RAISE YOUR BARS WITH RHINO Rhino products are a leading manufacturer of commercial vehicle accessories that are built to last, including roof racks, roof bars, rear steps and an extensive range of accessories, and their latest evolution in roof bar design - KammBar™ - is no exception. KammBar can be fitted to all of Europe’s leading commercial vehicles and has been developed using the latest technologies in design and manufacturing.

Inspired by the work of Professor Wunibald Kamm, Rhino has produced one of the most aerodynamic roof bar profiles to date.

But the advanced aerodynamics don’t stop with the bar design: Rhino have also developed an aerodynamic load stop to work in conjunction with the KammBar™. Two pairs of load stops are supplied with KammBar™ systems.

The KammBar™ provides a great combination of strength and practicality – just what you need for a full day on the tools. Manufactured from anodised aluminium, its anti-corrosive finish will assist preventing all of that nasty rusting and weathering. It is lightweight yet extremely strong: the KammBar™ is now tested to carry a 75kg payload instead of the previous load of 50kg per bar. With it's aerodynamic-shaped bar, load stops and pre-assembled legs, KammBar™ is quick and easy to fit so that you can crack on with all of the plumbing jobs in your diary.

PipeTube Rhino haven’t stopped there, however. They have also developed the PipeTube product that works perfectly with the Kammbar. This Pipe Tube incorporates strength, style and security to provide the best method of transporting copper pipe, conduit or similarly lengthy materials. It combines a steel bulkhead for strength and a plastic nose cone to improve aerodynamic efficiency. It’s available in 2 and 3 metre lengths and is key lockable at both ends, so you can have that peace of mind. Mighty and reliable, it allows transportation of up to 50x15mm copper tubes or similar materials.  Visit rhinoproducts.co.uk

HIP MAGAZINE | WINTER ISSUE 2018 | INTERVIEW

MEET CHARLIE MULLINS We caught up with Charlie Mullins, previous apprentice and founder of the UK’s largest independent plumbing company, Pimlico Plumbers. HIP: What attracted you to a career in the plumbing and heating industry? CM: When I was I kid, quite young, about ten-years-old I used to bunk off school to help a local plumber called Bill. I thought Bill was great, and not just because he used to pay me two-bob a day to tag along with him. He was pretty much my hero; he had a car, a motorbike, and went on holidays, which nobody round our way could afford to do. HIP: Did you do an apprenticeship and if so, where did you do it? CM: I absolutely did an apprenticeship, which is why I tell all young people I meet to seriously consider one for themselves. I started mine with a company called AngloScottish Construction out of Raynes Park, and transferred two years in to Higgs and Hill, based at Loughborough Junction.

HIP: How long did it take you to get to management level? CM: You could say I was management material from day one, but some of my old mentors might have disagreed with that! Obviously as a self-employed plumber I was my own boss, and within a year I had a couple of people working for me, so pretty much straight away. If the question means when did I stop getting my hands dirty? Then we’re talking about the mid-80s, maybe a little later, so about 10 years after I finished my apprenticeship.

HIP: Where did you work after you became fully qualified?

HIP: How would you describe Pimlico Plumbers to someone who has not come across your business before?

CM: The moment I finished my apprenticeship I was always going to work for myself, so it was with a bag of old tools and a second hand van, I became my own boss and it’s been that way ever since.

CM: Pimlico Plumbers is London’s premier plumbing, heating and home service company. We are all about service. We have the best technical people and the best backup service possible, but we’re always looking to improve.

We are the trade-based service company that bucks the trend by looking at all the things that the public historically don’t like about our industry and consciously strive to do the opposite. We pride ourselves in being honest, hard-working, reliable and transparent. Quite honestly we are the company that is the gold standard, when it comes to anything that needs doing in someone’s home or business place. HIP: What has been the biggest challenge that you have faced? CM: In the early 1990s we almost went broke. Two experts told me that I was

13

probably finished and would go under. One said we could go bust and be up and running again the next week under a new name and the other one said I could fight, but would probably still lose. I decided to fight and I won. It took all my energy to stay afloat, and after that I did some major re-structuring, which was the basis for the business model that today’s Pimlico Plumbers is based on.

