Our Community Dedicated Women, Sowing a Future of Hope A REFLECTION FROM SISTER ROSEMARY REYNOLDS, SNDdeN

after several class sessions discussing the Prophets of the Old Testament, one of my former freshman high school students asked, “Would you say that Sisters (Women Religious) are the prophets of hope for today?” Of course, the student received an A+ in the class, but his words have stayed with me, “How can we be prophets of hope for the future?”

As a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, I have ministered primarily to high school and collegeage students. I don’t see myself as a prophetess, but I strive to bring the goodness of God to those I work with daily. Young people today struggle to define their self-worth within a society full of violence and racism. They yearn for connections,

acceptance of their true selves, and openmindedness to differences. Our role is to be prophetesses of hope, women who accept and meet the needs of those we encounter daily.

The call to religious life continues today, maybe not in the numbers of the past, but in the dedication of women, sowing a future filled with hope. Some say we live with a “Me Generation,” but my experience has been one of young people striving to transform the systems and structures that cause pain in our world. Pope Francis spoke to the youth at World Youth Day, saying, “God sees how good you are. He alone knows what he has sown in your hearts.” Our Chapter Calls reflect these words, “We, Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, are called to sow across the world new seeds of hope and unity; of inclusion and belonging; of invitation, welcome and dialogue, and of collaboration of mission,” (Chapter Calls, 2021). ❊ lef t : Sister Rosemary Reynolds joins Sisters Maria Delaney (center) and Kristin Matthis (Ohio, right) and students at a Boston Red Sox game during the annual high school leadership conference.

Revealing the Path to God’s Goodness at the end of june, Sister Claudia Blanchette, SNDdeN bid farewell to Holy Family Hospital (hfh) in Methuen, Massachusetts, concluding her remarkable 24-year journey as a Clinical Pastoral Educator. Her tenure had been a guiding light, shaping individuals from diverse spiritual backgrounds into empathetic chaplains in healthcare and clergy in parish settings. hfh’s staff organized a touching tribute to honor Sister Claudia’s retirement. Friends and former students, profoundly influenced by her wisdom, paid their respects. Even those unable to attend sent heartfelt notes, and a communitycrafted scrapbook overflowed with gratitude.

Sister Claudia’s career began as a French teacher but soon led her to Pastoral Education, where she graced Emmanuel College for three

emphasizes, “must possess the art of profound listening, setting aside personal agendas when connecting with people. They must empower individuals to harness their inner reservoirs for coping and healing.”

Her students now hold diverse roles—some ordained, others certified chaplains, and a few as Directors of Spiritual Care. Through her tireless work and the dedication of her students, Sister Claudia has left an indelible mark on countless lives. She and her many students guide people through their darkest moments, revealing the path to God’s goodness and nurturing them as beacons of hope. ❊

decades. In 1999, she assumed the role of Director of Spiritual Care and Clinical Pastoral Education at hfh. As retirement approached, she passed the torch to her former student, Reverend Edward Frost.

Retirement marked a new chapter for Sister Claudia. In 2017, she channeled her energy into a unique Saturday program for aspiring chaplains with busy schedules. “I used to say I was twothirds retired,” she quipped.

Sister Claudia fondly reflects on her time at the hospital, where she played an instrumental role in molding the future of chaplaincy. “Chaplains,” she

Laughing and Learning in Guadalajara, Mexico

every july, Spanish Education for Women (sew) returns to Polanco, a crowded, noisy, working-class neighborhood of Guadalajara, Mexico. sew is a group of U.S. women who set aside three weeks to improve their Spanish. Locals say that we gladden the streets of Polanco, frequenting

the farmacia, papeleria, and tianguis (open-air market). Families who participate in the Comunidades Cristianas de Base are our hosts.

Mornings are spent at our university, iteso—a relaxing paradise of trees, birds, and quiet. iteso is a short ride but worlds away from Polanco.

The real miracle of sew is the joy of reuniting with old friends and colleagues every year as if there had been no separation of time and space.

New students become part of our growing community of learners and bridge-builders each year.

We meet Mexican women—laborers struggling to start unions and mothers searching for their disappeared children with picks and shovels. Valiant and brave women everywhere make their presence felt. Their commitments and struggles humble us.

sew has written our language lessons about stories of artists, musicians, and famous and not-sofamous Latina women.

There is always time for laughing, singing, cooking, crafts, and field trips. By summer’s end, we know the names of more than 30 sister travelers on this planet. The world is smaller, our hearts bigger and Spanish skills vastly improved when sew graduates return home to their classrooms, law offices, and parishes. ❊

Urgent Challenge, Small Steps, Growing a Movement

the case for addressing the urgency of climate change can no longer be denied: extreme weather events give compelling evidence. The reality can overwhelm us and make us feel powerless, but for our call to “have hearts as wide as the world.” —St. Julie.

As her daughters, the Sisters of the East-West province committed in 2022 to promote the climate change agenda of Pope Francis in his 2015 letter addressed to all the world, “On the Care of our Common Home.”

