A Letter from the Provincial Superior
Dear Friends, Summer is here, with its blue skies, warm temperatures, and prolonged daylight. There are “milestone events” to celebrate: graduations, weddings, and anniversaries, and special events like family reunions, patriotic holidays, and long-awaited vacations. I invite you to extend the joy of these extraordinary occasions by taking time to savor ordinary moments, too: the taste of a ripe melon or juicy peach from a market stand; the laughter of children playing in the waves or running along a sandy beach; the coolness of evening as you sit outside and watch the stars. Celebration often leads to appreciation, and we have been doing both here at Notre Dame. This spring, the Sisters of Notre Dame celebrated more than 96 faithful friends who have generously contributed to our sisters every year – for some, that means for the past 50+ years, not skipping a beat! What a testament to their unwavering dedication, steadfastness, and love for the sisters. Thank you again for your touching loyalty and friendship. In this issue of Network, we have shared several photos at this annual, joyous event. We are also highlighting some ministries that help us celebrate and appreciate God’s goodness in the ordinary moments of every day: prayer ministry, music ministry, and archival ministry. Since the SND Prayer Line ministry began in 2006, we have received more than 55,630 calls for prayer. In 2017 alone, we averaged 420 calls per month. Please call us when you, a family member or friend need prayer. The Sisters of Notre Dame love to be able to reciprocate your friendship by joining you in prayer. Many Sisters of Notre Dame minister through music. Our sisters participate in liturgical and pastoral music programming, music education, and music therapy. In this issue you will also meet our archivist, Sister Mary Elizabeth Wood, who enjoys making historical discoveries about the ordinary events of the past through her research. Finally, our 2018 Jubilarians are profiled in this issue. You will read about their life journeys of service, friendship and love, and perhaps recognize a teacher or friend. Celebration of jubilee is always a highlight of our summer. May this summer bring many blessings to all of us as the days unfold! Gratefully,

For many people of faith, music evokes the presence and power of God. Whether you are an adult singing in your church choir, a teenager playing guitar as part of a youth worship team, or a senior citizen listening contemplatively during Mass, all can experience the transformative power of music. Sister Karita Ivancic, SND, Director of Liturgy and Pastoral Music for the Sisters of Notre Dame, perhaps explains the power of music best: “Music can center our thinking; music elevates our minds, our hearts, our whole body. Music is a physical, emotional and spiritual act rolled into one!”
from 1990 to 1995, when she taught music at Elyria Catholic. Sister Karita also serves as a part-time professor of theology at Notre Dame College. She earned a BA in Music and German from Notre Dame College and an MME (Master in Music Education), with a concentration in vocal choir, from Indiana University, in Bloomington, Indiana; and a Doctor of Ministry from St. Mary's Seminary/ Graduate School of Theology in Wickliffe, Ohio.
Undoubtedly, the active singing of God’s people enables them to share in the mission of Christ to serve and witness. No one understands this truth better than those individuals called by God to serve in music ministry.

“Music has had a strong influence on my own spiritual life,” Sister Karita explains. “Music has allowed me to grapple with scriptures in a fresh way. Many things I set to music are from scripture. The interface of the scriptural text and musical form opens up avenues of thought and prayer.” As a music minister, Sister Karita incorporates music in the weekly and daily liturgies at the SND

Education Center and for rituals and ceremonies, such as SND Jubilee celebrations. “Music is a way to use my creative impulse to serve the community.” She also believes music can act as a healing balm. “Music brings comfort, joy, and strength to our sick and infirm sisters, especially those in our Health Care Center,” Sister Karita states. Northeast Ohio Catholic high schools. Her passion for music, coupled with her varied music ministry experiences, led her from the classroom into the world of church music ministry where she excelled in sacred liturgical music and ritual.

