ENERGY CENTRE OFFICIALLY OPENED

INDUSTRY OSCAR FOR ADEY’S BEST PRACTICE ADEY Professional Heating Solutions has been crowned winner in the Service and Maintenance Initiative of the Year category at the 21st anniversary H&V News Awards for its best practice approach to central heating system maintenance at the industry Oscars in London.

GCS Training, the business training arm of Gower College Swansea, has officially opened a brand new Energy Centre at its new Hill House site. Julie James, Deputy Minister for Skills and Technology, was among the special guests at the launch event. The Minister was shown around the fully refurbished facilities and saw first-hand how the centre will deliver state-of-the-art training courses for the electrical, gas and plumbing trades. GCS Training has already forged links with leading employers such as Tata Steel, Smart Energy Wales, City and County of Swansea, Green Tech, Amroc Heating, Westward Energy Services and Advanced Heating Wales Ltd, many of whom were represented at the launch event. Investment in the Energy Centre, which was initially proposed by GCS Training staff as part of the college’s Innovation Fund project in 2014, includes £50,000 worth of equipment supplied by leading industry manufacturer Viessmann.

MIRA RELAUNCHES APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME

PTS ACHIEVES CHARITY GRAND SLAM A collection of local branches of Plumbing Trade Supplies (PTS) ‘lined up’ deserving customers from around the South Wales area to attend two Six Nations matches, while raising over £1,300 for its official partner charities Mind and Cruse Bereavement Care. PTS branches in South Wales and the South West invited over 80 local customers to attend the Wales versus Ireland, and Wales versus England rugby matches held at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. As well as enjoying the sporting spectacle, attendees generously contributed to the charity funds thanks to collections by the PTS staff and fun activities such as ‘guess the score’.

Mira Showers has relaunched its long-standing apprenticeship scheme, starting with the employment of four hopeful starters in September this year. Designed to attract the best of local talent, the company decided to relaunch the apprenticeship scheme at a time when the manufacturing process is becoming increasingly automated: and which it believes now demands new and different skill sets.

The scheme aims to emulate the high standard of training offered by the company in the 1960s, and guarantee its reputation for engineering excellence well into the future. The original scheme’s 45th anniversary was celebrated in 2011, with a reunion party at the town’s local football club.

TEN FACTS ABOUT DYSLEXIA

JUST A WORD… Have you always struggled with reading and writing and find you need more time than others in exams? Read on, help may be at hand…

Do you have problems remembering instructions? Do you often write letters and figures the wrong way round and have difficulties with spelling? Do you have poor concentration? If the answer is yes to these questions, you could have dyslexia.

Unfortunately, dyslexia isn’t always picked up at secondary school level.

By the time students with learning difficulties go on to further or higher education, their confidence can be low. They know they have a reading / writing problem and don’t know what can be done about it.

It’s a big problem as 10% of the population in the UK are dyslexic, with 4% being severely affected. Dyslexia is a subject that has caused much debate over the years. The first descriptions – from over a hundred years ago – used the term ‘word blindness’, reflecting the view that difficulties in reading were caused by problems in visual perception. It was not until the 1970s that the role of language processing was recognised and only in the last 20 years it has been accepted as the primary feature of dyslexia.

Sadly, in the past people suffering from dyslexia were often labelled as ‘slow’, ‘thick’ or ‘lazy’ – this simply isn’t true. You might be surprised to learn that Alexander Graham Bell, Michael Faraday, Winston Churchill, Hans Christian Andersen and Albert Einstein were all dyslexic.

DID YOU KNOW People who train to be plumbers are likely to have a higher than average chance of being dyslexic. This is because dyslexics often enjoy and excel at solving puzzles – one of the traits that is a mark of a good plumber.

If you suspect you may be dyslexic, you will need to talk to someone at the college who deals with learning support. They will be able to give you advice and may be able to arrange a screening test.

Unfortunately, full Diagnostic Assessments, which are carried out by psychologists, are not funded by the NHS and can be expensive, costing hundreds of pounds.

What help is available?

