Snellville Farmers’ Market

SFM: around the world, one market at a time

Farmers markets are one of the few places where food, culture, and community naturally intersect.

On Saturday mornings at the Snellville Farmers Market, that intersection comes alive with sights, smells, and flavors from around the world. Vibrant, crisp produce, freshly baked goods, the rich, earthy scent of spices, the aroma of fresh herbs, and the enticing smells of slow-smoked barbecue, Caribbean jerk, and freshly baked Latin pastries fill the air, while neighbors greet each other, families explore, and curious shoppers discover something new at every turn.

Our award-winning market is home to vendors who bring not only fresh ingredients but also the traditions and flavors of their cultures. JR & Son’s BBQ draws crowds with Southern favorites like pulled pork, ribs, smoked chicken, and rich gouda mac and cheese. Ronnie Tei’s offers comforting dishes from shrimp and grits to chicken pot pie and authentic Mexican cuisine. Across the market, Noori’s Kitchen shares traditional Afghan recipes, Beatrice Cuisine introduces bold Guyanese flavors, O.A.K. Fresh brings the taste of the Caribbean, Lorena’s Kitchen features vibrant Chilean dishes, and Sausage World offers an extensive variety of freshly made, handcrafted artisan sausages from around the world.

As Chef Ronnie Tei shares, “Food has a way of bringing people together, and it’s rewarding to see someone try something we made and genuinely enjoy it. We love hearing their stories, talking about recipes, and sometimes even learning how certain dishes remind them of home or family traditions. It turns a simple meal into a shared experience, and that connection is what makes being at the market so special.”

Many vendors also offer culturally inspired produce, spices,

baked goods, and small-batch sauces. Shoppers can take home unique vegetables like bitter melon and callaloo from MJ Vegetables, a generous selection of exotic vegetables, pepper plants, and dried peppers from Lilburn Peppers, fresh herbs, handcrafted sauces, or spice blends, ingredients that make it easy to explore global flavors in their own kitchens. Customers often stop to ask about cooking techniques, ingredients, or family recipes, turning a simple shopping trip into a cultural experience.

Each table tells a story, and every bite offers a taste of someone’s heritage. Families stroll the aisles together, longtime customers reconnect with favorite vendors, and newcomers are welcomed with the warmth that has made the market a cornerstone of the Snellville community.

Chef Daja of O.A.K. Fresh sums up the experience well, “I have enjoyed connecting with people from all over the world while at the market. The farmer’s market is basically a melting pot. There is never a dull moment—it has been filled with learning from others and growing. I believe that is my favorite part of the market.”

From Southern comfort food to international cuisine, from fresh produce to handcrafted sauces, the Snellville Farmers Market showcases the diversity of our community in every corner of the market. Each Saturday brings fresh flavors, friendly faces, and the reminder that food is one of the simplest—and most delicious—ways to bring people together.

Mark your calendars for two extra market days!

This spring, we are adding two extra market days to better serve our community. The Extended Season Market, which normally runs on the 1st and 3rd Saturday from October thru May, will also open on Saturday, May 23rd, and Saturday, May 30th, giving you even more opportunities to explore our award-winning market! We can’t wait to see you!

Greetings and happy spring!

As the season of renewal and growth begins, I would like to take a moment to extend warm wishes to each of you on behalf of Experience Snellville.

Mayor’s Message - Mayor Barbara Bender

Happy Spring! As I read through the first draft of this spring issue, I am amazed at the number of activities and events in the line up for this year. We, of course, have our great program of events on the Towne Green produced by Experience Snellville. There are also a lot of activities, sports, creative, and fitness activities through Snellville Parks & Recreation and Active Adult Center for people of all ages and abilities. Adding to the line up for 2026 is a fuller list of activities in The Grove at Snellville Towne Center. Concerts, a pet day and movies are on tap to augment the daily activity of the splash pad and events at the Elizabeth H. Williams Library.

In other Grove news – more of the restaurants are opening providing some awesome choices for lunch, dinner and just hanging out. Currently open is Crooked Can Brewery, Pita Mediterranean Street Food, Keys Cakery, Dumpling Master, Playa Bowls and The Grove Taqueria. Now opening is Parkside at the Grove, The Local Butcher & BBQ, Philly G’s, Fiamma Pizza and MackinMike’s. The wonderful patios and green space will be calling to you as the weather warms. We hope you will mark the special events on your calendar so you can come out and join us.