“Music is a means of expression and communication, for it is ‘the universal language’ that cuts across all borders, cultures, nationalities, ages, and races,” describes Sister Susan Clark, SND. “Music allows one to lift mind and heart to a level much higher and larger than oneself, reaching towards the power and beauty of God. It is a way to enter the spiritual dimension.” Sister Susan earned a Master of Music in Performance at Bowling Green State University. After graduation, she began providing piano lessons to high school students. She also taught vocal lessons and choral groups, show choirs, and marching band for many years at various

“I work with students of all ages and faiths. While we do not necessarily relate to God in the same way, music offers us a commonality of language. It is an expression of the spirit,” she enthusiastically describes. “I encourage my students to embrace, love and make music a permanent part of their lives. It can be a form of prayer because it lifts one’s heart and mind. And it is never too late to engage in music. People need a source of self-expression, of joy, and music lifts one in that direction.”

This year, Sister Susan opened a second piano studio site in Chardon at Notre Dame Education Center, adjacent to Notre Dame Elementary School (NDES). She currently teaches 12 students in Chardon, and 17 students in her Brecksville location. Sharing her gift of music with today’s youth is simply a joy for Sister Ellen Beebe, SND, who serves as a fulltime music teacher at St. Benedict Catholic School, in Garfield Heights. There, she teaches pre-school through 8th grade, and with every grade comes a personal blessing.
can sing! Not everyone should be right by the microphone, perhaps, but everyone can be involved. Age doesn’t matter. The more you ‘do’ music, the better you get.” “Music is one of the best ways I know of to witness the goodness and provident care of God,” she states. “Music, and teaching in general, allow me to touch the hearts of hundreds of students each year. I love teaching in Catholic schools, where I can teach songs for prayer and songs about Jesus any time.”
“I am quite sure there will be music in heaven. I see in the smallest children that some are born with the gift to appreciate and produce music at a deeper level. It’s part of who they are. “I love teaching children of all ages,” she says enthusiastically. “I have to jump from ‘Head Shoulders Knees and Toes’ in one time slot to music composition on MacBooks using GarageBand in the next time slot. It never gets boring. The biggest challenge is remembering 400 names and not confusing them with the thousands of other children I’ve taught in other times and places.” “Children of all ages love music class,” she explains. “For some, it’s the highlight of their day. They can be creative, learn how to quiet and calm themselves through music, learn about instruments, and so much more. Music connects to all the other subjects, too – history, math, art, science, everything!” The passionate music teacher notes, “Music is essential in my life. I NEED it. I love playing music, singing it, sharing it, listening to it. I often use music for prayer and simply rest in it.” “Music is a calling,” she insists. “It’s a gift for every single person on earth.” While she insists everyone, at every age, can use music for praise, Sister Ellen adds with a hint of a smile, “I often say that EVERYONE Sisters of Notre Dame

Sister Karita adds, “Music is a calling. Whenever God gives us any talent, it is a calling and should be used for others. Any gift we are given is something we need to account for. I help people to pray in a way that will draw them to God, not myself. My talent is modest. I want to help and inspire people to praise God.”

