NOVACON
GET CONDENSATE RIGHT FIRST TIME
Kane Waites, business development representative at Wilo UK, explains three simple steps to safe, compliant condensate management.
■ A HIDDEN HAZARD Condensate drainage isn’t always top of the list when you’re fitting a boiler. These appliances produce acidic condensate that has to be removed safely, and getting it wrong can lead to corrosion, leaks and call-backs. Effective condensate management: ■ Protects the system and the
building materials around it
■ Supports long-term reliability ■ Meets installation standards
■ PREPARED FOR THE UNEXPECTED Reliable condensate removal needs overflow protection and backflow prevention, safeguarding both the unit and the wider system. Look for solutions with float switches and non-return valves to keep everything running dependably.
■ KEEP IT SIMPLE Condensate solutions should be straightforward to fit. In most installations you’re specifying a pump because there’s no access to the main drainage or a suitable external wall for gravity discharge, so flexibility matters.
■ MEET NOVACON
We’ve launched NovaCON, a compact system that safely discharges condensate from condensing boilers. It has overflow and backflow protection, the option to connect to a pressure relief valve, and works with models up to 50kW. It can be fitted on the floor or mounted on a wall, and there’s a volt-free connection for alarm systems. Condensate management doesn’t have to be complicated. Prioritise protection, installation flexibility and purpose-built solutions, and you’re onto a winner.

GET THE BASICS RIGHT
SHOOT GREAT PHOTOS
Think of your profile as your digital CV. If an employer found you today, would they know what you do?
Great work deserves a great photo. You don't need an expensive camera, just an extra couple of minutes to get the shot right.
Profile photo: use a clear, good quality photo, and show your trade if you can. A picture of you on the job works well. YOUR BIO: Keep it short and tell people: ■ What you're studying or training in ■ Your apprenticeship level or year ■ Any qualifications or achievements
you already have
BEFORE YOU POST:
Tidy up: ■ Remove clutter where possible Get closer: ■ Show the detail rather than relying on zooming in
Use natural light where possible: ■ It will usually give you a clearer image
Take several angles: ■ Choose the best one afterwards
SHOW YOUR PROGRESS: Let people see how far you're coming on: ■ Share qualifications and training
you've completed
■ Celebrate new skills and milestones
Check the background: ■ Make sure there's no customer information, addresses or paperwork visible, and get permission first
■ Show that you're committed to
learning and developing
Show your progress, take pride in your work and let people see what you can do. You never know where your next opportunity could come from.

Q: What first got you into plumbing? A: I wondered what it would be like, and then I realised it was the best thing I could have ever done. Q: You won our HIP Learner of the Year this year. How did that feel? A: I was very shocked, but once it sank in I felt real pride that my hard work had paid off. Q: If you were starting your course again, what's one thing you'd do differently?

There is always someone happy to help. Q: Where are you now, and what's next for you? A: I'm now with Gibson Energy Services, and next I'm in the training squad for the Japan 2028 WorldSkills. HIP
LOCTITE
LOCTITE® 577 THREAD SEALANT
GET IT RIGHT FIRST TIME
A reliable seal is one of those small details that makes a big difference. Here is how LOCTITE® 577 helps you get metal pipe threads right first time. WHAT IS LOCTITE® 577? LOCTITE® 577 is a liquid thread sealant for metal pipes and fittings. It fills the gaps between threaded parts, sealing and locking the joint at the same time. It works on straight-to-straight and straight-to-taper fittings in brass, copper, iron and stainless steel.
HOW TO APPLY IT
■
Clean the metal threads so they are free from contamination.
■
Leave the first thread free.
■
Apply a small 360° bead around the leading male thread.
■
Assemble and tighten in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
TOP TIP
Less is more. You do not need to cover the whole fitting in product. Too much is messy and unnecessary. A neat bead in the right place is the key to a clean, professional joint. For learners building good habits on the tools, that means strong, tidy and serviceable seals every time.
577 WHY USE IT?
■
Gives an instant lowpressure seal.
■
Resists vibration loosening.
■
Helps protect threads against corrosion.
■
Comes apart with standard hand tools for maintenance.

THE FEEDBACK SANDWICH
HIP
FEEDBACK LIKE A PRO
Whether you’re in the classroom, workshop or on site, feedback helps you improve. Learning how to receive it professionally and give it constructively is a skill that will benefit you throughout your career. TAKING FEEDBACK WELL
WHY FEEDBACK MATTERS As an apprentice or learner, you’ll receive a lot of feedback. Tutors, assessors and employers all want to help you develop your skills and become the best tradesperson you can be. Nobody gets everything right first time, and you’re not expected to. Feedback helps you spot what you’re doing well and where you can improve. The key is to see it as guidance rather than criticism. Good feedback focuses on the work, not the person. If someone takes the time to show you a better way to do something, they’re helping you learn faster.
The best learners don’t know everything – they stay open to learning. ■ LISTEN FIRST – Hear the whole point before
you respond.
■ DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY – Feedback is
usually about the task, not about you.
■ ASK QUESTIONS – If something isn’t clear, ask
for an example or demonstration.
■ SAY THANKS – A simple “Thanks, I’ll work on that”
shows professionalism.
■ ACT ON IT – The real value of feedback comes
when you use it to improve.
WHEN FEEDBACK FEELS UNFAIR Occasionally, feedback may feel unfair or poorly delivered. The important thing is how you respond. ■ STAY CALM – Keeping your cool helps you
think clearly.
■ ASK FOR CLARIFICATION – “Can you show
me what you mean?” often turns a difficult conversation into a useful one.
■ BE RESPECTFUL – If you disagree, explain
your point calmly and professionally.
■ MOVE FORWARD – Don’t dwell on negative
comments. Focus on what you can learn and improve.