The most significant actors in this drama playing out across our globe are governments and corporations, but this does not remove our responsibility to do our part. One way we can contribute is through a lifestyle audit.

What follows is a description of what the Province Center Community in Belmont, California, is doing.

The Sisters critically examine the products we use daily in our kitchen, laundry, and home environment. We have tried to find alternatives after

identifying what does not seem eco-friendly and responsible. Criteria include freeing us from dependence on plastics, wanting to move from recycling to composting and applying the social justice ethic of companies.

As part of this review, we look at the environmental impact of products and consider who profits and who is exploited by their production. The small publication Better World Shopping Guide is a helpful tool that poses many relevant questions. Its assessments are not definitive or always the same as ours, but it is a good beginning point.

As a result, we are slowly finding alternative climate-friendly products to replace those we are currently using. Examples include laundry detergent sheets and drying balls for clothes, cleaning products that do not contain toxins and are available in non-plastic containers, compostable plates and cups for large gatherings, and even compostable coffee pods.

A Legacy of Courage Looks to the Future nearly 400 sisters and friends—including Associates, alumni, students, staff, former Sisters, supporters, and community and state leaders— gathered in late September at Notre Dame de Namur University (ndnu) in Belmont, California, for the centennial celebration of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur’s arrival to the area.

Upon finding the beautiful Ralston land in 1923, in what would later be known as Belmont, Sisters spent countless days and hours fixing up the old mansion on the property. In September of 1923 the inaugural classes of the college, high school department, and elementary department commenced their educational journey.

Over the years, these educational institutions flourished, and their roots intertwined with the fabric of the surrounding community. Many Sisters graced the classrooms of Notre Dame Elementary School (nde), the former Montessori School (currently Notre Dame Preschool), Notre Dame Belmont High School (ndb), and

Rev. Anthony McGuire served as Presider for the Liturgy during the Belmont 100th Celebration Day.

The NDB Musical Tigers from Notre Dame High School in Belmont participated in the Liturgy and sang a beautiful rendition of “Hail Notre Dame” during the program.

the College of Notre Dame (now Notre Dame de Namur University). Sisters imparted their wisdom to future generations, assuming the mantle of teachers and leaders within these esteemed schools. From the start, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur have had a wonderful relationship with the community in and around Belmont that remains strong today.

The gathering was a collaboration of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, ndnu, ndb and nde. Festivities included a beautiful liturgy followed by a buffet luncheon and program.

Several Sisters, students from each of the schools, and other friends participated by doing readings, serving as Eucharistic Ministers, sharing reflections, singing, and more. The Sisters were presented with several honors including proclamations from the Mayor of Belmont and the Governor of California. It was a wonderful reunion of old friends and an opportunity to meet new, all of whom have been touched by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and our mission to make known God’s goodness. ❊

Sisters Academy of Baltimore Welcomes New School President on september 13th, Sisters Academy of Baltimore held a special Mass with the theme, “Blessed is She,” to welcome the students to a new school year, celebrate Our Lady’s birthday, and install Mrs. Kaliq Hunter Simms as the second President of Sisters Academy.

Congratulations to Mrs. Simms on her new position!

Founded in 2004 by four religious congregations, the School Sisters of Notre Dame, Sisters of Bon Secours, Sisters of Mercy, and Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, Sisters Academy is

a Catholic, community-centered middle school that educates girls of different races, ethnic groups, and religions, from families of limited economic means, particularly those in southwest Baltimore. ❊

Notre Dame San Jose Welcomes New Head of School the sisters of notre dame de namur joined Notre Dame High School in San Jose (ndsj) to celebrate the installation of Ashley Rae Mathis as the new Head of School.

The inauguration occurred during ndsj’s annual pilgrimage of more than 750 people from the community to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph. We welcome Ms. Mathis and wish her the best of luck in her new position! ❊

Trinity Washington University Recognized for Outstanding Work on Racial Equity and Inclusion in recognition of Trinity Washington University’s work to promote college diversity and opportunity, Trinity President Pat McGuire was one of six college and university leaders invited to speak at a U.S. Department of Education event on September 28, 2023, highlighting the release of the U.S. Department of Education’s report: Strategies for Increasing Diversity and Opportunity in Higher Education. The release of the report and the virtual gathering built upon the momentum of a one-day National Summit on Equal Opportunity in Higher Education the U.S. Department of Education hosted on Wednesday, July 26, 2023. They brought together senior Biden-Harris Administration officials and national educational institutions and leaders to discuss innovative strategies and resources for colleges and students to expand access to higher education in the wake of the recent Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action. The National Summit focused on the strategies higher education leaders are pursuing for reimagining admissions, building affordable college pipelines, and creating inclusive campus communities that support student success and completion. ❊

notre dame high school in downtown San Jose (ndsj) held its annual Women of Impact event on October 13. Sister Rosalie Pizzo, SNDdeN was named this year’s alum honoree.

Sister Rosalie, a graduate of the ndsj class of 1952, has spent a lifetime making a difference through education, pastoral ministry, social justice and religious leadership. In presenting the award, ndsj shared that Sister Rosalie has sought to “empower the dignity of each person and to build up diverse communities of goodness, faith and learning.”

