AN INTERNATIONAL CONGREGATION

Every province of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur has its origin story.

For the Ohio Province, the story began 185 years ago when eight Sisters from Europe landed on the Cincinnati wharf. Everything the Sisters have done in Ohio, and in the United States, springs from that moment.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, seven Sisters arrived in 1894. In 1962, five Sisters arrived in Brazil. In 1963, three Sisters traveled to Nigeria. In 1965, seven came to Kenya. Today, in these places, hundreds of Sisters educate, provide healthcare, establish infrastructure and evangelize.

From humble origins, in so many places, such great things have happened. The generosity as evidenced in this annual report helps explain why.

Here you’ll see the names of those who have added their light to the larger light, the many who have together lifted the work of the Sisters to ever greater achievement. The success in Ohio and the other provinces has in common dedicated people — people like you — who believe in the mission.

Saint Julie wanted her Sisters working anywhere in the world, on any continent and across any ocean. That has now happened. Each Sister is called to have a heart as wide as the world. Thank you for sharing your heart with all our Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur across the globe.

EDUCATION AFFILIATION

If not for the grandparents, it might never have happened.

This was in Hamilton, Ohio. The grandparents, in their own youth, had attended either Notre Dame High School belonging to the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, for the girls; or Hamilton Catholic High School administered by the Society of Mary, for the boys. The first began in 1867, the second in 1909. Both closed in 1966.

The new Stephen T. Badin High School opened the following autumn. In this school, named for the first priest ordained in the United States, boys sat next to girls, lay teachers were the majority, and Catholic education much as we know it today was off and running.

And yet … and yet … something was missing. And it took the grandparents to spot it. It was the charisms of the Sisters and of the Marianists, their interpretation of the faith and the way they made real that faith in day-today life.

The chair of Badin High School’s Board explained it this way to Sister of Notre Dame de Namur Rita Sturwold, also a board member. “Saint Julie’s vision brings an added dimension to the Catholic education the students are receiving, and that’s what I want, that’s what we want for today’s Badin students.”

And that’s what has happened.

In 2017, the school asked to be reaffiliated with the Sisters and embarked on learning and infusing the seven Hallmarks of a Notre Dame Learning Community into the school’s life.

And so fifty years later, Badin students, like their grandparents, ask themselves how would Saint Julie conduct herself, how would she respond to needs, what would be her choices?

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Friend,

Five million dollars! That’s what we raised last year. In the history of the Province, this has never before happened.

Some contributions were large, some small. Some were estate gifts, some came tucked in small envelopes. But in the end, five million new dollars were at work in the ministries of the Sisters.

It’s hard to fully grasp the impact of this generosity. It is not about the dollars themselves — it is about what those dollars make possible, how far they reach, and how many lives they touch.

I see a child in the Democratic Republic of Congo tasting clean water for the very first time. I see an elderly Sister presented with a hearing aid and her smile as she hears anew the sounds of evening. I see a student, scholarship in hand, arriving on her first morning in a Catholic school.

We know we cannot right every wrong. We cannot correct every injustice. We cannot undo the circumstances that bring abundance to some and hardship to others, health to one and illness to another. Yet, while we cannot do everything, we can — and we must — do something. This past year, together with you, we have accomplished much, and the impact continues to unfold in meaningful ways.

Dear Friend,

I’ve heard it said that mission advancement is like an engine that needs to run all the time. And to run all the time, it needs fuel all the time.

Some say this fuel is money, as in money raised, but that’s only part of the story. What keeps the engine of mission advancement going strong isn’t so much dollars as it is partners.

If you look at the success of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, not just recently but over decades — over centuries — you see a constant confluence of partnership. The engine may be the Sisters and their Congregation, but the fuel that powers this engine year-in and year-out, never ceasing, is the goodwill and support of like-minded people, people such as you and all the many donors listed in this annual report.

Somewhere, always, there are people in need. These needs never stop, and so our engine of mission advancement doesn’t stop either. But this isn’t a burden. Not at all. Together we are doing Christ’s work and spreading God’s goodness in our times as St. Julie did in hers.

Françoise Blin de Bourdon was a beloved friend of St. Julie Billiart. Together, they founded the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Both shared a profound love of God and an intense belief in the transforming power of education. COMING HOME

The Coming Home Capital Campaign of the Ohio Province received a large boost in September with the awarding of a $330,000 grant from the James J. and Joan A. Gardner Family Foundation. The grant will fund a new nurse call system in the Sisters’ Mount Notre Dame Health Center in Cincinnati.

The gift brings the total raised in the campaign to $1.2 million, just $300,000 shy of the $1.5 million goal. The campaign is underwriting modernization of the 25-year-old health center along with renovations to the Sisters’ chapel. The chapel serves the Sisters living in the health center and those in Julie Hall.

