The Grove at Towne Center has several new developments to announce as we head into this new year. Most recently, local favorite Hacienda Bar & Grill signed a lease to open a new restaurant, The Grove Taqueria, at the nearly completed town center. Known for its unique blend of traditional Mexican recipes and modern culinary innovations, the restaurant will be sure to be a huge hit among patrons. The new addition is situated next to another highly anticipated local staple, Parkside restaurant, both of which are located immediately adjacent to the recently opened common area “Grove,” designed for visitors to enjoy the great outdoors during their trip to the new city center. These two restaurants together are set to bring the culinary landscape at The Grove to the next level with delicious bites and vibrant atmospheres to be enjoyed by all who visit. Anticipated to open their doors in the summer of 2024, these establishments are the last two buildings to deliver in the completion of the nine-building project. Potential visitors are not the only ones looking forward to these two new additions, however. Mayor Barbara Bender also had a few notes about what these establishments will bring to the development and the buzz surrounding these recent additions: “We could not be more excited to have a Hacienda Bar & Grill 2

restaurant call The Grove home,” said Bender. “With Hacienda’s popularity in the area, we are sure The Grove Taqueria will be a huge hit and are proud to offer such an immersive and authentic dining experience to our patrons. The Grove aims to be a place where visitors, families, and individuals can come and congregate while also meeting any need they might have, and these two new restaurant additions are a great addition to the food and beverage component of this goal.” This exciting announcement follows several significant milestones recently achieved by The Grove, reinforcing its status as a blooming community hub for Georgia residents and visitors alike. The recent grand opening of the Elizabeth H. Williams Branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library marks a pivotal moment in the center’s growth. The new library building, spanning approximately 24,000 square feet, is twice the size of the previous branch, providing visitors adventure and education within its state-of-the-art walls. The library’s second floor is home to THRIVE | Coworking, an Atlanta-based hybrid workspace catering to the evolving needs of modern professionals with group workspaces, private offices, and even a luxurious outdoor working area. Meanwhile, Northside Medical Snellville, the new medical complex coming to The Grove, also had a grand opening recently. The ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated the 45,000-square-foot medical office Where Everybody’s Proud to be Somebody

The Grove at Towne Center

building and the adjacent 7,500-square-foot medical retail building that make up Northside Medical Snellville. These buildings will house a multispecialty surgery center, orthopedics, women’s imaging, general surgery, and physical therapy upon completion. The Grove has also recently completed two exciting additions to the space – a state-of-the-art mosaic-surrounded splash pad area and a pavilion gathering space. These family-friendly amenities contribute to the center’s commitment to providing a family friendly space for visitors to enjoy nature and fellowship with the surrounding community. As the center evolves, there are also exciting plans in the works for the signature Market building. Although tenant announcements are pending, the anticipation is palpable as the community eagerly awaits plans for this central space. As we approach the completion of several aspects of the project in the summer of 2024, the culmination of these developments promises to establish The Grove at Snellville as a vibrant and thriving city center housing any and everything

community members could ever need or desire. With tried-andtrue local restaurants promising a variety of culinary delights and community-focused spaces that foster connection, The Grove is sure to be enjoyed for years to come. With each new addition to the project, The Grove continues to evolve into a place where residents can live, work, and play, fostering a sense of community and lifestyle of ease that will undoubtedly endure for years to come.

“The Grove aims to be a place where visitors, families, and individuals can come and congregate while also meeting any need they might have, and these two new restaurant additions are a great addition to the food and beverage component of this goal.” 3