Congratulations, Sister Rosalie!

Proceeds from this annual event go toward empowering young women in their pursuit of stem education. ❊

85 Years of Service

Sister Elizabeth O’Connor (1921–2023)

Sister Catherine Owens (1921–2023)

Sister Elizabeth O’Connor was born the sixth of eight children in 1921. Every month, each child was asked to write down one thing they hoped for such as candy or ice cream. She recalls how when payday came, her father would go out and buy all his children’s requests and they would have a little party.

Inspired by her teachers who were members of the Congregation, Sister Elizabeth entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1938.

Sister Elizabeth was a lifelong educator, serving as both a teacher and as a Superior and Principal. Her first mission was to St. Patrick’s in Lowell, Massachusetts, where she taught for ten and a half years.

After teaching, she worked for 22 years for St. Margaret’s Parish in Beverly Farms.

Of all her ministries, teaching first grade has meant the most to her, “because of the innocence of the children.” Sister Elizabeth O’Connor went home to her good God on October 6, 2023.

Sister Catherine was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, on February 13, 1921, to Patrick Owens and Catherine (McCarthy) Owens. She entered the convent in 1938, seeking to answer the call to serve God more faithfully.

Sister Catherine earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Emmanuel College in Boston, a Master’s degree in education from Boston University, and a Master’s degree in theology from St. Mary’s College in Indiana. She enjoyed a long career as an educator, as a teacher, principal, and Director of Religious Education at several Catholic schools in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

In addition to her time in education, Sister Catherine served her fellow Sisters in leadership roles, acting as part of the Province Council and Apostolic Ministry Team for the former Ipswich Province and, from 1988 to 1996, as the Provincial of the Ipswich Province. Sister Catherine completed her earthly journey on October 2, 2023, at the age of 102.

In 1926, Sister Catherine was welcomed to her family home in Dorchester, Massachusetts, as the first girl after 5 boys. After graduating from St. Gregory’s in Dorchester, she joined the Congregation and embarked on a 25-year career as an educator, serving as a primary school teacher in many schools throughout Massachusetts.

After receiving her Master’s in Religious Education, she became the Director of Religious Education at St. Michael’s Parish in Exeter, New Hampshire, and then as Religious Education Coordinator at Sts. Peter and Paul and St. Vincent’s Parish in South Boston, where she ministered for 22 years. Through her ministry she became a beloved part of the community— one of the local priests called her the “Mother Teresa of South Boston!”

Looking back at these past 80 years of service, Sister Catherine remarks that she has had a good life with lots of friends. She continues to share her spirit of joy and contentment with her many visitors, residents and staff.

75 Years of Service Sister Mary Elizabeth Delaney

Sister Mary (Mary St. Joseph) Doyle (1929–2023)

Sister Mary was born in 1930 and lived in Everett, Massachusetts, with her parents and eight siblings. She had a happy childhood and her parents were hard workers who were close to the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

Sister Mary entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1948.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Emmanuel College and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Boston College.

Her first mission was to St. Joseph’s in the west end of Boston where she taught second grade from 1951 to 1956. Subsequent missions took her to other parts of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Connecticut.

She served as teacher, guidance counselor, and guidance director, as well as service coordinator, healthcare coordinator, and as counselor for the Massachusetts Community Service Corps.

She feels deep gratitude for the presence of her fellow Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and reflects: “I loved every bit of what I did.”

Sister Mary Louise Doyle was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1929 where her mother and father had settled after emigrating from Nova Scotia. She was one of six siblings, three boys and two other girls.

Sister Mary entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1948. Her first role as a teacher blossomed into a lifelong career as an educator, including as a principal for many schools in Massachusetts. She loved working with the children and recalled fondly her time in the classroom.

Looking back upon her many years of service at the time of her 75th Jubilee, Sister Mary reflected with gratitude for her life as a Sister of Notre Dame. “I’m thankful for the opportunity to know these things, and to live with other people who are so good, doing things for other people.” Sister Mary Doyle passed away on July 17, 2023, at the age of 93.

Leadership Team Member Sister Mary Farren, SNDdeN addresses the Jubilarians at Emmanuel College.

Sister Teresa (Teresa Patricia) Trayers Sister Teresa was born on November 28, 1929, in Hyde Park, Massachusetts, to John Trayers and Theresa (Jordan) Trayers. She entered as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur in 1948, following in the footsteps of her Aunt, Sister Teresa Patricia, and her teachers at Notre Dame Academy Roxbury.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Emmanuel College in Boston and, in 1970, received a Masters in Education in Guidance and Counseling from Salem State College. She was a lifelong educator, serving at schools throughout Massachusetts. Of these experiences, her time at Bishop Stang High School in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts, stands out for her. She taught and worked there as a guidance counselor for twenty-four years and she recalls the community with fondness and feels privileged to have been a part of it. In 2018, she was inducted into the Bishop Stang High School Hall of Honor.