HIP: What has been your biggest career highlight so far? CM: Going to Buckingham Palace to receive my OBE from Prince Charles, especially since I was the first person to be recognised in this way for ‘services to plumbing’ since Thomas Crapper.

HIP: What advice would you give to any students who would like to pursue a similar career path? CM: Go with your instincts; by all means listen to what other people’s advice might be, but it’s your head on the block, not theirs, so if you think you’re right, back yourself. Also, if you are considering starting a business, just do it. Plenty of people do a lot of talking and not enough doing; take a chance, it may be the best thing you’ll ever do. And if you don’t, you’ll never know!

HIP: What is your favourite thing about the plumbing and heating industry? CM: Once you’re qualified, you’ve got a job for life. And in this day and age there’s not too many jobs like that. Houses will always need water while humans live in them, so the technology might get more complicated, but you still need pipes to carry water.

HIP: Why do you take on apprentices? CM: Two reasons: the first is an economic one; if nobody trains up apprentices there will be no tradespeople in the future to fuel the economy. Our skills gap in the UK is bad enough and we must get rid of it. The second reason is that I was an apprentice and it has given me such a wonderful life. I wasn’t rich, in fact I came from a very poor

...if you are considering starting a business, just do it...it may be the best thing you’ll ever do. background, and I see lots of kids out there with no idea what they want to do. Many of them don’t think they have a chance of getting a house, or having a nice life that doesn’t involve being miserable and living on benefits. But making apprenticeships available to young people is my way of helping kids like the one I used to be. HIP: How have you found the process of recruiting apprentices? CM: People make too much fuss about this type of thing; there are plenty of young people who are looking for apprenticeships. We have hundreds every months asking about, and applying for apprenticeships. The secret is to find the ones that really want it, and are not being pressured by their parents. I will preach about the good that apprenticeships do for hours if people let me, but it’s three years of hard graft, and if you’re not prepared, you won’t last.

turnover in the 100s of millions of pounds. HIP: What do you think about the way plumbers are now using social media? CM: Undoubtedly social media is a great business tool and plumbers are business people, just like any other. So if they need to promote their businesses then social media, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc. are great ways to do this. I use social media to huge effect for Pimlico Plumbers, and there are others who do the same. I do however think that just like people who work in non-plumbing areas of my business, plumbers who are being paid by customers on an hourly rate should not be on social media while they are on the clock. HIP: If you had to describe yourself in three words, what they be? CM: Blunt, determined and fair. HIP: What couldn’t you live without? CM: My mobile phone.

HIP: What lies ahead in the future for Pimlico Plumbers?

HIP: What is your favourite number plate out of your whole collection?

CM: This year we have 350 people on board and we will hit £40 million in sales for the first time. The next target is £50 million, then £100m, and on and on. Rapid growth is what we’re going to be about for the next, well, at least 10 years, by which time we plan to be counting

CM: It could be my personal plate CH4RLE, which has pride of place on my Bentley, but actually it’s the first one I ever bought, which is DRA1N. It cost me £6k in 1988, and I had sleepless nights worrying if that was a good move. Six grand was a lot of money back then!

REDUCE PROBLEMS WITH

RETROFIT Magnetite makes up more than 98% of all system debris, making it the single biggest cause of heating system issues.

Due to their incredibly small size, magnetite particles travel easily around a heating system and deposit in low flow areas. Regardless of age, magnetite will always eventually become a problem for a boiler and household heating system, unless it’s properly maintained and protected against corrosion.

Survey findings When ADEY commissioned a survey of 2,000 UK homeowners, we found that more than a third of respondents said they currently have issues with their central heating systems including noisy pipework, cold spots in radiators and

...installing a filter should be considered best practice...

low or inconsistent heat levels. All of these common issues are symptoms of a build-up of sludge within the system and the corrosion of components. The most effective remedy is for an installer to fit a magnetic filter, providing long-term protection and preventing future sludge-related breakdowns, associated costs and inconvenience for the homeowner. However, we understand that when a system needs repairing, it’s usually an unplanned distress purchase for the customer and this can make it difficult for an installer to feel comfortable in recommending a fix that, although beneficial, comes at further additional cost.

