PUSH FIT STEP-BY-STEP | HIP

“MAKE SURE ALL SWARF IS REMOVED FROM THE TUBE BEFORE FITTING TECTSEAL.” STEP 1 - CUT

Cut the VSH Tectite tube with a hand tool.

Use good quality cutters, ensuring the blade is sharp and the cut is square. Make sure the tube is clean and free from damage.

STEP 4 - MEASURE

Mark the insertion depth clearly on the tube. Using a line and an ‘A’ aids visibility after insertion. VSH Tectite calibration tools and VSH Tectite debur, mark and scribe tools can also help with insertion depth marking.

VSH TECTITE HOW TO GUIDE Check out these step-by-step installation instructions for Pegler’s VSH Tectite – it’s a push fit system incorporating pipe fittings, valves and controls with proven advantages of reliability, performance and versatility.

STEP 2 - CALIBRATE

Use the VSH Tectite calibrating tools to provide a clean, square pipe with chamfered edges. Calibration re-rounds the tube after cutting to prepare it for the TectSEAL and for push-fit jointing.

STEP 5 - CONNECT

Push the tube firmly into the fitting until the insertion depth mark reaches the demounting collar. Pushing with a twist will ease insertion.

STEP 3 - INSERT

Push the TectSEAL 3PS into the tube until the flange meets the chamfered end.

TectSEAL 3PS are pre-lubricated. Make sure all swarf is removed from the tube before fitting TectSEAL.

STEP 6 - CHECK

Pull back on the pipe to check the joint is secure. VSH Tectite fittings allow the tube to rotate after jointing.

Fiona Nadine is a 34 year-old mother of two teenagers.

She waited until her children were in secondary school before pursuing her dream job. Fiona had previously been working as an Optical Assistant, and decided to attend college and study plumbing alongside her job. This enabled her to successfully complete her Level 2 and 3 Diplomas, and then go on to find employment to attain her NVQ Level 2.

I have an assortment of different sizes of pliers. I love the fact they have a smooth jaw and do not leave “teeth marks” on fittings! The comfort grip makes them extremely comfortable to use and I would recommend these to everyone!

My favourite Wera screwdriver is the Kraftform Kompakt. It has an extendable telescopic blade and interchangeable screwdriver bits hidden in the handle so if you want to pack light, you can bring just this one!

TOOL BAG

I use the Velocity Progear Rogue 5.0 which is almost as big as me! I wanted a backpack over a handheld tool bag as I’d struggled with the weight of my previous one. This tool bag has lots of compartments so it’s easy to find everything.

I love Knipex! These are, without a shadow of a doubt, worth their weight in gold!

I love the Cobras and their self locking feature. These are the best grips I own and possibly my most used tool! The smart grip makes them so comfortable to use.

I love the Wera hex key set! The set is compact and the smaller sizes are perfect for removing the grub screws in mixer taps. I like that they are colour coded for ease of size identification.

I have an assortment of different slices for both plastic and copper. I use the Rothenberger Plasticut Pro on waste pipe and I really like that you can cut the two diameters with one slice!

I like the Bahco adjustable spanners, they are comfortable to use and the rubber handle gives added grip. They have a wider jaw than some that I’ve used, which I prefer. The smaller ones fit well in tighter places.

Look after your tools because ultimately you can’t do your job without them!

STABILA SPIRIT LEVEL I use Stabila spirit levels. The one I use is magnetic and the perfect size!

While it’s definitely easier said than done, never get stressed or give up on a tough situation. There is always a solution, you just need to stay calm and positive as you try to find it.

My best piece of advice is to take a little bit of time at the beginning of the job to stop and think about what you are going to do and how to do it, because your first idea isn’t always your best idea.

When I was an apprentice, I worked with a guy who would say ‘Don’t go to the van empty handed’. That saying has stuck with me and now I always check if there is anything I can load back onto the van if I'm going out there.

As a domestic heating installer, my favourite product has to be the Wilo-Yonos Pico. I’ve been using it for years and it’s a great little pump!

One of my most common faultfinding jobs is low pressure on a heating system. The pressure and flow rates in East London are often terrible so my favourite product to install is the Wilo-Economy MHIE Multistage pump with an integrated frequency converter.