Mayor’s Message - Mayor Barbara Bender It is a great time to reflect on the past and plan for the future when the calendar changes over to a new year. Along with the City’s Centennial celebration, we saw some changes in 2023 – the new library opened, THRIVE CoWorking opened and is leasing up, The Tomlin apartments are full, Northside Hospital opened a new surgery center, the city market building started construction, sidewalks built on Skyland Drive - are a few things that come to mind. We also saw the retirement of our city manager, Butch Sanders, who managed the city and oversaw The Grove development so well. After 12 years with the City and close to 40 years in the industry, he has retired to Dalton to be closer to his family and grandchildren. We wish him well as he figures out how to slow down and rest a bit. Matthew Pepper was promoted to City Manager and took the helm In January. Matthew was Assistant City Manager under Butch Sanders for the past two-and-a-half years and was formally the city manager of Oxford, GA. We look forward to working with Matthew to continue to deliver excellent services to our citizens. The New Year will continue to bring exciting improvements to

the city as well. We look forward to: • completion of the new maintenance building at Briscoe Park • sidewalks on Pinehurst Road • two restaurants coming to The Grove, and • design of a community center building in T.W. Briscoe Park We look forward to serving the next four years with two new councilmembers, Kerry Hetherington and Norman Carter. I commend them both for stepping up to serve the city in this capacity. In addition, we said goodbye to two councilmembers – Dave Emanuel who served 12 years and Solange Destang who served four years. We thank them for their time and commitment to the city and wish them well on their future journey. We look forward to navigating the opportunities and challenges that await for 2024.

Snellville History

Cobblestone Office Park’s agricultural history By Denise Mann Snellville’s history is richly rooted in successful people and community development. Legacy agricultural farms once encompassed the properties of current day Snellville and generational families are still guiding the growth of Snellville today. Originally, without a railway stop, there was not a natural city center when Sawyer and Snell’s mercantile opened in 1879 at the corner of highways 78 and 124. Eventually, a post office was established and then the town’s official incorporation in 1923 under Gladstone Snell. A city was starting to form. Around this time of incorporation, James Sawyer purchased 17 acres called the “Drake Home Place.” This purchase added to his total of 3,200 acres owned around Snellville. Located between Old Snellville Highway (now North Road), Wisteria, and Highway 78, the property was later inherited by Hazel Sawyer Clower. In an interview with Sawyer’s oldest living grandson, Jim R. Clower, “this probably was the most valuable of his holdings.” And boy was he correct. Clower describes the family farm as fiercely self-sufficient. Watermelon, cantaloupe, hogs, chicken, and beans were key crops and industrious matriarch Hazel Clower would trade seedlings and grafted trees in the Georgia Market Bulletin. During these beginning days, everyone knew each other in Snellville and surrounding farm towns. The community supported each other during harvest and meat processing, but just as importantly building the local school, water supply, roads and government systems. Further, as Clower adds, it was a time when a gaggle of farm boys (whose names seem to decorate the town’s streets and building these days) could walk the dirt road seven miles to the Colonial 18 theatre in Lawrenceville and watch a movie with coke and a popcorn for 25 cents. After the war, modern industry shifted families away from farming and into downtown cities. The City of Snellville needed something new. The Mason brothers bought 500 acres of Sawyer land and the birth of suburban Georgia began. The Clower farm sold parts of its acreage to support the growth of Snellville business. Oak Road was extended across the center of the property and a cross road, aptly named Clower street, was installed. 12

Somebody in Snellville.”

Years later, on what was probably a watermelon patch, the business complex of Cobblestone Office Park was opened in 1987, a growing time when “Everybody was

Cobblestone Office Park became a prime location for growing local businesses. It boasted private suites for small businesses like doctor’s offices as well as executive suites with secretarial services. Cobblestone Office Park has been an anchor as business thrived in the new downtown and the growth along the main roadways exploded. Some faithful resident businesses of Cobblestone include McEwen Chiropractic Center, Alternative Homecare for Seniors, and Oral Surgery Associates. As Snellville continues to grow and change so has the former Clower farm. Cobblestone Office Park is now owned and operated by DDA-Snellville. Adjacent properties include City Hall, the Police Station, the amazing Grove, new post office and Elizabeth H. Williams Library. Development continues across Wisteria with the Northside medical complex. In this unique nestled spot, Cobblestone continues to offer commercial lease options for new businesses - beginning their stories as they exit City Hall, business license in hand, bringing new ideas for our city. As Clower highlighted, his family believes in a “best land use” theory - finding the correct business use on the right property. In reflection then, how would Henry and Hazel Clower feel about the modern Work Live Play community of Snellville? “Amazed and very proud,” Jim Clower answers. Emmett Clower, former Snellville Mayor agrees, “they would be very proud of the development of their former farm and would not believe what Snellville has become in 2023.” Maybe that’s why our new Snellville motto is Where Everybody’s Proud to be Somebody. From humble beginnings, this town has been born and developed by legacy families. The spiral staircases of Cobblestone Office Park continue to watch, welcome and see what’s next. Snellville Farmers’ Market

