Mayor’s Message - Mayor Barbara Bender Can you believe the kids are already back in school? I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and found a little time to rest, recharge, and enjoy the season. Snellville kept the fun going all summer, and there is still plenty to look forward to this fall. Along with favorites like the Snellville Farmer’s Market, concerts, Taste of Snellville, and Fall Festival, The Grove is bringing weeknight music breaks, family movies and plenty of fall activities at Crooked Can Brewery and Food Hall. If you have not had a chance to visit downtown lately, I hope you will park the car, take a short walk, and see what is happening. There are so many places to eat, grab a drink, and spend time with friends and neighbors. We are also looking forward to cutting the ribbon and celebrating the grand opening of the Snellville Community Center building in T.W. Briscoe Park this fall. Watch the City of Snellville social media pages and website for the date. With indoor basketball, sports and a walking track, the center will be a welcome place to stay active if the Farmers’ Almanac predictions of a wet and stormy winter come true.

Mayor Pro Tem Norman Carter has been working with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), area residents, and nearby businesses on possible improvements at the Highway 78 and North/South Crestview intersection. GDOT has said no to the red light many of us feel is needed, but it has offered several other options, including two that would eliminate left turns into or out of either Crestview. After a town hall meeting at City Hall, residents and businesses in the area decided they did not want to eliminate left turns. Instead, they preferred to ask GDOT to consider reducing the speed on Highway 78 to help reduce the risk and severity of accidents. If you would like to weigh in on this issue, please email ncarter@snellville.gov with your thoughts. It is wonderful to see so much interest in the Snellville Youth Council, with 99 applications submitted by students this year. Established in 2016, the SYC promotes education in governmental affairs and encourages civic engagement among our youth. The program will include 30 students this year, and we look forward to introducing you to the returning and new members soon. The Snellville Police Department is now accepting applications for the Citizens Police Academy. This is a great chance to learn more about local policing directly from the Snellville officers who do the work every day. You can find the application online at www. snellville.gov by searching for police academy.

Snellville Police Department Keeping Snellville safe: Crime remains historically safe One of the most important responsibilities of the Snellville Police Department is ensuring that our community remains a safe place to live, work, raise a family and operate a business. Recent crime statistics show that Snellville continues to perform very well in that area. In 2024, Snellville recorded its lowest overall crime total in six years. That positive trend continued in 2025, with crime remaining well below historic averages. Violent crime also continues to remain consistently low in our city.

The Snellville Police Department strives to create a bond with the community it serves. To that end, officers are constantly in the community, building relationships with residents, young and old alike. Here are a few recent community-building endeavors.

A closer look at the numbers provides additional perspective. In 2025, Snellville recorded four robberies, 13 aggravated assaults and 14 burglaries. Robberies were below the fiveyear average of 7.2, aggravated assaults were well below the five-year average of 19.6, and burglaries were nearly half the five-year average of 26.2.

Theft continues to drive the majority of our crime statistics, accounting for approximately 85 percent of Part I crime. The majority of those theft offenses are shoplifting incidents associated with our retail businesses. This is an important distinction when looking at Snellville’s overall crime numbers and evaluating the types of crime occurring within our community. These results do not happen by accident. Our officers remain focused on proactively identifying criminals and offenders who threaten our community, continually improving as a team, and looking for opportunities to build relationships and trust with the people we serve. Statistics never tell the entire story, and even one crime victim is one too many. However, our numbers demonstrate that Snellville remains a safe community. We are proud of that record, but we are not satisfied with it. The men and women of the Snellville Police Department will continue working every day to make an already safe community even safer. -Snellville Police Chief Greg Perry

1. Cpl. Tran assisted children participating in the City of Snellville Summer Camp to complete their Child ID Kits by taking their fingerprints. The kids also learned about different types of fingerprints and how officers use them to solve crimes. It was a fun, hands-on way to learn about police work while creating an important safety resource for families. 2. Throughout the summer, Ofc. Hermel visited summer camps and daycare centers throughout the community to engage with children and provide age-appropriate safety education. Presentations covered the role of police officers, equipment used by officers, stranger awareness, personal safety, and the importance of making good choices. 3. The Snellville Police Department partnered with Gretchen’s Hallmark in Snellville for a plush toy drive. The donated toys were provided to the Police Department for officers to distribute to children they encounter during calls for service and community interactions. This partnership helps officers provide comfort and support to children during potentially difficult or stressful situations. Thank you to Gretchen’s Hallmark and all of our amazing citizens who contributed to this meaningful community initiative. 7

