A Letter from the Provincial Superior
Those of us blessed to live in regions with four distinct seasons learn to appreciate the subtle changes that usher in a new season. From the first crocuses in the snow to the full flowering of apple trees to summer’s rich green, the familiar rhythm of growth leads to a beautiful transformation. As with the change of seasons here on the Notre Dame campus, the exciting changes occurring within the SND congregation are slowly taking shape. The launch of SND-USA, with the reunification of the SND provinces of Covington, Chardon, Thousand Oaks and Toledo, means more collaboration among sisters across the country and more opportunities to serve and share our mission. In this issue of NETWORK, we take a look at the education and health care ministries of the four provinces. It is amazing how God has blessed these ministries, which have separate histories but a common spirit. We look forward to the full blossoming of that common spirit in the possibilities before us. Pope Francis often urges religious to “go to the periphery,” to serve those living at the margins of society. A few of our sisters went to the literal margins of the United States recently when they spent several weeks serving at the U.S.Mexico border. You will read their reflections on their experience of offering the most basic care to migrant families. Lastly, please join our 2019 Jubilarians in thanking God for the blessings of their lives of service. As always, we remain grateful for our many friends who continue to remember and support the Sisters of Notre Dame. This spring, our annual donors’ luncheon celebrated the impact of our schools, including the many schools and religious education programs that have supported our missions over the years. SND-USA Education & Health Care Ministries In the previous issue of Network, the Sisters of Notre Dame announced the upcoming launch of SND-USA. While the four SND provinces of Covington, Kentucky; Chardon, Ohio; Toledo, Ohio; and Thousand Oaks, California will continue their local ministries, this exciting restructuring will enable greater collaboration and strengthen broad initiatives nationwide. Three mission priorities of SND-USA have been identified: • Sponsored Education and Health Care Ministries • Ministries on the Margins • Young Adult/Vocation Ministries In this issue of Network, let’s examine the first priority – Sponsored Education and Health Care Ministries. In recent years, the SND-sponsored ministries of education and health care have expanded to include lay administrators and board members as partners in their mission. In years to come, the Sisters of Notre Dame will continue to work together with partner schools and health care institutions to support their Catholic identities that reflect the SND charism which helped shape these ministries. Across the United States, Sisters of Notre Dame will offer support and guidance to ensure that these institutions flourish as a part of the SND-USA legacy.

he Sisters of Notre Dame have a 169-year history of educating children and adults, particularly in impoverished areas. Through the decades, tens of thousands of children, teenagers and adults have been educated by Sisters of Notre Dame in the US as well as across the globe. This legacy continues today. Total Enrollment at SND-USA sponsored schools/centers: 5,702 Approximately 160 Sisters of Notre Dame are active in education ministries in Washington D.C. and 11 states including California, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and West Virginia. These sisters serve in various roles – from administration, faculty, staff, to tutors and volunteers in early childhood education through college/university, adult education and environmental education. Despite tremendous geographic distances, all SND-sponsored schools share four guiding principles which differentiate an education received at an SND school from other schools in the United States. These principles are: 1. Centrality of a good and powerful God. 2. Dignity of the human person as an image of God 3. Gospel witness 4. Transformation According to Joseph Waler, Principal of NDCL, in Chardon, “The first principle speaks to how we are to teach. As teachers, we recognize we are not the ultimate one in charge of our classroom – God is in charge. Dignity describes how, as educators, we are called to reflect back to our students how God sees them. As Gospel witnesses, our students should be seeing the image of God in their teachers’ eyes; teachers should be seeing the image of God in their colleagues’ eyes. Lastly, we are not just fine academic institutions utilizing today’s researchbased pedagogy. SND teachers and administrators share a higher calling – the transformation of our students to the men and women God is calling them to become.” Laura Koehl, Ed.D. President of Notre Dame Academy, Covington, KY, says each year their school selects a school theme that focuses on one of these principles. “We use that theme