Therefore, ADEY supports installers with material they can use to help educate customers on the benefits of having a well-maintained system and the return on investment that long-term protection can deliver.

Filters For example, should an installer need to replace any heating system components,

it makes sense to ensure new parts are protected from future corrosion, which means installing a filter should be considered best practice as much as it is when installing a whole new boiler. In addition, our filters are the only ones available on the market that hold a complete product 10-year warranty and save 6% on household energy bills year on year.  Visit adey.com

VAILLANT CASE STUDY: GRIMSBY COLLEGE Louise Simpson, Vaillant Customer Journey Manager, and lecturer Steven Hilton comment on the Experience Day Training provided to Grimsby College by Vaillant. The Experience Day held by Vaillant Group at the Belper Centre was very relevant to the learners’ development. The experience they had by attending the Centre not only promoted the need for manufacturer’s training to enhance their learning and knowledge, but also the need to keep ahead of the current and new products there are available in the market. Vaillant takes pride in showcasing their products not only at external exhibitions but also at their own Centres of Excellence. Grimsby learners that attended their Experience Day are all welcome to attend any events local to them, which Vaillant encourage.

The future The learners are keen to stay ahead of what’s going on in the industry that they are working towards becoming a fundamental part of. Understanding what is ahead of them is key, as is having a knowledge of what products are available to them for their future careers.

The students and tutors expressed how vital it is to have a handson training approach, which they experienced during their visit to the Belper Centre.

Vaillant Group Training are continuing to support the Grimsby learners, by either attending the college or running a Product Course at a Centre of Excellence with a smaller group, giving them the overall confidence to work on Vaillant products from a technical perspective. This is something that will benefit both parties going forward.

HELPING CUSTOMERS MAKE THE SMART CHOICE Smart and connected technology is a rapidly growing area of the industry and will become more commonplace with increasing recognition of the benefits for homeowners. A key benefit of smart technology is convenience for the homeowner. For example, smart heating controls, such as the Nest thermostat, will learn and then begin to predict behaviour. Here Anthony Chapman, Senior Category Manager for Plumbing at Graham Plumbers’ Merchant, looks at what installers need to know and the opportunities that the technology can provide.

The system monitors the homeowner’s initial adjustments to the thermostat and learns the desired temperatures and routines. Relatively quickly the thermostat can begin to anticipate the needs of the household.

Energy savings Traditional heating controls often make it difficult for the user to get the temperature right and thermostats are frequently adjusted to manage the temperature, resulting in energy being wasted. A thermostat with the ability to learn and predict the required temperatures provides a greater level of heating efficiency and as a result can reduce heating bills of up to 16%. The energy saving benefits of smart controls have recently been recognised by the Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Under the new Boiler Plus regulations, from April 2018 any new combination boiler installed in England will also need to feature an energy saving technology. One of the ways to meet this requirement is to install a smart control that includes automation and optimisation functions.

...the devices are more affordable than customers often assume. savings on energy bills covers the initial cost in as little as 12 to 18 months. Beyond this point customers are simply better off while enjoying a more comfortable environment with a heating system that is easier to manage. Smart heating controls are just one part of a wider range of home automation and connected products that are simple to install and easy to use. This provides installers with an added opportunity to expand their services to customers. Installers that are informed and knowledgeable about areas such as smart lighting and security can offer an integrated solution that goes beyond heating controls.

Cost effective Furthermore, this reduction in energy usage means the devices are more affordable than customers often assume. Although smart controls are more expensive than a traditional programmable thermostat, the

IMPEY’S EASYFIT WETROOM FLOOR-FORMER TURNS FIVE In 2012 Impey launched the EasyFit wetroom floor-former. Five years on, the revolutionary floor-former has changed the way that wetrooms are built, specified and installed. To celebrate the fifth anniversary of EasyFit’s launch, Impey has released a new installation video, which reveals exactly why their revolutionary floor-former is the go-to wetroom drainage solution for the UK’s installers.

