Single hand operation is made easy by using the thumb adjustment button. With black finish, these slip joint pliers are manufactured with anti-corrosion treated, high alloy steel with hardened jaws. And because they fit the user’s hand so well, with excellent grip, they protect even the toughest hands from the risk of painful muscle strain or injury. Every time you grip any hand tool you activate no fewer than 42 different muscles in your hand and wrist. According to the UK’s Health & Safety Executive, musculo-skeletal disorders, or MSDs, are the biggest cause of trade professionals taking time off work. So it makes good sense always to choose ergonomic tools, which were pioneered by Bahco.

At our birthday celebration on the second day all of we also hosted some previous sponsors and the competition’s winners of the last two years – 'Lookseatprizes!' tho Jack Miller (2016) and Tayla Wileman (2017). Our sponsors donated some incredible prizes – over £9000 worth, in fact – so there was even more incentive for the competitors to win. The standard of work made marking extremely difficult for our judges, so well done to each and every finalist. If all of this has sparked your interest and you’d like to enter next year, then keep an eye on our website, Twitter and Facebook to stay posted on how you can enter the 2019 competition. PROTECT AGAINST REPEAT REPAIRS Magnetite makes up more than 98% of all system debris, making it the single biggest threat to heating system performance. Dr Neil Watson, Global Technical Director at ADEY, explains why installers should consider the installation of a proven magnetic filter a ‘must have’ on all sludge-related repair jobs and not just a ‘nice-to-have’.

Small particles, big problem Magnetite particles are incredibly small and travel easily around a heating system. They commonly deposit as sludge in low flow areas such as heat exchangers, base boards and radiators, cause erosion in turbulent areas and clog up pumps.

For any boiler and household heating system, regardless of age, magnetite will always eventually become a problem unless effective steps are taken to guard against it.

With most boiler or heating system issues likely to be sludge-related, recent research undertaken by ADEY found that just 13% of installers recommend fitting a magnetic filter when they’re called out to a repair job. In comparison, this rises to 83% of installers when they’re fitting a new boiler.

The most effective remedy is for an installer to fit a magnetic filter... Systems at risk ADEY’s magnetic filters are currently fitted in more than four million homes. Potentially, this leaves almost 20 million household heating systems unprotected and at risk from the damaging effects of magnetite. In a survey of 2,000 UK homeowners, more than a third of respondents said they currently have issues with their central heating systems including noisy pipework, cold spots in radiators and low or inconsistent heat levels. All of these common issues are symptoms of a build-up of sludge within the system and the corrosion of components. The most

effective remedy is for an installer to fit a magnetic filter, providing long-term protection and preventing future sludgerelated breakdowns, associated costs and inconvenience for the homeowner. However, we understand that when a system needs repairing, it’s usually an unplanned distress purchase for the customer and this can make it difficult for an installer to feel comfortable in recommending a fix that, although beneficial, comes at further additional cost. This is why we provide support for installers such as information they can use to help educate customers on the benefits of having a wellmaintained system and the return on investment that longterm protection can deliver.

2018 WINNER! We spoke to the 2018 HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year straight after his name was announced at the Grand Final. Anthony Iacovazzo from City College Norwich kept his cool and managed to complete the entire task in the tight time frame of twelve hours that he was given. We wanted to find out how it felt to be the overall winner of such a close and difficult competition. HIP: How does it feel to be a winner of a UK competition? AI: I thought I was dreaming at first. The quality of the other lads’ work was unreal. I knew it would be close but I didn’t think I’d get it! HIP: What made you think about entering? Is this the first skills competition you’ve entered? AI: I entered the Carter Cup at the Norfolk Showground which I won. All the tutors at college put me forward for them. HIP: How did you cope with completing the task in the given time over two days? AI: It was very tight. I was almost rushing it but I managed to get it done just in time.

