“How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. December is here before it’s June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?“ – Dr. Seuss

appy December, Northern Nevada! Along with Dr. Seuss, I, too, am perplexed. We are deeply immersed in the holiday season – family, friends and festivities are here to bid 2016 adieu. Where did the year go? This month, it’s important to address your mental and physical health. The libations and celebrations of the season tend to distract us from what’s good for our bodies – healthy foods, exercise and peace. I tend to lose all sense of what’s good for my mind and body during the holidays – the stresses of buying gifts for family and friends and baking mass amounts of sugar-packed goodies take over, and my dedication to healthy living falters. So, I’m gifting myself with health this December. I plan to stay active by hitting the slopes and enjoying the beauty of our area, I plan to shop local at Northern Nevada’s businesses and boutiques, and I plan to fuel my body with fresh fruits and vegetables. In this issue, we provide you with a few health-inspired gift ideas to share with your loved ones, and we offer a few tips to

help you have a ‘green’ holiday this season. We also introduce a 3-part series focused on brain healing, and we highlight the wonderful work of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. We’re working on some exciting changes behind the scenes here at Healthy Beginnings, executing our New Year’s resolution early. In 2017, we will provide you – Northern Nevada – with more. More resources and information to help you on your path to wellness. Keep an eye out for us in January – we’ll be donning a new design, too! Please connect with us if you have questions, comments or ideas. Follow us and engage with our social platforms and content. And, of course, we wish you a lovely, peaceful and healthy December. Cheers, Gabrielle Irvin

he holiday season is now in full swing – and along with good holiday cheer comes a lot of extra waste. Americans throw away 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s compared to any other time of the year. The extra waste amounts to about 1.2 million extra tons per week. That’s an extra 6 million tons during the entire holiday season. “We can all save money and time and reduce our impact on the environment by looking for more creative, sustainable gift options,” said Carol Weaver of Waste Management of Nevada. “Whether it’s buying products made from organic or recycled content or giving the gift of time to a favorite charity, if each of us tried a

few waste reduction efforts, we would see a significant positive impact during the holiday season.“ Here are several ways to make this holiday season greener: • Consider giving no-waste gifts, such as music or sports lessons, memberships to a gym, symphony or museum, favors like babysitting or tickets to a sporting event or concert. Find out the gift recipients favorite charity and donate in his or her honor, or commit to volunteering time with that organization. • There are many products made from recycled or organic content that make great gifts – look for bags or fleece cloth-

ing made from recycled plastic bottles or organic cotton T-shirts or other apparel. • For the trend-setter on your shopping list, purchase vintage clothing or accessories from consignment or second-hand stores. Help keep the re-use cycle going by donating clothes and accessories you no longer want to these establishments or charities in our community. • Give potted plants, flowers or trees that the recipient can plant in the garden or yard – not only will it be a gift that continues to be a beautiful reminder of the holidays throughout the year, but it will also provide benefits to the environment by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen into the air.

Dry skin is a recurring – and can even be longterm – problem, especially during winter when the environmental humidity is low and the skin is not getting enough moisture.

H Y D R AT E causes dry skin 1. Dehydration and chapped lips. Hydrating will provide the skin barrier enough water to keep the skin’s natural moisture. Drinking lots of water will flush out toxins and improve functioning of the whole body for healthier hair, skin and nails.

HUMIDIFIER on the heating inside 4. Turning the home can cause dry skin. Humidifiers can add moisture back to dry skin and chapped lips.

Extreme dry skin can lead to itchy and painful cracked skin, if not treated. Here are some tips to prevent dry skin and defeat Northern Nevada’s brisk winds and dry air:

MOISTURIZE oil, creams, 2. Ointments, lotions and moisturizers are different types of products that are available over the counter without a prescription. Ointments and oils are usually greasier compared to the others. Hot showers and harsh soaps can strip the skin’s oil barrier. Apply within minutes after taking a hot shower to seal in the moisture. Reapply throughout the day as needed. Avoid harmful chemicals from products such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Olefin Sulfonates, which are used in shampoos, cleansers, baby wipes and bubble baths. These are irritating ingredients and weaken the moisture barrier.

SUNSCREEN exposure is still 3. Ultraviolet present when the sun is out during winter. UV exposure can break down collagen and elastin causing dehydrated skin and chapped lips.

Sierra Regional Spine Institute Doctor Recognized as Local Leading Spine Surgeon ProPublica, an independent non-profit organization, recently named Phelps C. Kip, M.D., as the highest-rated spine surgeon in Northern Nevada. Dr. Kip – a member of Sierra Regional Spine Institute since 1993 – received prestigious recognition for having the lowest complication rate for lumbar spinal fusion and posterior column approach, which is the fusing of two or more vertebrae in the lower back, performed on the back portion of the spine. Dr. Kip’s complication rates were recorded and evaluated by Surgeon Scorecard, an online database that records doctors’ complication rates. ProPublica, a non-profit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest, operates Surgeon Scorecard. Surgeon Scorecard documents 5 years of Medicare records on lower-risk procedures such as knee and hip replacements, gallbladder removals and lumbar spinal fusions to generate each surgeon’s score. In order to be evaluated, surgeons were required to perform a certain number of procedures for statistical validity – trauma and emergency room patients were omitted from the calculations, and the age and health of the patient was taken into account. Of the six surgeons who qualified to be evaluated at Renown Regional Medical Center and Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, Dr. Kip received the lowest complication rate. The group of local professionals included both neurosurgeons and orthopedic spine surgeons.

