Here at Concept Hair we held our first virtual Learner of the Year final, celebrating your amazing talents.

You can see all the winners, plus their incredible work in this issue.

We have also launched our new School Spotlight Award, recognising blossoming talent within those schools that offer hairdressing as part of their syllabus.

We are so excited to see this competition go from strength to strength, further proving our commitment to supporting the next generation of industry stars.

We’ll be announcing the winners of this year’s School Spotlight Award over on Instagram on 24 May (@concepthairmag).

The team at Concept Hair is full of optimism for the future. We have some exciting plans for the Concept Hair brand and we know the hairdressing industry is going to heal and grow after what has been a turbulent year.

Andrew Barton Rolls out ABLE Education Celebrity hairdresser Andrew Barton is looking to share his expertise and decades of experience with hairdressing students across the UK with the national roll-out of his education concept, ABLE (Andrew Barton London Education).

Andrew describes ABLE as a unique, contemporary

training scholarship that offers further education institutions a comprehensive training programme to add to their existing portfolio of hairdressing education.

A Hair-up Extravaganza Hair-up specialist Lucy Healey and the rest of the team behind the recent virtual event, The Big Day, raised more than £1,000 for the Hair and Beauty Charity.

Taking place on 20 February via a dedicated event Facebook page, The Big Day was a day-long, online, interactive event featuring amazing hair and makeup artists, including hair-up maestro, Patrick Cameron.

Throughout the day, those attending were offered the chance to win some fabulous prizes, including an incredible gift pack from Cloud Nine featuring its professional styling Iron and the Airshot hairdryer from its Sericite Collection — a prize worth nearly £300!

Synergy Event Launches New Era for Matrix British artists sharing their creativity and skill over the two days included Desmond Murray and Lisa Farrall.

Desmond talked about creating some of his most iconic images, before showing how to create the looks.

Some 3,000 hairdressers from across the globe tuned into the Matrix Synergy event in March to witness the relaunch of the colour and haircare brand.

Alfredo Lewis, welcomed a myriad of Matrix artists to celebrate the exciting new chapter for the brand which includes a new look, feel and philosophy. An international audience came together to watch some 36 classes across four stages.

UK ambassador Lisa Farrall was interviewed by Alfredo Lewis about working as a freelance session stylist. She told Alfredo: “If someone says no, stay positive; no doesn’t mean you’re not good enough. It can mean you’re not someone’s cup of tea and that’s OK. Believe in yourself, take a risk on yourself.”

The ABLE scholarship is set to roll out at various institutions nationwide with a target to become a British product of excellence and exported internationally.

British Hairdressing Business Awards – Winners Announced The best of British hairdressing’s business excellence was celebrated at HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards 2020.

This year all the award winners were announced during a virtual ceremony on Monday 25th January, hosted by TV personality Joel Dommett and Jayne Lewis-Orr, Executive Director of HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards.

Among the night’s winners was Colin McAndrew, owner of Medusa Hairdressing in Edinburgh, who took home the award for Business Director of the Year.

Representing the next generation of hairdressers, John Alfred, of Paul Edmonds, London was named Assistant of the Year.

Most treasured possession?

When I left school, I had no confidence — it was bullied out of me. I hated everything about me — the way I looked, even the sound of my voice. It took me many years to rebuild my confidence and be proud to be me again.

My little Pomeranian, Bear. He is a handful but an absolute joy.

I’m more of a savoury guy, so it’s starter all the way — especially if it’s something with cheese!

e spoke to Jessica before the ceremony about how it felt to be a finalist. I only started doing hairdressing in September 2020, so this is absolutely amazing.

When I told my dad I’d made it to the final I nearly cried. Winning is everything. I look at Concept Hair on Instagram and there are so many other amazing hairdressers out there.

I feel honoured. It’s a really tough competition.

It’s something I can take with me and use as a springboard to go onto even bigger things.

What I’d say to anyone thinking of entering in 2022 is, the brief is open to interpretation. You can always put your own twist on it and do your own thing.

I’d also say, be your own supporter.

No-one else will believe in you as much as you believe in yourself.”

How would you describe the stunning colour in this image?

