Meet tHE Faculty

Prof. Jeremy Glines Hi, my name is Jeremy Glines. I am a faculty member in the School of Business. I teach accounting and taxation. I have been teaching at the university for about 8 years now. I came out of industry working most recently as a controller of a distribution company.

Why I chose SNHU

Why I became interested in my field

I chose to work at SNHU because this is where I completed my graduate work. I love living and working in Southern New Hampshire, the local community is vibrant and second to none. Bringing my experience into the classroom seems to benefit my students and is personally very rewarding. I enjoy introducing accounting to students and showing the benefit it has to business and industry. I have been at the University for 8 years starting as an adjunct, and now a full-time faculty member.

I love accounting because we help provide the framework for decision making. We allow internal and external stakeholders optics into a business. Our work directly influences the success of an organization and watching daily operations manifest into reporting and the financial statements has always fascinated me. Seeing the positive impact of decisions making based on data, that I helped analyze, was professionally very rewarding. I was fortunate to have high level C-Suite exposure early in my career, watching those high-level executives use accounting daily affirmed how important the work is.

Advice for students Advice that I can give to students is to own their experience. As a student you are given an opportunity to study at the highest levels with world class professional faculty and staff. Don’t waste that opportunity, try to engage all the resources that surround you.

Your experience here can springboard you into a successful career. For that to happen you need to be present and grab the opportunities that are available to you!

Fun fact I love Scuba diving! Growing up in New Hampshire provides limited access to the sport, but as an undergraduate I was able to take a class in diving and feel in love with it. I have been able to go diving around the world but will never forget the dives we completed at Nubble lighthouse in the middle of March!

Understanding Fuel Prices in the Economy After an executive order to ban Russian oil, which constitutes around 3% of fuel imports for the U.S accordign to the Wall Street Journal. This ban and the war in Ukraine have caused a major rise in gasoline prices, partially, a consequence of political choices. But the truth is who controls and sets how much consumers pay for their gasoline?

Gasoline is made from crude oil and other liquids. The cost of acquiring and refining the crude oil constitutes around 64% of its price, after this, distribution and marketing costs are added, and state and federal taxes. See figure below:

The final price can also vary depending upon production capacity, macroeconomic uncertainty, and supply and demand. For instance, if the international demand for oil rises faster than companies can produce and refine it, the prices will go up. In addition, in 2021 the U.S. reduced its oil production by 26% compared to 2020 in efforts to preserve local lands. Besides this, fuel is used for high demand activities like driving, heating, cooking, etc; which can create quick speculation in society. All these factors show why fuel remains as one of the most complex industries in our economy and why its prices can quickly change.

The Wolak Learning Center is seeking a Graduate Assistant for business tutoring on the Manchester Campus with a strong background in Business/Finance and statistics. The graduate assistant will work alongside the Tutoring Coordinators and the tutoring team to provide academic support to University College students.

The Wolak Learning Center is seeking business peer educators that can assist in Accounting, Finance, QSO, or Economics for on-campus students.