It has been proven that if students suffering with dyslexia are given extra time in exams, they can attain higher results. Your college may be able to offer you Access Arrangements, which will give you additional help, including extra time. To qualify for an Access Arrangement the student must have an assessment of their reading, writing and other skills that show they have dyslexia.

Help is also available in the form of computer software, including voice recognition and text to speech applications. Coloured overlays or question papers printed on coloured paper can be beneficial, as well as changing the colour of the font used.

 The word dyslexia is derived from the Greek word ‘dys’ (meaning poor or inadequate) plus ‘lexis’ (words or language).  Dyslexia is a unique mindset that is often gifted and productive but learns differently than other minds.  Dyslexia only affects some skills and abilities and is not linked to a person’s general level of intelligence.  Six genes have been identified that may be responsible for the condition, four of which affect the way the brain is formed during early life.  Dyslexia commonly runs in families.  Dyslexics often enjoy and excel at solving puzzles.  Dyslexics have excellent thinking skills in the areas of conceptualisation, reason, imagination and abstraction.  Dyslexics typically have a large spoken vocabulary for their age.  Dyslexics score significantly higher on test when they are given additional time and given the test orally.  Dyslexia is by far the most common learning disability.

“We were happy to help with the judging and were very impressed by the contestants. They were presentable and courteous, but not only that, you could see how enthusiastic they were.

This says a lot about the individuals, I hope they keep this up throughout their working lives. It was good to watch the students in action. Overall, we thought the quality of the plumbing work was very good.

“Skill competitions are important, because it helps the students to completely focus on the task in hand. They know they have to follow detailed plans and it has to be completed within a certain time frame. This obviously puts them under pressure, which isn’t a bad thing;

“For the final, we introduced SaniAccess 3 into the practical test.

This product is suitable for an ensuite e.g. WC, washbasin, shower and bidet. Once again, the contestants were brilliant, you could see they were giving it their all.

“As a company, Saniflo does everything it can to help installers, whether they are just starting out in the industry, or are seasoned plumbers. We have a wide range of products that have provided solutions to plumbing problems for many years.

In fact, Saniflo pioneered the pump macerator in the UK back in 1979 and this product is now seen very much as a standard plumbing device. Skills competitions are a great way to demonstrate the abilities of young plumbers to the industry, and to the general public. Walls covered with rows of accurately positioned, beautifully jointed copper pipework gives confidence that the industry is in safe hands. Copper Initiative has been sponsoring plumbing competitions for many years, previously as UK Copper Board, and the 2015 competition proved to be a closely fought contest with all the competitors displaying excellent copper skills.

ADEY HELPS CROWN APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR Europe’s No. 1 manufacturer of magnetic filters, ADEY Professional Heating Solutions, continued its support of HIP’s National Apprentice Plumber of the Year competition, with the final taking place at its Gloucestershire Training and Conference Centre.

ADEY is passionate about supporting young apprentices and was proud to see the high standard of work produced by the seven finalists as they competed in the competition final. “As an industry we need to make a concerted effort to develop these skills from a young age and this competition is the perfect opportunity to do. It’s a great platform to improve confidence and although there is obviously pressure, it’s also a supportive learning environment where the onus is on problem solving and asking questions.

supporting for a long time to come.

“Finally, our congratulations go to Tanagon Ashworth on becoming this year’s Apprentice Plumber of the Year! This year’s finalists certainly gave the judges a very difficult job in choosing the winner because their work was exceptional. Yorkshire Copper Tube are very pleased to have been involved once again with this year’s Apprentice Plumber of the Year competition.

We find it very encouraging that the new breed of plumbers coming into our industry are advancing their skills by using copper.

NATIONAL COMPETITION

NATIONAL APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR 2015 The nationwide hunt for 2015 Copper Initiative HIP! Apprentice Plumber of the Year is over and we can now reveal the winner!

After months of regional heats, the two-day final of the competition took place on 29 – 30 April at Adey Professional Heating Solutions Headquarters. It was a tough contest, but Tanagon Ashworth nailed the title. Tanagon studies at Accrington & Rossendale College and is in his second year of his Level 2 course, he will be progressing on to Level 3 next year. His delighted employer is Jeff Pearson Plumbing & Heating.