Snellville Public Works

Annual enrollment/renewal for Recycle and Second Trash Cart Program open

The City of Snellville Recycle and Second Trash Cart Program is a yearly subscription-based service that runs from May 1 to April 30 of each year. The program is optional. Recycling cart is $144 and an additional trash cart is $120.

The annual enrollment ends April 30 with service starting on May 1 each year. Service is tied to the address and is not transferable or refundable. Service is limited to one sign up per address. The service is only available to residents of the City of Snellville.

Check eligibility by entering your address on our website at www.snellville.org/am-i-city to verify you live within the city limits. Then complete the online enrollment and pay by credit card. Sign ups can also be completed in person at the Public Works Department located at 2491 Marigold Road. If paying with cash or check, service sign up must be completed in person. Residents that miss the March 1 through April 30 sign up window are eligible to sign up throughout the year.

We have some changes coming to our residential trash pickup services this summer. The current 65-gallon handcarts will be replaced with larger 95-gallon carts. The current blue bag program for extra trash and bulk items will be phased out. Each household can have one bulk item picked up two times per week, if needed. Please be on the look out for more information for details as they become available.

This is a good time to remind you to sign up for the curbside recycling and extra trash can programs. See the article for Public Works below for details.

I hope you have a wonderful spring and find some time to join in the many activities available in our community. These are great opportunities to meet your neighbors and get connected.

The wonderful patios and green space will be calling to you as the weather warms. We hope you will mark the special events on your calendar so you can come out and join us.

The cost of service will be prorated to match the sign up timeline. For more information about the program, contact Public Works at 770-985-3527.

Snellville Police Department

The Snellville Police Department strives to create a bond with the community it serves. To that end, officers are constantly in the community, building relationships with residents, young and old alike. Here are a few recent community-building endeavors.

The Snellville Police Department proudly took part in the inaugural multi-school Career & Trade Fair at South Gwinnett High School, connecting with and supporting students from South Gwinnett, Grayson, and Shiloh High Schools. They enjoyed speaking with students as they prepare to take the next step in their lives, offering guidance and insight to help them make informed decisions about their future careers

Ofc. Scott Hermel and Ofc. Alexander Thorpe recently presented a class for the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association titled “Basic Traffic Laws and Safety.” The session covered key topics such as the handsfree law, the move over law, seatbelt requirements, stopping for school buses, and the dangers of drowsy driving. Attendees also learned the proper way to approach, navigate, and exit a roundabout safely.

Officers recently hosted a community meet-and-greet in the Shadowbrook Crossing subdivision. During the Touch-A-Truck event, families had the opportunity to explore police vehicles up close, take photos, and connect with officers in a relaxed setting. One of our youngest residents was especially excited, posing with Cpl. Dinh Tran and showing interest in the Snellville Police Motorcycle Unit.

Ofc. Scott Hermel delivered a presentation for members of the Saddlebrook HOA on scams, fraud, and the growing use of artificial intelligence in criminal activity. Attendees received practical guidance on how to recognize and avoid becoming victims, as well as steps to take if they find themselves targeted.

‘Uber Angel’ named Active Adult Center Volunteer of the Year

She’s called the “Uber Angel” because she generously offers rides to She’s called the “Uber Angel” because she generously offers rides to other members of the Snellville Active Adult Center.

That and her big heart are a few reasons why Yvonne Fenn was named the recipient of the 2025 Snellville Parks & RecreationActive Adult Center - Volunteer of the Year Award.

“Yvonne generously helps others, which helps members enjoy our programs, when otherwise they may not be able to,” said Lisa Platt, director of Snellville Parks and Recreation. “She is very deserving and we are pleased to give her this award.”

Fenn was born and raised in Grayson. She has been an active member of the center participating in the Thursday Coffee Talk program, assembling bi-monthly newsletters when needed, working at the bake sale every year at the Fall Festival and cheering weekly for the bowling group at Stars and Strikes. She also serves on the Advisory Committee where she picks up and brings other members as well.