Sister Christina (Christina Marie) Trudeau The youngest of seven children, Sister Christina was born in Los Angeles to parents who instilled in their family a great love for God and the Church. She attended the Sisters’ boarding school in Watsonville, California, where she thrived. By graduation, she knew that the Spirit of St. Julie was calling her to religious life, entering in 1948.

Sister Christina studied to become a primary school educator. Her dedication and love of children made her excel in this field. Later, she found herself drawn to the study of Montessori pedagogy, a passion that would remain with her for the rest of her life.

Throughout Sister Christina’s career, she has received numerous awards from professional organizations and has been formative in planting seeds of Montessori education through the training programs she established in colleges and universities in Japan, Hawaii, the Philippines, and on the U.S. west coast.

70 Years of Service

Sister Mary Louise (Catherine Anthony) Blanchard Sister Mary Louise, one of three siblings, was born in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1932. She attended St. James School in Salem where she was taught by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. She entered the Congregation in Waltham, Massachusetts, in 1953.

Sister Mary Louise earned her Bachelor of Arts from Emmanuel College and her Master’s in Education from Salem State.

After her first mission at the Presentation School, in Brighton, Massachusetts, Sister Mary Louise was sent to Salem, New Hampshire, to open St. Joseph’s School with another Sister. She went on to enjoy a long career as an educator, teaching at many schools in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Looking back at these past 70 years, she is grateful for her time as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, and in particular for the community in Ipswich, Massachusetts, where she now resides. above : Sisters at the Jubilee celebration in Ipswich.

Sister Yvonne (Marie Denise) Bondi Sister Yvonne attended Notre Dame High School in San Jose, California, and the Sisters inspired her as they projected happiness and were always kind.

Sister Yvonne entered the convent in 1953, after graduating high school, and later began teaching at Notre Dame Girls’ School in San Francisco. She taught for 38 years in 12 different schools and was in administration for 17 years. After full-time teaching, Sister Yvonne became a member of the staff at Notre Dame House of Prayer in Carmel. During those years, she was co‑coordinator of the Notre Dame Associates and she also received training in spiritual direction and began companioning others on their spiritual journeys.

Today, Sister Yvonne serves as a spiritual director and the coordinator for the Sisters’ Mission Appeals program. She also volunteers at Samaritan House, where she helps prepare meals for homeless people.

Sister Roseanne Murphy

Sister Natalia Carrasco Sister Natalia, a first generation Mexican-American, was born in San Francisco. She and her four siblings all went to Catholic elementary school.

Sister Natalia was taught by the Sisters of the Holy Cross in elementary school in San Francisco and attended Notre Dame High School, San Francisco.

Her childhood was a foundation to her life, and moving from her strong cultural family life to religious life was significant.

From the time she was young, she knew she had a vocation. She entered the Notre Dame de Namur novitiate at Saratoga and it was then that she really began to know the Sisters, to know St. Julie, and to appreciate Notre Dame spirituality.

Sister Natalia’s ministries across California span more than seven decades including as an educator as well as ministering to senior citizens in a senior center. She is known as a well-loved, inventive, and gifted teacher.

Sister Roseanne and her twin sister, Patsy, attended Notre Dame High School (ndb) in Belmont, California, where they boarded in the eighth grade until they graduated from the high school in 1950. They both then enrolled in St. Joseph’s College of Nursing in San Francisco where they graduated as registered nurses in 1953. That year, Patsy became engaged and Sister Roseanne made the decision to enter the convent. Sister Roseanne went on to teach biology, general science, religion

and English at her alma mater, ndb.

Later she found her “true teaching home” at the College of Notre Dame (now Notre Dame de Namur University), also in Belmont. Sister Roseanne served as chair for the Behavioral Science Department for 37 years, as Director of Alumni Relations and as Executive Director of Planned Giving, and is the author of several books.

Sister Roseanne is now retired and living in community with other Sisters at the Province Center in Belmont.

Sister Marie Catherine Pero Sister Marie Pero was born on Labor Day in 1936, the middle child, between an older brother and a younger sister. She attended St. Joseph’s School in Somerville, Massachusetts, where the Sisters had a great influence on the young Sister Marie. When she was in the seventh grade, she asked her father if it would be okay for her to enter the convent after graduation and he replied, “There is nothing I would rather see you do.”

Upon entering the Congregation, Sister Marie Pero’s first mission was to Notre Dame Academy in Roxbury, Massachusetts. She taught music for many years and loved putting on shows and concerts. One year she was asked to teach one English class a day to 5th graders. With this experience, she realized that she loved teaching more than music.

Reflecting on the past 70 years, she says she has much for which to be grateful.

Sister Francis Timothy Quinn Sister Francis first met the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur as a student at Cardinal Cushing High School in South Boston. Immediately, she felt drawn to them. “The friendliness, the joy, and the caring that each Sister had for the students was just radiant,” she recalls.

In 1953, immediately after graduating high school, Sister Francis entered the Congregation.

She earned her Bachelor’s in Education at Emmanuel College and began her first mission as a kindergarten teacher in Boston’s North End, with 60 students in her class!

