Celebrating 100 years of Snellville’s past, present and future
It is a great time to be in Snellville. We just celebrated 100 years of being a city in August and we are looking forward to the next century of being a part of making our hometown a great place to live, work and play. Thanks to everyone who came out to the Centennial Celebration.
The Grove at Towne Center is taking shape every day with new and exciting additions to our new downtown development. The new library is set to open in midSeptember and announcements have been made about the future dining and shopping opportunities that will open soon. This dream is now moving towards becoming complete.
We still have a very active fall and winter season planned. The International Taste of Snellville will be held on Sept. 16 and, of course, the Snellville Fall Festival will be held on Oct. 14 on the Snellville Towne Green. We are looking forward to some cooler fall weather and we hope to see you at the STAT events.
Great things are happening in Snellville. We are glad to be a part of our great city.

Mayor’s Message - Mayor Barbara Bender
I hope you had an opportunity to join in the celebration of the 100th Birthday of the City of Snellville held on Aug. 18 and 19. It was a fun event and many past city councilmembers and mayors came to help us celebrate. Check out the pictures in this issue.
We are kicking off our next 100 years with a five-year update to the 2045 Comprehensive Plan. This plan update will refine our vision for city development and will guide future decisions. I cannot emphasize enough how important this plan document is in the city decisionmaking process. Please provide your thoughts and ideas as we move through this public process. Sign up for the email list at Snellville2045.org to stay informed of any meetings and surveys. The current plan is also there for your review.
The bronze statues of Thomas Snell and James Sawyer were unveiled on the promenade of The Grove in front of the new library. Snell and Sawyer founded the city and started what has been a long and prosperous road to today. The E.R. Snell Family Foundation generously donated this public art installation and we thank them for their support. Descendants from both families were on hand for the unveiling on Aug. 18.
Snellville Public Works
As the two retail/residential buildings on Clower Street are in the final phase of construction, you will see dirt moving once more. Next up is the Market building that will house some combination of restaurant and potential retail with event space on the second floor.
I am grateful to have served you for the past five years as your Mayor and look forward to continuing as Mayor for the next term. Qualifying for city elections ended on Aug. 23, and I have no opposition. The support of the community for what the city is doing has been overwhelming and I plan to keep the momentum going. There are good candidates in the race for the council posts 1 and 5 and I hope that those of you within the city limits will take some time to get to know and support those that align with your vision for the city. Election Day is Nov. 7. Check the city website for advanced voting dates and hours.

SCPAAA raises $6,000 for Snellville Police Department at golf tournament
On Aug. 14, the Snellville Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association held its annual Blue Light Golf Tournament at the Monroe Golf & Country Club.
The Alumni are citizens who have attended one of the Snellville Police Department’s Academy classes designed to give our community members a taste of what it’s like to wear the badge. Once they successfully complete the course, they have the option to join the Alumni Association.
The Association holds several events throughout the year to raise funds that directly assist the department. In return, they receive more in depth training and camaraderie with the SPD family.
Food was provided by Chik-fil-A with the option to participate in the extensive raffle at the end of the event. The weather was fantastic and everyone enjoyed themselves. We are happy to report that the Alumni raised over $6,000! Thank you to everyone that worked so hard to make this happen, particularly Ms. Mary Fergus who worked non-stop to ensure everyone enjoyed themselves.
Sgt. Myesha Finney and the Snellville Police Department were honored by Shiloh High School and asked to throw out the first pitch of a home baseball game recently.

The Grove at Towne Center
Inside new developments at The Grove
The Grove at Towne Center, one of Gwinnett county’s largest redevelopment projects promising a unique walkable downtown experience in the heart of Snellville, has had several exciting developments in the past few months.
Most notably, construction has begun on the project’s signature building, The Market, and several key retailers have been announced. Other aspects of the project are also progressing along as the highly anticipated development steadily moves towards completion.
The Market will be a place to connect, shop and play as the home of a distinctly sophisticated multi-use dining, entertainment and event space. The City of Snellville is working in a unique public private partnership with CASTO and MidCity Real Estate Partners to oversee leasing inquiries and the overall development of the space.
As the anchor of the project, The Market will provide a place for visitors and Snellville residents alike to experience this vibrant and dynamic community gathering space reflective of all that Snellville has to offer.

