Sisters of Notre Dame in Health Care Throughout the USA, more than 40 Sisters of Notre Dame from four provinces minister every day to improve the health of their communities. Sisters of Notre Dame serve in many facets of health care including: Nursing Pharmacy Hospice Home Health Care Nutrition Mental Health Services Chaplaincy Hospital Administration

Outside of the United States, health care is a growing facet of the international congregation’s ministry. This is especially true in India where the SNDs congregation has four sister doctors, and 26 sister nurses. The clinics where these women serve see up to 400 patients each day.

Here in California, we have four sisters dedicated to health care: two serving as nurses and two as chaplains. In this newsletter, we will be taking a closer look at the work of these extraordinary women, and the lives they touch through their ministries.

As we begin this new year, we thought it might interest our Vision and Challenge readers to learn more about another facet of how the Notre Dame charism is lived out both here and in the international congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame.

Although most people associate the Sisters of Notre Dame with education and catechesis in all its forms, health care has been a part of

Already in 1853 the official Charter of Foundation defined the purpose of the new congregation as “…the education of girls... first and foremost…poor and neglected girls. In addition, it is in the intention of this congregation to take over the care of aged and infirm persons.”

Fast forward to 2012. Last spring, forty-four Sisters of Notre Dame from seven countries participated in a conference on health care.

Countries represented were: Brazil, India, Indonesia, Germany, South Korea, Italy, and the United States, with our own Sister Mary Luellen Boeglin, Clinical Transplant Coordinator at USC Transplant Center, representing our province.

The focus of the conference was to bring together Sisters of Notre Dame involved in health care ministries, to share insights into our charism and its expression through health care, join in conversations with other health care providers, and facilitate collaboration and networking opportunities within the congregation.

The sister participants found their time together rich and rewarding.

They wrote a statement expressing how they see their commitment as Sisters of Notre Dame to the ministry of health care. This statement reads as follows: We, the Sisters of Notre Dame in the ministry of health care, witness to God’s goodness and provident care through the healing ministry of Jesus. We commit ourselves to: • respect for the dignity of the human person • the health of the whole person • universal access to health care • preference for those who are poor and marginalized • unity in our internationality so that all may have life and have it to the full.

Sister Nurses and Sister Chaplains Sr. Mary Luellen Boeglin

Sr. Mary Luellen Boeglin has worked in nursing for over 30 years, most recently as a Transplant Nurse for the Kidney Transplant Unit at USC Hospital where she has spent the last 5 years serving more than 500 patients by monitoring their long-term recovery. Sr. Luellen has spent more than 20 years working with transplant recipients, and is happy to be part of a dedicated team that is giving people a second chance at living healthy lives. “I’ve seen so many successful outcomes from organ transplant surgery,” said Sr. Luellen. “We continue to work at USC to raise awareness around the vast need for organ donations.”

Sr. Mary Angela Lee has served as a RN at Holywood Presbyterian Medical Center since 2008, where she is a nurse in the Mother and Baby Care Unit. Her primary duties include caring for women and babies in the first few days after birth, but she also works hard to be a joyful and helpful part of her care team. Sr. Angela writes, “Whenever I see the babies having perfect little toes and fingers I feel awe and praise God for His omnipotence and Love. I pray every morning before going to work that Jesus Christ will minister with His love through me in the spirit of the sisters of Notre Dame.”

Sr. Mary John Shin has served as a chaplain at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital since March 2010, when she arrived to volunteer. Since then, she has become a member of the staff, where she serves the patients, their families and the staff, helping to meet their spiritual needs. Prior to working as a chaplain, Sr. Mary John worked as a preschool teacher and administrator, but additionally took her free time to volunteer in hospital and convalescent care centers. Sister then formally studied Pastoral Care at Loyola Marymount, and began her journey toward full-time chaplaincy during that time. “Before going to the hospital I pray to God for the guidance of the Holy Spirit so that Jesus Christ in his love can minister through me,” said Sr. Mary John.

After serving for many years as a teacher and a parish minister, Sr. Mary Judeen Julier began serving at California Hospital Medical Center in downtown Los Angeles as a chaplain. Sister is also an active volunteer at Hope Street Family Center, one of the hospital’s Community Benefit Dept. outreach programs, which offers social, developmen­tal, and educational support to about 1500 low-income residents (children, youth and parents) of the surrounding community. Sr. Judeen has completed Clinical Pastoral Education at the UCLA Health System and at VITAS Hospice Care and has been serving as a chaplain for five years. On the following page, please find “A Day in the Life of a Chaplain” in which Sr. Judeen shares more about the ministry of chaplaincy.