Congratulations to the seven finalists who took part, it was a closely fought competition and they should all feel proud of themselves. They all received a special cut glass trophy, a certificate of achievement, a range of tools donated

by Knipex, a MagnaClean Professional 2, a Stabila Level and a £50 voucher donated by Copper Initiative.

The outright winner was overwhelmed with his reward. A stunned Tanagon went away with almost £2,000 worth of tools and prizes. Certainly worth all the work in the end! Copper Initiative awarded Tanagon with an iPad Mini plus a new press fit machine. He was also given a Hitachi powertool, a RIDGID laser level and a range of Knipex tools.

Commenting on his win and his career in plumbing, Tanagon said: “This is the second time I’ve entered a national competition and I’ve been practicing and practicing. Last year I won my regional heat and I am so proud to be taking away the winning trophy this year.”

NATIONAL COMPETITION WINNER Tanagon Ashworth is the Copper Initiative Apprentice of the Year HIP!: Is this the first skills competition you have entered?

TANAGON: It’s the second time.

I won the regional heat last year and so was determined to win the competition this year! My boss and lecturer always teach me to go for quality, not speed.

HIP!: What made you think about entering?

TANAGON: You have to pace yourself. There is a lot of pressure. You have to practice and practice and practice… and then practice again!

HIP!: What attracted you to a career in the plumbing industry?

TANAGON: The jobs are different every day. You work in different places all the time. I really like the variety. That’s the best thing about plumbing, every day brings a new challenge.

HIP!: How did you manage to get an apprenticeship?

TANAGON: I had already started my Level 1 in plumbing, when I heard about a company offering an apprenticeship and my lecturer introduced me to them. It had been really hard to find work at first, as I put my CV in the merchants and rang around companies but no one had work they could offer me. It came down to the increase in cost of insurance for the company. I am so grateful to Jeff Pearson Plumbing & Heating for giving me the opportunity to work. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for them.

HIP!: How did you feel when your name was announced as the winner?

TANAGON: I couldn’t believe it. I worked really hard and practiced so much for this. It means so much to me.

TANAGON: They will be really useful for work and save me a lot of money.

I am looking forward to using the iPad!

HIP!: What would you say to students thinking of entering next year’s competition?

TANAGON: Go for it! It is really good experience and you can add it to your CV. Enjoy it and practice. Not every student gets the opportunity so I feel very happy.

HIP!: What have you got out of this experience (besides the prize!)

TANAGON: The competition has given me confidence in myself and in my abilities. It made me work and practice and I am now a better plumber.

HIP!: What’s your ambition for the future?

TANAGON: I want to progress on to my Level 3 and one day I want to run my own plumbing business and offer someone an apprenticeship.

Because I was given the opportunity of an apprenticeship I want to give someone else that chance. I am really grateful to my employer, Jeff Pearson Plumbing & Heating and want to stay working for them to gain experience but also out of loyalty. If it were not for my employer and my lecturer, I wouldn’t be here today.

VAN REVIEW: MERCEDES SPRINTER 313 CDI LONG WHEELBASE, HIGH ROOF The Sprinter is big news in van circles; in fact it seems that every other large van on British roads has the three-pointed star logo fitted to the front and back.

Words: Martyn Collins The fact that Mercedes has shifted over a quarter of a million of them in the UK alone, seems to bear out this theory, but why is the Sprinter such a hit and why should you consider it?

To find out, we’ve been driving the Sprinter 313 CDI, in long wheelbase, high roof configuration, with a sixspeed manual gearbox.

Outside and in!

Let’s start with the exterior; that massive grille, badge and headlights are unmistakably Mercedes. Plus, in long wheelbase, high roof form, the Sprinter is quite a chunk of van - especially in profile. Yes, it’s more function than style, but those hefty bumpers and that thick rubbing strip

down the side, look as though they mean business and will resist minor bumps with ease.

Move inside the Sprinter and the first thing you’ll notice is that despite the height, this large van is very easy to get in and out of. Once seated, although it’s a sizeable van, you don’t feel overwhelmed in the cabin.