Then, the Chi-Town Transit Authority, a Chicago Tribute Band, takes the stage from 4-6 PM! Snellville Farmers’ Market Legacy of a builder: Remembering Kurt Schulz By Charlene Britt Snellville Farmers’ Market Manager Some people leave footprints that never fade, and Kurt Schulz was one of those people. Snellville has lost one of its true community builders with the passing of Kurt Schulz—co-founder of the Snellville Farmers’ Market and the Community Garden@ Snellville, and a longtime advocate for the things that make our city feel like home. Kurt was a builder in every sense of the word. He built through his profession as an architect, through his hands and his craftsmanship, and through the ideas and projects he poured his time and energy into. But perhaps most importantly, he built community. He had a remarkable ability to see what could be and then help turn that vision into something real, lasting, and meaningful. Kurt and his wife, Gretchen, didn’t just help create a farmers’ market, they helped create a gathering place. From the very beginning, their vision was simple but powerful: bring people together around fresh, local food, support area farmers and makers, and strengthen the sense of community that defines Snellville. What began as a small local effort has grown into a beloved weekly tradition and a cornerstone of Saturday mornings in our city. Many in our community have been part of the market since its earliest days, and they remember firsthand the time, dedication, craftsmanship, and heart Kurt and Gretchen invested in making it what it is today. Their work was never simply about logistics or planning; it was about people, connection, and creating a place where neighbors could know one another again.

Kurt also served as City Councilmen and most recently Vice President of Snellville Tourism and Trade, now Experience Snellville, where he continued his commitment to supporting local growth, community events, and civic pride. His contributions across the city are too numerous to fully capture, but their impact can be seen and felt in many of the spaces, traditions, and community connections Snellville residents enjoy today. Above all else, Kurt’s legacy is one of connection and of building things that matter. He believed in this community, invested in it, and helped shape it into something stronger and more united. The most fitting tribute we can offer may be to continue building upon the foundation he and Gretchen created. It has been both an honor and a pleasure to have been selected to carry on their legacy. Each Saturday, as neighbors gather, farmers share what they have grown, and friendships continue to form, we have the opportunity to honor the vision Kurt and Gretchen had so many years ago. Kurt’s legacy is not simply something we remember, it is something we live. It is in the market, in the garden, and in the community they helped build. And like the best things built with care and purpose, it will continue for generations to come.

That same vision extended to the Community Garden@ Snellville, which they founded with the primary purpose of providing space for families to grow flowers and food for their own consumption, as well as food to donate to local charities. The garden also adds another dimension to Snellville’s sense of community. In every season, it continues to reflect their belief that community grows best when it is shared—through fresh produce, shared work, learning, and simple moments between neighbors. 11

North Road and Wisteria Drive intersection project completed Construction at the intersection of North Road and Wisteria Drive near The Grove at Towne Center has been completed.

The project brings safer pedestrian access and a smoother flow of traffic at one of the city’s most-traveled intersections.

“The completion of construction at North Road and Wisteria Drive will make it easier and safer for people to visit The Grove at Towne Center,” said City Manager Matthew Pepper. Roadway improvements include a 300-foot right-turn lane on Wisteria Drive westbound, a 600-foot left-turn lane on North Road southbound and a 150-foot left-turn lane on North Road northbound. The project also includes new sidewalks, lighting and landscaping as well as upgraded traffic signals to improve safety for pedestrians in the area.

Drug Take Back set for Oct. 24 at Snellville Police Department In an effort to safely discard unused and expired medication, there will be a Drug Enforcement Agency Drug Take Back hosted by the Snellville Police Department Saturday, Oct. 24. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Snellville Police Department, 2315 Wisteria Drive. Participants can drive or walk up and drop discarded medication into the drop boxes. Medication may be left in its original containers

Daye Kebe was awarded a proclamation by Mayor and Council at its June 22, 2026 meeting for leaving “a lasting legacy on the Snellville Youth Council” and exemplifying “the qualities of an outstanding young leader.” Kebe faithfully served as a member of SYC from 2022 through 2026 and was elected by his peers to serve as Youth Mayor during the 2024-2026 program years. The mission of SYC is to promote education in governmental affairs, engage the youth of the Snellville area in civic activities and build practical and effective leadership skills. After attending a Georgia Municipal Association Youth Symposium and learning about community-building initiatives across the state, Kebe became the student project leader for SYC’s Juneteenth Unity Day celebration, helping to advance one of the council’s signature community events. Kebe graduated from the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology as a member of the Class of 2026 and will continue his academic journey at the University of Georgia as a member of the Class of 2030, where he plans to study applied mathematics and sociology. He was awarded the Princeton Prize in Race Relations in recognition of his commitment to advancing understanding, respect and positive relationships among diverse communities. 13 13