Eating healthy at the city Farmers’ Market By Gretchen Schulz Councilwoman Market organizer Cough, cough, sneeze, sneeze! This is the season when many of us are battling respiratory illnesses. Of course, you always want to seek the advice of your medical provider should you become ill, but are there things you can do to help protect yourself from developing a respiratory illness? You’ve undoubtedly heard the saying “You are what you eat”, a saying that is so true as it relates to a healthy immune system. Foods fuel your body by providing protective antibodies as well as the nutrients needed to build new immune cells that help keep your body healthy. The Snellville Farmers Market is a great place to shop for foods that will provide the nutrients for a healthy diet. We’ve focused on a few foods sold at the market. First, consider those foods rich in vitamins A and C, which are known to build healthy skin and mucous tissue, your body’s first line of defense against undesirable bacteria and viruses. Vitamin A rich foods now available at the market include sweet potatoes, spinach, carrots, and collard greens. Foods that provide vitamin C include oranges, grapefruit, and broccoli. TyCo B Farms sells a wide variety of produce from his three farms, including a farm in South Georgia where he is able to grow citrus fruits. MJ’s Vegetables and Cedar Seeder also bring a variety of produce. Mushrooms are a food that may not come to mind as beneficial to the immune system. Reishi, cordyceps, and turkey tail are some of the lesser-known fungi sold at the market by The Horti-Culture. Research is ongoing about mushrooms, but studies are showing they have a high antioxidant activity, which protects the body from cell damage. Other studies are

investigating the anti-cancer effects of mushrooms. Zinc is a mineral that is essential for the development of white blood cells, which destroy invading bacteria and viruses. Meats are a good source of zinc, and you will find grass-fed and antibiotic-free beef and pork sold by Presley’s Farm. JR & Sons BBQ offers tasty smoked pork available by the pound or as a sandwich. If fish is on your shopping list, stop by Dancin’ Salmon for smoked salmon, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids that will help to reduce inflammation. Tea is known to contain antioxidants that help to protect the body and Black Bean Coffee offers tea for you to sip as you walk about the market. Most of us have seen advertisements in recent years about turmeric, a spice that contains the active ingredient curcumin, which gives it a yellow color. Researchers are investigating whether the spice helps diseases in which inflammation plays a role. The spice can be added to smoothies and other beverages as well as curries. To purchase turmeric, check with A & H Provisions at the market. Original Wellness offers what they label as “healthy immunity tea,” which contains hibiscus, turmeric, ginger, and lemon. As you can see, the farmers market is your place to find foods that are loaded with nutrients for a healthy diet. The Snellville Farmers Market is held on the first and third Saturdays of each month through May in the City Hall parking lot, 2342 Oak Road. Market hours are 9 am to noon. Watch for our Facebook post prior to each market for a list of vendors we expect. Gretchen Schulz is a retired registered dietitian, a Snellville Council Member, and the founder of the Snellville Farmers Market.

City News Parks and Rec car show raises money for needy By Meghan Meegan Program coordinator Snellville Parks and Recreation Snellville Parks and Recreation, partnering with Georgia Cool Cruisers, hosted their 6th annual Car Show @ Briscoe Park in November. For the third year in a row the car show event has raised money for the Snellville Police Department’s Shop with a Cop program. With the donations from the November 2023 car show totaling $2,701 the Snellville Police Department, with help from the Snellville Citizens Police Academy Association, was able to include 10 more families in the program. Shop with a Cop offers families in need a chance to pick out Christmas gifts with the help of police. “We are excited to continue to partner with the Snellville Police Department for such a great cause and we have such a fun time on event day,” said Meghan Meegan, Parks and Recreation program coordinator. “Snellville Parks and Recreation is here to serve our residents and visitors in a multitude of ways,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Lisa A Platt, CPRP. “And our Georgia Cool Cruisers Car Show allows us to not just have a great event for all our patrons, but through generous donations at the event, we are able to help support some of our most precious resources - the kids of our community - by giving them a chance to have a wonderful holiday with toys and items of their choosing. We are thrilled to be a part of this process and to help generate more donations, which then allows more kids to be included in the Shop with a Cop event and to serve the youth of our community in yet another way.” The annual November event has once again exceeded expectations, Platt said. “Even though we had to push the event one extra weekend due

