Welcome to the summer edition of SPARKS Magazine. We hope you’re having a great year so far, and enjoying the beginning of your career in the everevolving world of electrics.

Since January we’ve been travelling around the country for the regional heats of the SPARKS Learner of the Year competition. Our team has been blown away by the exceptional work we’ve seen. In April, Schneider Electric hosted the two-day Grand Final at their Innovation Hub in Coventry. Our six finalists competed in a close run contest to win the prestigious title, SPARKS Learner of the Year 2022. The event was an awesome display of talent and the SPARKS team felt very proud to be a part of it. You can read all about the competition and meet the winner and runner up on pages 3-7. Will it be you taking part next year?

MEET THE RUNNER UP SPARKS: How did it feel to hear your name being announced?

Thomas Adlam: After doing two days of the competition and then at the end of it hearing your name being announced - it’s such a shock.

SPARKS: What was your favourite part of the competition?

TA: I think the best part was finishing up with a bit of time to spare and knowing it was all completed.

SPARKS: What stood out as being particularly difficult or challenging?

TA: Reading the specifications and making sure I’d gone exactly by the spec.

SPARKS: Is this the first skills competition you've entered?

TA: I entered the last SPARKS competition. I was a regional runner up then. I entered it again and was lucky enough to win the region, and then lucky enough now to become national runner up this year.

SPARKS: Why did you decide to enter the SPARKS Learner of the Year 2022 Competition?

TA: It just feels as if there's loads of opportunities coming from it.

Everyone seems to be talking about SPARKS wherever you go.

SPARKS: You won some amazing prizes. Do you have any idea what you're going to do with them?

TA: The prizes were amazing. I got a cheque for £500, I got a drill... for runner up you really can't quibble with that!

SPARKS: How did you celebrate being announced the runner up for the SPARKS Learner of the Year for 2022?

TA: I had a chilled weekend and then did my AM2!

On 28th April, after six close-run regional finals and some incredible demonstrations of electrical ability at the grand final, Benjamin Fox from Exeter College was announced as our SPARKS Learner of the Year 2022.

We caught up with him to ask what winning the competition meant to him.

MEET THE WINNER SPARKS: How did it feel to hear your name being announced?

SPARKS: Was there anything about the test that you perhaps struggled with?

Benjamin Fox: Surreal! The level of competition was so high, everyone's work looked the same and it came down to millimetres.

BF: I don't do a lot of conduit so it was just take it as it is and take it a bit slower.

SPARKS: How did you feel at this year's final?

BF: I was nervous because I didn't know what to expect. Once I got there and read the spec I relaxed, because I knew what I was up against.

SPARKS: You've won an amazing selection of prizes!

BF: It's amazing but even if I came away with nothing, it's the title that's incredible to have really. The fact that it's nationwide, it's such a pleasure to have that title.

SPARKS: How did you get your apprenticeship?

BF: I started helping my dad (who is a carpenter), then spent a few days with my current boss. I had a few weeks work experience then he took me on.

SPARKS: You've never entered a skill based competition. Why did you enter this year?

BF: After seeing the magazines at college, I thought I’d give it a go. It's good experience and practice for your AM2S as well. Just the experience of being under pressure, time, and having that install and wiring - it's a good set up.

SPARKS: What advice would you give to students entering next year?

BF: You will be nervous, but it is 100% worth a shot. Even if you come away just as a participant it's an experience that you learn so much from.

SPARKS: What have you learned from this experience?

BF: Having to work within a timescale, knowing what you've got to do and what you've got left – that was the main thing for me.

SPARKS: How did you celebrate winning the SPARKS Learner of the Year for 2022?

BF: I might have had a few beers!

This is definitely a marmite tool - you either love it or hate it! I find that it makes light work of stripping tails. I also use it on flex and coax. I have the flat cable version too which is great for scoring 6mm/10mm in tight spaces.

This is such a useful bit of kit. Whether you are working in a loft, under a floor or in a kitchen cupboard, using a head torch is the best way to see clearly whilst keeping both hands free to work.