South Gwinnett High School’s Rising 9th Grade Camp: Future Ready – High School & Career Launch Camp was designed to help incoming freshmen make a confident and successful transition to high school. Throughout the week, students participated in engaging, interactive activities that introduced them to high school expectations, academic success strategies, career exploration, and important life skills. The camp also provided opportunities for students to build relationships with their peers and become more comfortable navigating the South Gwinnett High School community. Handson challenges and team building experiences encouraged collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Students were able to learn in a fun and supportive environment while developing skills that will help them academically and socially throughout high school. Most importantly, the camp helped our rising ninth graders begin their high school journey feeling connected, prepared and Future Ready!

SGHS Defeats Lanier 29-3 in Corky Kell Classic Triumph What a way to start the season! Under the leadership of Coach Lamar, the South Gwinnett Comets opened their football season with an impressive 29-3 victory over Lanier High School at the iconic Mercedes-Benz Stadium as part of the prestigious Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic. From the opening kickoff, the Comets showcased their dominance on both sides of the ball, capitalizing on Lanier’s mistakes and executing a game plan that kept the Longhorns on their heels all night. Breaking barriers, building community The Story of Valencia Giles and the Lawrenceville-Suwanee School of Music

When I was eight, my parents bought me a little spinet piano. I loved that piano. Music became a place to express sadness and process my struggles. My mother did her best to love me, but she was mentally unwell. As a little girl, I helped her through panic attacks. “Valencia, bring me a cold towel.” “Hold my leg down. It’s shaking.” Watching my mother struggle was frightening. My grandmother said, “Your mom was ashamed of you when you were a baby. She thought you were ugly, and you looked like a boy.” Grandma laughed. I never forgot those words: ashamed of me. When I was upset, my mother would say, “Stop crying. You’re so weak.” I believed her. Like a shadow, those words followed me into college. During student teaching, the students locked me in the band room. Humiliated, the day I received my diploma was the same day I walked away from music. After my family moved to Georgia, I reluctantly became a preschool music teacher. When I got sick, the director fired me and kept the substitute. Tears streamed down my face, but once my heart got off the floor, I told my husband, “I’m going to work for myself.” My kids and I invited the neighbors to our home, and I taught my first lessons on that spinet piano, in our closed-in garage. When my mother suffered a stroke, we moved the school out of our home to care for her. That led to the opening of the Lawrenceville-Suwanee School of Music. As the school grew, I struggled to manage the stress surrounding my mother, so I met with my friend Joy, who was a counselor. She asked me to imagine a beautifully wrapped gift box just for me. I opened it. It was empty. 28 28

She said, “Imagine opening that gift every day, hoping something has changed, but it’s always empty.” Then she said, “That box is your mom. She’s beautiful, loved, but empty. She has nothing to give you.”

Suddenly, I understood. I loved my mother, but I released her—from the responsibility of making me feel worthy. My worth was never hers to give. What I believe about myself—that’s my worth. What a breakthrough! That’s the lesson I want to give our students. Whether they play in Carnegie Hall or down the hall, their worth is immeasurable. They are amazing before they ever do a thing. My goal is simple: to pour value into others. That’s why our school serves the community and inspires students through music and art lessons. Today, we are blessed to serve over 1,200 students. And then came Snellville—the ribbon cutting of our third location. I told the crowd, “We’re going to cut a ribbon today, but it’s also for you. This ribbon represents a barrier, and when you cut it, what you’re saying is, you’re going to break through different places in your life.” We celebrated as a community, and that ribbon represented every barrier I overcame. I felt immense gratitude. No empty boxes here. Community Garden @ Snellville

A garden renewed, a community growing

By Charlene Britt Community Garden Coordinator There’s something special about a garden in the fall. As the days begin to cool and a new growing season approaches, there is a sense of anticipation, and at the Community Garden@Snellville, that excitement is already taking root. Visitors to the garden this fall will notice a fresh new look at the entrance, thanks to recent improvements that have given the garden entrance, sign and gazebo a beautiful makeover. The improvements have refreshed this welcoming space and created an inviting first impression for gardeners, visitors and everyone who enjoys being part of this special community space. The gazebo, a familiar gathering place within the garden, has also received some much-needed attention, bringing new life to an area that has long been part of the garden’s charm. Together, the improvements provide a refreshed and welcoming entrance that feels especially fitting as the garden prepares to turn the page to a new season. And there is already plenty happening behind the scenes. The Community Garden greenhouse team is hard at work preparing for one of the garden’s most eagerly anticipated traditions, the Annual Fall Plant Sale. Seeds are being planted and nurtured in the greenhouse now, with hopes of producing a wonderful selection of plants for gardeners to take home and add to their own fall gardens. This year’s plant sale will be held at both the Community Garden greenhouse and the Snellville Farmers Market, giving 34 34