The Grove at Towne Center
Continued from Page 10
“We’re pleased to announce the start of construction at The Market building in The Grove at Towne Center,” said Shannon Dixon, CASTO Southeast’s Executive Vice President. “Our dedication to crafting vibrant and engaging spaces for the community is evident in this undertaking. Collaborating with MidCity to find a one-of-a-kind operator, our objective is to create an exemplary experience for all visitors. As progress unfolds with the library building, outdoor spaces, and mixed-use buildings, we’re eagerly anticipating the positive impact The Grove will have on the Snellville community.”
In addition to The Market, six mixed-use buildings are set to come online by the end of 2023. Several highly anticipated retailers have been confirmed for these spaces, including Marble Slab Creamery, Great American Cookie and a salon, with more to be announced. There is also great local interest in the restaurant confirmed for the complex, Park Side District. The announcement of these retailers further amplifies the excitement surrounding this transformative development.
Several other notable advancements are underway at The Grove. The inaugural event took place at the THRIVE | Coworking space
on July 25th, a business after hours networking event where attendees had the opportunity to tour the new space and learn what THRIVE is all about. Additionally, the Northside Hospital buildings are set to be completed this fall, with the surgery center being open for patients in November 2023. The complex will house women’s imaging, orthopedics and urgent care.
The cutting-edge kiosks that were just installed are sure to elevate the visitor experience at The Grove to the next level. The kiosks will feature the capability to take selfies, play games, and allow shoppers to view interactive maps and city information, making the experience at The Grove truly distinctive and noteworthy.
Stay tuned for more news to come!

Plants to be offered will include arugula, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cilantro, collard greens, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustard greens, snapdragons, spinach and Swiss chard. In many cases several varieties of each will be available.
Members of the greenhouse team include Wes and Lucy Nettleton, Brian and Ellen Hughes, Kathy Keyes, Maggie Van Buren, Karen Hanley, Kathy Pittman, Sharon Noy and Kate Foxwell. These team members have worked countless hours throughout the summer to carefully nurture the seedlings. Team members will be available at the sale to provide tips on selecting plants.
All plants will be sold for $2 for a 4-pack, CASH ONLY. All proceeds are used to support the Community Garden, located in Briscoe Park across the street from the Snellville Recycling Center.

A five-story, 102-room Hampton Inn & Suites will be built in the city following a unanimous vote by the Mayor and Council earlier this year.
The 64,400-square-foot building will be located in Park Place, a development located at the corner of Pharrs Road and Scenic Highway which recently saw the grand opening of Cracker Barrel, Freddie’s, Zaxby’s and Aspen Dental.
There had been concerns the hotel would cause traffic issues at the busy intersection, but, according to the developers, daily trips would be reduced by nearly two thirds of what was previously approved for a 12,000-square-foot restaurant.
“There is a need in the city for a quality limited-service hotel in the Scenic Highway Commercial Corridor as there are very few options for travelers to utilize while staying in the area,” said Planning and Development Director Jason Thompson. “Eastside Medical Center, adjacent restaurants, retail businesses and neighboring residents could all benefit from having a nice Hampton
Inn & Suites by Hilton within the city. Finally, Hampton Inn & Suites, under the Hilton (Hotels) umbrella, has a reputation for being a high-quality brand and product that would be an asset to the city for many years to come.”
And just this month, paperwork was filed to bring an Outback Steakhouse to Park Place.

