Owned and operated independently of major funding or political bodies, indie magazines, or ‘indies’ provide a voice for sub- and co-cultures, and offer a valuable, alternative perspective to mainstream media channels. Australian researcher, Le Masurier described indie magazines as a “celebration of the underrepresented manifestations of popular culture and creative work from independent producers of fashion, design, the visual arts, photography, music and film” (2012, p.384). The term ‘indie’, was originally used to describe the independent production of media such as music or film, but now carries broader associations. It connotes an “alternative, hip, edgy, [and] uncompromising” feel (Newman 2009, p.16) and is used in a variety of contexts.

“A magazine may look great and feel great, yet without attitude it wont get very far.”