The database acts as a powerful research tool, providing patients and community members with the opportunity to research various surgeons before undergoing an operation. We here at Sierra Regional Spine Institute congratulate Dr. Kip on his excellent record and performance – his complication rate was 10 percent lower than the runner up! The surgeons and doctors of Sierra Regional Spine Institute are among the most respected in their field. They have earned a reputation for providing an exceptional level of professional care. Dr. Kip and James Rappaport, M.D. – one of our other fellowship trained spinal surgeons – serve with a select group of doctors who volunteer their time to provide professional care to the U.S. Ski Team. They have worked with many U.S. Ski Team and Olympic athletes including three recent Olympic Gold Medal winners.

n the second article of this series (Healthy Beginnings Magazine, October issue) I described evil as a force that “corrodes and eats away at the human spirit,” that “delays or derails the natural unfolding of your deepest potential” and pursues “the destruction of goodness in all its forms such as love, creativity, consciousness, healing and maturation.” But accurately applying this definition to the events of your life is often easier said than done. Not only does evil have many disguises, but also our inherent egocentricity tends to cloud our judgment and perceptions.

By Andy Drymalski, EdD

If a decision or action is in line with the goals of our ego, we tend to call it good. But if it thwarts our will or poses an obstacle to our goals, we usually see it as bad. Rock and roll music was the “work of the devil” to many parents in the 50s and 60s, but the “stairway to heaven” to their exuberant children. Obviously, different people may view the same event differently, and sometimes we adopt opposing views of a particular event in our own life as well. For example, if a series of

lowering drugs, suggests an $8 cure for deadly blood clots and poor cardiovascular function and explains how to beat illness without antibiotics and vaccines. He suggests just one supplement for total prostate health and gives advice regarding how to conquer failing vision without surgery, how to avoid cancer and defy obesity and diabetes. He gives information on why your thyroid hormones are out of whack and how to fix them, and he provides information on the rare mineral that wards off depression. The author also provides the names of specific nutrients needed to prevent the illnesses listed above, and also provides you with the necessary combinations of

nutrients that work much more efficiently together, rather than just by themselves. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 90 percent of Americans are nutrient deficient, meaning that our bodies lack the essential nutrients required for proper metabolic and hormonal harmony. Our malnourishment comes from our overdependence on prescription drugs and the excess consumption of sugar, artificial flavors, preservatives, alcohol and fast food. But because of factory farming, our soils are becoming more depleted of the necessary nutrients. If the vitamins and minerals are not in the soil, they’re not in the spinach. Then there’s the deluge of toxic compounds that corrupt everyday products like soaps, shampoos, body creams and even nutritional supplements. We know that a lack of key nutrients, combined with an increase in toxins, can lead to cell function weakness and disease. Each cell in your body is working at a hundred thousand functions per second, and needs the purest nutrients possible in order to keep working. This book is easy to read and understand, and is dedicated to those who want to save money and live healthy rather than squander their finances and lives to Big Pharma. & Your Health

N PART ONE OF THIS THREE-PART SERIES, WE FOCUSED ON THE neck area. In this article, we will be focusing on the midback, or the thoracic spine. The thoracic spine is made up of 12 vertebrae, the rib cage and surrounding tissues, which help to protect your major internal organs such as your heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. The nerves exiting the thoracic spine area, referred to as T1-T12 nerves, are either sensory or motor in function. "Sensory nerves deliver information to your spinal cord from

muscles and joints about your body position. They also transmit sensations such as touch, pressure, pain and temperature, which are experienced on the surface of your skin," which associate with dermatomes. Dermatomes are areas on the body that relate to each particular spinal nerve. “Motor nerves (motor neurons) pass information received from your brain through your spinal tracts to your skeletal muscles to direct precise voluntary movements. T1-T12 power the muscles that lie between the ribs (intercostal muscles). These also help you breathe by drawing the rib cage outwards and upwards, pulling the lungs in the same direction. The lungs expand, helping them fill with air. The diaphragm and the intercostal muscles are your major breathing muscles. Your lower thoracic spinal nerves T6-T12 provide power to your abdominal muscles. These muscles help you cough and expel matter from your air passages. Abdominal muscles are also important in balance and posture. Your autonomic nervous system (ANS), which is part of the peripheral nervous system, consists of two divisions: Your parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves receive information from your brain down through your spinal cord. This information is then passed on to organs, glands and blood vessels."

The Healing

By Annie W. Brandt | Reviewed by Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

e were honored to have Annie Brandt address the Nevada Homeopathic and Integrative Medical Association (NHIMA) annual fall convention in Reno presenting her latest book, The Healing Platform – Build Your Own Cure. She is the founder of Best Answer for Cancer Foundation and the International Organization of Integrative Cancer Physicians (IOICP).

Hope and Healing Insights Annie’s Story Prior to her health issues, Brandt worked as a market research specialist for the Anheuser-Busch industrial products division and as a systems engineer for Digital Equipment Corporation, rising through the ranks to corporate information networking consultant. She became an entrepreneur in the field of indoor air/ water quality consulting, and has owned her own firm in that specialty since 1994. From 1997 to 2004, she was also co-owner of an award-winning “green” design/build company. In 1992 she was in a meeting in Boston with the vice president of Kodak and realized she couldn’t remember her thoughts, nor the man’s name or company. She felt panicky, feverish, achy, dizzy and nauseous. Her account manager knew something was wrong and covered for her. Afterward he suggested that she might have the flu, so she went back to the hotel and flew home the next day. However, her symptoms intensified with mind fog, headaches and extreme fatigue. After consulting with several doctors, she was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (CFIDS), also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). She was totally disabled and slept 22 hours per day. Doctors gave her no hope, and she got sicker from their medications. She lost her job, savings and her relationship. Who could live with

her after falling in love with a vibrant, successful, professional woman? She couldn’t collect disability because ME wasn’t recognized as a serious problem. She began her own research and realized that the majority of people with ME did not get over it and ended up with other autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, diabetes and cancer. Many people did not survive. It was at this time that she realized that she needed to figure things out for herself in order to be healed.