Brookwood High School
Brookwood clubs closing in on 100 strong
Beyond Brookwood High School’s solid academic course offerings and awardwinning sports programs, is its wide range of club options to help students feel a sense of belonging, nurture their interests, and develop skills beyond the classroom.
There are 10 academic honor societies, all of which carry clout with college admission offices. The more than 10 cultural and ethnic clubs include the International Club, HOPE (Hispanic Organization Promoting Education), Asian American Student Association and African and Caribbean Student Association. Brookwood Science Olympiad, a 10-time state championship program, consistently boasts a roster of more than 60 students each year to compete at local, state and national events. It also hosts the Southeast’s largest Science Olympiad high school tournament, BISOT.
Leadership and service-oriented clubs include Beta Club, SGA (Student Government Association), Key Club, and many of the honor societies. And if nature and conservation is what a student longs to explore, there’s Future Farmers of America (FFA), ECOS Environmental Club, and Outdoors Club. Outdoors Club recently
took a kayaking trip on Broad River in Athens; it also schedules camping trips, hiking, and zipline outings throughout the school year. Club sponsor and teacher Carrie Settles-Livers says that she has had club members go on to careers in conservation, environmental engineering, environmental law, and environmental chemistry, because of their experiences in
the club.
Sports makes the lineup, too. Brookwood Ice Hockey and Brookwood Fencing are clubs that compete across the state in divisions separate from Georgia High School Association (GHSA). Brookwood Esports started out as a club, and once Gwinnett County Public Schools and GHSA accepted it to their official varsity lineups, Brookwood joined the ranks. In fact, in its first two years as an official GHSA sport, Brookwood Esports won state titles. Ice hockey and fencing have also earned top rankings throughout the years within their organizations.
The arts are a big part of Brookwood, and the club offerings reflect this interest and commitment. Drama Club, Film Society, Art Club, Marching Band, and Tri-M Music Honor Society are among the most popular.
On the lighter side of the spectrum, but just as important to tap students’ interests and desire for a group to join, are the likes of Brookwood’s new Crochet Club, Baking Club, and Taylor Swift Club, all initiated by students. All clubs have a teacher sponsor.

Economic Development
TCGS helping feed local labor market
opportunities. One creative way to accomplish that is with our thriving Registered Apprenticeship Program.
What is a Registered Apprenticeship Program?
Registered Apprenticeship is an industry-driven, high-quality career pathway where employers can develop and prepare their future workforce, and individuals can obtain paid work experience, receive progressive wage increases, classroom instruction, and a portable, nationally-recognized credential. Registered Apprenticeships are industry-vetted and approved and validated by the U.S. Department of Labor or a State Apprenticeship Agency.
RAPs enable and energize more employers to participate and provide them access to larger talent pools that have been trained for entry-level to management positions, thereby meeting industry demands and reducing unemployment rates across the country.
Key elements of all Registered Apprenticeship programs include the following:
•Industry Led - Programs are industry-vetted and approved to ensure alignment with industry standards and that apprentices are trained for highly skilled, high-demand occupations.
•Paid Job - Apprenticeships are jobs! Apprentices earn progressive wage as their skills and productivity increase.
By Melvin Everson Vice President of Economic Development Gwinnett Technical College
As far as the eye can see, economic development is occurring all around us. With so much happening, one has to wonder, where’s all the labor coming from to support this unprecedented development?
The Technical College System of Georgia better known as TCSG has one prominent player strategically located in Gwinnett and North Fulton County. This team spends countless hours speaking and meeting with business owners and leaders about the resources available at Gwinnett Technical College that will help make their business thrive, survive and reach new economic heights. In addition, the main goal for GTC is to educate and prepare an educated, trained and well-equipped workforce for existing and future job
•Structured On-the-Job Learning/Mentorship - Programs provide structured on-the-job training to prepare for a successful career, which includes instruction from an experienced mentor.
•Supplemental Education - Apprentices are provided supplemental classroom education based on the employer’s unique training needs to ensure quality and success.
•Diversity - Programs are designed to reflect the communities in which they operate through strong non-discrimination, antiharassment, and recruitment practices to ensure access, equity, and inclusion.
•Quality & Safety - Apprentices are afforded worker protections while receiving rigorous training to equip them with the skills they need to succeed and the proper training and supervision they need to be safe.
•Credentials - Apprentices earn a portable, nationally-recognized credential within their industry.
Manuel Bueno a graduate of Gwinnett Tech’s Adult Education Program was an Apprentice with Porter Steel in Lilburn, Georgia. Bueno was such a success that TCSG produced a video highlighting him as a proud successful product of TCSG.