I actually nicknamed this look the Jellyfish Spock as I took the inspiration from a jellyfish and also Spock from Star Trek, and I combined the two.

What do you have to take into account before embarking on a dramatic colour change?

I painted a shine line around the hair, working slowly and using the natural hair fall. I worked with the contours of the head to make sure the placement was just right.

A thorough consultation is a must before every colour but even more so when it comes to a big change.

I’d advise trying out a similar shade from a semipermanent range first before taking the plunge.

In a salon environment, what tips would you offer a colourist who has been asked by a client to give them a bold new look?

Spend time on your consultation. Do not sugar coat it. If a client asks you whether bleach will damage her hair, the answer is “Yes, but we are here to do control damage.” Take her on a journey to achieve the perfect balance with what she wants and what is achievable.

What do you love about creating a dramatic colour change?

A colour change is particularly interesting because the person is telling me they are ready to transform and become a new (or a better) version of themselves.

The honour of being trusted with their new identity is powerful.

How would you describe the stunning colour in this image?

This is a nod to current trends and to individualism. It's a very simple technique but the placement and size of the blonde panel makes this dramatic. Along with the warm tone of the blonde and burgundy in harmony, the result is sublime.

What do you have to take into account before embarking on a dramatic colour change?

Condition is paramount. I will not change someone’s colour if their hair condition will be compromised in the process. Most importantly though I take into account the person in front of me. Who are they? Why are they making this change? What do they want to tell the world about themselves?

Any particular technique used to accomplish this colour transformation?

Precision lightening. The challenge I set myself was to complete a lightened panel, using Blond Studio from L’Oréal, around the hairline and then apply the burgundy right next to it and develop them together.

In a salon environment, what tips would you offer a colourist who has been asked by a client to give them a bold new look?

Remember, ‘bold’ doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone so client analysis is important — ask the right questions.

Kate Drury: I’m absolutely delighted.

I’m so pleased all my hard work has been recognised so early on in my career.

CH: Tell us about the winning collection.

KD: I wanted to create images that not only demonstrated my skills, but also captivated the viewer. I created styles that are soft and luxurious to illustrate how hair can enhance a client’s natural beauty.

CH: What do you think made it a winning collection?

KD: I think that one of the most important things to remember when creating looks for photoshoots is that you can only plan so much. Sometimes working with the model’s natural look and not over-complicating things can look much more striking. So, keeping it simple and having a fluid theme running through.

CH: How do you plan to use your win to develop your career?

KD: I’m hoping this will lead to more opportunities to work within our artistic team, and also fill me with confidence in the salon every day.

CH: How did you get into hairdressing and what was the attraction?

KD: I’ve always had a natural ability with hair. When I was younger, I used to spend hours playing around with my

pony’s mane and tail, learning every different type of braid, and my friends have always asked me to do their hair on nights out. However, it was only after taking my A-levels and applying to university that I realised doing hair was what I loved.

CH: What were the main lessons your learned during your training?

KD: One of the biggest things that has helped my confidence with transitioning from a junior to a stylist was realising that consultation is key. It took me a while to understand that it’s better to spend more time asking questions, managing clients’ expectations and truly understanding what they want, than promising the world, or guessing and having a disappointed client. This was a massive turning point for me. Another major lesson – it’s important to take your time, don’t rush for anyone!

CH: What goals did you set yourself to achieve in the first few years of your career and how did you achieve them?

KD: I’ve always thought it’s important to set achievable targets along the way, and so my first goals were to achieve my Levels 1 and 2, while working at the salon.

CH: What do you love most about your job?

KD: I love the people that I work with — we always have such a laugh. I also love my clients. Making people feel amazing and seeing the massive change in their confidence after they’ve had their hair done is a really lovely feeling.

CH: Tell us more about your role at Mode?

KD: I’d like to think of myself as a Mode all-rounder. I don’t specialise in any particular aspect of hairdressing at the moment, I think it’s really important to do everything as you’re starting out.

However, in the future I’d like to work towards specialising in colour.

CH: What ambitions do you still have?

KD: Winning Newcomer of the Year has made me more ambitious to continue with competition work. I’d love to enter Men’s Hairdresser of the Year and continue doing more work with the Mode artistic team. I’m also already enrolled into Goldwell’s Colour Creatives for 2021, so watch this space!