It’s MS In 1994 she had no equilibrium, she had double vision with numbness and vomiting, and she tested positive for multiple sclerosis. She had a second opinion at Duke University and confirmed the presence of both MS and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome (IDS). She was told that she had progressive-aggressive MS: in a wheelchair in 6 months and death in a few years. In 1995 she was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse and in 1997 with multiple chemical sensitivities.

It’s Cancer In 2001 she found a swollen lymph node under her arm during a shower. Biopsy showed ER+/PR+ breast cancer. More scans revealed lesions in the lungs and brain. Her diagnosis was end-stage metastatic breast cancer. She was given 3 months to live – no longer than 5 months. She was booked for a double mastectomy followed by chemotherapy and radiation. Conventional oncology standard of care included surgery, which

weakens the immune system and causes metastases, chemotherapy, kills the P53 tumor- suppressor gene, distorts the DNA of healthy cells, causes cancer to build immunity and promotes metastases. Radiation causes all of the above and promotes cancer. (Brandt opined that, “God is the only one who really knows when I am going to die, everyone else just has an opinion!” She went back to the books.)

Throughout this process she received help from many friends and doctors. One of her first inspirations was from The Cancer Personality: Its Importance in Healing, a book written by W. Douglas Brodie, MD. He felt that, after decades of treating cancer patients, there are certain personality traits that are rather consistently present in cancer-susceptible individuals. These include the following: 1.

Being highly conscientious, dutiful, responsible, caring, hardworking and usually of above average intelligence.

Exhibiting a strong tendency toward carrying other people’s burdens and toward taking on extra obligations, often “worrying for others.”

Having a deep-seated need to make others happy, tending to be “people pleasers.” Having a great need for approval.

Often having a history of lack of closeness with one or both parents, sometimes, later in life, resulting in lack of closeness with spouse or others who would normally be close.

Harboring long-suppressed toxic emotions, such as anger, resentment and /or hostility. Typically the cancer-susceptible individual internalizes such emotions and has great difficulty expressing them.

Reacting adversely to stress, often becoming unable to cope adequately with such stress. Usually experiencing an especially damaging event about 2 years before the onset of detectable cancer. The patient is unable to cope with this traumatic event or series of events, which comes as a “last straw” on top of years of suppressed reactions to stress.

Showing an inability to resolve deepseated emotional problems and conflicts, usually arising in childhood, often even being unaware of their presence. continued on page 16

Platform, continued from page 15 Whole-Being Approach: The Healing Platform Healing the entire person: spirituality, mind-body, psycho-motional, immunity, nourishment, detoxification, lifestyle and targeted cancer therapies.

Spirituality On at least two occasions Brandy heard the voice of God telling her “Do not worry. I love you and I will not let anything bad happen to you; you must have faith in Me.” The National Cancer Institute sponsored a multi-institutional cross-sectional study of 170 patients with advanced cancer. More use of positive religious coping methods was associated with better overall quality of life and higher scores on the existential and support domains of the McGill Quality of Life measurements. Tools to support the spirituality healing platforms include: prayer, attendance at religious services, healing touch, Order of St. Luke, prayer group and Reiki.

Mind Body – Psychoneuroimmunology Research pointing to a circuit linking the immune system and brain connects illness, stress, mood and thought in a whole new way. Toxic, buried emotions usually start in childhood and create patterns, which may persist throughout life. These include beliefs of unworthiness, being unlovable and displeasing. Persistent feeling of being trapped, “There is no escape.” Traumatic events 6 months to 2 years prior to diagnosis and unknown/unrecognized traumas can be triggered and resurface. Tools for removing negative emotions include recognizing that cancer impression is positive, not negative, using visualization, imagery, positive affirmations, self-hypnosis/meditation, faith and NuCalm. NuCalm entrains the brain to the alpha/theta EEG ranges, naturally creating homeostasis, neuromuscular release and relaxation.

Immunity Boost, strengthen and balance the immune system, which has huge power to influence cancer. Tools include clinical immunotherapies, immune supplements and herbs, acupuncture, liver cleanses, healthy gut, music, endorphins (exercise, knitting, handiwork), living touch and massage, unconditional love (pets), laughter nutrition, supplements and NuCalm.

Targeted Therapies of Choice

Nutrition plays a key role in cancer therapy. Tools include diet, microbiome (gut flora), supplementation, herbs and spices, enzymes and very importantly, switching up a diet – fool the cancer! Cancer cells are smart and need changes in approach to keep them off guard.

