INDUSTRY NEWS PANASONIC REMINDS INDUSTRY TO BE READY FOR R22 PHASE OUT IN 2015 ADEY’S ANNUAL CHARITY TEE-OFF An annual golf day hosted by ADEY Professional Heating Solutions has raised almost £5,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The event was supported by other industry manufacturers including Ideal Boilers, Ideal Commercial, Stelrad, Wilo, Buteline, PTS, Bansal and City Plumbing.

With the countdown well and truly underway for the R22 phase out, Panasonic is reminding distributors and installers to act now to replace all climate control systems still using the refrigerant gas. From 1st January 2015, it will no longer be legal to top up or replenish a system using R22 gas. R22 refrigerant is a hydro chlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) that is commonly used in air conditioning and contributes to global warming when released into the atmosphere. If you have an existing installation that contains R22, Panasonic would be very happy to review it and offer solutions for replacement.

ED BALLS OFFICIALLY OPENS NEW PRODUCTION LINE AT WORCESTER’S CLAY CROSS FACTORY EPIC TREK BOOSTS VITAL CHARITY WORK Plumb & Parts Center’s Keith Driscoll has completed an epic 500 miles cycling trek from St Malo to Bordeaux. Keith and four friends, took the challenge, arranged by Polypipe, to raise money for three charities. The team hopes to raise £4,000, which will be split between Cancer Research UK, the British Heart Foundation and the Katie Haines Memorial Trust. The Trust, one of Plumb and Parts’ nominated charities, was set up following the death of Katie, who was only 31 when a carbon monoxide (CO) leak from a faulty boiler caused her to pass out and drown in the bath in 2010. The charity is backing Plumb and Parts Center’s Make it Law Campaign, which calls for CO alarms to be fitted when any carbon-burning appliance is installed in England and Wales – it’s already compulsory in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Shadow chancellor, Ed Balls MP, and North East Derbyshire MP, Natascha Engel, officially opened Worcester, Bosch Group’s new gas boiler production line at the company’s Clay Cross factory on Thursday 20th November. The two MPs were welcomed with a tour of the factory, which is home to Worcester’s Oil-fired Centre of Excellence and produces around 25,000 oil-fired boilers each year, before cutting the ribbon on a new £2.5 million production assembly line that will see gas boilers manufactured specifically for export to Belgium. This new line marks the first stage in the company’s export plans, and it is expected that the line will go on to produce gas boilers for the American market plus 20 other European countries.

TRITON BACKS WOMEN IN INDUSTRY A new recruit at Triton is hoping to buck a national trend by encouraging more young female engineers to follow her lead and take up a career in the manufacturing. With women accounting for just 6 per cent of the engineering workforce in the UK, Emily Golding, who has recently taken up a new role as Trainee Design Engineer at Triton, says that the perception of engineering is changing for the better. Having achieved A-levels in maths, physics and further maths, Emily went on to achieve an advanced apprenticeship qualification in Mechanical Engineering and has since completed the first year of a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Mechanical Engineering. In her new role at Triton, Emily is hoping to take her career to the next level.

BRISTAN SHARES PLUMBING EXPERTISE WITH WESTON COLLEGE STUDENTS Bristan recently held a special open day at its Tamworth headquarters for a group of budding plumbers from Weston College in the South West of England. Playing host to a group of nine young students who spent the day touring Bristan’s headquarters, during the jam-packed day, the plumbing students met with Bristan’s product managers, in-house design team and testing facilities staff, as well as receiving hands-on experience with an easy-fit kitchen tap time trial challenge.

There was also an opportunity for the students to gain additional insight through a question and answer session with Bristan’s care engineers and training manager. Scott Austin, a tutor from Weston College, commented: “In addition to theory learning, it is important for students to get real hands-on experience of products and the industry from people in the know. As such, despite being some way away, we choose Bristan on account of the company being the shower and tap market leader and its training capabilities, and they did not disappoint.”