South Gwinnett High School
Meet new South Gwinnett High School Principal Rodney Jordan
As a native of Detroit, Michigan, Principal Rodney D. Jordan is a dynamic and enthusiastic educator who has dedicated his career to empowering students through exploration and fostering a seamless transition into post-secondary and career planning. With a strong passion for education and an unwavering commitment to student success, Rodney’s journey in the field of education has been nothing short of inspiring.
Having honed his leadership skills in various capacities at ‘turnaround’ school locations, Rodney brings a wealth of experience to the realm of education. His veteran status as a principal is a testament to his ability to drive positive change and achieve remarkable outcomes. A pivotal moment in Rodney’s professional trajectory was the realization that he wanted to impact young people to prevent them from experiencing life setbacks due to having ‘run ins’ with the law. This pivotal moment led him to the field of education, where he embarked on a transformative second career in education after serving in the field of law enforcement.
Rodney’s teaching journey was marked by an immediate and profound connection to the classroom. His innate passion for teaching, coupled with his zest for inspiring students, learning and leadership, quickly propelled him to the forefront of education. His
upbringing as the child of two career educational leaders further solidified his deep-rooted commitment to the field.
The opportunity to join the South Gwinnett High School family in Snellville, Georgia, was a serendipitous match that seamlessly aligned with Rodney’s passions, experiences, and skill sets. His dedication to creating a long-lasting impact and his enthusiasm for the educational journey fueled his strong desire to become an addition to the South Gwinnett community. His heartwarming embrace of the city and the school district as his newfound home speaks volumes about his genuine dedication to his role.
Proudly donning the title of a Comet at SGHS, Rodney champions the ‘South Gwinnett Way’: a philosophy centered around being On TASK, On TIME, On TRACK, and On TOP. With an unwavering commitment to student achievement and a clear vision for excellence, Rodney Jordan and the South Gwinnett High School community are primed and ready for an exceptional year ahead. As a beacon of inspiration and a driving force for positive change, Rodney’s presence continues to elevate the educational experience for both students and colleagues alike.
South Gwinnett hosted a Rising Freshman camp this summer to give students a head start with their high school experience. This camp offered a unique projectbased learning to enrich students’ education and encourage them to think more deeply about career pathways. In addition, the activities also helped our rising 9th-grade students to build self-confidence and leadership skills. Students took a tour of Georgia Technical College.

This is a great way for local businesses, churches, schools or residents to showcase their creative side by decorating a tree to be displayed at Snellville City Hall while helping their community during the holidays.
Stop by City Hall, enjoy the trees and vote for your favorite by donating money, canned or dried food or toys. Each item placed under the tree of your choice will register as a vote for your favorite tree. To make a monetary vote, go to the ExperienceSnellville.com website and vote. The tree with the most donated items and monetary donations will be awarded BEST CHRISTMAS TREE. Help us embrace the true meaning of the Christmas season and make a difference in the lives of others by decorating a tree and/or voting for your favorite. Trees may be viewed at Snellville City Hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
All money, canned goods and dried food will be donated to the Southeast Gwinnett Co-op through “Give Hunger the Boot” and all toys will be donated to the “Toys for Tots” program.

