprint, shot put and novelty events. These events will take place between 12:25 - 2:30 pm, with lunch at 1:00 pm.
K-2 students are only allowed to compete in the K-2 events. We are aware that some students will turn eight years old in Year 2. However, these students are not permitted to compete in the Under 8 Years’ race. All K-2 students have the opportunity to participate in the K-2 races. Once students are in Year 3, they will have the opportunity to compete in the age races.
Students will be transported back to school for normal bus times. If you do collect your child, please make sure to sign them out with their normal classroom teacher.
Event Information and Rules
What age group do I compete in?
Students need to compete in all events in their age groups only (age at 31/12/2026). For example, if you turn fourteen this year (before 31/2/26), you compete in the U14 races.
No students may compete up or down an age group; students must compete in their correct age groups.
• Junior relay races are open to Years 3-6.
• Middle relay races are open to Years 7-9.
• Senior relay races are open to Years 10-12.
• K-2 students are only allowed to compete in the K-2 events.
All events are under race conditions
• Students are to sit in house areas when not competing.
• The announcer will call events as per the program.
• Students are asked not to congregate in the marshalling area until their race has been called.
• Races will be combined by the Carnival Convenor and marshals if numbers allow.
• All students are expected to try their best and respect the environment. If a student is disrupting the carnival by not making a serious attempt during their event, they will be removed from the event.
• Ribbons are to third place in every championship event.
Track Events
• The 800m (Years 3-12 Tuesday 5 May) and the 1500m (Years 7-12 Thursday 7 May) races have been run prior to the carnival.
• All other track events will be sorted into heats, with the fastest time taking 1st place, followed by 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th etc.
• Track events take precedence over field events. A competitor must be able to leave a field event to run on the track. Once complete, it is up the to the student to return to the field event and finish the competition.
Field Events
• Qualifying distances will be set prior to the carnival.
• Jumpers/throwers will be given one chance to make the qualifying distance.
• The top 6 students will proceed into the final and be given additional jumps/ throws. They will then be eligible for finalist points as well as receiving a participation point.
• If jumpers/throwers do not proceed to a final, they will receive one participation point.
Additional Races
• Relays - the order of the 4x100m relay will be as follows:
• Junior School (Years 4-6)
• Middle School (Years 7-9)
• Senior School (Years 10-12)
• We will host a Champion of Champions race for both girls and boys which will be held at the end of the day if time permits. This will comprise the eight fastest 100m students in the carnival (please note that points are not awarded for this event).
Points for Events
Points allocation for inter-house competition and individual age champions are:
• Field and track events, place-getters will receive:
• 1st - 10 points
• 2nd - 8 points
• 3rd - 6 points
• 4th - 4 points
• 5th - 2 points
• 1 point for student participation in an any event
• Relay point scores:
• 1st - 16 points
• 2nd - 12 points
• 3rd - 8 points
• 4th - 4 points
House Shield
Student participation points and event place points count towards the house total. The house with the highest overall point score will win the House Shield.