Teaching gave Sister Francis great joy and she went on to have a long, rewarding career as an educator at many schools throughout Massachusetts including 28 years at St. John’s in Beverly.

She is deeply thankful for the time she spent as an educator. “This is what I believed in: I was to teach the children and open up a world of wonder.”

Sister Michela Sheehan One of 13 children, Sister Michela’s early years were spent in the small lumber town of Eureka, California, before her family moved to San Jose, California, where she attended Notre Dame High School and met the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

She became a Sister in 1953 and, for her first 28 years of ministry, Sister Michela taught and administered in elementary schools in California, Washington and Oregon.

She is particularly fond of her years working at Mother of Sorrows School in Los Angeles. She and some other Sisters also started the La Posada shelter in the Sisters’ convent in Los Angeles.

After teaching for many years, then caring for medically fragile babies, she became a foster mother. She also served five years in Nigeria helping Sisters and supervising the work of the lay teachers. She now works part-time in the ER department at a local hospital in the Sacramento, California area.

Sister Patricia (Maureen St. Patrick) Butler Born in Boston, Sister Patty grew up in Chelsea, Massachusetts. She attended Cardinal Cushing High School where she met the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. She entered the Congregation at Ipswich, Massachusetts, in 1963.

She received a Bachelor’s in English and Teacher Education at Emmanuel College in Boston and a Master’s in Teaching and Behavioral Sciences from Bridgewater State College.

After seventeen years of teaching and administration in the Archdiocese of Boston Schools, Sister Patty ministered in Congregational service for the next 22 years, including as a member of Project Nicaragua, Director of the International Office for Africa and Latin America, and in the Congregational Office of Mission Support.

Sister Patty next worked as Director of Mission Advancement with the Holy Union Sisters.

Today Sister Patty continues to share her life experiences in classrooms, with parish groups in adult faith formation and through faith sharing and reflection.

Sister Ann Marie (Rose St. John) Daly Sister Ann Marie, the oldest of five children, grew up in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Following high school, she attended Emmanuel College in Boston where she decided to enter as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur. She was struck by the happiness that the Sisters she knew seemed to exude.

Sister Ann has enjoyed a long and fruitful career as an educator, teaching everything from grade school to college.

Our Lady of the Elms, in Chicopee, Massachusetts, where she worked with both undergraduate and graduate students on writing and the teaching of writing. She also began a tutorial center for students experiencing difficulties.

At the time of her retirement, she was an Associate Professor of Education Emerita. She is also the author of two books of poetry. Sister Ann now teaches a course on memoir writing at Fuller Village in Milton, Massachusetts.

Sister Phyllis (Philip Marie) D’Anna

Sister Mary (Mary Elizabeth) Friel

The eldest of five, Sister Phyllis “Phil” enjoyed a lively home life. From a young age she felt a strong call to serve God and, after graduating from Notre Dame High School in San Jose, she entered the novitiate in Saratoga, California, in 1963.

From teaching in schools across California and Washington to helping build and staff a Zen Monastery Interfaith Peace Center, Sister Phil has served in a diverse range of important ministries. She worked with infirm Sisters, served as the administrative assistant for the California Provincial Leadership Team, and as Support Coordinator for the Sisters in the western region.

Sister Phil has volunteered at the Zen Center’s Living Compassion Compound in Kantolomba, Zambia, as well as teaching meditation and spirituality to groups of women at a local women’s jail.

She shares: “I try to live each moment in the present and each day to the fullest.”

Sister Mary was born in 1938, in Worcester, Massachusetts. After graduating from Emmanuel College in Boston, she worked as a teacher in Alaska. She then returned to Boston, earning her Master’s in Education in Secondary Counseling from Boston College and began working as a school counselor.

Around this time, Sister Mary felt the call to enter religious life and, in 1963, she entered the novitiate. She has served as a teacher, counselor, guidance director, and a school psychologist.

While working for the Waterbury, Connecticut, school system she began to also teach psychology part-time at Western Connecticut State University. This was the start of a 28-year career with wcsu, where she helped to develop their Psychology graduate program into a respected, nationally recognized program.

In 1998, she retired from wcsu. Looking back at the last 60 years, she says that she is “grateful for good health and supportive family and friends around the planet!”

Sister Ellen (Ellen St. Thomas) Keane Sister Ellen Keane’s first introduction to the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur was when she attended high school at St. Michael’s Academy in Hudson, Massachusetts, and, upon moving, graduated from St. Charles’ in Woburn, Massachusetts.

After graduating from Emmanuel College in Boston, in 1963 she entered the Congregation.

Beginning with her first mission to Bishop Fenwick High School, in Peabody, Massachusetts, Sister Ellen has served in numerous ministries around the globe.

In 1981, Sister Ellen and another Sister were invited to start a secondary school for girls in the rural town of Kakamega, in Western Kenya where she served for 12 years.

Upon her return to the States, she earned a Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling and has served in several Spiritual Direction-related roles. She is now co-director at the Notre Dame Spirituality Center in Ipswich, Massachusetts.