During the wetroom installation process, lifting the floor can reveal a multitude of complications: double joists, gas pipes, electrical cables and other unexpected obstacles which can hinder wetroom installations of floor-formers with a fixedposition waste. When Impey released the EasyFit floor-former five years ago, installers realised that they no longer needed to worry about unexpected obstacles lurking underneath the floorboards!

Impey’s popular EasyFit wetroom floor former incorporates a unique rotating drainplate, which can be simply manipulated in a circular motion to find the most convenient position for the waste and instantly avoid any problematic pipes or jauntily located joists; typically saving at least half a day of installation time.

The EasyFit floor-former is well-known for its strength and rigidity. At 22mm thick, it is conveniently the same depth of most standard floor boards and designed to be placed straight onto joists – easily withstanding weights of 300kg (47 stones), with no need for underboarding.

Training tour To find out more about EasyFit and installing a wetroom, you can book a place on Impey’s ‘We Are Wetrooms’ Training Tour, which will visit nine sporting venues during 2018. Visit: www.impeyshowers.com/training to reserve your space.  Lastly, don’t forget to take a peek at Impey’s brand-new installation video, which can be viewed at: impeyshowers.com/EasyFit. HOT WATER & WATER HEATERS Mike Harvey, training & technical support manager at HETAS, discusses the options available when it comes to hot water and water heaters.

“When considering domestic hot water provision a variety of options are available,” he said. “Installers usually opt for a gas or electric appliance sized to meet their customers’ requirements, based on what they are most familiar with, ease of use and confidence in installation practice. The appliance is either cited as a direct water heater under a sink or indirect, integrated into a kitchen cupboard or hidden from view in an airing cupboard or roof space. “In recent years, wood burning stoves have enjoyed a renaissance and today’s modern appliances are available to fulfil the requirements for domestic hot water.

In recent years, wood burning stoves have enjoyed a renaissance... Skills gap "However, there is a skills gap that exists in how to install such appliances either as the primary heat source or as a linked-in technology to an existing gas or oil boiler. Skills and training which was once part of the curriculum for Plumbing & Heating Apprentices was dropped in the early 1990’s, creating a gap in knowledge for generations of installers who are now faced with the challenge of learning how to meet the growing requests of homeowners.

“HETAS has developed a comprehensive programme of training courses for solid fuel, wood and biomass installations for installers to build on their existing skills set and bridge the skills gap in the industry.

"Specifically, the combination of Dry and Wet Appliance Installer Courses H003 &

H004 delivered by highly skilled industry specific trainers at HETAS Approved Training Centres covers core theory and practical considerations for installations. The course provides information on linking the technologies including unvented systems as well as service and maintenance and regulatory requirements. The course also stresses the importance of using appropriate fuels including ‘Ready to Burn’ wood for more efficient home heating which helps improve air quality.”

In contrast, cylinders store hot water, so can handle multiple uses of hot water at the same time, without any loss of pressure or temperature. What do plumbing students need to know about this issue? AO: There’s a simple question I’d encourage all plumbing students to ask: “Is this hot water system capable of meeting the demands it could face?” If the answer is “no”, it’s an opportunity to advise your customer to upgrade their heating

How do we know that more than 25% of householders are unhappy with their hot water pressure? Andrew Ogden (AO): It’s the result of research from the Hot Water Association (HWA). They surveyed more than 300 householders in new-build homes; 26% of respondents said they lost hot water pressure when they used more than one hot water outlet at the same time. It seems ridiculous so many homes can’t cope with using hot water in this way. Fortunately, it’s really easy to resolve, no matter the age of a property. Why is there a loss of hot water pressure? HOW SMART PHONES WILL CHANGE THE TRADE INDUSTRY Benjamin Dyer of Powered Now explains why the arrival of the smartphone means life is becoming easier for Heating and Plumbing professionals. About the author Benjamin Dyer is CEO and co-founder of Powered Now. Powered Now’s mobile app aims to take the pain out of paperwork for plumbers, gas engineers and other trade businesses.