This usually solves all my problems and gives my customers an optimal showering experience!

A thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) blends cold water with hot water and maintains this at a set temperature to ensure safe and comfortable water temperatures, reducing the risk of scalding.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

WHERE TMVS SHOULD BE INSTALLED?

TMVs are intended to deliver water used for ablutionary purposes (washing, showering and bathing). Tempering valves also blend hot and cold water usually for delivery at higher temperatures not suitable for these purposes. They are used in systems where the temperature of water in the storage cylinder can exceed 60ºC, such as in solar heating systems with multiple outlets or as part of recirculating domestic hot water systems.

These valves should be installed in areas where people would be at risk of scalding.

Different TMVs are available depending on the specification and standards that they meet and the type of property they are installed in. These vary from healthcare and nursing home applications to installations from point of use of baths to centralised mixing in commercial properties such as sports facilities, where stable temperatures with high volume flow rates are required.

COLD

The controlling element of the TMV is a temperature sensor which is fully immersed in the mixed water outlet port. This expands or contracts to continually maintain the correct proportion of hot and cold water entering the valve.

Peter Booth: I left school at 18 after GCSEs and A levels and took a year out working at a local quarry before I was due to go to university. I liked earning money so decided I didn’t want to go back to education! My dad offered me an apprenticeship in the family business and I never looked back.

HIP: What tool could you not live without?

PB: A pair of grips. That defines me as a plumber.

HIP: How does social media help your business?

HIP: Best piece of advice you’ve been given?

PB: My grandad always said take your time. About two years ago I was putting right some work on a shower cubicle and I hate those sorts of jobs. My dad said, “You’ll lose money on some jobs and make money on others. Don’t get angry, just finish it and go home. It’s just one job out of all the work you do.”

the best job. I do put a lot of stuff online but you could have another guy who never posts or only has a few followers but they’re the best plumbers. Having thousands of followers doesn’t make you good at your job.

HIP: What would you say to inspire the next generation?

HIP: What skills should a successful plumber have?

PB: Think about the tradition of our trade.

Running water and sanitation have been around for centuries. It’s not just any old job, it’s a tradition and it’s always going to be around.

PB: Plumbing can be very rewarding but it can also get you down as it can be very stressful particularly putting other people’s jobs right or in winter when everyone wants you immediately. Remain positive, manage your time well and keep on top of the paperwork (you can’t do the manual side of the job without that or you’ll be working for free). But know where your skills lie – concentrate on what you’re good at. You can always pay someone to do your paperwork so long as it gets done!

HIP: Favourite plumbing influencer and why?

PB: I hate the word influencer and wouldn’t want to be called one! I just want to be known as a good plumber and role model. I just want to inspire people to do

PB: It’s very weird as I don’t do it to get business – most of my work comes from word of mouth. I do it because I like promoting plumbing as a whole not for getting jobs.

HIP: If you had an unlimited budget how would you spend it on the industry?

PB: I’ve always had a dream of having my own training centre so I’d set that up. You’d be shown how something was done, do it yourself, really learn and understand it.

Becoming MCS certified demonstrates to your customers that you install to the industry-expected level of quality.

INITIAL ASSESSMENT

Estimates can take just 10 minutes.

Suitability of existing radiators needs checking as HPs operate at a lower flow temperature; sizing is based on heat loss and not hot water demand; boilers can be kept as back-up where this demand is high.

Online tools are available to help with a precise home heat loss calculation, considering all heat emitters. Calculations make it possible to estimate running costs and RHI payments.

GET THE BEST FROM BOILERS There is a lot to consider when specifying gas boilers but these tips from Alpha Heating Innovation will help you guide your customers to the perfect solution.

RULE OF THUMB

Here is a rough guide to kW sizes of combi boilers like those in the E-Tec range: ■ 24-28 kW – will supply a single bathroom ■ 30-35 kW - will supply a bathroom and an en-suite ■ 35+ kW - will supply a two bathroom property

THREE BOILER TYPES

■ Combis - the most popular boiler for small to medium size properties with average hot water demands. They provide space heating and also hot water which is heated directly from the mains on demand.