CH: Any advice to those starting out on their hairdressing career journey?

KD: Don’t be a hairdresser with bad hair! Look your best to be your best.

Give people a reason to try you just from seeing how you present yourself. Part of being a good hairdresser, in my opinion, is having a great personality and being able to make people love you. It’s not all about your hairdressing ability. Work on your own personal USP, because there are millions of hairdressers that can cut a bob.

Tiff J: At 3thirty we welcome clients with every conceivable hair texture.

Whether a client has straight European hair, Asian hair or Afro hair, we can look after them. Every stylist is trained in all hair types from straight to excessively curly.

CH: Why were you fascinated by textured hair?

TJ: I personally have a mane of textured hair, so I have always had a keen understanding of what works and what doesn’t. I was always in search of a specialist curl practitioner! I found that person in Tony Heggarty who had a salon in Old Street, London. I went to work for him and decided to really focus on how I could work and specialise in textured hair.

CH:What would you say to any trainee hairdressers wanting to work with textured hair TJ: You’ve got to have the conviction to get in there and do it and learn what you can as you go along – it’s an amazing part of hairdressing and the demand is growing daily.

CH:What would you say to any trainee hairdressers about how they can embrace textured hair and enjoy working with it?

TJ: If you are truly interested in becoming an accomplished hairdresser with textured hair you must check out the experts like I did and work with them.

Lisa Farrall is a globally famous session stylist who for more than 20 years has worked with celebrities, music artists and TV personalities both in the U.K. and internationally. She is also an ambassador for leading colour and haircare brand, Matrix and an expert on textured hair.

Concept Hair: How did you come to be such a textured hair specialist?

Lisa Farrall: It all started from not wanting to turn any clients away. I saw this happen as an assistant when I was 15. Quite simply, no one had the education to deal with textured hair.

This is when I knew I didn’t ever want to be that hairstylist. So, I travelled 50 miles every Saturday to work in an Afro hair salon and I started my education right there.

CH: Why do you love working with textured hair?

LF: Textured hair has no limits. I love working with all hair types, but the transformative and gravity defying looks I can achieve with textured hair are outstanding.

CH: Does textured hair offer any specific challenges when working in a pressured environment?

LF: Depending on the brief, you will have to make a hair piece or a wig.

Unless you are working on a very basic beauty editorial the hair will need some prep no matter what.

You always have to stay calm and think fast. Things change, things go wrong, and someone might change their mind at the last minute. Be prepared and have a backup or two.

CH: Tell us about a specific project you have worked on recently.

LF: I recently created a textured series with Matrix on L'Oréal Access to show hairdressers my signature curly colour and to also share styling techniques. It's a crazy time for everyone so it's great to take this time to educate.

CH: Any hero products for you when working with textured hair?

LF: It's important to add moisture into the hair, so I shampoo with Matrix Moisture Me and condition with Moisture Me Conditioner. I tend to leave a small amount of conditioner in the hair depending on the texture.

CH: Any advice to trainee hairdressers when it comes to working with heavily textured hair?

LF: Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, try something new and educate yourself. No one will push you — you have to be your own cheerleader.

Go to classes, watch tutorials and never stop practising — remember your mistakes make you better.

Think soft, air-dried, alluring, effortless and super-cool for this cut. 2020 taught us the ‘big chop’ is not a trend it’s a movement and we’re going to be seeing loads more pixies this season. Firstly, our receptionist greets all clients at reception. If the client is new, or returning after a long break, after checking them in, the receptionist shows the client around the salon, explaining all they will need to know while they are with us at the salon — including where the toilets are and what the free Wifi code is.

When consulting, we ask the client what they currently like and dislike about their hair, and if they were brave enough what would they love to have done. This gives you a good insight of what they like and what kind of person they are.

We love to photograph our clients’ hair journeys — we always ask permission first. So many clients love to see their progress and to be part of your social media, especially if this is a colour change or to encourage hair growth.

We feel the shampoo stage should be the most relaxing part of a client’s visit. We like to take a little bit more time and attention shampooing, allowing them to fully relax with a normal hairdressing scalp massage as well as pressure point massage, just to ease any tension a client has.