as a centerpiece for school assemblies, activities and liturgical events. This year we are celebrating an integrated education for transformation with the theme, ‘becoming fully alive through education and love.’ We emphasize the role of loving others. Students are required to do service and learn the importance of advocating for and serving the needs of people in our community.” Sister Pat McClain, SND, Principal of Lial Catholic School in Toledo, OH, concurs, “At Lial, every teacher is immersed into our Notre Dame Educational Principles. Notre Dame teachers see each student as a child of God deserving the best they have to offer. The hours spent with students before and after school, along with the high quality of teaching occurring within the school day, is mind boggling. Our students are prepared to make a difference in our world, now and in the future, through their compassion, outreach, education and leadership. Critical thinking, empathy, broadmindedness, caring, and faith are just a few words that come to mind when I think of our students here at Lial Catholic School in Toledo. in Thousand Oaks, California, explains. “Our primary goal is constant: to provide an excellent educational environment that nurtures mind, body and spirit. What has not changed are the values that we as Notre Dame schools see as primary, namely the Notre Dame Educational Principles.” Why parents choose to enroll their children in SND-sponsored Catholic schools today, varies. Sister Rebekah says, “Parents choose La Reina for the strong academics, the caring environment, and the advantages that an all-girls education offers their daughters. Over the years, La Reina has become well-known for its schoolwide writing program, the achievements of its Mock Trial team, and now its Academic Decathlon team and Performing Arts Department.”

According to Sister Margaret Gorman, SND, Provincial Superior, Chardon, “We are seeing our students desiring to do more, to influence their communities for the greater good. Our SND-sponsored schools promote mission-driven faith in action through service and advocacy. Beyond simply holding canned-food drives and sending money to missions, we want our students – even the young ones – to have an opportunity to directly touch the people they are serving.” Sister Antoinette Marie Moon, SND, Notre Dame Center, Thousand Oaks, CA, agrees, “If I could choose one word to capture the NDASLA’s (Notre Dame Academy Schools of Los Angeles) goal for all students it is ‘witness’…to live out what one believes, to live out one’s values, to be collaborative, to use technology ethically, and to be a leader in whatever one undertakes.” SND-sponsored schools also continue to share a welcoming and inclusive culture – open to families of all cultures, economic means, in all shapes and sizes, with every child bringing his or her unique gifts into the school and community. Sister Antoinette insists, “That is absolutely the truth at NDASLA and is one of its strongest selling points. It is not only that students are accepted, but the diversity at NDASLA is celebrated. Choosing NDASLA is choosing to advocate for others, to reach out to those in need, to be personally and socially responsible and respect the diversity of all persons. With all SND-sponsored schools, one overarching goal resonates – the transformation of these young men and women in their classrooms to go out like Jesus did, and transform the world.

CARING FOR THE SICK AND VULNERABLE “ Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world. For, indeed, that’s all who ever have.”

n addition to education, the Sisters of Notre Dame have a 68-year history of caring for the sick and frail. In Covington, Kentucky, SNDs responded to the call to care for the sick by opening Notre Dame Hospital, St. Charles Community, and St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky. In 1950, the bishop of the Diocese asked the Sisters of Notre Dame to assume operation of a hospital in Lynch, Kentucky which served mainly Appalachian coal miners and their families. The sisters operated this facility, named Notre Dame Hospital, until 1961 when a new facility, the Appalachian Regional Hospital, was built just across the mountain. In 1961, again at the request of the Diocese, the Sisters of Notre Dame built and staffed a “convalescent” hospital, located a short distance from the Covington Provincial Center. “Over time, this facility, known today as St. Charles Community (SCC), became totally dedicated to serving senior adults and their families,” explains Sr. Mary Luann Bender, SND, who served as president/CEO for 36 years. “It has grown to include an adult day care program, 62 cottages and 71 apartments for seniors, a therapy department, personal care suites, home care and private duty nursing.” St. Charles also recently launched a program called HANDI – Helping Adults in Need Develop Independence – after a local nonprofit serving senior citizens closed. This program drastically reduced the wait time for individuals needing assistance. Through this program, such items as food, microwaves, rollator walkers, shower chairs, elevated toilet seats, grab bars and wheelchairs were delivered directly to homes. In 1963, the Morehead, Kentucky town’s physician, Dr. Claire Louise Caudill, turned to Monsignor Charles Towell, Director of Catholic Hospitals in the Diocese, and requested the Sisters of Notre Dame take on a new project – opening St. Claire Medical Center as a general acute care hospital with 41 beds. Today, St. Claire HealthCare is an integrated health care system with more than 1,300 staff members including more than 100 medical providers representing 32 medical specialties. It includes the largest rural hospital in Northeastern Kentucky with 159 beds, seven family medicine locations located within five counties, a multi-specialty medical pavilion, an outpatient center and homecare services. Sister Marla Monahan, SND, Board Chair of St. Claire HealthCare, says, “Our partnership with the University of Kentucky and Morehead State University has allowed us to remain independent since our beginnings more than 50 years ago. St. Claire embodies our commitment to serve our brothers and sisters, especially those most in need.

