A WELCOME

s the academic year wraps up, we’ve pulled together a mix of content to support you through the final stretch and beyond. Inside, you’ll find practical advice, useful tips and a few lighter features too, including our Epic Fail at the back, with some genuine learning moments and a few reminders of why attention to detail really counts.

It’s also a big edition for us, as we reveal the winners of this year’s SPARKS Learner of the Year and SPARKS Female Skills competitions. After travelling across the UK and seeing the quality of work on display first-hand, we’re excited to share the results. The standard this year has been incredibly high, with learners showing real focus, determination and pride in what they do.

If you’ve been thinking about entering, take that as your sign to get involved. Competitions are a great way to challenge yourself, build confidence and stand out.

A big thank you to the manufacturers who continue to support these competitions and help create opportunities for the next generation in the electrical industry.

Enjoy your summer break!

READY FOR YOUR AM2? GET STARTED HERE

Are you close to completing your apprenticeship and due to take your AM2? Here’s a quick guide to what happens at each step of the process.

THE CHECKLIST

First, NET needs to check you’re eligible for the assessment. You’ll need to sign the ‘Readiness for Assessment Checklist’ with your employer and training provider. You should only sign this if you’re completely confident you have the skills and knowledge required. It’s an important document, so you shouldn’t feel under any pressure to sign it.

■ ASSESSMENT BOOKING

Once NET approves you for the assessment, your AM2 can be booked. There will be at least 10 working days between making the booking and sitting your assessment, giving you time to prepare and feel ready.

■ PREPARATION

While you’re waiting for your assessment, you should do everything you can to prepare. For all the resources you'll need, visit:

www.netservices.org.uk/get-ready

■

ON THE DAY

When you arrive at the assessment centre, you’ll have an induction before you start. During the assessment, your assessor will use objective criteria to determine whether you have met the required standard for each task.

■ RESULTS

You’ll receive your result five days after the assessor has submitted your marks and NET has completed moderation.

■ CERTIFICATION

Once you’ve passed, you can register for your AM2 e-certificate, which you can view securely online and share with employers. You can also order a free printed copy if needed.

■ FEEDBACK

If you’re unsuccessful, you’ll be given general feedback on where you didn’t meet the criteria. This will help you understand where further training or improvement may be needed before you

If you’re an apprentice in England, NET will also apply for your Apprenticeship Completion Certificate, issued by the Department for Education.

ON TOP OF YOUR GAME

At the end of your apprenticeship you’ll need to complete the AM2S or AM2D Assessment before you can become fully qualified.

If you’re on the Installation Electrician apprenticeship you’ll be doing the AM2S, if you’re a Domestic Electrician apprentice, you’ll be doing the AM2D.

WHAT IS THIS?

It’s an in-depth assessment where you have to carry out specific tasks to show what you have learned during your apprenticeship.

BE PREPARED!

The AM2S and AM2D Checklists help you to look exactly what you need to do and make sure you’ve gained the right knowledge and practical experience.  This assessment is the pinnacle of everything you’ve learnt during your apprenticeship. So why not be proud of your skills and training and make it your mission to pass first time?

Female Skills

THE FINAL I

THE FUTURE POWER!

Now in its fourth year, the SPARKS Female Skills Competition gives female apprentice and student electricians the platform to showcase their skills, gain confidence, and kick-start their careers.

■ THE JOURNEY (FEB-MAR)

■ MEET OUR JUDGE

Darren Oates - National Electrotechnical Training (NET).

“ A BRILLIANT SHOWCASE OF ELECTRICAL TALENT AND POTENTIAL”

The search for the UK’s top female electrical talent kicked off in February, with female learners from across the country competing in three regional heats, designed and judged by Darren Oates from our judging partner, NET. The quality was seriously high this year, with six exceptional finalists making it through to the final. Each demonstrating incredible skill, understanding, and technical ability.

■ THE FINAL (APR)

The six finalists went head-to-head in a live practical test on Tuesday 21st April, at Stephenson College, in Coalville. Poppy Lott from Bridgwater College took the title, with Brienny Allard from Choice Training impressing the judges to secure the Runner-Up spot in a fiercely competitive final.

“We’re thrilled to be the headline sponsor of the SPARKS Female Skills Competition 2026. As long-time supporters of the SPARKS competitions, it’s fantastic to see the continued growth of skills and confidence among the next generation entering the industry.” Mark Stuart - Electric Center

BUILT FOR LEARNERS. READY FOR INDUSTRY.

If you’re training to become an electrician, you need equipment that’s easy to handle, simple to understand, and safe to use.

■ DESIGNED FOR REAL WORKSPACES

The new PowerPact 4 ComPacT NSXm Powerboard has been designed with exactly those needs in mind. Its slim, wall-mounted design makes it lighter and easier to install, especially in the tight spaces commonly found in today’s industrial and commercial environments. With an innovative fishbone structure and top and bottom cable entry points, you can route cables neatly and confidently – a key skill for anyone starting out.

