GOOD KARMA FARMS, ALIBAUG The project is a bamboo outhouse at Good Karma Farms in Alibaug.

It has two structres - one public and one private unit. The public unit is where workshops would be held. A storage area is provide for the same.

Bamboo was selected as the main construction material. It forms the structural members- beam, column, rafter.

A wooden platform sits on a stone foundation. It is made of upcycled wood from old ships. The walls were prefabricated off site. They are made of wooden frame and wattle and daub panels. They will be plastered with mud after the entire structure is assembled on site.

A sloped roof with mangalore tiles was selected keeping in mind the heavy rains the region experiences in the monsoon.

Turakhia Decor products were chosen for wood finishes.

TD Coats Natural Oils used for wood coatings are derived from 100 % recyclable vegetation such as linseed, soya, castor, canola, sunflower etc. Minor modifications are done to the mixture only to ease the application and match performance standards in modern day settings.

The products have Zero VOC, hence they are a healthier and sustainable alternative for wood coatings.

Bamboo is used for the light fitting as well. A 5V LED light would serve as a spotlight for the building.

Upcycled wood is used for the flooring, the wood was taken from old ships. The two different kinds of wood would be seperated by a bamboo plywood strip.

K H A R S E P Y A R GIRILAL CHOWK, KHAR, MUMBAI The site is on a corner plot (a private property) at an important junction in Khar, Mumbai. The site was left abandoned due to some reasons. Soon it got converted into a garbage dump right in the middle of the city with people throwing away food waste, construction debris and other waste. It became a hub for rag pickers.

At the same time, it continued to be used by pedestrains.

A big old peepal tree sits at the corner of the site. It provides a lot of potential to the site.

The initial reaction was to clear the “dumpyard” and make a compound wall around to prevent any further waste disposal.

Using the existing debris, stones and other materials a beautiful gabion walls was thought of. It woul have barriers and seats etc. So, a rammed earth wall that supports greenery has been proposed to try and stop this. And hopefully the space can be transformed and given a new life.

The site faces the Linking Road, a very famous road in Mumbai. Thus, the design requires it to stand out.

A tree gaurd will ensure that the area around the tree is kept clean.

FC GOA | CASE DESIGN The firm collabrated with the firm Case Design. The project is based in Goa. Material research was conducted in Goa and then material samples were made. Made of laterite and earth mainly, these samples could be used as building blocks.

A stool made with the technique of rammed earth was also prepared for the same.

The samples used a ratio of 1:2:1and 1:3:1 of earth, sand and stone aggregate respectively.

The Nirvana farmhouse is based on the banks of the river Ulhas on in the small town of Khadavli. It is conceived as a rustic farmhouse reflective of its immediate surroundings in its structure, form and materiality.

The architectural style finds its base in critical regionalism.

It was completed in 2015.

The residence’s circulation path begins through the entrance into the courtyard, opening to a view of the entire farm through the open living space. All the rooms open into this courtyard.

Locally available black basalt stone was used to create the load bearing strip foundation. The walls are made of compressed stabilised earth blocks (12x9x6 inches). The walls provide enough thermal mass to keep the rooms cool in summers and warm in winters. Flemish bond is used for aesthetic purpose.

The open floor plan courtyard provide cross ventilation and unobstructed view of the farms. The flooring is composed of limestone. It is also non-toxic when the building has served its life. It is finished with a mirror polish to act as a reflective surface for the natural light. Certain walls have been rendered with a cement and natural pigment mix. Light colours were used and the surface is also mirror polished to increase reflection of natural light.

The doors and windows are made of solid teak wood with panels and louvers.

The wooden shutters prevent heat from entering and the louvers allow cross ventilation. The openings on the south side have been kept minimal. The house also makes use of the immediate landscape, which reduces heat gain because of the shadows and from reflective heat from the ground by using green ground cover.

Red mangalore tiles were chosen to complete the structure. The tiles sit on a metal frame. A false ceiling made of pine wood planks creates a buffer layer to further reduce heat gain from the roof.

All the furniture and light fittings have been picked from recycled markets and from old ships or old homes respectively.