■ Conventional (or regular) boilers - ideal for retro-fit and refurbishment projects, they provide central heating and stored hot water via a cylinder.

■ System boilers – similar to conventional boilers but they take up less space as a central heating feed and expansion cistern is not needed. Ideal for multi-bathroom properties with high hot water demands.

FROZEN CONDENSATE PIPES? When a gas boiler is operating correctly, it produces slightly acidic water as a by-product known as condensate. This is removed from the boiler by a condensate pipe. In cold weather it’s possible for this pipe to freeze, which could affect the boiler working.

T

here is no need for you or your customers to worry.

Here are three easy steps from Worcester Bosch on how to easily unfreeze a frozen condensate pipe!

STEP 01

LOCATE THE CONDENSATE PIPE

You can also suggest the following to your customers to minimise the risk of future freezing: ■ Suggest re-routing the pipe so that it terminates internally. This is the preferred method ■ Ensure the pipe run is as short as possible externally

■ If it’s outdoors it’ll be fixed to a wall emptying into a drainage system or soakaway ■ If indoors it will be underneath your boiler

■ Increase the pipe diameter

STEP 02

■ Fit a trace heating kit to the pipe externally

■ If outdoors pour warm water onto the pipe ■ If indoors, wrap the pipe in a hot water bottle

■ Consider the possibility of an air break on the pipework reducing the risk of the boiler being adversely affected by a frozen condensate pipe

THAW THE PIPE OUT

STEP 03

RESET THE BOILER ■ Quite simply, reset the boiler and if it starts running normally again then the issue is resolved!

■ Increase the angle of fall of the pipework ■ Eliminate bends on the external pipework

CONFIDENT? FEEL IT, BE IT When it comes to self-confidence it’s all about striking the right balance. It's being sure in yourself and your ability - not arrogantly, but realistically. It’s about you and your own awareness that you are capable.

HOW TO IMPROVE CONFIDENCE

Improving confidence has two parts increasing the confidence you have in yourself and your abilities and developing your ability to appear more confident to other people.

PLAN AND PREPARE

Planning and preparing is the most important part of feeling confident.

For example, if you have an interview imagine what you want to say and think about some of the questions you might be asked. Practise your replies with lecturers or classmates. How will you get to the interview, what should you wear, how long will it take to get there? Knowing that you are prepared will create a feeling of confidence on the inside which will make you look confident on the outside.

THINK POSITIVELY

Positive thought is a powerful way of improving confidence. Tell yourself that you can do anything with the right help, support, preparation and work.

IDENTIFY A ROLE MODEL

Who has confidence that you admire?

It might be a work colleague, lecturer, a family member or friend. What do they say, how do they move, how do they speak? When something goes wrong, how do they react? Speak with them to understand more about how they think and what motivates them.

■ Maintain eye contact. This shows that you're paying attention to what the other person is saying.

■ Don’t fidget or look away. This will make you appear distracted or anxious.

■ Sit up straight. When we are nervous, we slouch, hunch our shoulders, and lower our heads to make ourselves appear smaller.

Simply sitting up straight can help you feel and look more confident.

Self-confidence doesn’t always come easily and doubt can still creep in.

■ Stand up tall. This will help you breathe more freely but it also makes you look and feel more confident.

Working in a male dominated industry can be intimidating but often the guys are lacking in confidence too. Talk to each other, share your experiences, look out for each other.

We all have the same goals.

■ Speak slowly and clearly. Rushing what you’re saying or speaking quietly can make you sound unsure. Taking your time will make you feel calmer.

Remember – the more you practise these techniques the more natural they will feel.

HOT WATER CYLINDERS: THE BASICS There are a wide range of cylinders on the market today, but when it comes to selecting the right one, a number of factors need to be considered. Here, the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors (APHC), explains some of the basic differences.

TYPES OF HOT WATER STORAGE CYLINDERS

WHAT TO CONSIDER

There are essentially two types of cylinder: Direct and Indirect.