For a start, the width of the cabin means there is plenty of leg and shoulder room, the controls and switchgear are logically placed and then there’s the driver’s seat, which is comfortable, supportive and has plenty of adjustment. Finally, the dash-mounted gear lever falls easily to hand. There are even five, yes five, cup holders dotted around the interior, so plenty of places to hold those well-deserved cups of tea or coffee!

Quality interior Once you’ve found a comfortable driving position, you’ll appreciate the quality of the Sprinter’s interior. For its £32,964 price, this Mercedes van doesn’t feel particularly luxurious; we felt optional items such as £593 worth of air-conditioning should really be standard. Want to spend more? Well, there are plenty of options, such as Becker MAP PILOT sat-nav to help you do so.

Still, what you might lack in standard equipment, you more than make up for with the list of standard safety kit.

Included are the expected airbags, ESP traction control and ABS brakes. Plus, the Sprinter has added extra clever features including Crosswind Assist, which stops it from rolling over in a sudden sideways gust. The Crosswind

VAN REVIEW Assist definitely works, as we had first-hand experience of it during our test period.

Equipment aside, you will appreciate the switchgear, plastics plus the general fit and finish, which all feels a cut above rivals, such as Fiat Ducato and the Iveco Daily.

A comfortable ride With its independent suspension at the front and leaf spring at the back, the Sprinter feels secure with plenty of grip in corners. Whether loaded or unloaded, this big Mercedes van has an impressively comfortable and refined ride too.

With 6945mm of long wheelbase length, reversing this Sprinter takes practice, but again those mirrors come into play. It’s a relief then, that they’re electrically adjustable and heated.

The load area itself, which is big enough between the arches to squeeze a couple of Europallets in, features wood flooring that looks both durable and hard wearing.

Performance

Hit the road and despite the length of this long wheelbase version, the precise steering together with its unexpectedly short turning circle, makes this Mercedes van particularly manoeuvrable. We were surprised at how easy it was to drive this Sprinter down tight roads with parked cars on either side.

Although in corners, don’t forget this van’s extra length and we would advise keeping a close look at the back through those large split wing mirrors.

Considering how big and boxy this Sprinter’s body is, the proven, 129bhp, 2.1-litre turbo-diesel engine is impressively versatile, because it gives all 305Nm of torque at up to 2,400 rpm. It means this Sprinter is more willing from low revs than you’d expect. Plus, because of all the torque, you find yourself using the slick, dash-mounted gear change less.

This is a big van and even with the 2,480kg kerb weight, we think the claimed 35.3 mpg unloaded combined figure is quite impressive.

Although with heavy loads such as some piping, a bathroom suite or even some bricks, we don’t think it would take much for this figure to drop below 30mpg.

But the most important question all you plumbers and heating engineers are asking, is how easy is it to get all my kit in the back of this Sprinter?

In terms of doors, there’s the expected two at the back, although conveniently they can be folded through 270-degrees and our test van had the optional rear step. It should really be standard, in our opinion, but instead it seemed like £109 well spent – especially if you’re going to be spending a lot of time loading and unloading.

If those rear doors aren’t practical enough, there’s a left hand sliding door, which we reckon will be very welcome when loading.

In conclusion...

So, can all the British buyers be wrong choosing a Sprinter? No, because although being expensive in long wheelbase, high roof form, this Mercedes van is a great all-rounder with an enviable reputation. The Sprinter can wear its three-pointed star with pride.

STEP BY STEP

ZIP’S LATEST ADDITION David Durance, technical support manager at Zip, looks at the steps involved in installing the HydroTap G4.

THE INSTALLATION: 1

Before you start work, isolate the hot and cold supplies. the bench. Assemble the tap, top black spacer, font dish, bottom space. Feed the water and vent pipes, and electrical wiring through the 35mm hole. Apply sealant to secure. Thread the stainless steel washer over the pipework and tighten with the spider clamp and nut.

4 STEP 1: After selecting the position of the font and checking water, electric and drainage connections are available, measure the width of the cupboard – Zip’s HydroTap unit will fit happily in a 500mm cupboard.

NOTE: A clearance envelope of 200mm is needed between the top of the unit and the bottom of the sink basin.