Point of sale marketing material is massive in our industry, but I think if you believe in the products you are using and say why you are using them they will sell themselves. I always bring my product over to the client, and when used I pop it on the side table. If a client likes it, they will pick it up and read the label, while interacting with me. If they are not interested, they won’t do this, and then I would never pressure sell.

Recline the chair, drape the client and protect the eyes with cotton wool or pads, to prevent beard clippings getting into the eyes.

Use the clippers, without a guard, in the closed position to remove length. On the right side establish a sideburn perimeter line horizontally. Remove hair from the jaw to the sideburn, through the cheek and to the neck. Change directions to adapt to the client’s growth patterns.

KEY TECHNIQUES The Lockdown Effect Many men working from home have opted to grow their facial hair – this can take some time. The recommendation I gave to my clients before lockdown was this: “If you’ve never tried it definitely give it a go. If it doesn’t work for you, looks patchy, irritates the hell out of you, use a grade 1 on a clipper and get rid of it.”

Back to the Barber I expect a lot of clients will return to barbershops up and down the UK with big lumberjack beards. What I’d say to any barbers is be ready to trim them into a cleaner shape or even a complete restyle as they’ll now have the length to play with and most likely a picture for you to replicate.

General Trends

Facial Hair Care Make sure you are educating your clients on their beard. If they’ve asked you to trim it , chances are they don’t know how to care for it. The rule of thumb is the longer the beard the more care it’ll need.

The shorter the beard, the more trimming it will require. I always recommend to wash it regularly. This is so important in the early stages of growth, as well as the final stage of the desired style.

Make sure to use a diffuser when drying the hair and then go over the hair using a large barrel wand to create the bends and shape.”

“This haircut has had its fair share of dislike and ridicule over the years.

But as with all trends if someone does it well it can become fashionable again. I’m a big fan of the 70s haircut and personally I love a good mullet too! Blow dry some oil into the hair and remember you’re not looking for volume, so follow the dryer with a flat brush flat against the head.

My top tip to style this out would be to use a large curling tong to create some movement around the face.”

“One benefit of lockdown was the forced experimental phase-out that hair went through.

We quickly realised if long hair works or doesn’t, and for some it really does work. This wavy pushed back hair look must have length on the sides for it to work. It’s an anti-fade style with a distressed texture and worn off the face and tucked behind the ear. Product here is key here as you want controlled mess with volume throughout, so use volume mousse at the roots and blow dry in on a slow speed.”

My career choice I fell in love with colour straight away! I loved the mixture of science and creativity. I don't think I ever did decide. I just became the go-to in the salon for formulations and colour problems because I love it so much.

Why I specialised

I was working with Sharon Peake and Adam Bryant at the Ethos salon in Manchester when they won British Colour Technicians of the Year at the 2013 British Hairdressing Awards. They are both amazing colourists and artists. The way they think about colour and the inspiration behind their collection was always so interesting to be a part of and they both taught me so much.

I wanted to specialise in colour so I could live and breathe my passion day in, day out. I made it my mission to educate and bring an understanding to others of the correct usage of colour.

What I love most

I completed my L’Oréal Colour Degree and graduated four years ago. I then had the opportunity to audition to be a part of the L’Oréal Innovative Team — this is a year-long programme.

I love the problem solving.

Give me a colour correction any day. I love a real head scratcher, when you need a pen and paper in the colour room to think about your ratio and a full salon debate about what needs to be done.

Extra education The biggest learning experience for me was the 10-day advanced course, Matrix Colour Mastery.

Only when I’d finished the course, did I really feel like I was a specialist.

Why I specialised I draw and paint out of salon hours, so colour is an important part of my life but also I love what hair colour does to lift a shape or style.

Extra education I completed the Wella Master Colour Expert Programme as well as two other brandspecific colour degrees.

I still enjoy continuous professional development through Wella in order to stay on top of the latest colour technology.

We have a duty of care to “deliver the best services ”

I

n a client survey about the salon experience, the most popular part of the client visit was voted the shampoo experience. In the same survey, it was also the least popular part.

These contrasting views show that the care and skill of the hairdresser carrying out the shampoo service will determine whether a client finds the experience relaxing or traumatic. When I was an apprentice hairdresser, I loved shampooing, and it showed.