Prayer for a sick child, a family member battling cancer, personal financial concerns, relationship difficulties, the death of a loved-one, a job change, a wedding or safe travel: whether prayer requests are happy, sad, terrifying, or exciting, the Sisters of Notre Dame are always available to join you in prayer. The power of prayer is available to everyone, and the sisters consider Prayer Line ministry one of the most critical and needed ministries in the world today. Young and old, of all nationalities and faiths, and even those struggling in their personal faith journey are encouraged to call the SND Prayer Line at (440) 279-1163, day or night, 365 days a year. A sister is there to personally answer calls from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Calls received at other times go to voice mail, and are recorded later that day, in a Book of Intentions. Some people prefer to access the SND Prayer Line via the internet by visiting the SND website at sndchardon.org/ prayer-requests. You can be sure all prayer requests are recorded and prayed for by the sisters in the Provincial Center. The Sisters of Notre Dame Prayer Line began on January 1, 2006. Sister Virginia Reesing, SND, originally proposed the Prayer Line Ministry to the sisters residing in the assisted-living area of the Health Care Center as an opportunity for retired sisters to engage in an active in-house ministry. At the Provincial Center, Sister Mary Roman Ress set up the organizational details and created the forms still used for recording requests. “Many sisters in assisted-living miss working directly with the public,” explains Sister Virginia. “They miss the social interaction they once enjoyed in active ministry. Our Prayer Line gives them an opportunity to still engage with the outside community. It is a win-win for people in need of prayer and for the sisters.” Since the SND Prayer Line’s beginning, more than 55,630 requests for prayer have been received. In 2017 alone, 5,042 calls were received, or an average of 420 calls per month. Each year this number continues to grow as more and more people learn about the existence of the Prayer Line. Sister Mary Sujita, former superior general for the SND congregation, wrote the following words of encouragement to the SND Chardon Province Prayer Line sisters: “Thank you for your generous and loving hearts and for your prayerful spirit. May you be a great blessing to many. May the Prayer Line become a Lifeline for all those searching for God, for healing, for peace, and for meaning and joy in their life. God bless each one of you, my dear sisters.”

“Some feel called to this ministry,” Sister Catherine Romancik, SND, states softly. The 89-year-old Sister of Notre Dame sits at the desk provided in the specially dedicated “Prayer Line Room,” located near the SND Health Care Center. Some of her time this chilly February afternoon may be spent in prayer, as all the sisters who staff the Prayer Line are encouraged to spend some time on duty praying for the requests people have made. On one wall of this modestly decorated room hangs a very large, wooden rosary, hand-carved from a single piece of wood by Herbert Strahler, the brother of Sisters Mary Doreen and Merita Strahler. Sister Catherine is one of nine sisters currently involved in the SND Prayer Line Ministry. While many sisters have come, gone and even returned to this ministry through the years, those currently serving are: Sister Joan Marie Buda Sister Marian Coughlin Sister Mary Theresa Gebura Sister Mary Therese Hennessey Sister Mary Nanette Herman Sister Mary Catherine Romancik Sister Mary Doreen Strahler Sister Mary Janelle Stracensky Sister Rose Ann Webb
“When you yourself are really sick, you may have trouble praying,” she describes. “It’s amazing that many people who call the Prayer Line are appreciative and thank us so wholeheartedly. We receive calls from all over the United States – usually from people with some connection to the Sisters of Notre Dame. The Prayer Line is publicized in newsletters and parish bulletins. “Personally, I am most touched by prayer requests from mothers with a baby who is critically ill or may be undergoing a serious surgery to correct a birth problem. I know it’s breaking that mother’s heart,” Sister Catherine reflects sadly. She continues, “Most of the calls we receive on the Prayer Line are from women, perhaps because women are the caretakers within a family and more active in communicating with family and neighbors. They tend to talk more about personal issues than men. Often, prayer requests are for friends, family members or themselves as they personally battle cancer, or heart disease, or an upcoming surgery. Suddenly, the Prayer Line phone rings. As Sister Catherine smiles at me and excuses herself, she answers, “Good afternoon. Thank you for calling the Notre Dame Prayer Line. How can we help you…”
“I‘m retired, and I don’t have a lot of energy, but I can handle a phone,” describes Sister Catherine playfully. “My training as a hospital chaplain, and 14 years of experience in listening and working with people in crisis situations were good preparation for this kind of ministry.” “Our Prayer Line sisters express humility at being entrusted with people’s heartfelt concerns. All the sisters in the community pray for these requests that are methodically posted and updated daily,” Sister Virginia explains enthusiastically. “We often specifically pray together for the intentions requested; for example, in the daily Mass petitions and in the intercessions of our evening prayer,” adds Sister Catherine. “It is not just an individual ministry, but a ministry of the whole community.” Sister Catherine explains that sometimes praying can be physically and spiritually demanding.