A really important piece of PPE that I use nearly every day. I love these Velocity ones, they look good, are affordable and come in this case to stop them getting damaged in your bag. You only get one pair of eyes, look after them!

We all know our job would be so much harder without power tools. The multi tool is that tool that once you buy it you don’t know how you ever survived without it! With a variety of blades available it comes in useful for cutting floorboards, plasterboard and nails/screws.

I love the Pica pencil as you can use it to mark deep holes that a normal pencil wouldn’t reach. It is refillable and has a sharpener in the end of the cover. The Marxman is perfect for marking holes on surfaces where you wouldn’t easily see a pencil mark. Both fairly cheap but very useful.

SPARKY SPOTLIGHT JOE AND MATT

Q

SPARKS MAGAZINE: Why did you both decide on the electrical trade?

Joe: I was working as an estate agent. I bought my first house and really enjoyed doing the renovation work, so I decided to retrain in the trade.

Matt: My dad was a project developer so I’ve grown up on building sites. I remember watching the electrician on site and knowing that’s what I wanted to do.

Q

SPARKS: How did you go about finding an apprenticeship?

Joe: I actually paid for my apprenticeship at Kendal College as I had been to university already.

Matt: After deciding that I wanted to do an electrical apprenticeship, I discovered the trade community on Instagram. I saw JE Electrical on there and realised that he was based near me. I messaged him, asked for a day or two of work experience and he agreed. Eventually I asked Joe if he was able to take me on as an apprentice and he said yes!

SPARKS: What’s the worst part of your trade?

Joe: DIYers who have had a go… and cleaning up!

Matt: Going into a loft in the summer when it’s hot.

Q

SPARKS: What’s your advice for getting the most out of an apprenticeship?

Joe: Ask questions all the time, be keen to learn. If you don’t understand, just ask.

JE ELECTRICAL

Joe Eaton retrained as an apprentice aged 23, starting his own business at 27. Four years ago, Matt Barker contacted Joe on IG to ask about work experience places and has since become Joe’s apprentice.

We had a chat with them about being a sparky.

Matt: Listen carefully and don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions!

Q

SPARKS: Which bit of new technology are you most interested in?

Joe: Solar/battery installation. I have just done the course so I can fit them.

Matt: Smart home systems such as ring cameras, nest/hive heating systems and LED feature lighting.

Q

SPARKS: What tools could you not live without?

Joe: VDE Pliers and Milwaukee Packout.

Matt: Milwaukee m18 impact driver and Knipex 1000v combination pliers.

Q

SPARKS: Who has been the biggest influence on your career and why?

Joe: Myself. I want to grow the business, to be well established and well known.

The more effort I put in the more I get out.

Matt: Before starting my apprenticeship, I watched a lot of electricians on YouTube like Tom Nagy and Artisan Electrics.

Watching their videos inspired me.

Q

SPARKS: How does social media impact your business and learning?

Joe: You get to see lots of other people’s work and get ideas.

Matt: The massive trade community on Instagram is amazing. I’ve learnt loads of new tips and tricks from other electricians.

WHAT I’VE LEARNED: JOE:

■ It’s never too late to change your career. It might be a back step for a couple of years but in the long run it’s totally worth it!

■ If you’re interested, keen and willing to work hard you’ll succeed.

■ Use social media to get in contact with electricians as a way of getting an apprenticeship.

MATT:

■ Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for work experience you don’t ask you don’t get and the worst that can happen is they say no.

■ If you make a mistake, take it as a learning curve.

■ Give solutions, not problems – learnt that one from the boss man!

COMPLIANCE MADE EASY Protection Against Fire Caused by Electrical Equipment

AFDDs are now mandatory for socket circuits in certain types of buildings and are recommended for socket circuits in all other types of building.

See Regulation 421.1.7

Overvoltage protection devices (SPDs) are now required in all installations, however, in some cases the owner can opt out and accept all risks from such overvoltages.

See Regulation 443.4.1 Protection Against Transient Overvoltages

Testing of RCDs has been revised and now only requires test at IΔn i.e. residual rated operating current.