 Visit powerednow.com

The first iPhone arrived at the Apple Macworld Conference in San Francisco in 2007. Dismissed by Microsoft (try Googling: “Bullmer laughs at iPhone”), today the majority of trade professionals carry an iPhone or Android device.

Technological impact Long term, technology drives social change. Our ancestors mostly worked on the land, but technology has changed all that. The smartphone is the fastest adopted device in the world’s history and is going to change things too.

Impact on Heating and Plumbing Engineers Helping with paperwork is likely to be the main use for smartphones. Powered Now has a smartphone app (also available on Mac, PC and tablet) and like similar systems delivers the following benefits:  Quote and invoice professional-looking documents from anywhere and send by email and text  Look up customer addresses and details from the postcode and company name  Look up email addresses and phone numbers from your address book  Know exactly when your prospect has opened your emails  Know exactly where all your staff are throughout the working day Overall, this makes creating paperwork much quicker and easier than it can ever be with paper, Word or Excel.

What’s the bottom line? Everyone hates paperwork and smaller companies are worst hit as they often don’t have an admin person. Smartphones are good news because they can make things easier. Why not check it out?

WATER TREATMENT MAINTENANCE STEP-BY-STEP

1

To protect boilers and system components from corrosion and limescale for life, carry out the following water treatment maintenance steps after dosing a system with inhibitor and at every annual boiler service. WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO MAINTAIN WATER TREATMENT:

1. An inhibitor quick test kit (comprising clear tube, tablets, and colour chart),

such as Sentinel X100 Quick Test Kit

2. A bottle of inhibitor, such as Sentinel X100 Inhibitor, to top the system

up (if necessary).

 For further information visit sentinelprotects.com

Clean the filter, if present. Start by closing both isolation valves. For Vortex filters, withdraw the magnet, unscrew the cap on the flush valve, and place on the valve handle. Put a container under the valve to catch dirty water or attach a suitable hose. Turn the flush valve 90o to release the collected debris. Dirt will start to flow out. The bottom isolation valve can then be opened temporarily halfway to thoroughly flush the filter out.

2

3

4

Once clean, close the flush valve. Show the householder the collected debris.

Allow inhibitor to circulate in the system for min. 15 minutes and let system cool. From a drain point run system water for a few seconds and then fill sample tube provided in the kit.

Place both tablets (marked 1 and 2) into the sample tube, seal the tube and shake vigorously. Allow tube to stand but shake occasionally until tablets are fully dissolved (up to 10 minutes).

6

7

Add more inhibitor to the system, circulate it for 15 minutes, then repeat the test.

Show the homeowner the shade chart and water sample to prove that the system is protected. You’re done!

To finish, replace the cap, insert the magnet, and re-open both isolation valves.

5

Once the tablets have dissolved, place the tube against the white part of the shade chart. If the sample colour appears deeper or the same depth as the ‘Standard yellow’ shown, the concentration of inhibitor is okay (and you can skip step 6). If it is lighter, inhibitor concentration is too low, and you will need to move to step 6.

While waiting for the results, investigate the cause of the depleted inhibitor levels and, if necessary, organise remedial works to be carried out.

HIP MAGAZINE | WINTER ISSUE 2018 | FEATURE

CLEAN, POWERFLUSH AND PROTECT Francine Wickham, Global Marketing Director at Fernox explains a simple three-step approach to restoring energy efficiency within a dirty central heating system.

All domestic central heating systems precommissioned in line with Part L of the Building Regulations should be protected against corrosion and scale formation by using effective chemical water treatment. This is achieved by removing installation debris, fluxes and solder residues with a cleaner and then protecting the system against future corrosion and scale formation with a quality inhibitor.

An inhibitor works to prevent sludge and scale build-up by forming a protective barrier between the metal and water in the system, minimising contact and subsequently reducing electrolytic corrosion.