SND Archivist sees congregation’s records as historical treasures
For more than 22 years, Sister Mary Elizabeth Wood, SND, has organized and maintained the archives of the Sisters of Notre Dame, Chardon Province. These archives contain thousands of books, annals, publications, and documents as well as hundreds of thousands of photographs, audiotapes and videotapes of concerts, ceremonies, funerals, educational and religious presentations and more. Sister Elizabeth’s attention to detail, logical thinking, and understanding of conservation techniques to extend the life of various media remains critical for maintaining the archives, located in the SND Education Center in Chardon. “I love my job as archivist,” exclaims Sister Elizabeth with a smile, as she walks within the rows of boxes, book cases and file cabinets. “The best part of this job is helping people find information that connects them to the Sisters of Notre Dame. I am happy to provide access for other researchers.” According to Wikipedia, an archivist is an information professional who assesses, collects, organizes, preserves, maintains control of, and provides access to records and archives determined to have long-term value. The records maintained by an archivist can consist of a variety of forms, including letters, diaries, logs, various other writings, official documents, sound, and photographic records.

Sister Elizabeth’s education and work experience make her an ideal archivist for the province. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Education from St. John College, in Cleveland, and a master’s degree in Religious Studies from Notre Dame Institute, in Middleburg, VA. She taught junior high school for 25 years at schools in northeast Ohio and in Florida. “I taught whatever classes they needed me to teach,” she recalls with a smile.

Sister Elizabeth became the Chardon province archivist in 1996. To prepare for this ministry, Sister Elizabeth worked under Sister Mary Own Kleinhenz, the previous archivist, for one year and participated in various archiving workshops in Ohio, England and Rome. She also became a member of the Archivists for Congregations of Women Religious in the United States. “Anything I decide to include in the SND archives must relate in some way to our congregation. I maintain information on every sister’s life and ministry in our province, including birth and death records. The Chardon province archives also serves as a backup for the general archive in Rome,” Sister Elizabeth describes of today’s operation.

The occupation of an archivist is quite distinct from that of a librarian. The two occupations require separate course training and adhere to separate and distinct principles. “A librarian is more concerned with maintaining current material,” Sister Elizabeth describes. “An archivist is concerned with preservation of information. Some may argue that our work has more in common with a museum curator.” The SND archive is housed in controlled air rooms and uses acid-free paper, folders and boxes to help preserve the holdings. Technological advances are aiding in preservation as well. Sister Elizabeth says, “We are digitally scanning existing print photographs and converting audiotapes onto CDs and videotapes onto DVDs for better preservation and access.” While admittedly time consuming, this technology requires much less storage space and is more readily available. In arranging records, archivists typically apply two important principles: provenance and original order. Provenance refers to the origin of records – essentially who created them, such as government, the Church, personal collections, etc. Original order applies to keeping records in the order established and maintained by the creator.

By way of explaining written histories, Sister Elizabeth takes a copy of the provincial house annals, written in 1911, that offers a first-hand description of the SND congregation’s arrival in America on July 4, 1874. This description was originally hand-written in German and translated into English during the winter of 1948-1949 by Sister Mary Firmata Waechter. This document begins: “July 4, 1874, was the memorable day on which a little colony of eight Sisters of Notre Dame (Translator’s note: Sisters Mary Aloysia, Armella, Pancratia, Bibiana, Odilia, Marcella, Ignatia, and Vincentia) with their Mother General, Mother Mary Chrysostoma, sailed into New York harbor, and for the first time, set foot on American soil. Sister Mary Ignatia reports the following: “With what feelings of gratitude towards God, with what fond hopes, and at the same time, with what intense anxiety, we stepped ashore on this land still shrouded in darkness, this expansive field of our future labors, we cannot describe. All eyes were turned towards us, for surely, never before had the people in the harbor seen religious in such attire – large bonnets, gigantic shoes and short dresses as we eight wore. As we were rather small in stature, our new, heavy habits and still heavier mantles stood out on all sides and we looked more like emigrants from Siberia than from any other country…” www.sndchardon.org
Sister Elizabeth says an archivist’s work encompasses a range of ethical decisions that often fall into three, broad areas: legal documents, professional standards, and accountability in selecting and preserving materials that serve as a primary source of knowledge and influence collective memory and identity. “Much of my time involves answering inquiries I receive from other sisters, sisters’ families, schools, and alumni. If one of our Catholic schools is having an anniversary, the school administrators let me know, and I provide them with content on the school’s history. " After the Women and Spirit exhibit toured the United States (2009-2012), there was increased interest in preserving the history of Catholic sisters and making it available to researchers. The University of Notre Dame houses archives pertaining to the Catholic Church in the United States, including the archives of some religious communities. Several women's religious communities are in serious conversation about a collaborative archives project that would also include a Heritage Center. The Center would invite the public into the history of apostolic women religious in the United States and highlight the contributions of sisters to the development of the Church and society.