A Day in the Life of a Chaplain

by Sr. Mary Judeen Julier It is not easy to put a number on the lives a chaplain touches at California Hospital Medical Center. Statistics may show that we see about 200 patients each month, however, that figure does not include the family members of the patients with whom a chaplain also interacts. Day in and day out, as chaplain, there are countless interactions with staff as we collaborate together for the good of our patients and their spiritual needs. And almost never does a day go by without some employee of the hospital bringing some personal spiritual need to the ears and heart of the chaplain, longing for the spiritual consolation of sharing a personal concern.

Contrary to what many many people believe, chaplains do not go room to room at a hospital, praying with patients or blessing them. The role of the chaplain is not to ask questions, or give advice or preach or cheer a person up or share one’s own experiences and sometimes, not even to pray. As chaplains we listen to the patient (or family member) and then make a spiritual assessment and together with the patient or family, create a spiritual care plan. This takes time, so we are not interested in how many patients we see a day –we are interested in the quality of our care.

Chaplains are hired not only to give spiritual care to patients and their families, but also to the staff of the hospital. Chaplains educate staff, helping them to provide spiritual care by learning to be attentive and observant, and also to learn about various beliefs and spiritualities. But chaplains also listen to employees to meet their spiritual needs. Throughout my years as a chaplain, I have helped coworkers deal with their own grief and loss, as well as shared their many joys.

Chaplains are companions, trained to make spiritual assessments which, for patients, are documented, and help the health care team medical professionals understand how spiritual beliefs influence patients’ treatment decisions and well-being. It is not assumed that traditional religious beliefs are helpful to all patients. If asked 4

“What gives meaning to your life?” a chaplain can receive a variety of answers. Can you imagine what conversation would ensue with someone talented in art or with a lover of classical music or with an elderly person who spends lots of time working in a beautiful backyard garden?

Also discussed in the chaplain’s visit would be the question, “What role do your beliefs play in regaining your health?” and “How can we as health care team meet your needs?” I have had patients who want to listen to Country Music CDs or ask for a sketch pad. Maybe the gardener would feel better if there was a live plant in the room. Maybe the deeply devoted and traditionally religious Christian or Catholic wants a Bible or a picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Having conversations about spiritual needs helps the team understand how patients define wellness and quality of life. When doctors have this information (either because they have the “spiritual” conversation themselves or have received a spiritual assessment from the chaplain), they gain information needed to make effective diagnosis and treatment.

The chaplain does more than say a prayer or distribute Holy Communion. The chaplain helps find out how the patient and/or family member is really doing -- finding out about feelings and emotions. As the chaplain listens with an attentive and understanding ear, the chaplain can lead the patient to go deeper into his or her own feelings. Conversation with a compassionate companion can become part of their cure or can bring healthy well-being in whatever challenge they are facing.

Sisters of Notre Dame Celebrate Golden Moments On October 21, more than 100 donors and friends of the Sisters of Notre Dame gathered at Notre Dame Center in Thousand Oaks for a liturgy and lunch to celebrate the California SNDs 50th year as a province. Following a mass celebrated by Fr. Leon Hutton, the group gathered in the dining room to learn more about the original SND mission to California, and the direction that the sisters hope to take their ministry in the years to come. Thank You from the Vocation Office In my ministry as Vocation Director, I have the opportunity to give talks at a variety of parishes and Catholic Schools. I always enjoy these events and they often connect me with people who had our sisters as teachers, religious education instructors, or parish ministers. One of the

It wasn’t until I was older that I could fully appreciate the blessing of attending St. Matthias High School in Huntington Park. That is where I first encountered the Sisters of Notre Dame, especially Sr. Carlann and Sr. Richardlyn. Both were excellent teachers who also shared their LOVE for Christ.

There were days that I would just look at the sisters in admiration because I could see how happy they were ministering and teaching us God’s great love. Being curious about their faith, I would ask the sisters, “Why did they decided to become sisters?” Their stories of being called fascinated me.

Later in life, I joined Our Lady of Perpetual Help’s religious education team. I was delighted to find out that the Sisters of Notre Dame taught and resided in this same parish! I would frequently hear about their presence in the community and how much those they served loved them.