PTS MANAGER REMEMBERED WITH CHARITY GOLF DAY In memory of former Plumbing Trade Supplies Business Manager and devoted charity fundraiser Mark Grant, who passed away last year, PTS recently held a charity golf day that successfully raised over £3,000 for the SAMH and Cruse Bereavement charities. Mr Grant, who worked as a Business Manager at PTS in Scotland for more than five years, was the driving force behind many annual charity events held at Bonnybridge Golf Club, of which he was a member. PTS staff decided that it was only right to continue Mr Grant’s good work, and so organised the event this year in his name. It was held at the very same club. The £3,000 charity money achieved by the event was raised through golfer entry fees and raffle tickets.

Water treatment specialist, Sentinel, kindly donated the winner’s trophy, as it has done for many years while Mr Grant was organising the event. Gary Campbell, Sentinel Area Manager for Scotland and Northern Ireland, and Mr Grant’s mother awarded the trophy to the victorious ‘Team Rio’, which took inspiration for its name from Mr Grant’s favourite band, Duran Duran.

Richard Cripps, a 30-year-old Heating and Plumbing Engineer who is currently working towards his Level 3 in Solar and Renewable Energy at college, has been announced as the winner.

DON’T FALL FOR SLIPS & TRIPS AT WORK Slips, trips and falls are one of the main causes of workplace fatalities and major injuries in the UK. In 2012 / 2013 alone, they were estimated to have cost the UK economy two million lost working days(1) and were responsible for in excess of 29,000 reported over seven day major injuries or fatality incidents.

Statistics aside, sufferers often have to endure pain and discomfort, injury rehabilitation, lost work opportunities and lost income – particularly painful if they are self-employed, so prevention is critical. Here Susan Peverelli, product manager at Timberland PRO®, looks at what can be done to help reduce this major workplace problem.

So how do you help prevent a slip, trip or fall related accident at work?

First and foremost, ensure the area in which you or your colleagues are working is tidy and free from slip and trip hazards. The untidier a workplace the greater the accident risk. For those in building and construction or who will be out and about a lot as part of their job, think about the work environment. Will you be in wet, muddy or on uneven surfaces, climbing up and down ladders or stairways, going from dry to wet or having to twist, turn, bend or kneel as part of the job?

Identify what the main slip, trip and fall risks are in your work environment and select safety footwear designed to deal with them.

To the untrained eye, a lot of safety footwear today looks similar, but under the surface the difference in technical features can be massive and contribute significantly to comfort, well-being and above all else safety.

The key is to match the safety footwear performance features to the hazards you will encounter and there are a number of considerations to take into account:  Sole Performance: Think of a sole unit as a tyre tread, designed to provide grip performance and stability. Just as tyres are designed for specific terrains, so too are sole units.

The type of hazards, environment and conditions encountered will help determine the required sole unit. Wrong sole unit in the wrong

environment can increase a slip or trip risk. An injected PU/TPU sole unit will provide enhanced grip in addition to high level comfort, shock absorption and greater flexibility. Abrasion resistance within the sole unit is also important feature to look for.

DID YOU KNOW An easy way of identifying if safety footwear has been tested for slip resistance is to check its coefficient of friction (CoF) test values. The higher the CoF, the better the slip resistance.

Look for CoF results higher than the minimum requirements set out in EN ISO 20345/6/7. Footwear passing the EN slip resistance test will be marked with one of the following codes, SRA (tested on ceramic tile wetted with dilute soap solution), SRB (tested on smooth steel with glycerol) or SRC (tested under both conditions).  Physical Protection: If there is a danger from heavy or sharp objects dropping onto, or piercing the footwear ensure that appropriate physical protection measures are in place. This includes toe and ankle protection, pierce resistant sole units and scuff caps.  Durability: Opt for premium materials such as high quality leathers made in the manufacturing process (in the uppers and the sole unit) as this will increase the durability of the footwear and in turn the lifespan. Attention to detail will also have a benefit. Look for additional stitching and flexible reinforcements on the toe caps and heels to reduce wear and tear.  Comfort: Critical not just for worker well-being but also for accident prevention avoid heavy, cumbersome or inflexible safety footwear which increases foot fatigue. The latest innovations in the market include anti-foot fatigue systems, enhanced insoles and the