UK COMPETITION | SUMMER ISSUE 2018 | HIP MAGAZINE

HIP: How did you get on with the other contestants? AI: They were nice. I didn’t speak to them much but they seemed friendly. HIP: Who are you going to call first to let them know you have won? AI: My mum or my girlfriend – I need to decide! HIP: What has been the best part of the competition overall? AI: Lunchtime after completing the task…but also winning! HIP: And what has been the worst? AI: Getting one of the main 22mm bends wrong. HIP: Do you think you’ll be using more of the products that you used today in the future? AI: I like the Magnaclean because they’re nice and easy to fit. The Mira Showers shower was great and Stelrad radiators are the best to fit. HIP: What attracted you to a career in the plumbing and heating industry? AI: I was mostly attracted to it because it was decent money and I’d spent years on a sports course but the job I got afterwards didn’t pay very well. I didn’t want to do the job I was doing for the rest of my life so I did a plumbing course and I’ve never looked back since. HIP: What’s your least favourite thing about the industry? AI: Having to go in a ridiculously tight loft.

HIP: What’s the main thing that you’ll take away from the whole competition experience? AI: I’ll always keep my standard of work high now I’ve got the reputation for it.

I didn’t want to do the job I was doing for the rest of my life so I did a plumbing course and I’ve never looked back since.

WHEN THE LECTURERS MET THE MANUFACTURERS! Every year HIP Magazine runs a CPD day for lecturers across the UK, where they are given the chance to discuss and see first hand the latest products available for plumbing and heating engineers. In turn, the best manufacturers around are given a unique opportunity to interact with the brand ambassadors teaching their future clientele. It’s a win-win situation! These Meet The Lecturer presentations take place whilst our student competitors are knuckling down in their bays in the annual HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year Competition. This year certainly did not disappoint, as it featured an array of interactive demonstrations, product showcases and free goodies.

Here are the manufacturers who took part and joined us in seven different regions across the UK

KNIPEX: PLIERS YOU CAN RELY ON Your pliers are a crucial part of your tool bag and should be chosen on quality, powerful performance and user comfort, explains Alex Garami of KNIPEX. As an apprentice you are now learning the essential skills of your trade. It’s an exciting time and as you move from working in the classroom to working on site, the tools and equipment you choose will become even more important to you.

Choosing the right tools That’s especially true of your pliers, which you will need to powerfully grip, cut and nip pipes, nuts and valves on a regular basis, so getting the choice right will help ensure you work comfortably and safely with tools you can rely on. With professional users like you in mind we seek to find innovative solutions that enable plumbing and heating engineers to get their work done more easily, quickly and safely. For instance, the KNIPEX Cobra range of water pump pliers are substantially lighter than comparable pipe wrenches. They have enormous gripping capacity and are available in various lengths from 125mm to 560mm.

KNIPEX Cobra pliers The KNIPEX Cobra pliers are self-locking and will not slip on the pipe, nut or joint being worked on, meaning there is no time consuming trial and error to find the correct setup of the pliers. All versions of the Cobra can be directly adjusted on the piece you are

KNIPEX Cobra pliers are self-locking and will not slip on the pipe, nut or joint... working on – simply position the upper jaw on the item, push the button and slide the lower jaw closed. The reliable catching mechanism of the hinge bolt prevents unintentional shifting. The teeth on all Cobra models are specially hardened during manufacture to approximately 61 HRC, so the firm grip is extremely long-lasting. In addition, there’s an anti-pinch mechanism on the handle. The smaller length Cobra pliers are pocketsized all-rounders with lengths of 125mm, 150mm and 180mm. The Cobra models with lengths of 250mm and 300mm have

considerable gripping capacity while being easily manageable and the perfect size to offer excellent accessibility to the workpiece. The larger Cobra 400mm and 560mm XL and XXL sizes offer gripping widths up to 4½".