THE FEEDBACK SANDWICH
GIVING FEEDBACK As your career progresses, you may find yourself helping newer apprentices, supervising jobs or even running your own team. Being able to give feedback well is just as important as receiving it.
One of the simplest techniques is the Feedback Sandwich.
HERE'S AN EXAMPLE: "You did a neat job on that pipework – next time just double-check the angles before soldering. You're really improving."
STEP 1: START WITH A POSITIVE
Highlight something the person
has done well.
The improvement point sits in the middle, supported by encouragement on both sides. The message is clear, and the person is more likely to take it on board.
WHY IT WORKS People are more receptive to feedback when they feel respected. The Feedback Sandwich helps you be honest while still being supportive.

CLASSROOM TASK – TURN IT AROUND Some feedback comes out harsh or unhelpful. Using the Feedback Sandwich, rewrite each line below so it sounds constructive and encouraging.
UNHELPFUL FEEDBACK
YOUR IMPROVED VERSION
That looks terrible.
You're too slow.
You didn't follow instructions.
You've made a right mess of that.
Did you even read the instructions?
That's not how I'd have done it.
You're going to have to redo all of this.
Were you not paying attention?
I haven't got time to keep showing you.
TOP TIP One of the most professional things you can do is stay calm, listen carefully and focus on improving. The people who keep learning throughout their careers are usually the ones who go furthest.

YOUR GUIDE TO COLLEGE LIFE
GETTING ORGANISED FOR THE NEW YEAR Whether you're brand new or returning to college, these tips will help you settle into a routine and stay on top of things from day one. THESE HABITS WILL HELP YOU START STRONG: ■ Build a Routine — Sort out your travel, clothes and kit the night before. A calm start sets up a good day. ■ Know Your Timetable — Keep it somewhere you'll actually see it — on your phone, in a planner, or on the wall at home. ■ Stay on Top of Coursework — Don't let tasks pile up. A little and often beats a last-minute rush. ■ Use a Planner or App — Note down deadlines, assignments and anything you've been asked to bring in. Keeping everything in one place makes life easier. ■ Balance College and Home — Give yourself proper downtime too. Rest helps you focus when it counts. ■ Turn Up Ready — On time, prepared and ready to learn. It's the simplest way to make a good impression.

YOUR GUIDE TO COLLEGE LIFE
KITTING YOURSELF OUT Having the right kit, and looking after it, is part of becoming a competent plumber. Here's how to get equipped sensibly for the year ahead. WHAT YOU'LL ACTUALLY NEED: ■ The Basics First — Check with your college before you buy anything. Many will give you a list of exactly what's needed for your course. ■ PPE Matters — Safety boots, eye protection and gloves aren't optional. Get them early, look after them, and wear them properly. ■ Build Your Toolkit Gradually — Start with the essentials and add as you go. You'll learn which tools you reach for most. ■ Buy Quality Where It Counts — You don't need the most expensive tools, but reliable tools are worth investing in. ■ Label Everything — Tools have a habit of wandering. Mark yours clearly so they find their way back. ■ Look After Your Kit — Clean tools last longer and work better. A few minutes at the end of the day saves money in the long run.
TOP TIP A WELL-KEPT TOOLKIT TELLS EMPLOYERS YOU TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR WORK.

FINDING YOUR FEET
Starting somewhere new can feel daunting, but everyone around you was once in the same position. Settling in, asking questions and being yourself will get you further than trying to know it all.
TOP TIP SET YOURSELF ONE SMALL GOAL FOR THE TERM. REACHING IT BUILDS THE CONFIDENCE TO SET THE NEXT ONE.
HOW TO SETTLE IN AND GROW IN CONFIDENCE: ■ Don't Compare Yourself to Others — Some people may arrive with more experience, but everyone has things to learn. ■ Ask Questions — Asking when you're unsure shows you want to learn. It's a strength, not a weakness. ■ Get to Know People — A friendly word goes a long way. Good classmates make the whole year more enjoyable. ■ Speak Up if You're Struggling — Whether it's coursework, confidence or something outside college, let your tutor know sooner rather than later. ■ Support Each Other — Everyone started as a beginner. A group that helps each other learns faster and enjoys it more. ■ Look Ahead — Picture where you'd like to be by next summer, and take it one small step at a time. Progress adds up.

REVISION TOP TIPS
REVISION THAT ACTUALLY STICKS A new year at college, a fresh start – and somewhere down the line, assessments. But here's the good news: the learners who find revision easiest aren't necessarily the cleverest ones.

Test yourself on one topic for ten minutes, without your notes Link a piece of theory to a real job you've done or watched someone else do Explain something you've learned to someone else
Revision is a skill, the same as wiping a joint or balancing a system. You're not born good at it – you get good at it by doing it. Every small session builds a little more confidence, and by the time assessments come round, you'll be ready instead of panicking. So start small, start now, and trust that it adds up. A few minutes this week could save a lot of stress later on.