IPT/IPTLD (insulin potentiated therapy); high-dose IV vitamin C; cancer stem cells (CSCs) inhibition; oxidative therapies; thermal medicine; bicarbonate IV therapy; IV chelation; immunotherapies; RIGVIR; enzymatic therapies; colonic therapies; medical cannabis (United Patients Group); zolodex injections; aromatase inhibitors; Poly-MVA; Lugol’s Iodine; curcumin; metformin and berberine; Haelin 951; GcMAF; Salicinium; silver; Artemisinin/Artenuate; Iscador/mistletoe; Laetrile; 3-Bromopyruvate (3BP); Budwig Protocol; AveULTRA; ESSIAC Tea; red clover/ Stillingia; Hoxsey; Pau D’arco; modified citrus pectin; mushroom extracts; KAQUN water; selenium therapy; DMSO; functional integrative dentistry; psychoneuroimmunological medicine; amino acid supplementation; seeds; food.

Detox: Cancer Diagnosis = Toxic Overload According to chemical analysis of 10 cord blood samples from newborns, 287 toxins were identified, 180 of which cause cancer (AXYS Analytical Services). According to the CDC’s 2009 report of blood, serum and urine samples from 2,500 random participants, all Americans are recipients of widespread exposure to environmental chemicals. This ranges from BPA and lead, to acrylamides in fried food and gasoline additives. Environmental detox includes air; use air purifiers for all living/ working spaces. Water. Get water purifiers and filters for all household water. Don’t drink bottled water; fill BPA-free bottles with purified water. Electromagnetic frequencies. Find good EMF blockers, practice grounding. Physically follow a detox diet, exercise, liver, colon, kidney cleanses, colonics and enemas and chelation to remove heavy metals. Spiritually: get rid of suspicions, anger, resentment and bitterness against God. Psychologically, research has shown that psychotherapy may improve a patient’s quality of life. Change negative thinking. Improve self-belief system using Neural Emotional Therapy, counseling, self-help books, 12-step programs, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR).

Lifestyle “The day of diagnosis is the first day of the rest of your life. Literally.” How do I want to live? How do I want to die? Experts estimate that more than 4 in 10 cancer cases could be prevented by lifestyle changes. Important lifestyle changes include diet (no sugar, little/no starches and organic foods). Stop smoking, reduce alcohol consumption, exercise 30 minutes per day, eliminate negatives (people, situations), reduce stress (NuCalm), participate in fun activities and positive support groups, count your blessings and have an ‘Attitude of Gratitude.’ Get good, nourishing sleep every night – at least 7 hours – court positive relationships and build physical strength. Move your body, which will get blood flowing and move the lymph.

The Leading Edge of Integrative Oncology: Targeted Treatments for Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs) In 2006, the Chairman of the Department of Oncology at the University of Michigan School of Medicine Max Wicha, MD, wrote that standard cancer treatments can make things worse because when tumor cells die under assault from chemotherapy and radiation, they give off inflammatory messengers that can recruit CSCs. CSCs are responsible for recurrence of cancer, especially metastases-targeting cancer stem cell population is essential for improving outcomes. Targeted treatment for CSCs include Metformin, Berberine, natural botanicals, curcumin, fermented soy, fish oil and sulforaphane.

Conclusion Annie Brandt’s The Healing Platform – Build Your Own Cure is an inspirational book with patient interactive question pages. As a 14-year survivor of stage IV breast cancer and host of other health challenges, she speaks with experience and knowledge. Her compassionate life focus is to help others not only “survive, but thrive.” Her book is very well documented, informative and geared to the cancer patient. All cancer patients and their doctors would do well to begin their health journey with a copy of her book. The next Answers for Cancer Summit will be held on April 28 and 29 at the Town and Country Resort & Convention Center in San Diego. The doctor’s conference will be held from April 27 through 29.

of By Van Harding, L.Ac., Dipl. OM

Because scientific research is now available to offer proof that many natural remedies have profound effects, we have entered a new era for healing brains. Inclusive in this list are injuries (stroke, traumatic brain injury), disease (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis), developmental issues (Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Asperger’s) and/or emotional-psychiatric problems (fear, anxiety, depression, bi-polar, schizophrenia). Today, we understand that the brain is not a fixed structure that when damaged cannot be fixed; today we understand that the brain is plastic – it can change, grow new neurons, reestablish lost connection and even move functioning from one area to another to restore performance, which is known as neuroplasticity. To accomplish this healing and retraining, many natural therapies such as acupuncture, nutrition and computerized neuro-training are proving themselves as the remedies the brain needs. Patients no longer are limited to current conventional treatment with only drugs, surgery and the therapies of physical, occupational and speech/ language.

Healing the brain engages a complex web of biological and physiological processes that are interdependent – hence when one is not working it will negatively affect the others. What further complicates the web is the brain’s interdependence of different areas/ regions for proper function. The good news is that research has provided us with enough understanding of the interdependence, biological and physiological mechanisms that we can effectively apply natural therapies to facilitate the brain’s healing.1, 2 The web is comprised of the following nine realms that are each addressed to either recover or maximize function. Nine Realms of the Web and Healing Process 1.