Treating older systems

However, for older systems that have not had inhibitor levels maintained over time, the levels of inhibitor can reduce through part drain downs and consequently, the barrier can become inconsistent. When this situation occurs, system water that comes into contact with the metals within the heating system causes a chemical reaction called corrosion. This produces thick black sludge (mostly iron oxide) that can circulate within the central heating system; blocking radiators and pipework and forcing a boiler to work harder than necessary to get the system to reach temperature. This not only increases the amount of energy the boiler has to use but circulating debris can also cause

internal damage to the boiler itself, resulting in breakdown and early replacement.

When approaching a system suffering from dirty water and circulating sludge, follow these three steps:

Fernox Protector F1 combines three types of protective inhibitor particles

 Step One Dose the system with an effective, nonfoaming chemical cleaner, such as Fernox Cleaner F3 and let it circulate for at least one hour. Fernox Cleaners chemically lift and disperse dirt for faster removal. Cleaners which foam trap air, have reduced cleaning ability and can also cause frothing and whistling in modern, high-flow systems.

Also, by using both Fernox Cleaner F3 and Fernox Protector F1 to clean and inhibit a system, gas savings of up to 15% can be achieved every time a room is heated.

 Step Two Powerflush the system to remove both the cleaner and sludge. Powerflushing is more effective than any other cleaning method (as detailed in BS7593) and will result in a system free of sludge and corrosion particles.

 Step Three Once a central heating system is clean, it is essential to dose it with a high quality inhibitor to protect the metal from future corrosion. Fernox Protector F1 combines three types of protective inhibitor particles that each form a barrier to stop the system water touching the metal.

A dirty central heating system can increase running costs and result in boiler breakdown. By correctly cleaning, powerflushing and dosing the system with high quality chemical water treatment, a system’s energy efficiency can be restored and maintained.

WATER SOFTENERS... TAKING ON LIMESCALE ACROSS THE UK More than 60% of the UK suffers from hard water. If you live in a hard water area you will experience limescale build up in appliances and around taps and you will see stains in sinks and baths. A water softener is connected to the plumbing system. It is usually installed where the water supply comes in, to ensure all parts of the home benefit from softened water. Often this is the kitchen.

Why use ion exchange water softeners? A water softener from a leading manufacturer like Tapworks tackles the problem of hard water by eliminating the unsightly calcium and magnesium minerals from the mains water. The (salt-based) ion exchange technology is the only reliable technology that is affordable for residential use.

Why choose a computercontrolled softener? Just as makes of cars are different, water softeners from all manufacturers are different. For example, no two water softener brands have the same salt and water consumption. A computer-controlled softener can automatically adapt to a home’s water consumption pattern, and

You wouldn’t consider buying a non-electronic dishwasher or washing machine these days, so it clearly makes sense to buy an electronic water softener. All Tapworks softeners are computercontrolled, simple in use, and very economic.

The water usage in a home – roughly 160 litres per person per day – will determine which size of softener would be optimal. Brands offering a range of sizes allow you to choose the most efficient unit for the given situation.

CONFESSIONS OF A LECTURER… “

“I was saying goodbye to a student and thanking him for his hard work over the past few years. Student: Thank you. You’re the best teacher I’ve ever had. Teacher: Aww, that’s really kind, thanks. Student: You’re always so grumpy and miserable that it really motivates you to qualify and get out of here. I see what you did there – it’s clever.”

Student: Miss I haven’t got my boots today (no boots means no entry to the workshop). Teacher: Again? This is happening too often and you are missing out on your practical sessions. What’s the excuse this time? Student: I stood on my dad’s puffer fish and one of its spikes has gone into my foot, look (student shows a very swollen foot with spike in). Turns out his dad had brought a stuffed puffer fish back from holiday! And the student had an argument with it!”

As a plumbing lecturer I enjoy maintenance / fault finding sessions, as I set faults on valves and appliances just like the students will come across in real life. More often than not the student is likely to get wet! The severity of wetness depends on the student’s past behaviour. Revenge is sweet!”