SPRD strives to serve all of our citizens and visitors, but the children of our community are the ones they want to cherish, Platt said. The November event has been so popular with the car club community and spectators that we have decided to add on a second car show at Briscoe Park every April allowing us to have a Spring and Fall Car Show event. Brookwood High School BHS foreign language teachers win PEAK awards More than 2,200 students take a French, German, Spanish, or Latin class staffed by 18 teachers in Brookwood High School’s World Languages Department. While Brookwood’s program is larger than most Gwinnett County high schools, the caliber and commitment of its teachers are what make it produce engaged students, Governor’s Honors Program participants, and seniors graduating with college credits. Brookwood consistently ranks among the top three schools in the county for students scoring a three or higher on the Advanced Placement (AP) national exam, which translates to potential college credits. These teachers have been recognized for excellence at the county, state, and national level. This year alone, five received a 2023 PEAK Award for Professionalism, Experience, Achievement and Knowledge: Ashley Allgood (Latin), Lindsey Campbell (Latin), Mirela Kimbrough (German), Christophe Powers (French), and Andrea Ryles (Spanish). For all, it was at least their fourth time receiving the award. Mrs. Allgood has 13 PEAK Awards to her name in her 17 years of teaching at Brookwood. Each year, only 7% of Gwinnett County Public Schools world language teachers received the honor. “It begins with a strong foundation at Level 1, and that’s what’s key,” says the school’s World Language Department Chairperson, Cristy Mathews. “We also give students plenty of opportunities to fully embrace a new language and culture and advance to the next level.” Class of 2022 graduate Timothy Wilson is an example of maximizing Brookwood’s opportunities. Under the guidance of German teacher Mirela Kimbrough, he was the first student in the county school system certified by Germany’s education authorities for language proficiency at the second level. Last year three Brookwood more students followed suit. All earned a four-year, full tuition university scholarship in Germany. Beyond the classroom, Brookwood students join world language clubs and honor societies, participate in related competitions, and experience the culture and language firsthand during teachersponsored trips to France, Germany, Italy, or Spain. Latin teacher Mrs. Campbell now offers her Junior Classical League (Latin Club) members the chance to participate in both the Fall Forum and state convention, both time-intensive but rewarding events. Brookwood teachers also go above and beyond. When Mrs. Kimbrough won 2023 Georgia’s Teacher of the Year from the American Association of Teachers of German, she traveled to Germany with other teachers from around the U.S. to learn and exchange teaching skills. Last spring, Ms. Ryles represented the Foreign Language Association of Georgia at the Southern

Mr. Powers, who has been teaching French for 20 years, is open to trying innovative teaching methods. He recently introduced a new speaking activity that increased class participation to nearly 100%. “The most rewarding part about my job is putting more French speakers into the world,” and with persistence, he is doing just that. Brookwood Cluster middle schools offer qualified students the option to start their school day in a Level 1 French, German, or Latin class at the high school, giving them the chance to earn high school credit while in eighth grade. Spanish I classes take place onsite at the middle schools.

Brookwood offers new art course on mixed media A class of 25 Brookwood High School students is getting a taste of what it is like to be a creative director at an advertising agency. The school is the first among traditional high schools in the county to offer a technologybased, advanced art course that incorporates film, photography, graphic design, animation, web design, and installation art. Students learn about famous digital art, photo manipulation, video art, and art installations to understand the processes and seek inspiration. Project assignments for the new Media Arts Comprehensive class are applicable to business, social media, or art exhibitions. 27 27
