Dr. Charlotte Broaden 1. Tell us about yourself?

My professional career started in Milwaukee, WI when I graduated from Marquette University with a degree in Interpersonal Communication, with minors in Human Resources and Sociology. Part of the reason for the Interpersonal Communications was I thought about going to law school for corporate law. I ended up working for three multinational corporations with increasing responsibility. The last company I worked for had thirty-five locations around the world and I decided to take a position in Toronto, Canada, where I also had responsibilities for subsidiaries in France. At this point in my career, I was on the strategic management team making decisions for global operations.

I loved my time in the corporate world. I got to visit several international locations, create university partnerships, and help employees build the careers of their dreams. It was in my last assignment that I realized I wanted an international career, but for me, that entailed going back to school to fill in the gaps in my learning. I moved to New Hampshire and enrolled in New Hampshire College, majoring in International Business. While I was not thinking about a career in education, my work with building partnerships with a variety of colleges and universities, including Historically Black Colleges, would play a prominent role in my future career choices.

2. What / Who inspires the most?

While neither of my parents went to college, my father’s dad was one of the first thirteen blacks to be enrolled at Harvard University. While he did not graduate from there, I know how important it was for him to have his grandkids go to college. I wish he had lived long enough to see the accomplishments that my brothers and I made in this area. Education was extremely important to my parents, and they sacrificed a lot for us kids to have the opportunities that we enjoy today. On another note, I had some very inspiring professors at Marquette. In my senior year, I got to work on a research paper with one of my major professors, and the paper got published. I think this has been the inspiration for me to help eighteen undergraduate students here at SNHU become published authors!

Dr. Charlotte Broaden 3. Why did I choose SNHU? When searching for master’s programs in International Business, there were not a lot of choices. The core program here at New Hampshire College (now SNHU), provided the curriculum that would meet the needs of getting a solid background in international business to be successful in the corporate world. However, those plans got derailed when SNHU started a doctoral program In International Business, and eventually I was sold on the idea of participating in the program. The specialty field of finance was appealing as I saw the benefits of this discipline from my corporate experience and the knowledge of Foreign Direct Investment unlocked some of the keys to why the companies, I worked for were successful. My hesitancy in furthering my education was predicated on losing the opportunity to travel the world. Little did I know it actually expanded while here. I got the opportunity to teach abroad for SNHU in Athens, Greece, and Dubai, UAE, take students on faculty-led trips to Ireland and Denmark, and the ultimate experience was being named a Fulbright Scholar and getting a chance to spend a year in Botswana! These factors not only impacted my life, but I am hopeful they inspired some of our students to consider an international career.

4. What has been your favorite class to teach?

This is a hard question to narrow down to one. One of my favorite classes on the doctoral level is Foreign Direct Investment. The constant challenges of being in the global market excite me. Expanding my knowledge and the knowledge of students means opening a new part of the world to them. On the undergraduate levels, I have two favorites: Trade Finance and Import/Exporting. I am thrilled about creating experiential learning opportunities for students to get real-world experience. I have incorporated this type of learning into most of my classes. I have my students work with business professionals to solve real issues facing their organizations. I love seeing the look on their faces when they are successful. And when I can combine this with students authoring original research and getting it published, there is no better feeling for me of them of what they can accomplish.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS (PHD) LOW RESIDENCY The Ph.D. in International Business trains highly qualified individuals for careers in academics, consulting , and multinational corporations. Such positions require a theoretical understanding of global business operations and a keen interest in applied research. SNHU offers a low-residency hybrid of online and campus-based experiences, designed for working business professionals who wish to earn their PhD in as few as 4 years. The program includes courses like Foreign Direct Investment, Theories of Globalization, Privatization, Economic Reform and Globalization in Emerging Markets, among others.

Investment Analyst The Investment Analyst is a member of the team responsible for managing the Foundation’s approximately $1 billion in assets. The team is led by the Foundation’s CIO/CFO, includes staff from the Finance and Community Engagement and Impact departments.

The Foundation manages over 50 investment portfolios spanning the spectrum from sustainable and impact-oriented investments to traditional investments.

WEBSTER V I B E S Balancing Work and Leisure: GAB's Hiking Expedition on October 14th, 2023

The Graduate Advising Board (GAB), along with students and faculty from the School of Business, embarked on a hiking adventure to the loop trail near Rummey, NH. This scenic trail commenced by a relaxing stream and ascended steeply towards the summit of Rattlesnake Mountain.

The pinnacle of the journey awaited them at the mountain's summit, offering breathtaking views of the green valley and its perfect natural greenery. The team, which was made up of Christina Velez, Mary Giles, Michele Carrier, Dakotah Stiles, Dr. Lui Bo, and other students from the School of Business, expressed their delight in taking a well-deserved break from their demanding academic commitments to reconnect with the wonders of the natural world.

Prior to the expedition, GAB representatives visited classrooms to extend their best wishes to students and ensure they were adequately equipped for their upcoming midterm exams.

Undergraduate Advising will be holding multiple registration events between now and registration week. Students are able to walk in, meet with an advisor, and, per program sequencing, put together their schedules in preparation for their registration periods.

Graduate Advising will also be holding registration support events in the coming weeks and will be in the Dining Center Banquet Hall Nov. 13-15 to assist with students seeking registration guidance.