use of breathable technical fibres designed to provide temperature control with the addition of antibacterial and moisture absorption performance to manage perspiration within the footwear. Consider composite metal-free safety footwear which is also lighter. Look for ergonomically designed padded collars which will increase comfort around the ankle particularly when flexing or kneeling when working.  Combining Style, Quality and Substance: More than ever before, safety footwear manufacturers are looking at high street style and are incorporating this into their designs to reflect growing customer demand.

For leading brands, this emphasis on style is always combined with the development of critical safety performance features as highlighted above. Manufacturers such as Timberland PRO® also work closely with customers to create new products that meet specific industry needs or provide solutions to key hazards and put an emphasis on quality and product development. Look for manufacturers that can demonstrate this attention to detail, creation of innovative solutions and focus on quality.

Conclusion Slips, trips and falls are extremely difficult to manage, given the way people work and the environments in which that work is carried out.

PPE should always be the last line of defence, but where it is necessary, it is essential to take time to know the hazards of the workplace and select the right solutions.

INTERVIEW HIP!: What extra training would have been useful to you at college?

ADAM: It would definitely be renewable energy as obviously that’s what our business relates to. When I originally studied, they didn’t cover this area so I’m really pleased that the syllabus includes it now. My apprentices get to learn about it at college, which is great.

Adam Bainbridge AGE: 24 COMPANY: Teesdale Renewables HIP!: Where did you start your plumbing training?

ADAM: I started with doing my NVQ 3 in Plumbing and Heating at Darlington College.

HIP!: Have you been on any further training courses?

ADAM: Yes, I’ve had training on OFTEC boilers and Wood burning stoves from HETAS. I’ve also had Biomass training through HETAS. HIP!: As the first AOY winner, can you tell us how has it helped you in your career?

ADAM: It was definitely the best thing that happened to me. I wasn’t too keen on the publicity at the time but after winning, I received so much press coverage, it really helped my business. So much so that I haven’t had to publicise since then! It’s been fantastic for my business.

HIP!: Did you set up your business straight away or did you have an employer?

ADAM: I was 18 when I set up my business and still at college. I was working three days a week for Jackie Walker and it was only two weeks before I started working on my own. I’m still working with him now!

Although I started as AG Bainbridge in 2009, I had bought the Teesdale Renewables name in 2009 and eventually started trading in 2012.

HIP!: Looking back, when you were first qualified, what would have been helpful after you left college?

ADAM: When you’re looking to set up your own business I think it would be helpful to have some training and support on how to go about it, as I had to learn by myself; picking it all up as I went along. So probably guidance on cashflow, accounts and stock management – and all made specific to plumbing too.

HIP!: Are there any tools or brands that you were trained on at college that you use now?

ADAM: Yes, we were trained on Worcester Bosch plus I went to Austria for a week to visit Eta where I visited their factory and learned

about their Biomass boilers, which we highly recommend.

HIP!: What advice would you give would-be entrants?

ADAM: Absolutely go for it. It’s definitely worth the experience.

Meeting the manufacturers and visiting their stands were brilliant opportunities too. The whole competition was a really good experience.

HIP!: What are your plans for the future?

ADAM: I’d definitely like the business to carry on as it’s going. We went from 0 to 100 mph very quickly. Our focus here is on educating our residential clients on taking advantage of domestic biomass boilers. Currently we have more commercial clients so we’re looking to share the benefits to our residential clients too.

NATIONAL COMPETITION How does the competition work?

All students that are entered will attend one of our six regional heats held at colleges across the country.

Winners are chosen at each regional heat. Every entrant will receive tools plus a Certificate of Achievement that they can keep in their portfolio.