“Our mission is to serve a population that is among the poorest and sickest, and therefore, the most vulnerable in the county,” Sister Mary Judine Lambert, SND, Director of Mission Integration at St. Claire HealthCare, states. “As a Catholic, SND-sponsored ministry, our ‘corporate conscience’ compels us, for example, to address the opioid crisis. Yes, we are going beyond what is required, but that is because the need is so great. When the need is great, the response must rise to fully meet it because that is what we owe the people of our community.” “This outreach is not so far removed from the SND’s founding focus of education,” Sister Judine adds. “It may not occur in a classroom, but this effort is all about education of the health care team and of patients. Success in this effort will hinge on the effectiveness of education.” With the launching of SND-USA, Sister Mary Ethel Parrott, SND, Provincial Superior of Covington, KY, enthusiastically announces, “Our province will continue to prioritize health care that empowered our mission from the beginning. Our sisters will continue to provide pastoral care to the sick, the elderly and the homebound.” In addition to these two sponsored health care institutions, the Covington Province continues to extend compassionate care throughout their region. They currently minister at Superior Home Care in Cheviot, Ohio; Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, OH; St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Hospice in Edgewood, KY; and Rosedale Green in Covington, KY. Notre Dame Village in Chardon, Ohio opened in 2018, as the third nationally sponsored health care ministry. Offering independent and supportive residences for adults 65 and older, Notre Dame Village includes cottage homes, independent living apartments, and unique “small houses” providing memory care assisted living. “Personally, I feel that the health care ministry is important because, through teaching and healing, Jesus expressed his love, compassion and the goodness of God,” Sister Mary Luann explains. “In and through the healing ministry, we Sisters of Notre Dame are given the opportunity to reflect Jesus’ love, compassion and goodness in a way that cannot be satisfied by market mechanisms.” Covington, KY Province:

SNDs offer humanitarian aid at US-Mexico border

The border between the United States and Mexico is nearly 2,000 miles long. From the Gulf of Mexico, it follows the course of the Rio Grande and touches the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. The border traverses a variety of terrains, including urban areas and deserts. Like the terrain, an equally diverse group of men, women and children cross this border daily, whether by walking, caravan or coyote (a person who smuggles people illegally across the border) seeking asylum.

Along with women religious from across the United States, several Sisters of Notre Dame traveled to the border between December 23, 2018 and January 3, 2019 to offer humanitarian aid to asylum seekers. Sisters Jacquelyn Gusdane, Roseanna Mellert, RenĂŠe Pastor and Maryann Weber volunteered at a shelter through Annunciation House in El Paso, Texas. Sister Karen Somerville, and her sister Joanne Somerville traveled to La Posada Providencia in San Benito, Texas. These women

were responding to an invitation from the LCWR (Leadership Conference of Women Religious) for volunteers to help in one of five places along the border. By the end of March more than 160 sisters from various religious congregations responded to this call. “From the moment the invitation came from LCWR through our province communication, I knew in my heart I would volunteer,” says Sister Jacquelyn. “After a short search on the internet about the organizations seeking volunteers and speaking with one of the Toledo Province sisters who ministers in Southwest Texas to migrants, I chose Annunciation House. The need drew me, and God led me.” Between summer and the Christmas holidays of 2018, there was an increase from 500 to 2,000 migrants arriving in El Paso each week. Most came through Mexico from their homes in Guatemala, Honduras or El Salvador. According to reports, violence and poverty are the greatest factors behind the waves of refugees from Central America and Mexico seeking asylum in the United States. Annunciation House serves as the umbrella, non-profit funding agency providing shelters for migrants and asylum seekers. Currently, Annunciation House oversees 13 temporary hospitality houses and directly operates seven of them.
These shelters are available for those crossing the border who are not held in detention centers, providing respite for a day or two before traveling to their sponsors. According to Annunciation House reports, the majority of families arriving at the border have relatives and friends already in the U.S. Once in Immigration custody, new arrivals are processed – fingerprinted, photographed, interviewed, screened through security databases, and officially charged with entering the U.S. illegally. After being processed, families are turned over to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the department that determines if they are to be released, put on parole, or detained. Annunciation House further reports that almost 100 percent of families released by ICE leave El Paso to be reunited with family or friends living in other parts of the U.S. This process typically takes between 24 to 96 hours. The migrants and asylum seekers who stay at one of the shelters overseen by Annunciation House are parents with children. No government funding is accepted by Annunciation House. The shelters where Sisters Maryann, Roseanna, Renée and Jacquelyn were assigned are in industrial sections of El Paso, not far from the Mexican border. Continued on page 12

“My desire was to lovingly engage with our guests and respond to their simple needs,” says Sister Jacquelyn. “Many of these men, women and children are running from violence. They fear for their lives, especially the lives of their young children, and deeply desire a humane way of living. These are families experiencing their own exodus. Leaving one’s home and all one loves and owns is daunting, even if the conditions are unbearable. To welcome and treat each family with the mind and heart of Jesus is an integral dimension of the Gospel.”