At the ACC she is often referred to as the “Uber Angel.” She has earned this title because she regularly drives several members who can no longer drive. Fenn is also a longtime member of the New Canaan Baptist Church in Lawrenceville where she can be found each month cooking for its monthly luncheon.

Those who know her said Fenn is a real joy to be around. She has such a big heart for others and is willing to lend a hand to our center or to give a lift to our members whenever she can.

“Yvonne is such a deserving person for this award,” said AAC Program Supervisor Kathi Gargiulo. “We couldn’t offer all the programs we do if it weren’t for dedicated volunteers like her!”

February was Go Red for Women: American Heart Month in Snellville.

On March 10, Mayor and Council presented a proclamation to American Heart Association Heart Valve Ambassador Kimberly Goodloe that encourages residents to participate in Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day and to “Go Red” to raise awareness for heart disease and the steps all can take to prevent it.

In 2003, Go Red for Women was launched by the American Heart Association to inform and empower women to take charge of their heart health. The funds raised through this campaign go toward education programs to increase women’s understanding about their risk for heart disease and support research to improve heart health. Go Red aims to encourage all women to make a commitment to take charge of their own heart health as well as those they can’t bear to live without. For more information visit goredforwomen.org.

Snellville Community Church gets kudos for opening doors to basketball

Snellville Community Church was given a proclamation March 9 for opening its doors to the City of Snellville’s Youth Basketball Program.

Since 2023, hundreds of area children have played at the church located on Highway 78 with about 150 young athletes enrolled each season. Under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Quincy Brown, the church was eager to partner with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, filling the gym often with players, parents and coaches.

“Strong communities are built through partnerships between local organizations, faith communities, and civic institutions,” the proclamation reads. “Providing safe, positive and encouraging spaces for young people to grow, learn teamwork and develop healthy lifestyles is essential to the future of the City of Snellville. This act of partnership reflects a deep commitment to serving the community and investing in the lives of the young people of Snellville.”

The Youth Basketball Program will find a new home for the winter season when the new Community Center opens. To register visit snellville.recdesk.com.

City of Snellville Downtown Development Director Jan Harris spoke to sophomore students in Brookwood High School’s Entrepreneurship Program on Feb. 20, at the invitation of Business Education teacher Dean Jackson. She discussed the role of downtown development in shaping a community’s future and explained how public-private partnerships serve as a catalyst for sustainable growth. During the presentation, Harris guided students through the ways local governments utilize Downtown Development Authorities to plan for long-term success—acquiring strategic property, forming key partnerships and coordinating investment to bring new projects to life. Using The Grove at Towne Center as a case study, she illustrated how decades of thoughtful planning, land acquisition, and collaboration ultimately transformed vision into reality, reinforcing that meaningful, quality development requires time, strategy and dedication.

Brookwood High School

A look inside Brookwood High School’s first-ever state-bound mock trial team

For the first time in school history, Brookwood’s varsity mock trial team advanced to state! The following is an interview with sophomore Joshua Whitman, a first-time team member who serves as a witness.

Why did you want to join mock trial?

[Mock trial co-sponsor] Ms. Ollinger introduced me to the idea of Mock Trial, and I wanted to broaden my understanding of law and get a chance to tackle a new style of acting.

Which aspects of mock trial do you find most challenging? Rewarding?

The most challenging aspect was the original case prep. Coupled with doing shows with Brookwood Theatre, it was hard to delve into this overwhelming case every night. Though it all paid off, as by far the most rewarding was performing as a part of my team during competitions.

Describe the dynamic of your team. What makes you all successful?

Well, I’m not sure how close previous groups have been, but our team really feels like a family. Each and every one of us takes pride in calling our team our own. We all have so much fun together, and are always there to comfort each other.

This is the first time our school has qualified for the state competition. How significant is this achievement to you and your teammates?

This makes me feel like it’s something larger than just us. When I actually think about the fact that it’s been that many years of teams

and Brookwood hasn’t even advanced to district makes it feel like we’re part of paving the way for future teams to do the same.

What advice would you give to younger students considering joining the mock trial team in the future? Absolutely consider joining. It is a gold mine of not only opportunities, but friends you wouldn’t have made anywhere else. We have some of the kindest sponsors who work every day to ensure that we have a functioning team. Whether you want to go to law school, or you want to get more acting experience, the answer is an absolute yes.