All of our final regional winners will be invited to attend an all expenses paid trip to our Live Final which takes place on 29th and 30th April at the state of the art ADEY Conference and Training Centre in Cheltenham.

All of our competition entrants will take part in practical plumbing activities that will test their knowledge and skills that they have learnt on their course.

All finalists from the regional heats will receive a selection of prizes.

Our final winner not only receives the prestigious title and glory of the ‘Copper Initiative National Apprentice of the Year,’ but also a trophy and prizes from Copper Initiative.

We’re delighted to see that the competition is growing year on year. It’s a fantastic opportunity for apprentices, lecturers, manufacturers and leaders from amongst the plumbing industry to meet.

SPOT THE MISTAKES IN THIS STEP BY STEP...

COLD WATER STORAGE CISTERN & HOT WATER CYLINDER INSTALLATION This guide is to assist you in planning an installation of a cold water storage cistern and the selection of the appropriate cylinder for the system type.

You may be working on an existing installation which has an old galvanised cistern and the cylinder requires replacing.

How do you know what size the cistern should be, or indeed what type of cylinder to install?

If the cold water system is a direct system then usually the cistern will be 100 / 150 litres, if the cold water system is an indirect system 230 litres will be required (see BSEN806).

The next stage is to look at the source of hot water: gas boiler, solid fuel, immersion heater etc‌ Once the cylinder is selected and appropriately sized according to occupancy numbers in the house, you will need to dress the CWSC (Cold Water Storage Cistern) after removing the old cistern and cylinder appropriately.

Measuring the cistern to drill the hole for the FOV (float operated valve). The manufacturers will furnish you with guidance on this, usually 60mm from top of cistern to centre of hole drilled.

The cistern is now dressed. As part of the kit supplied you will also have the lid and the jacket to fit, when the cistern has been filled and checked. The location of the cistern must adhere to the following;  Loft insulation removed from under the cistern  Cistern to be supported under its entire base using tongue and groove boarding or marine ply. Not chipboard and resting on a minimum of 3 joists with at least 150mm protruding around all sides of the cistern  Installed with at least 350mm from roof to allow for maintenance The FOV will be connected to the rising main via a tap connector.

So now you have correctly selected your cylinder you must begin to supply the water to the cylinder. The cold feed from the CWSC to the cylinder will have a wheel head gate valve attached for maintenance purposes.

All pipe-work to and from the cistern, and to the cylinder, now needs to be considered.

The system we are working on is a single feed direct hot water system; from the list below which type of cylinder would you select?    

The installation will now have the CWSC and the cylinder in place, with a cold feed from the CWSC to the cylinder which has a gate valve installed. The cold feed should have a drain off valve installed at the lowest point for draining the cylinder.

In order to install the expansion pipe it is important to consider the head of water (system height).

The height of the expansion pipe must be a minimum of 150mm above the cistern, then have an additional 40mm added for every metre head of water (system height).

For example, if the system height from highest outlet to cistern water level is 2m then the expansion pipe will be installed at a height of 230mm (150mm minimum + 80mm for the 2m (system height)).

The top of the cylinder will have a cylinder connector attached to the pipework (draw off pipe) to the appliances.

The only connection that has not been illustrated to you via this walkthrough is the warning pipe connected to the CWSC. This is connected to the screened warning pipe connector and terminates outside the property.

This walkthrough featured a SINGLE FEED DIRECT HOT WATER SYSTEM. The cylinder you should have selected from the list on page 27 is the third option of a direct cylinder.

The other options were:  Dual coil indirect cylinder – used commonly for dual source of heat installations (double feed).  Combination direct cylinder – similar to the installation we have looked at here except the cistern is already combined with the cylinder in one unit.  Indirect cylinder – used for a double feed system with a heat exchanger (coil, annulus) inside the cylinder heated from a source of heat. The cylinder is fed from the CWSC and the source of heat and heat exchanger (primaries) are fed from the F&E cistern (feed and expansion).

Now the expansion pipe needs to be considered.