Full range To complete the KNIPEX Cobra range, the company has added the Cobra QuickSet (250mm and 300mm length). When the user opens the QuickSet completely and places the upper jaw on the workpiece, the lower handle can be pushed to adjust, making this very practical where space is tight.  For more details on the KNIPEX range visit knipex.com

WEAR YOUR OWN CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM: TOP TIPS FROM SNICKERS WORKWEAR We’re all looking forward to sunny, warm weather this year. As long as you’ve got plenty of sunscreen to protect exposed skin, it’ll produce a great tan, but it can also add to the health and safety issues onsite by creating an extra hazard for personal wellbeing. So dressing right for the environment you’re grafting in is important – not only for working efficiency, but also for personal comfort and wellbeing. The best workwear for professional tradespeople is designed to create a Climate Control System for your body and that’s what Snickers does. It will help you stay cool to make getting the job done as easy and comfortable as possible. There are many factors that affect how comfortable your work clothes and safety shoes are, including the materials they're made of and whether they're right for the type of work you’re doing.

Your Feet If you’re on the move a lot or want to keep your feet cool, why not try out some of the latest Solid Gear safety trainers that combine lightweight, breathable uppers and composite midsoles for comfort and protection. You can even get socks that will keep your feet cool, dry and ventilated.

Your Legs Shorts are fine in really warm weather and some working environments, but they won't provide protection for your knees and lower legs. Work Trousers made from heavy fabrics will get really uncomfortable and impractical, so think about getting yourself a pair of lightweight work trousers made from a hi-tech fabric that combines comfort with durability.

Your Upper Body Keeping comfortable and dry will keep you working efficiently. Snickers advise that you get yourself topwear like shirts and lightweight jackets – including Hi-Vis vests - that work for you by pulling sweat away from your skin to keep you dry and your body temperature on an even keel. The last thing you need is for your clothes to get really wet through sweat, leaving you feeling uncomfortable and getting cold when the temperature drops.

dressing right for the environment you're grafting in is important...

GET THE RIGHT FIT To make sure that your working clothes fit your body and the jobs you’ve got in hand, here’s some basic advice:  Choose clothes that are not tight, but lightweight and comfortable.  Choose ‘Climate Control’ fabrics that work to take sweat away from your skin. 

In general, keep in mind that you don't want any clothing that gets in the way of the work you’re doing.

Don’t wear clothes that become uncomfortable and therefore affect your concentration. It’s important to stay alert and to pay attention to how you’re feeling when you’re working hard on a hot day.

ALL PROS, NO CONS

WITH TRITON’S T80 PRO-FIT ELECTRIC SHOWER Triton Showers has introduced the T80 Pro-Fit – the ultimate retrofit solution.

Taking on board both user and installer feedback, each feature and benefit incorporated into the T80 ProFit has been manufactured for ease of installation, whilst keeping your customer happy day after day. The end result is a product that you can rely on to meet the growing customer demand for retrofit shower solutions and replace almost any electric shower, whatever the brand or model, to a professional finish.

The problem solving Pro-Fit is suitable for use with push fit, copper or plastic pipe and compression fittings.

Connect Retrofit Featuring eight water and eight electric entry points, the T80 Pro-Fit (priced from around £99 RRP) makes any replacement easy. Thanks to the wider channels within the backplate, pipework can run alongside cable of up to 16mm. Carefully designed entry point trims can be put in position before or after the unit is fitted to the wall for a clean finish.

The problem solving Pro-Fit is suitable for use with push fit, copper or plastic pipe and compression fittings. Making installation even easier, the Swing-Fit™ terminal block and dual water inlet allows for left or right pipe and cable connections. For convenience, there’s also a nut and olive included in the box which is handy when re-using an existing compression set up. The T80 Pro-Fit can be commissioned in as little as 30 seconds. Centralised dials and a wire-less cover ensure an errorless fit.

Hard water ready The model also features Triton’s Dura-Flow™ heater which helps to reduce the build-up of limescale by up to 80%, maximising its flow and extending the life of the shower. This means the T80 Pro-Fit is particularly suitable for hard water areas. So when it comes to any replacement job, the only unit you need on your van each morning is Triton’s T80 Pro-Fit.

HIP MAGAZINE | SUMMER ISSUE 2018 | SPECIAL FEATURE

Nik Spencer is the founder and developer of the Home Energy Resources Unit (HERU), a worldfirst development in domestic and commercial heating. From animal bedding and agricultural contracting, municipal waste processing and even bedding for horses, Nik has established and sold numerous successful businesses and sat on the board of some of Britain’s biggest businesses.