If this space is not available directly under the tap, the HydroTap unit can be fitted in an adjoining cupboard up to 1 metre away from the tap.

A 4mm buffer between the door and cupboard is also needed for adequate airflow; appropriate pads are included.

New distribution centre

However, speaking on 1st April, the tenth anniversary of the UK Government’s decision to make condensing boilers mandatory, Martyn Bridges, Director of Marketing and Technical Support at Worcester, Bosch Group, comments that there is no question the decision was a wise one.

Martyn said: “Of all of the energy efficiency schemes and regulations we have seen over the years, the change to condensing boilers remains the most effective in terms of fuel, energy and CO2 savings. Now around 1.5 million condensing boilers are now sold in the UK every year and, with condensing boilers on average 20-30% more efficient and 15-30% lower in emissions than ageing standard efficiency boilers, these savings have, and continue to, stack up.

“The longevity and success of what was such a dramatic change for the heating industry might have been somewhat different had the entire HVAC industry - installers, merchants and manufacturers alike - not supported the new ruling. Instead we saw new product development and a willingness to change working practices to support

the move from standard efficiency to condensing technology and this continues to be the case.

“The changeover to condensing boilers has also resulted in so many other positive outcomes. For example, the mass take-up of condensing technology has significantly reduced the amount of gas-fired boiler related CO incidents in the UK. As condensing boilers are room sealed and open flue boilers are effectively no longer being made, modern appliances offer greater siting flexibility as installers can now fit extraordinarily long lengths of flue compared to years gone by.

“The 2005 Building Regulations also recommended minimum levels of controls and introduced the flushing and cleansing of systems at the same time. System flushing was previously a British Standard but it wasn’t acknowledged in the Building Regulations, so even though the industry still has some way to go to standardise this practice, this was another encouraging step forward.

“However, with some 8 million noncondensing boilers still in homes

HEAT INTERFACE UNITS

HEATRAE SADIA EXPLAINS THE BENEFITS OF HEAT INTERFACE UNITS The use of Heat Interface Units (HIUs) and centralised plant to deliver heating and hot water to individual properties within multi dwelling developments is becoming increasingly common. Jon Cockburn, head of marketing at Heatrae Sadia, answers some frequently asked questions about the approach. shops and community centres. The heat is delivered through a network of pipes carrying hot water. Community and communal heating follow the same principle, but on a smaller scale – sometimes serving a single block of residential flats or apartments.

Why are HIUs used in these schemes?

What are HIUs and where are they used?

HIUs provide central heating, and sometimes domestic hot water, to individual properties within a multi dwelling development (such as a block of flats or apartments, or a larger district heating scheme) served by centralised heating plant. HIUs can be heating only or heating with domestic hot water production. They are sometimes called ‘heat boxes’.

The Hi-Max Instant ID from Heatrae Sadia has a compact design and comprises two generously sized plate heat exchangers – one for the hot water, and one for the heating system – and is designed to ensure that the primary return temperatures going back to the centralised heating system are very low to maximise the operating efficiency of the system.

Historically, in multi dwelling schemes, individual heating systems – typically comprising combi boilers or electric heaters – were installed in each property. However, the use of individual appliances will prove increasingly challenging for developers trying to meet CO2 compliance.

Centralised heating plant can help developers to meet increasingly demanding new build targets, whether using traditional fuels or low-carbon and renewable technologies.

But if centralised plant is used to serve multiple dwellings without a HIU there will be issues with temperature control and the metering/billing of an individual household’s energy use, because there will be no way to control the heating or monitor usage.

HIUs not only deliver but can also record the heat consumed by an individual dwelling. Meter reading and energy billing can be carried out remotely from a central location, which could be very attractive for councils and those operating a large portfolio of buildings. Metering can also be a positive incentive for occupants trying to lower their energy consumption and can help to reduce fuel poverty among vulnerable groups.

District heating supplies heat from a central source to a variety of buildings – which might include houses, blocks of flats or apartments, offices, schools,

Where are the HIUs installed?

HIUs can be installed within each individual dwelling, or in the dividing wall between each dwelling and the ‘landlord’ space – the latter providing easy access for inspection and maintenance.

