Dear Friends, It has been a noisy few months at Notre Dame Center as the sounds of construction trucks have rumbled through the alley. Amid the dust and chaos, we find hope. The new walls suggest to us that soon enough our sisters in need of assisted living care will have rooms that ensure their safety and security. This is a tremendous blessing.

The completion of this renovation marks a turning point for the sisters in California.

Like many religious communities, the Sisters of Notre Dame attracted numerous vocations during the 1960s and 1970s. Today, we continue to attract sisters to religious life, but at the more moderate rates our congregation originally enjoyed. This variation in population leaves us with unique funding challenges for the future.

As we look forward, we have two main needs: to take care of our aging sisters by shoring up our retirement investments, and to find the resources necessary to continue to nurture the ministries that bring new life to the Church.

You are a big part of what makes this possible.

Vision & Challenge is published tri-annually by the Sisters of Notre Dame, California Province’s Office of Mission Advancement.

Founded by Hilligonde Wolbring in Coesfeld, Germany in 1850, the Sisters of Notre Dame is an international congregation of women religious who serve the Church in eighteen countries on five continents.

Preschool marks tenth anniversary

Sister Carol Marie Papet, site director at Notre Dame Learning Center Preschool, stands alongside her students to address their parents during the annual Christmas pageant.

Notre Dame Learning Center Preschool (NDLC) is often described as a hidden gem. It is literally hidden, tucked behind Notre Dame Center and shaded by a weeping willow tree. Though its location is inconspicuous, the Sisters of Notre Dame have owned and operated it for ten years, serving over 150 families in the Conejo Valley area.

Sister Carol Marie Papet and Sister Betty Mae Bienlein, who direct the preschool, pride themselves on their unique play-based learning program that incorporates Notre Dame values. Children at NDLC are encouraged to build a wide variety of competencies through play including experimentation, empathy and language. The instructors at NDLC promote this kind of play by asking the children questions, engaging them and challenging them to be imaginative.

The end result is a preschool program that is lighthearted and fun, but also prepares children well for kindergarten and beyond.

“Play isn’t about right and wrong,” said Sister Betty Mae. “Play is always successful for children because it puts them in a position of confidence and gets them ready for school. It involves creativity, problem-solving and negotiation, which are vital life skills.”

To celebrate their tenth anniversary, the teachers and staff at NDLC are seeking to increase their enrollment and usher in a new chapter for the school. They also plan to offer new information sessions for parents of preschoolers to help them navigate the waters of kindergarten readiness and overall child development. Hundreds turn out for 5K race The first annual Sisters of Notre Dame 5K Nun Run brought over 900 participants to La Reina High School’s campus on a brisk Saturday morning in late January. The event raised over $30,000 for the Life and Ministry Fund, which enables the sisters to remain in unpaid ministries throughout Southern California.

Anne Interrante, La Reina alumna, race coordinator and administrative associate for the Sisters of Notre Dame, first conceived of the idea for a 5K over a year ago.

“I thought it would be good for us to sponsor an event to bring the community together, young and old, in a fun and healthy way. Not just to raise awareness about what the sisters do, but also to reach out to a new group of supporters,” she said.

On the day of the race it was clear that a diverse cross-section of the Catholic community had come out to show their enthusiasm for the sisters. Runners included La Reina staff, faculty and alumnae, members of the Knights of Columbus, parishioners from across the county and over 30 Sisters of Notre Dame.

The race also attracted families with children of all ages. The largest group of runners was between 50 and 60 years old.

The top overall female was Anika Busby, age 32. Logan Beteta, age 17, of Newbury Park High School was the first male to finish the race. The winners sped through finish line tape held by Sister Mary Amy Hauck and Sister Mary LaReina Kelly. Both sisters said they were grateful for success of the event and excited to participate again next year.

Becoming

Fire Together

The Sisters of Notre Dame have always identified with the image of fire in their lives and ministries. They meet new challenges and find new ways to promote the gospel of Jesus and spread God’s goodness like a fire ablaze. The sisters are facing the same challenges that other religious communities are as their populations age and the number of women entering religious life in the U.S. remains low. As members of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), the Sisters of Notre Dame have met women from other congregations who are renovating their provincial houses, selling their properties, making provisions for their elderly sisters and changing the way they recruit new members to religious life.

“These orders are doing beautiful things. They’ve done their job if lay people are prepared to take care of their schools and parishes. There are communities that are going through closure. But our community doesn’t speak that language,” Sister Mary Regina said.

already administered and staffed by lay people, Sister Mary Regina believes the dynamic nature of her congregation will allow them to respond to the call of the Holy Spirit to change as they have for many years.

To aid them in the process, the Sisters of Notre Dame hired Community Works consulting firm, which has helped over 150 congregations of sisters navigate the changing landscape of religious life.

Mark Clarke, senior consultant for Community Works, agreed that the Sisters of Notre Dame are well poised to make changes.

“We are moving from congregations that were very large to what I call ‘pioneer communities.’ If you go back to the early days of religious life in this country, that’s how it began,” he said.

Indeed, the history of religious life in the U.S. is shaped like a bell-curve.

“The world doesn’t look like it did in 1960 when I entered the convent, nor does religious life or the Church. If we had been stuck in our ways we’d be gone. Our prayer should give us a fire in our belly to go out and serve,” Sister Mary Regina said.

V&C In response to a growing need for leadership, Sisters of Notre Dame born after 1950 gathered in Kentucky in June of 2014 in a meeting called SND Forward. Their goal was to discuss how they will remain available for their ministries in the future.

“Because we are going to need a larger pool for leadership, and because we are going to become one, we need to meet one another and learn about one another. We are being proactive and asking how we can be effective in mission,” said Sister Mary Rebekah Kennedy of the California province.