WHAT IS THE HERU? “The HERU (the Home Energy Resources Unit) and its commercial sister (the CERU) are world-first solutions that take everyday resources (from nappies to food to cardboard to plastic) and use them to heat the water for a building. It does this through low-temperature pyrolysis (the decomposition of matter in the absence of oxygen).

“How this works is that a household would put a bag of resource in the HERU and it would be heated using a heat pipe to around 300°C, so not much higher than your conventional oven. The resource becomes char releasing tiny amounts of oil and gas, and we capture both. The HERU cleans the oil so it is safe to discharge and it utilises the gas that’s been produced for use in your domestic boiler.

“A single cycle of the HERU can produce between 72 litres/day of hot water at 41°C to 122 litres/day. Ultimately, it avoids the creation of waste and massively reduces the amount of carbon generated.”

What skills do you think the heating and plumbing sector will need in the future? “Having passion and first-rate engineering skills will always be important, but I also think having someone who is fully aware of the different options and new technologies gives customers great confidence. Our impact on the environment will only get more pronounced in the future, so having knowledge and caring about the environment would also be an advantage.” What tips would you give someone looking to branch out and create their own business? “My advice is actually very simple: do your research, understand your market and market conditions, make your offering simple but compelling, surround yourself with good quality people in every part of the business including suppliers and customers, do the paper work and remember the words “cash is king” and “the devil is in the detail.” Own that

credit control and be sure your terms of business are clear to your customers. Also ensure that you have a good accountant: a mistake I made when I was starting out was that I just went for a cheap accountant and ended up with cheap advice.” If someone dreams of running their own business, how do they make that leap? “Think of it more a step, not a leap. When you are starting the only thing holding you back is your own lack of confidence. If you decide what it is you want to achieve and you put your heart and mind into it, you will achieve it. It’s just a case of going through the hurdles and barriers. Start off nice and small with solid foundations for the business, like building a house, and then build upwards through business planning.”  Visit myheru.com

PRESS-FIT VALVES THAT SAVE YOU TIME & MONEY Every installer wants a faster method of fitting pipework and valves, but at the same time they still want to ensure precise and accurate flow regulation. A key feature of press fittings and valves is that hydraulic press tools simply "crimp" joints in copper tubes, resulting in a permanent, leak-free seal in just seconds. Indeed, because fitting press-fit valves is a completely dry activity, assembly can be carried out before crimping and there is virtually zero system downtime.

Efficient Time is obviously a key element of any installation and the beauty of easy-to-use press-fit valves is that installing them can take as little as 30 seconds.

This is partly down to the system being suitable for wet or dry conditions which makes installing substantially faster than when using soldering and grooves. Finally, because there is a mechanical joining system for copper tubing, labour and installation times are reduced.

A bright future So all-in-all, WRAS-approved press-fit valves are the future for a whole host of reasons and they have the potential to make a massive difference to the plumbing and heating sector, especially to those who install the original valve but also to those who may be carrying out maintenance or need to replace certain components in a system. So when you are working on a plumbing and heating system and soldered or threaded connections are being used, ask why and mention the press-fit valves way! They will thank you for saving them huge amounts of effort, time and money. With a reputation earned over 30 years, the carbon neutral certified Altecnic – part of the Caleffi group – is a UK provider of highquality plumbing and heating components and solutions.

WOMEN INSTALLERS TOGETHER CONFERENCE 2018 The second national conference for female plumbers and gas engineers is on 4th July in London. Why do Stopcocks Women Plumbers and other companies prioritise this event? Women make up just 1% of all plumbers, and Gas Safe estimate they have only 500 women on the register. In spite of most women finishing their courses with great grades they still seem to struggle harder to get placements and apprenticeships to complete their NVQ, something that appears to be an issue for many trainees.

Stopcocks was started by Hattie Hasan as a national franchise in response to almost weekly requests from female plumbers and trainees around the UK for help getting into the industry.

