Choosing architecture was by the artist in me. By understanding the various nuances of architecture, I was still an artist; the art of architecture has been about painting an experience for a human.

In the profession of architecture and design, I wish to create things, with a touch of art and a touch of empathy, and a whole lot of enthusiasm.

An architecture graduate with a penchant for designing smallscale spaces and intimate space, exploring and designing different kinds of furniture and refurbishing existing spaces.

01BEYOND STORIES OF SLUM HOUSING

YEAR: January 2022

TYPE: Academic Thesis

This is a project on people-centered urban interventions within a slum housing project, Pullukaadu Housing Unit (Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu). Here, the economic levels remain unimproved, women and child safety is still a question, drug abuse among the youngsters is significantly prevalent and residual spaces are abused to the will of the people in a haphazard manner.

To establish sustainable strategies to improve these informal settlements, a comprehensive understanding of the space, as well as of the residents themselves was needed - on-field photo documentation and people interviews helped to ascertain the lay of the land.

Sustenance in Slum Housing Pullukaadu Housing Unit - Ukkadam

The city of Coimbatore was recently categorised for the ‘Smart City’ development by the Government of India. The state’s Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) is on a fast-track mission to relocate most of the slum dwellers into housing units. While the pucca houses can save the people from a leaky roof, it has done little to improve their socio-economic state. Since 2018, The Pullukaadu Housing Project by the TNSCB, has been accommodating about 1800 families, relocated from lake edges, areas of upcoming infrastructure and edges of railway tracks. In 2021, it looks like nothing, but a filthy, 4-storied slum.

Study of the economy, the society and the environment of urban slum was undertaken in order to understand the variety of needs and potential interventions. The pre-design objectives were as follows:

• Understanding the Demographics

• Understanding the economy within

• Understanding the character of residual spaces

• Spatial-temporal activity mapping of the area to understand the nuances of the people’s livelihood

The entire community as well as the area is given a ‘facelift’. Involving the community as much as possible, creates a deep sense of identity and pride in the people. Art in the form of meaningful architecture is chosen as the theme.

The road edges are utilised to position the retail outlets in the form of containers; the store-front ensures a thriving economy. The accessible roof above the containers can be used for evening classes and as a recreational space for the transwomen community.

The catering kitchen has dining and administrative spaces too. It also has a packaged cooperative milk packet outlet led by the transwomen.

The fish market situated next to the Pullukaadu housing colony sustains an economy of part-time fish butchers from the colony. They operate from makeshift carts situated along the roadside. The pavilion and the carts are designed to specifically tailor the professional and hygiene needs of the fish butchers.

The cow dung fro the cow shed is used to run a biogas plant; the biogas produced fuels the transgenders’ catering kitchen and the lighting in the children and women’s centre. The slurry from the biogas plant, along-with food waste from the catering kitchen and the fish butchers’ activities is used in the vermicomposting shed to generate manure.

The manure is packaged and sold from the retail store along the main road. The cow urine can be sold as well. The retail store also has an adjoining loading and storage area. The milk from the cow shed is sold off within the community from the milk outlet.

02STARRING GUBBALA: SCHOOL OF DESIGN

YEAR: June 2020

TYPE: Academic

This is a campus design project for a multi-disciplinary design school that had a diverse program and designed in fraternity with the Gubbala lake situated in Kanakpura road, Bangalore.

The areas of focus include: design of each kind of academic area as per requirements, zoning different areas according to a multifaceted adjacency matrix, landscape design to bring the harmonise the diverse program and lake-front development.

Proximity to Main Access

The NDBI and administrative spaces are closer to the main entrance. The exhibition and auditorium are given easy public access as well.

ZONING PARAMETERS

Proximity to Service Road Proximity to Lake-front

The academic areas: classrooms, lecture halls, labs and workshops need easy access a service road while also being exclusive

The ancillary spaces such as recreation areas and the canteen, the open air theatre and the library are placed in dialogue with the lake

ACADEMIC BLOCK

The classrooms are arranged to be cross-ventilated; the block contains three open-to-sky courtyards that help cross ventilate all the classrooms while also acting as spots for recreation during recess. The main courtyard can serve as an outdoor discussion area.

On the far left a long corridor leads into the academic block. On the right is the entrance into the auditorium where a series of colonnades is used to a create a grand entrance.

The landscape pockets in the middle create different paths for the user to choose: one that leads you to the auditorium and one that leads you to the campus beyond

03EN-SUITES OF THE HIRIADKA RESIDENCE

YEAR: April 2022 - June 2022

TYPE: Professional, Under Execution

The project involved the interior design of bathrooms in a tropicalstyle farmhouse in Hiriadka (Udupi, Karnataka).

My scope of work was: conceptual design, material selection and working drawings.

The main challenges in this project were tailoring the design to the users of each bathroom while keeping it unique as well as contextual.

An alternate layout for the bathroom with the garden (with a bath tub) separating the main dry and we areas, brought in the possibility of a meandering stone walkway. This can create a more immersive experience for the user.

The lengthy ventilator along with the translucent roofing tiles bring in abundance of natural light for a tropical bath experience.

A few fixtures and elements chosen for the bathroom: a linear drain spanning the edge of the bath area, two circular mirrors in a double vanity, brass lighting fixtures and a rimless, close-coupled WC.

BATTLE OF HOPE: PANDEMIC MEMORIAL

YEAR: December 2021

TYPE: Competition

A design that aims to express gratitude to the front-line workers in a humble and decentralized manner.

It designed as a prototype that can be replicated in the most diverse of spaces: a local market, a neighbourhood junction, or along a walkway. It is meant to sing in harmony and honour, in our daily lives.

A series of different sized and oblong rectangular metal elements reflect the lock-down situation we have been caught in; it is one of: containment, restriction and fluctuation

DESIGN

PHENOMENOLOGY

There are differences created in the path taken by each individual. This analogous to the different emotions experienced by people throughout pandemic. Different experiences are created spatially. A change in space changes the mental state of people, in forms of varying nature and degree. When walking in a path, a person looks out for a central space or a plaza as an a end or purpose.

MISCELLANEOUS WORKS

YEAR: 2017-2022

TYPE: Personal and Academic

Creative writing and architectural journalism have been my passion as well as are my strong-points.

An interest in watercolour painting and illustrations, model-making, and graphic design has led me to teach myself and explore these mediums alongside architecture.

Creative Writing

An excerpt from an impression article on the hypothetical project Museum of Architecture :

The structure tries to solve a multi-fold problem, apart from being a symbol of the opportunities that architecture provides, to survive in the continued environmentally and economically controversial scenario.