Sister Jacquelyn continues, “Contrary to what we hear on the media, the atmosphere is peaceful; meals are filled with animated conversation. The parents are genuinely loving and caring with their children and volunteers. I felt their incredible hope as they stopped for a short time at our shelter. Strife, discontent or disregard for one another are not the prevailing mood. Of course, parents are anxious about the next steps. The city of El Paso is filled with residents open to assisting and supporting migrant families. The kindnesses and service of the hotel staff to guests – especially the little children – is almost textbook perfect.” “The presence of women religious in these shelters is a striking and quiet witness of love as demonstrated by their compassion and wisdom,” Sister Jacquelyn describes. “The generosity of many religious congregations who fund the weeks and months of service by the sisters give voice to the heart of our mission.” Demonstrating God’s Goodness & Provident Care Shelters in El Paso vary in size; however, the protocol in each is similar. When a bus arrives, each person is checked in and their papers reviewed. Before taking families to their assigned bedroom, another volunteer assists in selecting a pair of new socks, underwear and needed hygiene products for each guest. Most families share a room with another family. Meals are enjoyed in a small dining area, although hot meals are rare since there is no kitchen or heating appliances. The next day, bags of food are prepared by volunteers and given to each family to sustain them as they travel to their sponsor’s home. Upon arrival, the long wait begins for an appointment with an immigration judge where a parent pleads their case for asylum which may or may not be granted. 12

Each day, the four Sisters of Notre Dame and other volunteers at the shelters in El Paso were assigned such work as greeting newly arrived guests; showing them to their rooms; preparing or serving meals; organizing activities for children; and many other tasks that made all feel cared for and welcomed.
Sister Roseanna Mellert’s years serving in Nicaragua gave her an added perspective to the challenges faced by these families. “Because I speak Spanish, I did a lot of intake papers, but my favorite activity was teaching those who came for breakfast how to make a waffle using the motel machine – what a marvel to them!” recalls Sister Roseanna with a smile. “And the colorful Fruit Loops cereal always ran out first. Many of the other meals were donated by people residing in the area who wanted to help. Our charism proclaims God’s goodness and provident care. What better way to make it real then by encountering these searching people with the simple trust in God.” “Immigrants and refugees are not the only ones who benefit when people reach out to help them. By giving of my time, talent and energy to aid asylum seekers, I was enriched,” Sister Karen Somerville says about her experience volunteering at the border. “The days brought me great joy, knowing I was helping to build, by my small contribution, a new life for families in need. I learned first-hand about the people and their culture. It was an opportunity to join in solidarity with those who are struggling. In addition, standing together with sisters from many different women’s religious communities enabled all of us to live the Gospel mandate to ‘welcome the stranger’. It was a profound experience.”

Partners in Mission annual donor Mass and luncheon The Sisters of Notre Dame annual donor recognition Mass and luncheon was held on April 28 at the Sisters of Notre Dame Education Center with more than 200 in attendance. Sister Marie Manning, SND, Global Missions Coordinator, recognized the sweeping efforts of more than 80 schools and religious education programs over the past 25+ years who devoted time and resources to educate children about SND global missions and the lives of students their age in foreign lands. Sister Margaret Gorman, SND, Provincial Superior, Chardon Province, recognized Marilyn Rushen and her extended family who experienced the blessing of education in all its forms when several of her grandchildren attended Julie Billiart School. Sister Janelle Stracensky, SND, was surprised with special recognition for her dedication and personalization efforts with the SND Prayer Line for many years, and remains a source of great comfort to prayer line callers.