Treating the whole body (general health)

Eliminate external interference and damage

Awaken the brain (brain activation)

Neuron timing

Brain region synchronization

Mind-body connection (emotions, visualization)

Affects Both Affect Each Other

Holistic care (psyche)

Integrative care (medications)

Treating the whole body is where the healing process begins because of the many bodily systems that support and impact brain function. Basic functions such as heart and blood vessels provide the circulation of building materials and waste removal, the lungs provide blood enriched with oxygen, digestion provides necessary nutrients, the liver, kidneys and intestines3 remove toxins and waste, which otherwise can damage tissues. Brain function is dependent upon stable and proper blood sugar4, good red blood cell production and proper thyroid/ metabolism and other hormones.5, 6 To properly remediate issues within the brain, it cannot include treatment of the brain alone; the entire organism must function at an optimum level to produce the greatest repair in the brain. Eliminating external interference and damage includes external pathogenic factors and prevention of excessive inflammation. Viral, bacterial, parasite, yeast and fungal infections can directly impact the brain and so too can the secondary inflammation7 caused by these bodily infections. It cannot be emphasized enough that all things that cause inflammation can interfere with neuron function, neuron connections to each other at the synaptic junction and/ or damage to neurons, blood vessels, meninges and cerebral spinal fluid production, reabsorption and circulation. Further, our modern food supply and environment are filled with altered proteins and chemicals responsible for the interference and subtle damage.8, 9, 10, 11, 12 More deeply concerning is that some foods are causing the production of antibodies that damage myelin sheath (a possible component of Multiple Sclerosis MS13), causing the tangles in Alzheimer’s14 and damage to mechanisms that allow neurons to communicate with each other and antibodies that damage the brain’s blood vessels resulting with inflammation of the brain.15

December 2016 • Healthy Beginnings

Once the whole body has been taken into the plan of action, the practitioner may turn directly to the rehabilitation of the brain itself with a variety of treatments. Awaken the brain includes therapies that stimulate neurons and/or specific areas of the brain such as acupuncture 16, 17, 18, 19, essential oils, flower essence, sound, light-color, laser, vision, vibration, magnetic pulse and more. Neurophysiology includes providing nutrients that are needed for neuron function and making neuron connections.20, 21 Neuron timing refers to firing efficiency – the more a neuron can fire (be active) at a given moment the better the signal flow is from one neuron to the next. Like a domino effect, the neurons fire in a sequence and if one is not firing the sequence is interrupted. Further, the brain needs to efficiently process information. So, just like your computer performs better with a ‘faster processor,’

the brain can improve its processing by how fast individual neurons can ‘fire’ and then ‘re-charge’ themselves with each activation. The faster they can ‘fire and re-charge’ the faster you can process information.22, 23 Brain region synchronization is necessary like neuron timing in that there is a sequence to the flow of information from one region/area of the brain to another and lack of being in-sync will cause dysfunction.24 Mind-body connection is instrumental to facilitating brain region synchronization because thoughts can place us in sympathetic mode (fight, flight, freeze) 25, 26 or in the parasympathetic mode (rest and digest) of which alters the sequencing of activated brain regions.

and therapist who are outside the conventional healthcare system. Holistic care plays a significant role because the patient’s life circumstances (financial, mobility) and relationships with family, friends, work will have a direct affect upon the patient’s state of mind – positive or negative. Bottom line, healing the brain is beyond writing a prescription, a patient taking their medication and completing six weeks of therapy covered by their insurance. Part two of this three-part series will discuss “Why Brains Do Not Heal,” and part three discusses “What You Can Do to Help Heal Your Brain.” For more information, call Van Harding at 530-536-5084 or visit For a list of Harding’s references, visit

o what does that mean? We have two minds, the conscious and subconscious. We think we’re running our lives with our conscious mind, but that isn’t completely true. Our subconscious (unconscious) mind takes care of our breathing and digestion as well as our heartbeat, blood circulation and many other bodily functions. As we grow up, it also becomes programmed regarding what’s safe to say and how to act in our particular family situation. In addition, it becomes conditioned regarding what to believe, as in religion, politics, cultural and social situations. The more often we hear the same opinions, the deeper they become “set” in our subconscious mind. If everyone in our family believes a certain way, and we accept those opinions, we usually find friends who believe the same way because it’s comfortable to be around people who hold the same opinions you do.

But if we go through life accepting only what we were taught, and listening only to the few sources of information which echo our opinions (which we inherited from someone else), we end up living out our parents’ ideas, which may have been valid and beneficial in their generation, but may not be so useful in ours. And it’s much easier to change our minds about our social habits (because we want to fit in) than it is to change our minds about our inherited religious and/or political beliefs. But it takes intellectual curiosity and personal courage to change our religious or political beliefs if we’ve been brought up in a strict religion or in a family that is deeply committed to the ideology of a certain political party. We have to have a

real reason to want to change, because it’s not always easy. The old programming keeps popping up, causing you to doubt whether you should change. You may have quietly rejected the family ideas as a child or teenager. Maybe they never really resonated with you. Maybe something within you sort of “knew” those ideas weren’t for you. That usually launches us on a quest – to find out what other people think and why they think that way… to find out what backstory there is regarding certain religions or political parties. It’s very important to bring your subconscious mind to the conversation – meaning, understand that you were programmed to believe what you believe. And remember instances when you were told certain things or when you heard your parents or friends make certain statements. Sometimes the realization that you were programmed is enough to free you up so that you can do some research and decide whether the old programming is valuable enough to keep or whether you should ditch it. People who get very emotional about their beliefs are usually very heavily programmed. They feel attacked if someone voices an opinion that is opposite from theirs. Rather than standing back mentally and emotionally, staying out of the emotional storm and quietly observing (thereby retaining all their own personal power) they become very defensive and feel they have to jump in and stand up for their (inherited) position. The art of discussion and debate, without getting angry and resorting to name-calling, is actually a lot of fun. That means one must know WHY they believe a certain way, or their side of the conversation is going to be very short and sound pretty uninformed and shallow. We were not born racist or sexist or xenophobic or homophobic. We were a clean slate at birth. We picked up certain opinions along the way and we can decide now why we believe that way and whether or not we want to continue those opinions and beliefs. We have total free will in this respect.