Gina Huiet, the Sisters’ newly appointed Director of Mission Advancement, says the Gardner Family Foundation grant will fully replace the existing nurse call system which has been in use since the building’s construction in 2000.

“For years now, the Gardner Family Foundation, and the Gardner family, have been so important in the quality of care of our eldest Sisters,” says Gina. “The services their gifts provide have helped these Sisters in the process of making this difficult transition from active and fully-independent lives to lives that gradually slow down and become more dependent on others. But that’s

not to say ministry stops, because their ministry of prayer continues.

“With support, such as with this grant, ministry continues, and participation continues, and the simple joy of community life continues too.”

Other planned improvements that are part of the Coming Home campaign include a new fire alarm system fully integrated with the other buildings on the Sisters’ Mount Notre Dame campus, modernized heating and cooling, replaced plumbing throughout the building, upgraded elevators, LED lighting, and a back-up generator in the event of power outages.

The Mount Notre Dame Health Center is composed of two floors, one for assisted living and one for skilled nursing care. Each floor can accommodate 40 Sisters. While most residents are from the Ohio Province, Sisters from other provinces are also welcome, as are women religious from other congregations.

LIVE THE GOOD

It just keeps growing.

The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur

Live The Good volunteer program began in 2017 and, since 2000, has provided 1,066 volunteers to serve projects around Cincinnati and the country. In 2024, 252 volunteers participated, including 90 new volunteers. Already in 2025, the number of volunteers has surpassed 230 and with 77 new participants.

“Live The Good is offering people that sense of community and belonging,” says Volunteer Engagement Director, Holly Schlaack. “A lot of people aren’t finding that in other places, a place to connect with their faith.”

Live The Good has traditionally been a hands-on ministry and still is. Helping organizations receiving the services of volunteers include food banks, diaper banks, urban farms, a charity building beds for children, another collecting books for children, and many more.

But the program is also expanding by providing services such as:

• Shopping and personal assistance to older Sisters in the Mount Notre Dame Health Center.

• Advocacy such as through letter writing to reduce plastics manufacturing and use.

• Raising funds for the Sisters’ Jubilee Fund, which helps underwrite the living

and formation expenses of Sisters in Africa and Latin America.

“Our core group of volunteers is retirees,” says Holly, “but, more and more, we have whole families involved, too.”

Live The Good volunteer opportunities last on average two to three hours, including opening prayer, the work itself, and time for concluding reflection and discussion, usually led by a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur.

“Everything is always tied back to the Sisters’ Hallmarks, and where those hallmarks are visible in our own lives,” says Holly. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Hallmarks are principles and practices allowing for the faith to be made real in the interactions of everyday life. “Live The Good is a touchstone for people’s faith. It connects them to the Sisters and at the same time connects them with something larger than themselves,” says Holly. “And for the Sisters, it’s a way forward, a way to continue, growing their community.”

INTERNATIONAL MINISTRY

SIXTY YEARS IN KENYA

Harambee – the Swahili word meaning ‘all pull together.’ It’s the official motto of Kenya.

It could as well be the motto of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in that same country as they celebrate their Diamond Jubilee — 60 years — of ministry there.

What in 1965 started with two Sisters and then five more, all from the United States, has now grown to over 30 Sisters, almost all native born.

“We have a lot of new life,” says Ohio Province Sister Gerry Bolzan. Sister Gerry arrived in Kenya in 2005 for a 20-year stay, only now returning full-time to Mount Notre Dame in Cincinnati. Most of those twenty years, she says, were spent in the formation of Kenyan Sisters. (In addition to Sisters, seven young women are at present novices and another four, postulants. Nine are Associates similar to Associates in the United States.)

In the 1960s, and as Kenya was emerging from colonial rule, the new country needed teachers. Newly-arrived Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur taught in existing schools and started new ones which then, Sister Gerry says, were turned over to others. It was all in the spirit of Harambee.

In 2010, the Sisters established their own school in Malava, 250 miles from Nairobi.

The Notre Dame Education Center instructs over 300 students, some as young as three years old, with grades continuing through the ninth grade. Eventually, says Sister Gerry, the school may run to 12 grades.

Several years ago, the Sisters also began administering the Bishop Korir Memorial Secondary School, which integrates hearing-impaired children with other children in a full educational curriculum — another instance of ‘all pulling together’.

For the future, for the next 60 years, Sister Gerry hopes that in addition to increased formal education, there will also be diversification in ministry, perhaps through technical schools that help people learn practical skills for a self-sufficient life.

“It’s all about how we can serve the needs of the people in the best possible way,” she says.

“It’s all about pulling together, working together, worshiping together. Let’s do this together,” she says, “and make things happen.”