Partners in Mission Luncheon recognizes loyal donors More than 190 friends, family members, and generous supporters joined with sisters for Mass and a lovely luncheon at the Notre Dame Education Center on April 22nd.
This year’s celebration honored our most
loyal, consistent donors who have made the Sisters of Notre Dame a recipient of their
yearly philanthropic gifts. In total, 96 donors have been making financial gifts to the
Sisters of Notre Dame for the past 25 years OR MORE! In fact, several individuals have been making a yearly donation for as many as 48 years. Gifts from these steadfast
individuals total more than $818,000 and reflect more than 15,000 individual gifts.

In addition, the Brewster family was
recognized for their gifts of time and talent, and their yearlong efforts to produce
high-quality craft items. This family affair includes all four sisters (one is an SND)
and husbands, working throughout the
year to produce many of the sewn craft
and woodworking items sold in the SND
Gallery Gift Shop, and in the Boutique at the yearly Barbecue and Boutique event. This “volunteer activity” brings the family to-
gether for several long holiday weekends of sewing and numerous outings for new craft ideas to add to the Gallery inventory.
These individuals were recognized at the luncheon for making financial gifts to the Sisters of Notre Dame every year for the past 25 years or more.

Sisters of Notre Dame First Profession of Vows
Sister Nicole Marie Varnerin, SND, celebrated her first profession of vows as a Sister of Notre Dame on February 24 at Notre Dame Education Center, Chardon. Sister Nicole is the daughter of Bruce and Debbie Varnerin of Ridgefield, Connecticut. As an electrical engineer, Sister Nicole did research with stroke and spinal cord injury patients at the Cleveland Clinic. While in the National Novitiate in Covington, Kentucky, she took courses in theology at Xavier University, volunteered for the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition, worked in the Health Care Center at the Covington Provincial Center, and tutored in math and science for Notre Dame Urban Education Center in Covington, Kentucky.

Sister Nicole enters the community from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Ridgefield, Connecticut. She is currently serving in Mathematics Intervention and Admissions at Central Catholic High School.