What are the benefits?

In comparison to the traditional approach of fitting individual systems within dwellings, there are many benefits to this approach.

Centralised boiler plant eliminates the need for legally required gas appliance checks in individual properties, for which gaining access is often an issue. The time and costs involved with boiler servicing and maintenance is also significantly reduced.

It also reduces the problems associated with supplying gas to multi dwelling buildings, decreasing the risks linked to gas distribution pipework and saving costs, and eliminates the need to fit numerous flue terminals / condensate drainage systems. INTERVIEW HIP!: What made you diversify into renewable energy?

HIP!: Is there a growing demand for renewable energy?

BEN: I decided that biomass was the natural progression from normal solid fuel boilers / stoves, etc, so decided to gain qualifications in this field. I completed the HETAS H005 course in early 2014, I then gained MCS accreditation to allow us to design and install biomass systems, which would be eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

BEN: I believe there is a rapidly growing demand for renewable energy and this is amplified with the RHI. People are becoming very conscious of how they heat their homes and spend their money, so if they can install environmentally friendly systems with the benefit of gaining cash incentives, then I can only see the market growing.

Once the RHI dwindles out who knows what will happen.

HIP!: Where did you carry out your HETAS training?

NAME: Ben Bowers AGE: 27 COLLEGE ATTENDED: Gloucestershire College

BEN: I carried out my original HETAS qualifications near Derby. My latest H005 HETAS course was carried out with Windhager UK, this is the company who supply my biomass boilers. I gained experience working with their boilers whilst gaining my qualifications, so it worked really well.

QUALIFICATION GAINED: NVQ 3 Heating

HIP!: What attracted you to a career in the plumbing & heating industry?

BEN: Gain the correct qualifications and experience rather than doing a ‘fast-track’ course. I think an apprenticeship is the best route. Once qualified stick to doing high standard work rather than rushing jobs for a quick buck – word of mouth is the best form of advertising. A good reputation can take years to gain but seconds to destroy, so quality is the key.

HIP!: Did you find it difficult to find an employer?

HIP!: Tell me about your company.

BEN: Ben Bowers Heating Solutions carries out a wide range of plumbing and heating work. From bathrooms to bespoke heating systems.

Primarily we carry out installation and maintenance on many heating systems from gas and oil to biomass.

BEN: I value my membership because if we need their assistance they are always on the end of the telephone for issues such as technical advice. I also receive e-news and bulletins by email, which keeps me up to date. Having the HETAS logo also demonstrates to our customers that we are competent in what we do and that we can be trusted.

HIP!: Any advice for people coming into the industry?

BEN: The opportunity to gain a trade, so that no matter what I finally decided to do in life I always had a worthwhile qualification behind me.

BEN: I was very lucky, a local engineer was working across the road from me and my dad asked him if he needed any help – he said ‘yes’. I spent the next four and a half years working for him, full time. I finished my apprenticeship in 2009 and in 2010 started up on my own as BB Plumbing and Heating. In 2012 I entered a partnership, which helped to grow the business. The partnership ended at the beginning of this year and Ben Bowers Heating Solutions Ltd was formed in January.

HIP!: Is HETAS supportive?

HIP!: How difficult did you find the HETAS courses?

BEN: As I had plenty of experience during my apprenticeship with a HETAS installer I found the courses relatively easy. The biomass was new to me so this was slightly harder, however, the course at Windhager UK was very well presented so I learnt a lot. For all the HETAS qualifications it took about two weeks, the biomass qualification took five days.

HIP!: Did you find any problems becoming MCS accredited?

BEN: When I originally looked at MCS requirements it all seemed a bit too much, but as I looked further into it and found Easy MCS, it became very clear what I had to do. I used HETAS rather than another governing body, due to the fact I was already a member for other areas of work.

GUTTERING The installation of a Rainwater Harvesting System will require compliance with a number of the building regulations.

The angle and area of a roof is key in the design of a guttering system. Look at the image shown below.

This method is simply as follows;

(H=3 divided by 2, + W=6) then multiply L=10.

The area of a roof can be calculated using a formula found in BS EN 12056-3:2000;