Congratulations to team members Aleyah Barrett, Haddy Cham, Israelle Clarke, Noah Clarke, Nathan Gutierrez, Ilhaam Hemdani, Madison Heyward, Kaiya Lee, Shree Patel, Cole Petit and Joshua Whitman and sponsors Patrick Ford and Lauren Ollinger on their amazing season.

Countdown to Brookwood’s Class of 2026 graduation

For the Class of 2026, the countdown is on. It’s just a couple months away from the culmination of their hard work over the last thirteen years.

Brookwood’s 45th commencement ceremony will be held Wednesday, May 20, at 8 p.m. in the Brookwood Community Stadium.

South Gwinnett High School

South Gwinnett hosts first ever Career & Trade fair

South Gwinnett High School recently hosted its first Career & Trade Fair, bringing together students, employers, and community partners for a day focused on opportunity and future planning. In partnership with Shiloh High School and Grayson Tech, the event created space for students to explore careers, ask questions, and build meaningful connections with industry professionals.

Hundreds of students engaged with representatives from a variety of fields including healthcare, engineering, construction, business, aviation, and more. For many students, the experience offered their first opportunity to network directly with professionals and learn about pathways available immediately after high school.

The event highlighted the power of community collaboration. Employers, educators, and partners came together with a shared goal: to expand access and open doors for students as they begin planning their futures.

South Gwinnett Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) highlights from 2026 include: South Gwinnett Vex Robotics Team competed in various regional tournaments across Georgia and placed in top 10 position in the 2025-26 season; South Gwinnett young scientists competed with 22 various science category projects in the Gwinnett Science Engineering and Innovation Fair at Gas South on Feb. 27; and STEAM Academy leaders - Dr. Rodney Jordan, Ms. Tracy King and Dr. Phani Duggirala - presented at the Virtual STEAM Leadership Conference at Georgia Tech Feb. 27.

Community Garden @ Snellville

When Is the best time to plant your

Even though this winter brought a stretch of frigid temperatures, it seems to have loosened its grip a little earlier than usual this year. A few warm, sunny days have already started stirring excitement among gardeners around Snellville, leaving many to ask that same familiar question: When is the best time to plant a spring garden?

Those first hints of spring can be both exciting—and a little misleading. One warm afternoon can make it feel like the season has officially arrived. But seasoned gardeners know that Mother Nature often has a few surprises left, and the occasional chilly night or late frost can remind us that patience is part of gardening.

The truth is, there isn’t one perfect date to plant your spring garden. Instead, spring gardening tends to unfold in stages.

Early in the season, cool-weather crops like lettuce, spinach, peas, and broccoli are happy to grow in the mild temperatures of early spring. These hardy vegetables don’t mind a little chill and often thrive before the heat of summer arrives.

“Lettuce and peas are the first things I get excited to plant in the spring,” says greenhouse team member Martha Whitman. “Over the years I have learned that even if the soil is warm enough for peas, if the soil is really wet the seeds may rot before they

spring garden?

germinate. Lettuce plants are more forgiving of wet soil, so it is easier to plant lettuce from seedlings in the spring rather than from seeds.”

Other garden favorites—like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and squash—prefer warmer soil and are usually planted later in the season once the threat of frost has passed.

For many gardeners, the secret isn’t simply watching the calendar. It’s watching the weather, preparing the soil, and choosing strong, healthy plants that are ready to grow.

That’s one reason so many local gardeners look forward to the Annual Spring Plant Sale hosted by the greenhouse team at the Community Garden@Snellville. Volunteers spend months nurturing vegetables, herbs, and flowering plants so they’re strong, healthy, and ready to thrive in our local growing conditions here in Snellville.

Whether you’re planting a backyard garden, filling a few patio containers, or tending a plot at the Community Garden@ Snellville, the plant sale offers gardeners of all kinds the chance to start the season with plants grown right here in our community.

“To me, the start of the gardening season means a building of personal energy as I see all the tasks that need to be accomplished outside and get motivated to do them,” Whitman adds.

Best of all, every plant purchased helps support the programs and continued growth of the community garden.

So when is the best time to plant your spring garden? Maybe the real answer is this: when the soil begins to warm, the days grow a little longer, and our community of gardeners comes together to welcome another growing season.