A Lasting Tribute SISTER MARY ANNE (formerly Sister Mary Emeric) Born Mary Anne BLASKO on February 3, 1933 Entered into religious life, August 16, 1957 Entered into eternal life, December 14, 2017 The daughter of Emery and Mary Anna (Mudri), Mary Anne was the second of six children. She is the natural sister of Sister Mary Veronica, formerly Sister Mary Thaddea. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame on February 2, 1955, the same day as her younger sister. She earned a nursing degree in 1954, receiving certification as a registered nurse in 1955. As a registered nurse, she ministered to her sisters in community, first at the Provincial House on Ansel Road in Cleveland, and then in Chardon. For 60 years, she responded to the needs of others with care, compassion, a welcoming spirit, and an empathetic heart. During her semi-retirement, Sister Mary Anne served as health consultant for the sisters living at the Provincial Center. She assisted with the Prayer Line and was dedicated to her ministry of Prayer, Presence and Praise. She also loved music and was a member of the convent choir and the Good Tidings Choir.
SISTER MARY PATRICIA (formerly Sister Mary Milan) Born Patricia Ann VOVK on April 6, 1945 Entered into religious life, August 16, 1965 Entered into eternal life, February 5, 2018 The daughter of Frank and Joanne (nee Hiti) Vovk, both born in Yugoslavia, Patricia joined her sister, Sister Mary Jane (formerly Sister Mary Patriciarose) as an aspirant with the Sisters of Notre Dame. She entered the community on February 2, 1963, and at investment received the name Sister Mary Milan. Later, she returned to her baptismal name. Sister Mary Patricia received a bachelor’s degree from St. John College in Cleveland; a master’s degree from Cleveland State University; and a second master’s degree, in religious education, from Notre Dame Institute, Middleburg, Virginia. For almost 50 years -- whether as teacher, principal or tutor – Sister Mary Patricia had a passion for Catholic education. She taught elementary and middle school grades at St. Francis of Assisi, St. Thomas, and Cleveland Metro Catholic, and was principal at St. Thomas, St. Peter, and Holy Trinity schools. She was the consummate educator who loved children and nurtured every aspect of their development. She viewed education as a total effort from parents, teachers and students. She was a woman of conviction and gentleness, wisdom and humor, prayer and a welcoming spirit – all wrapped in a loving smile!

SISTER MADELINE MARY (formerly Sister Mary Electa) Born Madeline Nancy COLUMBRO on March 16, 1934 Entered into religious life, August 16, 1954 Entered into eternal life, April 13, 2018 The daughter of Nicola and Nancy (DeNicola) Columbro, Madeline entered the Sisters of Notre Dame on September 8, 1951. At investment, she received the name Sister Mary Electa, and later returned to her baptismal name, Sister Madeline Mary. Sister earned a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame College, South Euclid, and began her ministry in education, teaching high school for nine years before returning to the college for the next 25 years as Director of the Lifelong Learning Center and then Academic Dean. During this time, Sister Madeline Mary also earned a master’s degree in Musicology from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, and a doctorate degree in Musicology from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland. From 1988-1991, Sister Madeline ministered at the Notre Dame Generalate in Rome doing research for a congregational brochure and teaching music and liturgy at the North American College. Back in the United States, she served as Director of Spiritual Development at Bergamo Center in Dayton. She volunteered on the Executive Board of the United Way and Board of Managers for the Rainey Institute, both in Cleveland. For the next 10 years, Sister worked in the Notre Dame Advancement Office and was responsible for music and liturgy in the provincial center. She continued in music ministry and working in the SND Archives until 2016.
SISTER MARY ST. MARK Born Ruth Lucile FLORENCE on February 20, 1927 Entered into religious life, August 16, 1948 Entered into eternal life, May 5, 2018 Born to Edward Vance and Lucile (Lamb) Florence, Ruth was fascinated by airplanes as a child. As an adult, she delighted in the opportunity to take lessons and learn to fly a plane. Her simple faith and trust were nurtured by the strong faith of her parents and their devotion to the Blessed Mother. After graduating from Villa Maria High School in Pennsylvania, Ruth worked as a receptionist at St. Thomas Hospital in Akron. She reveled in meeting and assisting visitors, and her friendly, energetic spirit pointed clearly to her future life and ministry. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame community on September 16, 1945 from St. Joseph Parish in Cuyahoga Falls. She began her 15-year ministry as a primary teacher after two years of study at St. John College, Cleveland. In 1962, Sister was assigned to the new Provincial Center in Chardon where she became the receptionist and switchboard operator. Here, she almost functioned as the heart of the community, being the first to welcome visitors. In 1986, Sister Mary St. Mark moved to Arlington, VA, where she ministered to the elderly at St. Ann Parish, and as a pastoral assistant at Arlington Hospital, visiting patients. In 1995, Sister returned to the Provincial Center and served as a part-time receptionist and activities specialist in the SND Health Care Center. Sisters of Notre Dame