December 2016 • Healthy Beginnings

One of the first steps to ask yourself is: WHY do I believe what I believe? Where did I pick this up? Is it serving me now? Or is it just habit? Do I hang onto it because family won’t approve of me if I change my mind? I may have to gradually change my friends if I’m going to think for myself – make new friends with whom I can have intelligent conversations instead of just “preaching to the choir” conversations. If I’m going to be open-minded or change my mind, I must bring my whole mind to the conversation. Examine the reasons for my beliefs. Am I intellectually curious enough to do some research and read about other people’s journey along this same path? Or, am I too mentally lazy? There are millions of people who’ve decided to come into the present and stop living in the past, living out their programming, living “unconsciously” by letting their subconscious minds decide their opinions and run their lives. They’ve decided to stop being a “belief thief.” Concerned about what others may think? Ask yourself, “Are they paying my bills?” Probably not. So don’t give it another thought.

Look at the conflict in the world. If everyone really looked at their programming, including religious, political, social and cultural, and decided what was best for them, for their families and for the world, would they keep their old conditioning?

W (MCS) and Its Role in Chronic Pain: Part 1 By Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B.

e are exposed to unprecedented levels of environmental toxins, industrial chemical pollutants and heavy metals. There are over 80,000 untested compounds in our environment. Today, children are born with increasingly higher levels of toxic burdens (an average of 300 compounds per child). Pharmaceutical chemical intake is as shocking with half of the U.S. population taking multiple medications. In addition to sugar, the standard American diet is comprised of industrially processed foods, chemical additives, GMOs and hydrolyzed food. All are inflammatory. Hundreds of studies have explored the effects of these compounds on our life. But human physiology is complex and it is difficult to identify specific compounds that affect the average person. Unless there is an acute exposure, toxins do their work quietly and slowly over time. Why do some people remain healthy in the face of all these exposures while others fall victim to toxin-induced illness? If you were to randomly test people in the U.S., chances are that all of them will show contamination from heavy metals and environmental compounds. Being completely free of these substances today is impossible. In fact, anthropological studies show that even mummies were uniformly contaminated by heavy metals.

What we’re seeing regarding as to whom is affected or not affected is that some people have immune reactions to these environmental compounds – and others don’t. One person can test for high levels of toxicity and be symptom free while another tests for low levels of contamination yet reacts seriously. How can this be? It appears that the issue is not whether you have toxins or how many toxins are in your system, but whether or not your immune system reacts to them. Poor immunity is the mechanism behind chemical intolerance, multiple chemical sensitivities and the toxin-induced brain degeneration mechanisms that are becoming so common today. This loss of chemical tolerance due to immune dysfunction often results in a dizzying array of symptoms when that person is exposed to gas fumes, scented body products, laundry detergents, fabric softeners, new carpet smells, new car smells, etc. Some of the symptoms that are commonly associated with even trivial exposures for people with loss of chemical tolerances are asthma, migraines, fibromyalgia, fatigue, Gulf War Syndrome, brain fog, memory loss, incontinence, general neurological dysfunction, rashes and so on.

So what specifically causes immune response in chemo-sensitive patients?

Depletion of glutathione levels: Every day, levels of environmental compounds do not become immune triggers unless glutathione levels are depleted.

Breakdown in immune barriers: Leaky gut, leaky brain barriers and leaky lungs. (Diet and lifestyle factors can break these down increasing the risk for both loss of chemical tolerance and autoimmunity.)

Poor regulatory T-cell function: “T” stands for thymus. These white blood cells regulate the immune system and prevent autoimmunity and lack of chemical tolerance. Glutathione depletion causes regulatory T-cell dysfunction as to Vitamin D deficiency (below 30) and fatty acid deficiency (think fish oils).

Chronic inflammation: It’s common today. Stress, diets, etc. contribute to the loss of glutathione, loss of barrier integrity and loss of T-regulatory cells, and is a major predisposing factor in the loss of chemical tolerance.

December 2016 • Healthy Beginnings

So how do loss of chemical tolerance and multiple chemo-sensitivities occur? They appear to occur in two stages. The first stage is the breakdown of the body’s natural tolerance to chemicals and heavy metals (numbers 1 through 4). This is the person who experiences mild chemical sensitivities to chemicals, and that’s it. Maybe they have a mild allergic type of reaction, or even a mild skin rash to jewelry. No big deal. In the second stage, the same ordinary exposure to an environmental compound triggers an immune response whether it’s due to traffic exhaust, fragrances, a drug or other chemicals. An example would be the same person walking into an apartment heavily scented with chemical laundry products suddenly experiencing

dizziness, vertigo, fatigue or exacerbations of an already present case of multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or some other preexisting problem. The latter is an example of an immune response leading to profound breakdowns of immune function. In fact, many of these people go on to develop multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS), severe allergies, multiple food sensitivities and auto immunity, if they don’t already have it. Managing these cases can be difficult, as many of the very herbs and supplements used in these types of chronic cases trigger reactions. Prior to the exposures mentioned above, these folks likely already suffered from glutathione depletion, leaky immune barriers and other health intolerances

that predisposed them to developing loss of chemical tolerance and autoimmunity. It wasn’t the amount of toxins in their system that triggered them. Again, it was their loss of immune tolerance to chemicals.

what treatment protocols have proven to be consistently successful in our clinical experience.

When suffering from a leaky gut, chronic inflammation, hormonal imbalances, chronic stress and so on, we are just one major stress event away from falling apart. An IRS audit, a divorce, a lawsuit, a car accident, a surgery. Then what?