STARTING OUT STRONG

Whether you’re about to start your first electrical job, still looking for an apprenticeship, or returning to college in the autumn – this guide is here to help you feel confident and prepared for life on site.

THESE ARE THE KEY QUALITIES THAT MAKE A STRONG IMPRESSION ON EMPLOYERS:

■ A Willing Attitude – Enthusiasm and a genuine interest in electrical work go a long way.

■ Reliability – Turn up consistently, be punctual (aim to arrive 10–15 minutes early), and show you can be counted on.

■ Respect & Communication – Be polite, friendly, ask questions, and listen well. It shows maturity and professionalism.

■ Effort on Your Course – Employers often ask colleges for references. Your attendance, focus, and attitude matter.

■ Presentation – Make sure you look tidy, wear the correct PPE, and bring any kit or tools you’ve been asked to.

■ Openness to Learning – You’re not expected to know everything – but being open, alert, and ready to learn makes a big impression.

WHAT PUTS EMPLOYERS OFF?

■ Poor punctuality, messy CVs, overconfidence, or a ‘know-it-all’ vibe can be dealbreakers.

Once you do get on site – whether it’s a work placement or your first proper job – those early impressions matter.

TOP MISTAKES TO AVOID:

■ Turning up late or cutting it fine

■ Standing around waiting instead of asking what’s next

■ Acting like you already know everything

■ Ignoring health and safety guidance

■ Being glued to your phone

Small habits make a big difference to how you’re seen.

“YOU ONLY GET ONE CHANCE TO MAKE A FIRST IMPRESSION – MAKE IT COUNT”

SKILLS INACTION

MAKING PROGRESS

Landing an apprenticeship is just the beginning. If you want to keep moving forward, earn trust, and develop into a great electrician, every day on site is an investment in your future.

THESE TIPS WILL HELP YOU BUILD MOMENTUM:

■ Be Curious – Don’t just do what you’re told. Ask why something is done that way.

■ Watch Closely – If you’re not hands-on, observe carefully. Noticing how things are done helps you learn fast.

■ Keep a Log – Use a notebook or notes app to track what you’ve done and learned. Handy when it’s time to update your CV or portfolio.

■ Ask for Feedback – Don’t be afraid to ask how you’re doing or what to improve. It shows maturity and a desire to grow.

■ Set Small Goals – Whether it’s learning a new skill or handling a task solo, progress happens one step at a time.

“THE WAY YOU DO THE SMALL JOBS TELLS US HOW YOU’LL HANDLE THE BIG ONES”
“STAY CURIOUS, OBSERVE, LEARN, AND GROW ONE SMALL STEP AT A TIME”

TOP TIP

Treat every task seriously, no matter how minor. That’s how you build a reputation people rely on.

SELF-CARE & YOUR RIGHTS

Knowing how to carry yourself on site, looking after yourself, and understanding your rights will make your experience more positive, professional and sustainable.

HERE’S HOW TO GET ALONG WITH YOUR TEAM, STAY SAFE, AND TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR PROGRESS:

■ Mobile Use – Keep your phone on silent and out of sight unless needed for work.

■ Stay Busy – If you finish a task, ask what else you can do.

■ Respect the Chain of Command –Know who’s supervising you and follow their lead.

■ Own Your Mistakes – Everyone slips up. Owning it shows maturity and professionalism.

■ Support Each Other – Every tradesperson started as a learner. Don’t try to outdo others or put anyone down – it drains team morale. A good crew lifts each other up.

■ Stay Hydrated & Fuelled – Bring a bottle of water and a packed lunch. Physical work needs energy.

■ Ask for Help – Struggling with something? Let your tutor or manager know sooner rather than later.

■ Take Pride – Every skill you learn builds your future career. Turn up with purpose.

YOUR RIGHTS AS AN APPRENTICE:

■ A Written Agreement – You should receive a contract or written terms of your employment or training.

■ National Minimum Wage – You're entitled to the current apprentice rate. Once you turn 19 and have completed your first year, you move to the minimum wage rate for your age.

■ Paid Holidays – At least 28 days paid leave a year, which may include bank holidays.

■ A Safe Working Environment – You must be given proper PPE and training.

■ Support & Mentorship – You should have someone to go to if you’re unsure or struggling.

“YOU’RE NOT EXPECTED TO KNOW EVERYTHING – JUST SHOW THAT YOU WANT TO LEARN”

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

■ Show Up Prepared – On time, dressed appropriately, ready to learn.

■ Be Respectful – Of your colleagues, tutor/ supervisor, and the workspace.

■ Stick With It – Even when it’s hard, showing resilience and reliability makes you stand out.