NEWS REPORT New House of Champions opens A new House of Champions opened this January at 2059 W. 47th in Cleveland that enables 24 children from Metro Catholic School and Urban Community School to attend the after-school program, for children in second through fourth grade. The original House of Champions, which opened in 2012, could only welcome eight children due to its size. They continue to use the original home at 2066 W. 47th as well. The House of Champions provides an after-school, family-like environment, Monday through Friday, with the goal to instill positive habits in the children and support family efforts in promoting education. Children arrive about 2:30 p.m., have a snack, and begin activities indoors and/or outdoors, which instill social skills. The children are picked up by parents or designated relatives at 8 p.m. Volunteers are needed! Here is how you can help: • Bring prepared meals to serve each evening for 8 children and 2 adults • Help with homework and other activities

Sister Sharon Kovalcik, SND, was recently honored with the Spirit of St. Julie Award at the Julie Billart School Celebrate Gala on April 6 at the InterContinental Hotel in Cleveland. This award stands as one of the highest honors bestowed upon a person within the St. Julie Billiart School community. It represents the founding vision and dedicated leadership of the Sisters of Notre Dame, whose abiding faith, outstanding service, selfless leadership and unwavering commitment continue to inspire the alumni, faculty, staff and students at Julie Billiart School. Congratulations, Sister Sharon Kovalcik!
Congratulations to Sr. Carol Marek, SND, accepting for the SND community the Honorary Blue Angel Award at the St. Michael School Angel Gala on March 30, 2019. The Honorary Blue Angel Award recognizes persons who have distinguished themselves through outstanding commitment and service to St. Michael School, using their talents and skills for those in need, consistent with the St. Michael School mission, and serving as a positive role model for students through consistent application of high moral and ethical standards. Sr. Carol was the principal of St. Michael School from 1992 – 2004.
Notre Dame College President to Step Down on June 30, 2019 Notre Dame College President Thomas G. Kruczek has announced that he will step down as the College’s top administrator on June 30, 2019. Since Kruczek’s arrival at the South Euclid campus five years ago, he has directed significant change, including: • Completion and execution of a strategic plan to provide focused priorities for the College through 2022; • Creation of the Falcons’ Nest student center, a place for students to relax, study, enjoy entertainment and get together; • Establishment of the Enterprise Development Center, a dedicated on-campus space created to support the growth of the entrepreneurship program; • Launch of the Caring Hearts fund to help students faced with unexpected dire financial emergencies; • Establishment of the FirstGen Center, an innovative mentoring initiative designed to provide support to undergraduates who are the first in their families to attend college. The College’s Board of Trustees has named John Galovic, Ed.D., as interim president.

A Lasting Tribute (formerly Sister Mary ANTHON) Born Janet Marie KONDRAT on January 4, 1942 Entered into religious life, January 3, 1962 Entered into eternal life, February 21, 2019 Janet was the third of five children born to Henry and Mary (Basel) Kondrat. She attended St. Ann Elementary School, Cleveland Heights, and Regina High School, South Euclid. Janet entered the Sisters of Notre Dame one month after her high school graduation on July 2, 1959. For the next 26 years, Sister served her sisters in community through her dedicated and creative ministry in food service. In 1987 Sister Mary Janet transitioned into a new ministry, that of secretary and office manager. While earning an associate degree in Applied Business, she assisted as secretary at St. Michael School and Metro Catholic Parish School, both in Cleveland. For the past 21 years, she served as office manager at St. Augustine Parish, Cleveland. In addition, Sister learned sign language, played guitar at Sunday Mass, volunteered for any need and helped keep St. Augustine Parish running smoothly. In her free time, she treasured God’s gift of creation while camping, hiking, bird-watching and walking.

SISTER MARY THERESE ANN (formerly Sister Mary Tereseanne)
Born Ruth LYNCH on April 13, 1926 Entered into religious life, August 16, 1948 Entered into eternal life, May 4, 2019
Ruth was the third of four children born to Leo and Mary (Beattie) Lynch. After graduating from St. Aloysius Elementary School, she attended public high school but remained connected to the parish teen club. It was there that a friend introduced her to the Sisters of Notre Dame. Ruth worked at Ohio Bell for three years before entering the convent on February 2, 1946. At investment, she received the name Sister Mary Therese Ann. Sister Mary Therese Ann taught kindergarten and first grade for 10 years. In 1957 she was missioned to California in the Rosa Mystica Province, where she devoted the next 38 years to educational ministries in 15 different schools. Her teaching and tutoring experience included working with children who had learning difficulties and those who came from diverse economic backgrounds. She prepared thousands of second graders to receive the sacraments. In 1995, Sister returned to Chardon, giving in service to her sisters in community. As her eyesight steadily worsened, her dedication to constant prayer continued to be a gift to all.

Retreat 2019 “Unless a grain of wheat shall fall” The group gathered Friday night and spent the weekend in prayer, discussions, and listening to two sisters of Notre Dame who talked about their experiences helping the migrants at the border. The retreat ended with Mass at the sisters’ chapel on Sunday where some of the women caught up with Sr. Mary Frances Murray – their former principal.