BS 7671 Amendment 2 Headlines for AFDDs, SPDs and RCBOs from electrium Prosumers Chapter 82

The technical content of Section 712 is significantly revised and expanded and now applies to a variety of PV connection configurations including those connected to a system for distribution of electricity to the public and those that are not.

A new chapter has been introduced (Chapter 82) for Prosumers Electrical Installations, those who have a source that produces electricity but may also store electricity & consume electricity from other sources.

Unwanted Tripping

AC Type RCDs should only be used to serve fixed equipment that does not contain any DC components e.g., simple electric heating or filament lighting without electronic components.

See Regulation 531.3.3 Where additional protection (30mA device) is required, designers should consider the use of RCBOs in conjunction with the requirements of Chapters 53 & 31 i.e., to avoid hazards & dangers from unwanted tripping of healthy circuits.

Selections of RCDs

Identification & Notices

Appendix 6 has been revised and updated, it now includes guidance and requirements for installations with AFDDs and SPDs. The label which relates to installations with mixed wiring colours has been removed from the requirements, and other notices and labels may not be required for domestic household premises provide there has been adequate client instruction.

However, a new requirement for “SPD present” label has been added.

NEW REGS IN SCOTLAND From 1 February 2022, every home in Scotland must now have interlinked heat and smoke alarms, and a carbon monoxide alarm where necessary. We spoke to SELECT about what that means for installers.

To ensure there is an effective warning system, all the heat and smoke alarms must now be interlinked and be either mains-powered with battery back-up or battery powered by a tamper-proof longlife battery.

The new rules (aka The Tolerable Standard) mean that a smoke alarm is required on every storey including hallways and landings and in the most frequented parts of the house, e.g. the lounge, a heat alarm in the kitchen and a CO alarm wherever there is a fuel burning appliance or flue.

by OnePoll in November 2021, sample size 200 UK electricians.

WIRED FOR THE JOB AHEAD Draper Tools surveyed the nation’s electricians to find out what they wish they knew when they started out – plus all their highs and lows.

D

raper’s research, commissioned to mark the launch of the new XP1000 VDE range, revealed Britain’s electricians experience high levels of job satisfaction.

More than 80% feel satisfied with their careers. Over half of those polled felt it was a rewarding career.

More than a third have never regretted their decision to train as an electrician.

But there are a few things they wish they’d known as an apprentice…

■ A third of electricians wish they knew that ‘paying attention to detail’ was one of the most important skills when they started out ■ 30% of the electricians in the Draper study would tell their younger selves that ‘it takes time, but hard work eventually pays off’ ■ More than a quarter wish they’d known how important people skills would be ■ A quarter also said they’d liked to have known more about running their own business ■ A tool-loving one in six would warn their younger selves just how addictive buying new tools can be!

AM2S CHECKLIST | SPARKS

CHECK OUT THE CHECKLIST Before you take the AM2S assessment at the end of your apprenticeship you’ll need to sign the AM2S checklist – but what is this document and why is it important?

T

he AM2S ‘Readiness for Assessment’ checklist maps out exactly the range of activities, skills and knowledge that you’ll be assessed on. Each section of the assessment is clearly broken down, so you need to ask yourself how much knowledge and experience you have in each area.

WHAT FIRST?

Before you’re allowed to book your AM2S, the checklist must be signed by you, your employer and tutor to confirm you’re ready and are confident in all areas within the document.

DON’T BE PRESSURED INTO SIGNING!

The power is in your hands – this is not just a box ticking exercise. If you are asked to ‘just sign this’ make sure you take a closer look. You need to review each section in detail and be honest: are you sure that you complete these tasks to a high standard? Do you have any additional training needs that need to be addressed?

If you sign without being fully ready, you could be setting yourself up to fail.

TIMING IS KEY

The checklist should only be completed as you’re nearing the end of your apprenticeship and not months in advance, to ensure you are close to finishing your training programme and have gained the skills you need for the assessment.

If you’re not feeling confident about what you’re being asked to do, speak to your training provider and employer and ask them to help you work on any gaps.