Snellville Farmers’ Market
Farmers’ Market vendors offer up tantalizing recipes
By Gretchen Schulz Councilwoman Market Organizer
Thankfully we are saying goodbye to the heat of the summer and the trees will soon be ablaze with fall color.
As the calendar moves forward into the fall, we’ll soon be thinking about special meals to be shared with family and friends. Some of our menu items for those meals may be tried and true recipes we’ve used for years. But in some cases, we may want to think about a new twist to those recipes.
We talked with some of our Snellville Farmers’ Market vendors and asked for recipes that our customers might want to try this year.
David Humphrey, who owns A & H Provisions and has worked in the culinary industry for 30 years after training at Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago, sells a large variety of dried spices and herbs. David suggests using a brine to prepare your holiday turkey this year. The process of brining involves making a salt-water solution and submerging the turkey in the brine before roasting. This “spa treatment” helps the turkey retain moisture and seasons the turkey. See Humphrey’s recipe on the next page.
We also spoke with The Horti-Culture, our vendor at the market for gourmet mushrooms. The Horti-Culture grew out of a friendship among Bill Corcoran, Austin Taylor and Branden Taylor. They have built a climate-controlled growing barn on a 19acre site just south of the Snellville city limits. They provide high quality organically grown specialty mushrooms, including a large variety of oyster mushrooms as well as Bears Head, Chestnut, Lion’s Mane, Mother of Pearl, Shitake and other varieties.
They provided a recipe for their version of the tried-and-true green bean casserole that is a staple of so many holiday meals.
See the Horti-Culture’s recipes on the next page.
Finally, we spoke with Lorena and Younus Aziz of Lorena’s Kitchen. Lorena is originally from Chile and Younus is from Afghanistan. They offer several items that would add a unique cultural touch to a meal.
In addition to her signature empanadas, Lorena bakes roht, a sweet bread that features the flavors of almond extract and cardamon and is served to accompany coffee or tea in Younus’ native Afghanistan. Lorena also offers a variety of salsas that are typical of South American meals, including pebre, a mild Chilean salsa; salsa verde, a creamy non-spicy Peruvian salsa; and chimichurri, an Argentinian accompaniment for grilled chicken or beef. Any of Lorena’s salsas would also make a nice gift for a friend or neighbor.
The Snellville Farmers Market will soon begin its “extended season,” which begins in October and runs through May with markets held on the first and third Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon in the City Hall parking lot, 2342 Oak Road.
A list of vendors expected at each market will be published in our newsletter and on our Snellville Farmers Market Facebook page prior to each market. To subscribe to our newsletter email snellvillefarmersmarket@gmail.com.

21 ounces (by weight) Kosher salt
1 pound brown sugar
8 bay leaves
3 cinnamon sticks
6 pieces of star anise
2 tablespoons coriander seeds
2 oranges, cut in half
2 lemons, cut in half
You will need a container large enough to hold the turkey that will fit in the refrigerator. The turkey will need to be submerged in the brine in the container.
Add all ingredients to a large stock pot and bring to a boil. Turn off the heat and allow the brine to cool to room temperature. Submerge the turkey in the brine for 48 to 72 hours. Take out, pat dry, and then roast until done.
Ingredients
1-2 pounds of green beans, trimmed
2 tablespoons unsalted butter or oil of choice
¾ pound oyster mushrooms, cut into ½-inch pieces
2 garlic cloves, minced Salt and pepper
Dash of cayenne
2 tablespoons flour
1 cup chicken broth
¾ cup sour cream
½ cup half and half
½ cup Parmesan cheese
½ onion or 1 shallot, sliced thin
¼ cup flour or cornmeal or a combination of both Oil for frying
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Cook green beans in a large pot of salted water for 2-3 minutes. Drain. Heat a skillet over mediumhigh heat. Add butter or oil to pan. Swirl butter until melted. Add mushrooms and toss to coat. Season with salt, pepper and cayenne. Cook mushrooms 3-5 minutes until golden brown. Add minced garlic 1 minute before mushrooms are done. Pull out ¼ cup and set aside. Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and stir until flour is saturated with butter or oil. Slowly add chicken broth and bring to a simmer. Once simmering, reduce heat to low and add sour cream and half and half. Stir to combine and bring back to a simmer. Cook 5-7 minutes until thickened. Turn off heat. Add green beans and toss to coat. Pour mixture into a baking dish and top with reserved mushrooms and Parmesan cheese. Bake until bubbly and cheese is melted, about 10-15 minutes. Heat oil in a skillet. Toss sliced onions with flour or cornmeal. Once oil is hot, fry onions in batches until golden brown. Remove from the pan and place on paper towels on a plate. Top casserole with the fried onions.