Hasan was very aware of the demand from customers; research by WaterSafe and YouGov showed that around 30% of customers would prefer to choose a female plumber or electrician, which supports this. She said: “As a plumber I hate leaks, but somehow the women were disappearing from the system. I was determined to create a solution. Making highly visible female role models who are running their own successful businesses on their own terms is what the Stopcocks franchise is all about.”

An exciting collaboration When Stopcocks launched as a franchise, several top companies approached Hasan to ask how they could support women in the industry and this is how the Women Installers Together Conference was born.

Several companies, including event partner Polypipe and Vaillant UK are supporting the event for a second time. New sponsors Graham Plumbers’ Merchant, Kier and Redrow are all actively seeking to increase the gender diversity of their workforce and to ‘show up’ in support of women in the industry.

This year we’re especially welcoming female trainees, so we look forward to meeting you at the event.  Grab your free tickets by visiting 2018witconference.eventbrite.co.uk

TRADE SHOW SURVIVAL GUIDE Trade shows have been popular for years now, but when you’re relatively new to the industry you can find yourself staring at an oversized room without a clue about where you should start. But do not fear: HIP Magazine has got you covered. Follow these fool-proof tips on trade show survival and you will become a king of the road (well, show, but you know where we’re going with this…)

CHOOSE YOUR TRANSPORT WISELY

PREPARE BEFORE YOU GO

You know where these trade shows like to place themselves? Major cities, that’s where. We’re talking London, Manchester, Birmingham, etc. It seems to be a natural inclination to think that public transport would be a fabulous idea because these types of locations are so conveniently accessible but alas, beware! What if it’s more than pens you end up carrying back home? That Hitachi drill you’ve had your eager eye on for months could suddenly appear with a special discount. They could be giving away free mugs, bottles of beer, the kitchen sink…

That exhibition list is created to keep you sane, so use it to the max. Highlight your main stopping points and plan your time by area. This way, if one of your port of calls is busy when you get there, you can check out another one of your priority stalls that are in the same area.

MAINTAIN YOUR ENERGY LEVELS

THROW YOURSELF INTO IT

The common free coffee and bacon roll upon arrival is a sure hit (duh) but don’t let it make you dehydrated when you’ve got all of that schmoozing / networking to do. Stack up on the Lucozade (or similar beverage) before you go so that you are well-equipped. Dehydration deactivated.

This last point probably sounds obvious, but it’s the absolute best way to do it. Don’t be that guy that regrets not having a crack at the darts / van / superbike challenge when he sees that it’s someone he knows who has won the holiday to Florida or van full of tools. People are there to meet people, so have fun and go for it!

HONEYWELL EXPANDS RANGE OF SMART CONTROL APPLICATIONS The UK has one of the largest boiler markets in Europe, with nearly 1.5 million gas boilers installed each year 1. All boilers are most efficient when partnered with an intuitive control system, such as a smart, Wi-Fi enabled thermostat. Yet, with a diverse range of properties and heating systems in the UK, there is no ‘one size fits all solution’ when it comes to smart controls. Recognising this, Honeywell continues to develop the capabilities of its popular T6 series thermostat range to cater to a wide variety of systems. The most recent additions to the portfolio allows installers to install controls for heating only, heating and hot water and two zone applications.

The T6R Hot Water (T6R-HW) is a wireless thermostat with all the features of the existing T6 range, such as full internet control via smart phone or tablet, OpenTherm, time proportional and integral control (TPI), optimum start / stop and delayed start boiler control, plus additional, hot water-specific time control.

For example, geo-fencing can detect when the householder is close to home, then turn the heating on and apply a hot water boost, ensuring the tank is ready for them to have a hot shower.