Sister Ellen is thankful for God’s constant reminder that endings prepare the way for new beginnings!

Sister Kathleen (Ann St. Francis) Leary

Sister Mary (John Coleman) Reardon

Sister Kathleen was born in Boston in 1945. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1963, taking the name Sister Ann St. Francis.

Sister Kathleen taught first grade at Holy Rosary in Lawrence, Massachusetts, from 1967 to 1969. After this, she taught at Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted School in Waltham, Massachusetts, from 1969 to 1971, and St. Monica in Methuen, Massachusetts, from 1971 to 1973. After serving in these roles, Sister Kathleen began teaching at St. Augustine’s in Andover, Massachusetts, where she continues to this day. In addition to her roles at schools, Sister Kathleen has also served at the Asian Center in Lawrence, Massachusetts, where she worked with children.

The eldest of four children, Sister Mary was born and raised in Boston. She met the Sisters of Notre Dame in fifth grade when she started at St. Augustine School in South Boston.

After making her first profession of vows, Sister Mary began a course of studies in history and education at Emmanuel College in Boston, followed by a Master’s program in education at Salem State University.

Beginning her teaching ministry in Hudson, Massachusetts, over the next two decades she traveled throughout the Boston archdiocese teaching in elementary and high schools.

She eventually transitioned into ministry on the parish level, working as a pastoral associate and Religious Education Director for many years, and then further evolved to take on the role of Assistant Director of the Diaconate Formation Program, supporting women whose husbands were in formation to become deacons.

Presently, she is involved in a Literacy Program in Quincy, tutoring adults wishing to speak and read English.

The Sisters of Notre Dame have been a steady presence in Sister Ginny’s life since kindergarten and, in 1963, she entered this community herself. After earning her Bachelor’s degree from Emmanuel College in Boston, Sister Ginny was missioned to teach at St. Mary’s in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.

She went on to receive her graduate degree from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California, and began serving as a co-pastor in Chicago.

This was the start of a trailblazing career in pastoring, primarily in the Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan, and pushing the boundaries of the role of women in the Church.

Sister Ginny has also served overseas with Sisters in South Africa and Peru as well on the Boston Province Leadership Team. She currently serves as a Support Coordinator for the Sisters in the Northeast.

At this time of Jubilee, she is filled with gratitude for her family and her Sisters of Notre Dame and for her experiences as a woman religious within the evolving Church in this modern world!

Sister Paula grew up in South Boston, the youngest of seven children. She first encountered the Sisters at Sunday School at St. Augustine Parish and found herself attracted to the Sisters and their lifestyle and asked the Principal of the parochial school if it might be possible for her to attend.

The Principal called Sister Paula’s mother and informed her that there was indeed room!

She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame novitiate in Ipswich in 1963 after graduating from high school. Her first mission was as an elementary school teacher at Our Lady of Presentation School in Brighton, Massachusetts.

She later became a Religious Education Coordinator for a parish, a ministry that involved visiting hospitalized parishioners. She later pursued a Master’s Degree in Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry at Emmanuel College in Boston.

Of all her ministries, she is most thankful for her time as a Hospital and Hospice Chaplain.

When Sister Cathy’s father’s work brought the family to San Jose, California, they found the Sisters of Notre Dame at St. Mary Elementary School and Notre Dame San Jose High School. Sister Cathy became immersed in the wider Notre Dame de Namur community and knew that she wanted to become a vowed religious.

She began her ministry serving as an educator, teaching all 12 grades of elementary and high school in eight years. She then moved into parish ministry. Following this, Sister Cathy was chosen to serve on the Leadership Team of the former California Province. From this she moved into counseling psychology and for many years she ministered as a marriage and family therapist and supervised intern counselors in local school districts.

As a former member of the East-West Leadership team, she was among those playing a key role in consolidating five of the USA provinces to become the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur East-West Province.

Sister Rosemary Reynolds

Sister Rosemary hails from a large, close-knit family from the New Haven, Connecticut area. She met the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur while attending Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. She shares: “Religious life was always something at the back of my mind.” After accepting an invitation to dinner with several Sisters, she was inspired to become a Sister herself.

Her first mission was as a school counselor and teacher of Religious Education at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in New Britain, Connecticut.

She fell in love with working with young people and ministered for many years as a high school counselor at schools throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts. She holds a Master’s in Counseling Psychology and School Counseling from Southern Connecticut State University. She currently serves as the Associate Director of the Office of Careers and Professional Development at Albertus Magnus College, in New Haven.

Sister Rosemary is deeply grateful for the support of her family, her friends, and her fellow Sisters.

Sister Kathryn Keenan As a student at Notre Dame High School in Belmont, California, Sister Kathryn was attracted by the warmth and caring of the Sisters who were her teachers.

After graduating from U.C. Santa Barbara—where she majored in Spanish—Sister Kathryn spent a year as a bilingual aide in a poor public school in Isla Vista, California, teaching Hmong and Mexican-American children. She returned to U.C. Santa Barbara to complete a Multiple Subjects teaching credential in bilingual education and, following

her first year of teaching, Sister Kathryn joined the community of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.