Here are my tips for providing the best shampoo experience: MAKE SURE THE AREA IS CLEAN AND PRESENTABLE Before you escort your client to the basin, make sure it is sanitised and that the area around is tidy and prepared for the service. Ensure you have fresh towels and a gown ready.

ENSURE THE CLIENT IS COMFORTABLE AND RELAXED As your client takes a seat and reclines, her comfort should be top of your agenda. Your basin is likely to have adjustments for the seat and the bowl.

Make sure you know how to adjust these for client comfort. You can also use cushions and a footrest to help support or to raise the height. Use a neck rest and keep asking your client how she feels. If your client is not positioned well, she may get wet or suffer pain, if she feels relaxed, she will enjoy your service. Remember if your client cannot get comfortable you always have the option to offer a forward wash.

KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS Are you comfortable? Is the water the right temperature? Do you prefer a firm or gentle massage? Each client is unique. Your stylist should help you select the right shampoo and conditioner for the best results.

Sleep Well

Never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep. Getting your eight hours of quality slumber can lower blood pressure, fight premature aging and re-energise you both physically and mentally.

Here’s our top tips for getting the right amount of shut-eye.

Keep it regular Okay, so there’s no way you’re going to always be in bed at the same time and up with the first glimpse of sunlight, but where possible keeping to a regular sleep pattern is a great idea. This way you train your mind to shut down at a certain time and you’ll find it much easier to drift off into a restful sleep.

Avoid Blue Light

Keep those mobile phones and laptops out of the bedroom, and try and avoid using them for a good hour before you slip under the covers.

Blue light from these devices tricks the brain into thinking it’s daylight, which means it produces less melatonin, the hormone that helps you sleep.

Create a sleepinducing Space Try and keep all distractions out of the bedroom — no TVs, computers or general clutter. Create a space that promotes sleep and relaxation.

Try infusing the air of your bedroom with essential oils such as lavender and opt for relaxing colours on the walls, such as blues, yellows and greens.

Kick the caffeine Sometimes a coffee provides the boost we need to get through the afternoon, but try not to drink caffeine later in the day. Even a coffee drank six hours before you go to bed can disturb your sleep.

TIP 5

Don’t panic At some point, we all experience trouble getting to sleep or waking in the middle of the night with our minds racing. The first rule is not to panic. Try some deep breathing and don’t focus on worrying thoughts.

Lauren Askew

As our January Learner of the Month, Lauren, an 18-year-old barbering apprentice from Solihull College, has bagged herself a product bundle from Indola worth £100.

Lauren created her favourite look for the competition — a skin fade with a textured top.

Lauren has been in the hair industry for two and a half years. She currently spends one day a week in college and the rest of the week working at a Birmingham-based barbershop.

Lauren says the best advice she ever received was: “Your next haircut will be better than the last, don’t give up, you never stop learning”

Amir Razaie

Twenty-year-old Amir has been in the hairdressing industry for just over two years.

He has completed his level 2 barbering and from September, plans to continue to work towards his level 3 barbering at Solihull College. As our February winner, Amir walked away with a Beretto Clipper from Wahl Professional.

Amir’s journey started when his friend introduced him to barbering. “I love all of it but I especially love doing skin fades and I’m trying to learn different techniques to make it easier and look much better,” he told Concept Hair.

Amir’s plans for his career and future are bright. “I’m really greedy to achieve more skills, win more competitions and gain qualifications,” he said. He also hopes to open his own barbershop one day.

Wioleta Alani

Originally from Poland, Wioleta is a 29-year-old student at Wiltshire College studying towards her Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Hairdressing. Since moving to England, she has worked as a self-employed hairdresser alongside her studies at college.

For her winning look, Wioleta created an avantgarde style inspired by sea coral and fishing nets.

“I am really happy that people liked my entry and honoured that the judges chose it out of so many amazing hairstyles,” she said.

Wioleta has enjoyed styling and dressing hair since she was a child and that evolved into colouring and experimenting with different hairstyles. For now, her goal is to complete her course with a high grade and for the future, she is hoping to have her own salon and take an active part in hair competitions.