The site visit to this building was on a bright sunny day.

The somewhat dull, ordinary entrance gives way to the beautiful courtyard and takes you by surprise. A wide overhang over the passages around the courtyard leads to the rooms. All the rooms have grand entrances through the teak doors.

Inside the rooms, the temperature is much better than outside. The oxide colour of the wall and the tiles used in the bathrooms add colour to the otherwise monotone walls. A band goes around all the walls. The thickness of the band varies, being thicker above the door or window opening.

The open living room is properly shaded and well ventilated. It offers panaromic view of the farm and also a little sense of closure owing to the landscape just outside.

The building has a very minimalistic style. The materials, proportions and the selection of wood, door designs, furniture and light fittings add a lot of charm to the structure.

In the recent monsoons season (2019), the region received heavy rainfall and the river nearby flooded. The building was under 3-4 feet of water. The building was studied to see the after effects of the floods and also check for any structural damage over the years.

The building has suffered few damages. A band around that height had been formed. The blocks haven’t eroded at that level but have left noticable white stain. One particular wall looked and felt damp.

The CSEB near the foundation have eroded in some walls. No structural cracks have been formed anywhere in the structure.

The bathrooms wall surface have also gone through detoriation.

P L Y W O O D

Bamboo ply is a new alternative to hardwood timber. It helps in minimising the destruction of native forests. Bamboo is grown in commercial plantations that are selectively harvested annually without the destruction of the grove or stand.

Bamboo ply is stronger and harder wearing than most hardwoods. Bamboo’s tensile strength is 28,000 per square inch versus 23,000 for steel. It can be cut, sanded, nailed, screwed and plugged using conventional woodworking equipment and also offers excellent dimensional stability.

A natural or coffee colour (carbonised) finish is available and a variety of grain types such as narrow, wide and strand woven are also popular in the market.

Oil coating is a kind of treatment which enhances bamboowood properties.

It has easy maintainence.

The company Epitome manufactures bamboo plywood in India using bamboo sourced from Northeast India. Here are samples from the Epitome manufactures.

In the urban context, the firm designed an interior project with recycled timber and upcycled paper tubes for the Studio of CAMP in Mumbai.

The paper tubes were obtained from printing shops.

Paper tubes, made of recycled paper, have stable qualities and are highly durable. In this sense, they can be regarded as “evolved wood.”

Paper tubes are simple, yet powerful and beautiful.

Recycled paper tubes are an important raw material source for manufacturers of recycled paperboard.

Box windows are often chosen for their aesthetic appeal.They have panoramic views, so they allow more natural light to enter from multiple directions.Because bay windows offer the option of having two operating windows, the homeowner and guests can enjoy a nice breeze from two directions instead of just one.

A project at Nashik has a green roof and it is made from bamboo!

Plants absorb sunlight and help to create a cooler and more pleasant climate. For the indoor climate this means that the air conditioning doesn't have to work so hard, which results in energy savings.

The plants in a green roof filter particulate matter from the air and convert CO2 into oxygen.

They also promote the habitat of birds, butterflies and insects, especially in the city environment which is mainly concrete and asphalt.

CONSTRUCTION OF FOUNDATION

The foundation is constructed using stone blocks and cement mortar. A steel base plate holds the bamboo columns. The bamboo columns are drilled to the steel base.

LAYING OF THE FLOOR

Bamboo beams sit on top of the foundation, running across both directions . Wooden battens are laid over the bamboo beams.

Wood from old ships is re-used for the flooring. The upcycled wood is then screwed on top of these battens.

A thicker wooden batten is positioned where the panels will come on top. That way the wooden battens will be able to carry the load of the panels.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE ROOF Bamboo rafters are placed to form the sloping roof.

They are tied to the beams and the brackets support them through the columns.

Wooden battens are laid over the rafters. The Mangalore tiles will be seated on top of these.

Cleat was used to support the wooden batten on the bamboo rafter.

A sample was made to configure the spacing of the battens according to the size of the mangalore tiles. The battens are laid from the ridge and the tiles are laid from the end of the roof moving towards the ridge.