Later I was blessed again to participate in another service event with them during the Christmas Season, when we all assisted with the Christmas Party for the Los Angeles Area Ministry Project (LAMP). This time I took my son and daughter with me. In talking with my son afterwards about 6

this service experience, he shared that his experience at LAMP was unforgettable. He really enjoyed being around the kids and helping with the games at the party. What my children and I took away from this experience is that there is no better feeling in the world than the feeling you get after you have given back what Jesus Christ gave to all of us, love.

I met Sister Val at my parish vocation/ministry fair. Sister Val and I talked, laughed, and she shared with me about an up-coming ministry outreach program she was coordinating called “Stretch Your Heart.” I did not hesitate to become part of this week of community outreach. My teenage daughter came with me and we assisted at a homeless shelter and community center for low income families. It was awesome to be with Sister Val and Sister Shawn for this week. I could see how God worked through these beautiful ladies. I saw Christ in them and in their work.

The Sisters of Notre Dame have inspired me so much and have become an important part of my life. I have met so many of them and all of them are on fire for God and want to serve and minister to all of us. They are in our schools, parishes, hospitals, jails, shelters, and in everything they do, they do for God. It is a true blessing to have them in my life.

I was very touched when I received this letter from Ruby and grateful to God for my friendship with the family. I will be sharing with the youth group at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, which Ruby directs, in late January; so our connection continues. One of the many blessings in our life as sisters is the people we encounter in our ministries.

Emmanuel: God With Us

by Sr. Mary Leanne Hubbard During the weekend of the Third Sunday of Advent, December 14-17, Sister Mary Leanne Hubbard and Sister Valerie Marie Roxburgh traveled to St. Anthony’s Retreat Center at Three Rivers in the Fresno Diocese to lead a retreat with the seminarians of Juan Diego House.

Juan Diego House is a formative community and house of study for those discerning diocesan priesthood. Sister Mary Regina Robbins is currently on the formation team there with Fr. Jim Anguiano.

Three Rivers is situated only three miles from the entrance to Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park. The retreat center is tucked along a musical river with a view of layers of mountains in changing shades of greens and purples, depending on the time of day. The four days were intermittently misty, foggy, or crystal clear and cold. There was a blazing fire in the hearth in the central lodge room where much time was spent for both contemplation and fellowship.

The seminarians had just finished their fall terms of study and were ready for both silence and relaxation.

Sister Regina is currently teaching a Scripture course with the seminarians preparing to enter St. John’s Seminary in the near future. For this reason, the retreat focused on Scriptural prayer. Each session introduced different forms of prayer using the Scripture readings from the rich Advent liturgies of the day, including the Divine Office and the Mass. Some of these prayer forms included guided meditation leading to imaginative prayer, Scriptural mantra, lectio divina, praying of psalms, and Taize. We also enjoyed plenty of time for exploration outside during the long afternoons, a treat for the Angelinos who rarely see the mountains or the snow. The seminarians entered into the silence eagerly, and the two sisters came back refreshed by both the palpable faith and goodness of the men as well as the mountain air.

California Grapevine Sisters of Notre Dame Share in LA Freedom Walk

Sisters of Notre Dame and Friends at the LA Freedom Walk

January 19, four SNDs, Sr. Julie Marie Arriaga, Sr. Betty Mae Bienlein, Sr. Shirley Marie McGovern, and Sr. Mary Joan Schlotfeldt, and friends Lucy Garcia and Fran Morley joined hundreds of concerned citizens in the 2013 Los Angeles Freedom Walk to promote awareness of human trafficking. Several students from La Reina also joined the walk, working to raise awareness both in Los Angeles and within their own student body. The Saturday morning event was coordinated by the LA Metro Task Force Against Human Trafficking, and was attended by other non profit organizations dedicated to fighting human trafficking. Walkers carried signs through a three-mile course, and engaged passersby with information on how to identify and report suspicious activity.

Mission Update For the last five years, the parishoners at St. Julie Parish in Newbury Park have made a special commitment to help fund the Sisters of Notre Dame mission in Uganda. In January, Sr. Antoinette Marie Moon attended masses at St. Julie Parish to let the congregation know specifically which improvements the donations have funded, including: building construction and improvement, tables and chairs, improvements to farm land, addition of farm animals, new public latrines, and countless micro-finance loans.

The sisters in Uganda were most excited to share the success stories of the students that they have served, including one of their former students who had gone on to study to be a CPA. He recently received his final test scores with the news that he had the highest score out of 300 people who took the exam.