Feds fund groundbreaking $ 37 million chelation heart study By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D. The study, known as the Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy 2 (TACT2), will involve 1,200 patients and is being conducted with the Duke Clinical Research Institute and other leading medical institutions.

helation therapy is an IV therapy that has been recommended by the American Medical Association for almost 100 years for the removal of heavy metals from the body. It has also been used by alternative medical doctors for the removal of blockages in the heart and brain blood vessels, and has been dismissed by conventional heart doctors as “fringe medicine.” The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced that it is approving a grant of $37 million to conduct a follow-up study of promising preliminary research. This research suggests that chelation therapy may be as beneficial as the use of conventional medication and treatments – or more so – in preventing heart attacks.

“The results showed that those who received chelation plus vitamin supplements had a 26 percent lower risk of heart complications (such as a second heart attack, stroke or bypass surgery), compared to those given a placebo.” The lead researcher is Dr. Gervasio Lamas, chief cardiologist with the Columbia University Division of Cardiology at Mount Sanai Medical Center in Miami Beach.

If TACT2 is positive, it will forever change the way we treat heart attack patients and view toxic metals in the environment. Dr. Lamas has noted that, “chelation therapy cleanses the body of environmental pollutants that may be implicated in heart disease.” The research aims to examine the use of intravenous chelation treatments in combination with oral vitamins in diabetic patients with a history of a prior heart attack. The goal is to determine if chelation can prevent recurrent heart episodes such as heart attacks, stroke, death and others by removing toxins from the blood. Chelation has long been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to rid the body of toxic heavy metals by using a synthetic amino acid (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, or EDTA), which binds to toxic metals and minerals in the bloodstream, allowing them to be excreted in the urine. Some experts believe heavy metal contamination is linked to heart disease. Chelation rids the body of deposits that can lead to atherosclerosis, which causes coronary arteries to narrow, leading to heart attacks. Dr. Lamas, who once dismissed chelation as “quackery,” began looking into its

potential benefits 14 years ago. In 2002, he launched an NIH sponsored study involving more than 1,700 heart attack survivors at 134 research sites across the U.S. and Canada. Over a 7-year period, the participants were randomly assigned to receive 40 injections of a chelation solution or an inactive placebo. The results showed that those who received chelation plus vitamin supplements had a 26 percent lower risk of heart complications (such as a second heart attack, stroke or bypass surgery), compared to those given a placebo. He says, “if this study is positive, as the last one was, we will move to chelation of toxic metals as front-line therapy for heart disease!” Alternative practitioners have used chelation therapy for nearly 60 years in the absence of clinical trial data supporting its use. Because of the lack of such data, it has been believed by conventional medical practitioners and cardiologists to be without value. TO YOUR DIET By Gabrielle Irvin

mm, cinnamon. It’s delicious in our morning coffee and tea, and it’s a wonderful addition to any sweet baked good or savory dish. Aside from cinnamon’s distinct, pungent and slightly sweet flavor, there’s great reason to use cinnamon for more than pleasing your taste buds.

Cinnamon contains antiinflammatory compounds that help relieve pain and stiffness caused by arthritis. It is also known to enhance antioxidant defenses by warding off E. coli and other bacteria, prevent urinary tract infections and help control blood sugar.

Need more reasons to dash some cinnamon in your favorite foods? Cinnamon is also known to:

Calm inflammation. Cinnamon is an anti-inflammatory, in part due to its cinnamaldehyde content. The antioxidants in cinnamon help fight inflammation, which plays a role in the development of various diseases including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors and meningitis. Cinnamaldehyde may also fight various kinds of infection, as cinnamon oil has been shown to treat respiratory tract infections caused by fungi. “It can also inhibit the growth of certain bacteria, including Listeria and Salmonella,” according to an article published by Authority Nutrition. “The antimicrobial effects of cinnamon may also help prevent tooth decay and reduce bad breath.”

of manganese, a powerful antioxidant that is crucial for brain health.

Boost brain function. The scent of cinnamon boosts brain function – merely smelling cinnamon can improve memory and visual-motor speed. Cinnamon is a good source

Curb food cravings and promote weight loss. Cinnamon reduces blood glucose concentration and enhances insulin sensitivity. “In obese and healthy-weight individuals, cinnamon is also effective in moderating postprandial glucose response (or the amount of sugar in your blood after a meal),” according to an article published by Dr. Mercola, a well-known natural health expert. “By helping to regulate blood sugar spikes, cinnamon may have a favorable impact on hunger and weight gain.” Soothe a sore throat or cough. Cinnamon’s antibacterial properties can help relieve sore throats and fight infection. To soothe a sore throat or cough, soak cinnamon sticks in warm water and create cinnamon water with a water-soluble fiber called mucilage.

for Your Holiday Feast Don’t reach for the applesauce jar at the store – try this healthy, organic and simple recipe to wow your taste buds, and your dinner guests. • 6 organic apples peeled, cored & sliced (about 6 C) • ½ C organic apple juice • 1 TSP ground cinnamon (or, to taste) Put the apple slices and the apple juice in a saucepan with a lid. Cook, covered over low heat, until the apples are tender and most of the liquid is absorbed – about 10 to 20 minutes. Break up the apples using a fork or pour the mixture into a blender and blend until smooth. Sprinkle in the cinnamon and stir until it is thoroughly integrated into the apples. Let the apples cool for a few minutes or longer, depending on whether you want to serve them warm or cold. Platelet Rich Plasma