For almost twenty years she taught kindergarten at Mission Dolores School in San Francisco. She was Vice Principal and then Principal of Notre Dame Elementary School in Belmont, California, and served on the California Province Leadership Team. Currently, Sister Kathryn does translation work for the Congregation. When asked what she does for relaxation there was no hesitation: “I love to bake, especially cookies and cakes.”

As Sisters transition from full-time ministry work, they remain active and continue to positively impact many community organizations through volunteer work, tutoring and engaging in the ministry of prayer. Thanks to

the generous support from former students and others whose lives they have touched, all Sisters live comfortably, and their healthcare needs are met. Established in 1993, the Notre Dame Long Term Care

The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur are active in 15 countries globally, and members from the U.S. EastWest Province serve in many. A few examples are Sister Carolyn Buhs (Kenya and South Sudan), Sister Sissy Corr (Haiti), Sister Mary Corripio (Japan), Sister Ellen Dabrieo (Brazil), and Sister Sandy Price (Nicaragua).

These dedicated Sisters provide essential support to vulnerable communities, focusing on children and adults in greatest need. To sustain their mission, they require assistance for living expenses, education and spiritual preparation. The Sisters also collaborate with Notre Dame Mission Volunteers to establish initiatives like a bakery in Les Cayes, Haiti, offering food, training and employment opportunities. ❊

Scholarship Support The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur continue to support education and contribute scholarship support to those in need. The Academy of Notre Dame (nda) in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, has a longstanding relationship with St. Patrick’s School in Lowell, Massachusetts. For many years, they have partnered to encourage a Catholic school continuum for students from Lowell, whereby 8th grade graduates from St. Pat’s are encouraged to consider the Academy for high school. There is even a special scholarship for high achieving students from St. Pat’s, the Leo and Joan Mahoney Memorial Scholarship.

Funds raised to support Pajaro Valley Flood Relief Casa de la Cultura Center, founded in 1996 by Sister Rosa Dolores Rodriguez, SNDdeN is the only nonprofit in the Pajaro area (California) that specializes in comprehensive services for the hundreds of families who migrate through the valleys and ensures a fresh food supply. This center, a critical life-sustaining part of the community, felt the stress of unprecedented flooding and relentless storms that have pounded California for months.

Their homes and livelihoods were severely impacted and over 300 homes were declared uninhabitable.

Sister Rosa Dolores along with Sister Theresa Linehan, SNDdeN worked to provide emergency assistance to families struggling with catastrophic conditions. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and Casa de la Cultura Center were there to provide immediate and long-term assistance. ❊

SNDdeN grants support the Notre Dame Education Center (NDEC), Lawrence, Massachusetts ndec is a non-profit community-based adult learning center dedicated to empowering low-income, under-educated adults to improve their lives and the lives of their families. It provides goal-oriented education, skills training, language and literacy development and citizenship classes. Grants also support the Immigration Outreach Service Center in Baltimore, which serves the needs of Baltimore’s immigrants and the Notre Dame Education Bridge Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. Some of the Sisters who live at Notre Dame du Lac, the assisted living facility on campus, minister at the Bridge Center. ❊

Notre Dame San Francisco Alumnae Gathering though notre dame high school san francisco (ndsf) closed in 1981, it is not the end of the story. The ndsf Alumnae Association recently celebrated its 120th Annual Mass and Luncheon, bringing together multiple generations to continue a legacy of service in the spirit of St. Julie.

“The San Francisco alumnae group is remarkable,” said Sister Aileen Bermingham, a former ndsf English teacher and a 1949 graduate herself.

“Even 42 years later, the organization continues to raise money and substantially donate each year to the Sisters, supporting retirement needs and important ministries.”

Katie O’Leary ’70 was the driving force behind the success of the Association for more than 25 years, and upon her passing in 2018, the energetic Kathy Cannon Ferguson ’60 took up the reins. “It’s family because so many of us attended both Notre Dame grammar and high school,” said Ferguson. Longtime Board member Marie Moran ’51 said, “The event was spectacular! It’s incredible to see that much enthusiasm after so many years.”

The 2023 luncheon honored the Golden Belles of the class of 1973, Emerald Belles of 1963, and Diamond Belles of 1953.

“We had a lot of fun at our 50th reunion,” said ’73 class president Rochelle Lindsay, “but we also realize how life-changing the Notre Dame experience has been. The Sisters were dedicated, committed and determined to prepare us for the future. They also instilled the importance of community.”

As the luncheon concluded with the singing of the Alma Mater, these words resonated with all: “When our school days are long past, as long as life shall last, this we ever pray to be: steadfast Notre Dame to thee.” ❊

In Memoriam

We prayerfully remember our Sisters who have died between January 1, 2023 and October 6, 2023. The following brief obituaries are testament to the rich lives that Sisters lead in fulfilling their vocation of service to God. Please remember them in your prayers.