local gardeners two convenient opportunities to find something new to grow. For those who look forward to the plant sale each year, the work happening now is an exciting glimpse of what’s to come. What begins as tiny seeds in the greenhouse will soon become healthy young plants ready to find their way into gardens throughout our community. The renovations and the greenhouse preparations are more than just improvements and planting projects. They represent what the Community Garden@ Snellville is all about, creating a welcoming place where people can gather, grow, learn and share a love of gardening. We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Terry Kori and Landy’s Superior Painting for their hard work, craftsmanship and exceptional talents. Their dedication and attention to detail played an important role in bringing these projects to life and helping give the garden its fresh new look. As fall approaches, the garden is looking refreshed, the greenhouse is growing, and a new season is taking root. Brookwood High School Coach Parham earns 100th career win Brookwood High History Teacher and Softball Coach Casey Parham got win 100 this past month. Let’s #GiddyUp and learn a little more about him! How long have you been coaching? I’ve been coaching high school athletics for 11 years. I started at Lambert High School in 2016 coaching baseball and softball. I was lucky enough to make my way over to Brookwood in 2018 where I was an assistant coach in both baseball and softball where I was able to learn under two incredible Head Coaches (Titus Martin and Jennifer Maloney). In 2022, I was blessed to take over the softball program as the head coach and I’m entering my 5th year as the head softball coach. What sports did you play growing up? When I was young, I tried everything: football, basketball, soccer, etc. I eventually found my passion in baseball where I played at the high school level at Mill Creek and then was blessed with an opportunity to play collegiately at Piedmont College (now Piedmont University). Why do you enjoy coaching softball? When I first started coaching softball at Lambert, I thought it was going to be a temporary thing. However, once we started that fall, I was hooked. The passion and energy that was shown for the game was infectious to me. The game of softball, due to its fast paced nature, is the most challenging sport there is, which attracts the most competitive and hardworking athletes. Getting to be around those types of athletes each and every day is why I love it so much. When did you actually realize you were approaching 100, and how does it feel now that it’s official? I really wasn’t aware of it until my wife (Kayla) brought it up to me a few days before. Even then, that was not something on my mind at all when we played on Saturday. Obviously, this is an accomplishment that I am proud of; however, this is not just my accomplishment. There are so many people that play a role in the success of a program: assistant coaches, committed players, parents, former coaches and players. I could not be more thankful for all of the people that I have been blessed with that have put our program in this position. Brookwood Softball has such a strong culture. What are the core values you’ve tried to instill in this program since day one? There is a saying that my Dad (Roger) used to use all the time, “Really good things can happen when no one cares who gets the credit.” That is something that our staff has impressed upon all of our players. Our girls don’t play for themselves; they put in the work and play for their teammates. This idea instills a love and a respect for your teammates where everyone has a role, and they want to excel in that role for their teammates. 35 35

NEW BUSINESS By Brian Arrington, Public Information Officer A five-story, 102-room Hampton Inn & Suites will be built in the city following a unanimous vote by the Mayor and Council earlier this year. The 64,400-square-foot building will be located in Park Place, a development located at the corner of Pharrs Road and Scenic Highway which recently saw the grand opening of Cracker Barrel, Freddie’s, Zaxby’s and Aspen Dental. There had been concerns the hotel would cause traffic issues at the busy intersection, but, according to the developers, daily trips would be reduced by nearly two thirds of what was previously approved for a 12,000-square-foot restaurant.

Election 2026 Next Generation 911 up for vote statewide in November election In November 2026, Georgia voters will have the chance to weigh in on a constitutional amendment to create a dedicated state fund for Next Generation 911 (NG911). A “yes” vote would allow the state legislature to set up the Georgia Next Generation 9-1-1 Fund. This fund would be used to modernize the state’s emergency 911 communications system, making it more reliable and able to handle not just voice calls, but also providing text messages, images, and videos directly to dispatchers in emergencies. The current system, created in 1968, was developed to locate calls from traditional landlines specific addresses. However, now more than 80% of calls are originating from wireless devices which makes it harder to pinpoint a location. These changes mean faster response times, stronger coordination, and more reliable service that enhances public safety in communities of every size. The amendment doesn’t introduce a new 911 fee, but it would let existing fee revenues go into the fund, ensuring stable funding for these upgrades.