Hair Restoration By William Clearfield, DO

“ Give me a head with hair, long beautiful hair, shining, gleaming, streaming, flaxen, waxen. Give me down to there, hair, shoulder length or longer. Here baby, there, momma, everywhere, daddy, daddy. Hair, flow it, show it Long as God can grow it, my hair.1”

ho doesn’t admire a fine head of hair? We covet it, envy it and even worship it. My late mother, on the day before she passed, woke from her morphine-induced “sleep,” looked around at all of us sitting by her bedside, and asked, “How’s my hair?” Her final words – true story. To be fair, Mom was always a Jackie Kennedy, never an Onassis, wannabe. Millions of us aren’t so lucky. Hair loss is due to genetics, hormones, stresses and/or disease processes. No matter the cause, restoring a full head of hair is truly a “growth” industry.

Now, thanks to Platelet Rich Plasma technology, the same technology we use for the Vampire Facelift®, the Vampire Breastlift®, O-Shot®, P-Shot® and Joint Restoration®, we can, in combination with an FDA approved biomatrix that repairs and remodels damaged tissue, treat male and female pattern hair loss, alopecia areata and eyebrow hypotrichosis. The Hair Restoration Project is a 90-minute procedure, and recovery time is minimal (usually being managed with over-the-counter ibuprofen or homeopathic remedies such as Arnica Montana and/or Boswellia). New hair sprouts as early as 2 months. Hair thickens and becomes noticeable at 4-to-8 months.

Who Responds to The Hair Restoration Project? Each patient’s experience varies, but the most common conditions responsive to The Hair Restoration Project include: •

Male Pattern Hair Loss: Especially early stage or any time hair thins on the scalp. We need at least a little natural “peach fuzz” for kindling or we won’t be successful. • Female Pattern Hair Loss: All stages of hair loss. • Hypotrichosis (fine/thinned hairs) of the eyebrows and beard. • Alopecia Areata and Alopecia Totalis. • Metabolic Etiology of Hair Loss: Medication induced, thyroid induced, iron deficiency. Reviews in the scientific literature using our proprietary technique were uniformly positive. “A mean increase of 33.6 hairs in the target area and a mean increase in total hair density of 45.9 hairs per cm2 compared with baseline values. No side effects were noted during treatment. The data clearly highlight the positive effects of PRP injections on male pattern hair loss and absence of major side effects.3” “PRP was found to increase hair regrowth significantly and to decrease hair dystrophy and burning or itching sensation compared with TrA or placebo. Ki-67 levels, which served as markers for cell proliferation, were significantly higher with PRP. No side-effects were noted during treatment.4” Dr. Clearfield is one of a handful of select physicians trained, certified and licensed to administer these innovative

Ways to help our local Food Bank provide nutritious, healthy meals this season

FRESH FOOD FOR THE HOLIDAYS In Nevada, one in seven people is food insecure – lacking reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. The Food Bank of Northern Nevada works to provide these people with emergency food services through a network of more than 140 partner agencies in a 90,000 square mile service area throughout Northern Nevada and Eastern California. You may be familiar with our local Food Bank’s mission, and you’ve most likely noticed the various food drives throughout the community – at the grocery store, in your bank lobby or even near the front desk of your office. But, you may not be aware of the types of foods tossed into these seemingly abundant branded food drive barrels – nearly 30 percent of donated food generated by food drives is thrown away due to expired expiration dates and tampered packaging. “We work to spend time before a food drive to educate people about what we can take, and what we can’t,” Jocelyn Lantrip, director of marketing and communications for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, said. “When I get that question: ‘What should you donate to a food drive?’ I so often say, ‘What would you like to eat? If you had to pick nonperishable foods, what would you buy?’”

By Gabrielle Irvin

This holiday season, what are you placing on your dining room table? Fresh greens, colorful fruits and savory sides? Would you like to help a local family enjoy the same fresh, nutritious foods? If so, you can.

Mobile Harvest: Throughout the month, the Food Bank’s Mobile Harvest program visits neighborhoods across Northern Nevada and Eastern California to distribute produce and other fresh food items to those in need.

The Food Bank often battles a long-standing misconception that the organization only accepts and distributes non-perishable food items to those in need. However, nearly half of the distribution is produce.

Plant a Row: When planning your garden in the spring, consider dedicating a row, or even an entire bed, to your neighbors in need. As you harvest your garden, you can also donate any excess produce that may otherwise go to waste. Many of the Food Bank’s partner agencies accept donations of garden fresh produce.

“We really spend a lot of energy sourcing produce – it’s about half of what we distribute,” she said. Access to produce varies, but the organization works to provide a vast and abundant variety of fruits and vegetables including kale, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, onions, apples and more. However, it’s not always an easy task. “We work hard to get that variety,” Lantrip said. “The end result is that we want people to have healthier food.” The Food Bank works with various organizations and offers multiple programs to help provide fresh, nutritious food to community members. These programs include:

“If people are gardening and they have a zucchini plant that goes crazy, they tend to give it to their neighbors and their friends…” she said. “So, we organized it so that people can take that extra produce right to our agencies.” Nutrition Education Program: The program recognizes that knowledge is power, and works to educate adults and children about nutritious food choices, simple food preparation, safe food handling, getting the most nutrition with a limited food budget and increasing physical activity for healthy living. The program also includes Smart Shopper – a class for adults that focuses on making the most from their food budget – and Nutrition on Wheels, which offers nutrition tips and recipes.