Donna Fyffe, president of Community Works, facilitated SND Forward.

“We’re living in a pivotal time and place in the world. We are trying to uncover what the gift and purpose of religious life are in the future,” she said.

During SND Forward, the sisters agreed that their commitment to service and a simple lifestyle were of the utmost importance. They also determined new emerging interests.

After the meeting in Kentucky, they returned home to share what they’d learned with the rest of their community. v In 2011 the Sisters of Notre Dame announced plans to join their four U.S. provinces into one by the year 2020. While their decision was still in its earliest stages, a group of four sisters suggested that they organize a gathering to get all 682 sisters reacquainted with each other after many years spent strung across the continent. Sister Mary Regina Robbins, provincial counselor in California, helped dream up a series of 21 retreats called Becoming Fire Together, which took place over the past two years.

“Retreats done well are very powerful. They’re not just for priests

and nuns. They’re healthy for everybody, but because of the nature of our lives, annual retreats are actually written into the rules that we vow to live,” Sister Mary Regina said.

The goal of the retreat was to help sisters feel more comfortable with one another as governmental changes took place and plans to combine the provinces got underway. Sister Mary Regina said that checking in and making time for reflection is important.

“Becoming Fire Together was created in response to our movement to become one province,” she said, “We wanted to make sure it had a spiritual underpinning.”

Sisters in each province had attended various talks, renewals and retreats together and apart, but they had never come together for the sole purpose of strengthening their relationships with each other. By the end of 2014, two thirds of all Sisters of Notre Dame in the U.S. had participated in the retreat. Communication between the provinces increased as sisters emailed one another, remembered each other’s birthdays and talked about milestones in their ministries.

Of course, most of the sisters know each other well. Those serving in leadership positions and ministries abroad have had opportunities to travel between the provinces, but others have not. Becoming Fire Together allowed them to connect with sisters in other states. During the week sisters enjoyed music, prayer, recreation and conversation.

“We’d stand up in front of each other during meals and introduce ourselves and talk about where we came from,” Sister said. “By talking to you, I understand that your story is much like mine because I was called to the same community. In our congregation the idea of fire comes up again and again. It symbolizes love, warmth, energy and new life.”

In November, Sister Marie Julie Bruss returned with a grateful heart from her first trip outside of the continent.

She spent a month visiting project sites in India and Thailand that have received grants from the Hilton Fund for Sisters. Next, she’ll help the Fund decide which projects are sustainable and which will need more funding.

Vision & Challenge: You started working for the Fund in September of 2013. What do you do as operations manager ?

Sister Marie Julie Bruss: I oversee our day-to-day finances, the distribution of work and the grant-making operation.

That includes preparing grants for the board to review. We give around 600 grants per year that range in size from $1,000 to $10,000 and sometimes $25,000.

V&C: What do you enjoy about your job?

SR: I like variety in my work, I like the environment I work in and the people I work with. I like the discussions we have as a staff about the ministries of the sisters and how we can help them to think in terms of sustainability, so they don’t have to depend on grants.

V&C: What kinds of projects did you see?

SR: The biggest project we saw was the National Domestic Workers Movement in India. It’s a grassroots movement that has consistently empowered workers. In some states they have unionized to raise the minimum wage.

We also visited the projects of the Good Shepherd Sisters in Thailand at the end of the trip. They have a care center for HIV/AIDS patients to which the Fund has made grants.

They work with healthier patients and teach them skills they can use to earn money to support themselves.

V&C: What happens when the trip is over?

SR: Afterward, we share what we saw with the board members and talk about the effectiveness of each project.

V&C: What did you do before coming to the Fund?

SR: I spent about 20 years in secondary education as a math, religion and French teacher in Ohio and Florida. Then I spent another 15 years in Ohio as a clinical therapist for people with alcohol and substance addictions.

V&C: When did you first enter as a Sister of Notre Dame?

SR: I entered in 1973 at age 21 in Chardon, Ohio.

V&C: What does the Year of Consecrated Life mean to you?

SR: I think it’s an opportunity to acknowledge the presence of those of us who are consecrated in the world. I think for me it’s an invitation to take a new look at what it means to be consecrated.

V&C: How do you share your charism with people you encounter?

SR: I always try to meet people where they are. I have respect for who they are and see the good that’s in them.

V&C: What advice do you have for young women who are considering religious life?

SR: Listen to your heart and what God is calling you to do.

Religious life is more about freedom than you might think it is. Living it authentically leads to freedom of spirit.

Boundless Ministry I n 2013, Sister Mary Delores Gatliff of the Toledo, Ohio province sent letters to parishes in Texas offering the service of the sisters there. Four bishops invited the sisters to come and aid in the crisis at the border with Mexico and in other areas. The sisters’ new joint ministry in Texas marks their first action as one unified province in the U.S. Today several sisters from Ohio serve in the dioceses of Corpus Christi and Lubbock, Texas.

• Sister Kerstin Maria Deubel serves at The Ark, an emergency shelter for children in Corpus Christi.

• Sister Magdalen Westrick ministers at the Mother Teresa Shelter for homeless in Corpus Christi.

• Sister Pamela Marie Buganski serves at the South Texas Human Rights Project and ministers to women in detention centers in Corpus Christi. She also engages in immigration and social justice work in collaboration with the Catholic Charities’ office of immigration.

• Sister Mary Brenda Haynes has accepted a role as the principal at Saint Joseph School in Slaton TX. The school has 42 children, some with special needs.

• Sister Patricia Marie Keefe works at Saint Joseph School as a teacher’s aide and religion teacher for grades K-2. All Saint Joseph students receive tuition aid from the diocese.

• Sister Mary Loretta Pastva assists seminarians in perfecting their English and serves in other outreach programs in the city of Lubbock.