Wireless receiver There is also a new, two-channel wireless receiver which supports two heat zones. For two zone applications, the receiver supports the creation of two heating zones using two T6 programmable thermostats wirelessly paired to the one receiver. What’s more, Honeywell is making the two-channel wireless receiver box and the wireless T6 thermostat available as a spare,

to ensure installers can custom build the system they need. Andy Mansfield, marketing communications manager at Honeywell, said: “We are constantly monitoring market trends to ensure our product development reflects what both installers and their customers need. “This expansion of the T6 range means installers have access to a connected, smart heating solution for any type of heating system or boiler, with the same premium quality they have come to expect from Honeywell.”  For more information, please visit honeywelluk.com

HERE’S WHAT YOUR VEHICLE IS TRYING TO TELL YOU Warning lights flag up a number of problems with your vehicle from an oil shortage to an engine fault, but many people are often unaware of what signs mean and what to do if lights do come on.

ENGINE LIGHT The engine light can come on for a number of reasons, it can be due to a faulty electrical sensor, a misfire, or something else that will change how your engine normally works. Take your car or van to a mechanic to get it checked over. Don’t continue driving it.

Acting quickly to rectify the problem is important for the safety of the driver, passengers and other road users and for the health of the vehicle, saving you a hefty repair bill or worse - a scrapped car or van. Motoring experts at LeaseVan.co.uk have compiled a list of what vehicle warning lights mean and what to do if they ever turn on so you can be fully prepared.  Visit LeaseVan.co.uk

SEATBELT LIGHT

TYRE PRESSURE LIGHT

The seatbelt light indicates when seatbelts aren’t plugged in correctly. Ensure all seat belts are done up properly and this will go off.

The light will illuminate if tyres aren’t at normal pressure or if there is a puncture. Pull over and take a look at the tyres for any wear and tear. If it’s a case of topping up, do it as soon as possible to avoid any damage.

HAZARD LIGHTS

AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT

ABS LIGHT

This is to indicate that your hazard lights are on. Ensure that these are only used when there is an emergency and you need to slow down. If they are on by accident it could cause disruption as people will think there is something wrong with your vehicle.

It’s important to get a faulty airbag looked at as soon as possible as it may not release and protect the driver and passengers during a crash. On the other hand, a faulty airbag could go off at any time causing shock, injury or blocking your view.

This light will come on if there are any issues with the anti-lock braking system or if your car is doing a bulb check. If it’s a bulb check then stopping safely and turning the car on and off should turn the light off, but if it remains on it’s best to get it looked at as soon as possible.

BATTERY LIGHT

OIL LIGHT

ENGINE COOLANT LIGHT

This should come on when you turn on your car but if it doesn’t go out after a few seconds then there may be a fault with the electrical system – this could cause you to come to a halt if the battery isn’t working properly. It’s best to get it checked out as it could be a faulty battery or it could be due to the alternator drive belt braking.

Ignoring the oil warning light can cause extensive damage to your car. If the light is illuminated it’s because the oil temperature is too high or the oil level or pressure is too low. Stop driving as soon as the light pops on to avoid engine damage and get a garage to check the problem ASAP.

If this comes on it means your engine is too hot. Park up and turn the engine off for 30 minutes to allow the car to cool down, check the coolant level and top up if needed. If you don’t need any more coolant, take it to a repair shop to check it over as soon as possible as it could be a bigger problem.

WIRQUIN NANO 6.7 BASIN WASTE & TRAP We got our hands on the Wirquin Nano 6.7 Basin Waste and Trap and here is how we got on… The main benefit of this technology is that it is space saving as it is so compact. It has an adjustable fall and it is easy to install. The fact that it can be used for both overflow and non-overflow basins is a big advantage because it makes it universal and the waterless trap is good because this means that there will be no buildup of bacteria.

Here’s some shocking examples of what not to do! Whilst the vast majority of plumbers and heating installers do a great job, there are a few offenders out there who either don’t care or don’t know any better. A key player in the Rinnai Infinity condensing water heaters family is the Solo range, a highly efficient HeavyDuty gas-fired recirculatory water heater with a completely insulated stainless steel storage cylinder. The combination of continuous flow units with a storage cylinder for pre-heated hot water allows for periods of peak hour use. This is of importance at those sites where limited gas services may dictate the use and application of water heating systems. The Rinnai Solo answers this problem - with system efficiency, ease of installation and end-user satisfaction.