Sister Monica Belber, SNDdeN Sister Monica earned her Bachelor’s in Education from the State University of New York and her Master’s in Theology from the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception. Before entering the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 2004, Sister Monica was a loving wife and devoted mother. She was known for her gentleness and kindness. As a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, she served in ministry as a hospital chaplain in Baltimore and New York. She went home to her good God on June 10, 2023, at the age of 80.

Sister Mary Doyle, SNDdeN (formerly Sister Mary St. Joseph) This year, Sister Mary celebrated her 75th Jubilee as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur. Sister Mary went home to her good God on July 17, 2023, at the age of 93. Visit page 14 to learn more about Sister Mary.

Sister Anne Gabrielle Gagnon, SNDdeN

Sister Anne Gabrielle was an educator at schools throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. She earned an MBA and used her skills to teach business, work as a school administrator, and serve as the Province Secretary of Connecticut. Sister Anne Gabrielle passed away on January 21, 2023, at the age of 92, and after 72 years as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur.

Sister Cynthia Lowell, SNDdeN Sister Cynthia entered the Congregation in 1996, after a career as a teacher in Catholic schools in Rhode Island. After taking her first vows, she taught at St. Margaret and St. Patrick Schools in Lowell, Massachusetts. She was known for her love of teaching and managing the classroom.

After 27 years as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, Sister Cynthia passed away August 24, 2023, at the age of 66.

Sister Gertrude T. Mahoney, SNDdeN (formerly Sister Eileen Gertrude) Sister Gertrude entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1958.

After graduating from Emmanuel College, she received an MBA from Boston College. Sister Gertrude made use of her knowledge of business and finance as the Treasurer of Emmanuel College and of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Ipswich Province. She also served as a management consultant for the Oblates of the Virgin Mary. She passed away on June 2, 2023, at the age of 92.

Sister Edna Maier, SNDdeN (formerly Sister Marie Bernadette) Though Sister Edna began her ministry as a teacher, she pivoted into a diverse and fruitful career. For twenty years, she traveled the country with the Family Mission Preaching Team, offering parish retreats.

She also worked as a Pastoral Coordinator and as a writer and columnist for both Catholic and secular newspapers.

After 67 years of consecrated life, Sister Edna went home to her good God on January 25, 2023, at the age of 85.

IN MEMORIAM

Sister Barbara Matasci, SNDdeN (formerly Sister Ernest Marie) Sister Barbara was a beloved and respected educator. Her early career took her to schools all along the West Coast, from Los Angeles and San Francisco to San Jose and Seattle. She spent many years working in Salinas, California, as a faculty member, Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and Alumnae and Community Relations Director. In 2022, she celebrated her 70th Jubilee as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur. She went home to her good God on May 3, 2023, at the age of 88.

Sister Eileen McCarthy, SNDdeN (formerly Sister Mary Daniel) Sister Eileen entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1955.

For more than 40 years, she served in schools in Yuba City, San Jose, Watsonville, Santa Clara, Santa Barbara, Covina, Saratoga, and Campbell, Calif., and Seahurst, Wash. She was known for her generous and understanding heart. After she retired from the classroom, Sister Eileen served as California Province Executive Secretary, and then for eight years served as manager of the Hermitage Arms Apartments in San Jose, and volunteered her time in support of her fellow Sisters. Sister Eileen went home to her good God on October 4, 2023.

Sister Mary Mulligan, SNDdeN (formerly Sister Anna Marie) Sister Mary was born and raised in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and called it home for most of her life. She became a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur in 1947 and embarked on a career in education. After teaching at St. Gregory School in Dorchester and St. Mary High School in Cambridge, she was missioned to her alma mater, Cardinal Cushing Central High School for Girls, where she served for 38 years, in time becoming principal.

After 76 years as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, Sister Mary went home to her good God on September 27, 2023, at the age of 93.

Sister Elizabeth O’Connor, SNDdeN Sister Elizabeth celebrated her 85th year of service as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur this year. Sister Elizabeth completed her earthly journey on October 6, 2023 at the age of 102. Visit page 12 to learn more about Sister Elizabeth.

Sister Catherine Owens, SNDdeN Sister Catherine celebrated her 85th year of service as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur this year.

Sister Marie St. Joseph Santry, SNDdeN Sister Marie St. Joseph joined the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1950, and began a long career as an educator. She taught at several Catholic Schools in Massachusetts and at Notre Dame Seishin Junior College in Hiroshima, Japan. From 1997 to 2001, she was the Principal at the Holy Family School in Natchez, Mississippi, the oldest Catholic AfricanAmerican School in the U.S. She passed away at age 91, on February 22, 2023.

Sister Kathleen Walsh, SNDdeN Throughout her years as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, Sister Kathleen served in various ministries throughout New England and Maryland. She began her career in education, working as a teacher and as a principal. She did pastoral and administrative work at the Chapel of the Nativity in Barrington, New Hampshire, Notre Dame Spirituality Center in Ipswich, Massachusetts, and Project Hope in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Sister Kathleen enjoyed working with the elderly, ministering at several residential care centers. Sister Kathleen went home to her good God on May 31, 2023, at the age of 73.