The following requirements need to be understood prior to installation: ■ Quantity of hot water required ■ Temperature required at outlets and the temperature of stored water ■ Cost of installation and maintenance ■ Fuel energy requirements ■ Wastage of water and energy running costs ■ User safety: such as scalding water, over pressurisation and legionella bacteria

DIRECT

This is a hot water storage cylinder which has a large open space inside it. They should only be used in a hot water system where the components are not subject to corrosion by fresh water. They’re therefore not suitable to be installed in combined heating and hot water systems where there is a range of metallic materials such as steel (radiators) which corrode in the presence of fresh water. They tend to be used in modern systems when the hot water is heated by electricity (immersion heaters).

INDIRECT

This type of hot water storage cylinder includes a coil inside it. The coil is used to transfer heat from a boiler or heat pump circuit, keeping the fresh water to be heated in the cylinder and distributed to the taps, completely separate from the heated water supply from the boiler or heat pump circuit.

FURTHER OPTIONS TO CONSIDER

Hot water storage cylinders are either vented or unvented (mains fed).

Below are some advantages and disadvantages of each.

OPEN VENTED

Traditionally in the UK, hot water systems were of the open vented type, although unvented hot water storage systems have become more popular.

An open vented hot water storage system is fed from a cold water storage cistern.

ADVANTAGES

■ Simple and cost effective to install ■ Limited mechanical parts so relatively maintenance free ■ Can be useful where there is low incoming cold water mains flow rate and pressure to a property

DISADVANTAGES

■ Can be difficult to site the storage cistern ■ The water flow rate from the taps outlets is determined by the head of water generated by the storage cistern and tends to be low ■ The cistern is often sited in the loft space and can be prone to freezing in winter

Make sure you fully understand the needs of your customer prior to any installation.

UNVENTED (MAINS FED)

An unvented hot water storage system is mains fed without the need for a cold water storage cistern.

The system is required to include a range of mechanical control devices to limit the water temperature in the cylinder from overheating which could lead to a serious explosion without their correct application and installation. The cylinder requires the installation of a relief pipe which must be carefully sited to warn of a fault occurring within the system.

ADVANTAGES

■ Provides high water flow rate at taps and showers which many customers prefer ■ Can be easier to site than open vented systems (there are limitations due to the requirements for safely siting the relief pipe) ■ Removes the need for a cistern which is often fitted in a loft space

DISADVANTAGES

■ Can be expensive to install ■ Includes mechanical components which are more prone to failure and requires regular servicing ■ Not suited to properties with low flow rate/low pressure supplies without additional and costly components being installed

One of the main points that needs to be considered when fitting any type of hot water cylinder is that it’s defined as a ‘controlled service or fitting’ under Building Regulations.

This requires the installation to be notified to building control prior to the work taking place, or selfcertified by a company registered with a competent persons scheme.

WHY SO MANY SAFETY DEVICES? Paul Millard, Technical Manager at Water Regs UK shares technical insights relating to the regulations around installing unvented hot water cylinders.

nstallers are responsible for ensuring compliance with the Water Fittings Regulations or Scottish Byelaws. One of the key requirements for hot water cylinders (Schedule 2 paragraph 17-24) is ensuring it is maintained below 100°C.

VENTED CYLINDERS

For gravity-fed cylinders this is achieved with an open vent, which is placed over the cold-water storage cistern which feeds it.

UNVENTED CYLINDERS

Mains fed cylinders, termed ‘unvented’, pose a greater risk. They are maintained under mains pressure and can provide the conditions for water to flash to steam.

The regulations, therefore, require these cylinders to be installed using a number of additional safety features.

SAFETY DEVICES

On the cold mains feed there must be a pressure-reducing valve and an expansion valve. The heated, expanded water must be accommodated within an expansion vessel. Usually this is built into the top of the cylinder or provided separately on the hot water outlet.

There must also be a thermal energy cut out to stop the heat source in case the thermostat fails. Temperature and pressure relief valves are also required.

When activated, these valves allow cold water to be drawn into the cylinder which helps reduce the temperature.

IN SUMMARY

Maintaining the cylinder below 100°C is not just about avoiding a scalding risk, it is the point water turns to steam. When this happens, the expansion ratio is approximately 1:1700 and can occur almost instantaneously in the right conditions. If the whole cylinder were to flash to steam this would have devastating consequences.
