MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dr. Michael Bates, President, Notre Dame Schools Dear Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Families, Alumni and Friends, At a meeting to welcome our new students and parents this past August 2017, our beloved principal, Mr. Waler, offered me some helpful advice about winter driving, as well as gifts of a scraper and rock salt. As a Los Angeles native, I appreciated his counsel about good tires and driving slowly on icy roads. On that warm summer evening – though many have asked me if I knew about the coming snow – I could not have imagined these past months. In my first winter in the snow belt of Chardon, Ohio, my family and I have marveled at the serene and quiet beauty of snowfall. Our sons have reveled in play with snowballs in the driveway. On the occasion of snow days, it has been magical to share with them the news of the unexpected blessing of free time, to which they whisper with their endearing smiles, “really!?” NDCL Principal, Mr. Waler, offering helpful winter advice to California native and Notre Dame Schools’ President, Dr. Bates
In a community where people feel loved, where they are able to live most fully, and to learn most readily, we are able to glimpse the transformative grace of God.
Our Notre Dame Schools campus has been transformed to a scene out of Disney’s Frozen, with life abundant in the halls, in our classrooms, and plenty of ice and snow outside. Though it has been a cold and long winter, I have come to know the many and wonderful things that make our schools so special and such a place for young people to thrive and to know God. Hearts are warm and alive, minds are active and growing, and community gathers in celebration and in care for one another. Over these past months, I have come to know many of our students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni. One of our Notre Dame Academy alums shared with me why she continues to love and value her alma mater: it was on this campus where she witnessed to a community that “made God’s love real.” I think this insight is hugely important; in a community where people feel loved, where they are able to live most fully, and to learn most readily, we are able to glimpse the transformative grace of God. As I write, it is snowing outside my office window. As we enter into spring and the snow thaws, I recognize the inward journey each of us takes through the seasons. In this moment of Lenten journey to Easter, we anticipate and we ready ourselves to continue to proclaim the Gospel message of love of God, neighbor, and oneself. We strive for excellence in all that we do. May this issue of Seasons inspire you, and may you continue to know the blessings of our Good and Provident God.

elly (Kane `93) Keefe made history on January 1, 2018 when she became president of ERC, a Highland Heights-based company that provides HR resources, training and consulting services for organizations and businesses across the globe.

Keefe became the first woman to lead ERC in the Northeast Ohio company’s 97-year history. She succeeded Pat Perry, who served as president for nearly 20 years. Perry will continue supporting the leadership team as chairman. In a prepared statement, Perry said “[Keefe] has proven to be an outstanding leader and is prepared to continue ERC’s tradition of providing exceptional services to our clientele.” Keefe is no stranger to the human resource “ I want to make a company. who suggested we job share at her company. After discussing this with my husband Matt, who has been entirely supportive of me in my career, I let ERC know that I could work 12 hours a week. They said fine. That was three children and 13 years ago. Every year, ERC President Pat Perry would tap me on the shoulder and ask if I was able to do one more project or take on one more responsibility. The timing was always right, and I was able to grow into my current position.” “Working at ERC has always been more than a career,” the bright, dynamic business woman insists. “I want to make a difference in the world. My goal has always been to do the absolute best I could every day.” Like Keefe, ERC’s corporate culture is one that continually encourages employees to be smarter and make their lives and the lives of their clients better. “At ERC, you have to love what you are doing and believe in what you are doing,” Keefe describes enthusiastically. “When you have these corporate and personal values in place, it is not just a job, but a passion to come to work each day.” Positive messaging lines the hallways within ERC’s stunning corporate headquarters: “Employees’ families always come first. We believe in attracting and retaining only top performers. We believe in imagination. We believe that everyone is of equal importance at our workplace. We believe that a healthy workplace is a successful workplace. We believe in paying interns, laughing at work, taking risks…”
Upon reflection, Keefe says the mission and values she embraced during her four years at Notre DameCathedral Latin prepared her for her career at ERC as well as her generous work within the community. “When I first visited NDCL, it struck me as a school I could be proud of attending,” she recalls. “As a student, I became very involved at school. I was a cheerleader, pitcher on the NDCL softball team, in drama, and served as vice president of student council. The teachers went out of their way to encourage me to try new things; they challenge students in a way that helps students to grow. Some teachers stood out as being very committed to their faith which, in turn, challenged me to see the importance of faith and to stay committed. “My parents were huge Catholic school proponents,” she continues. “When you are younger, you don’t always see or appreciate the value of a Catholic education, but the values it teaches helps to round out a person. Catholic education encourages young people to think differently about the world and how they have an impact on it.” Years after graduation, the former Lion went on a site visit to NDCL. She describes, “Sister Jacquelyn Gusdane (former Notre Dame Schools President) has an amazing way of asking you to be a part of something bigger than yourself. After our initial

meeting, I agreed to help get the NDCL Alumni Association off the ground and then served on NDCL’s capital campaign. Later, I was asked to serve on the NDCL Board of Directors. I was the first official NDCL graduate to be asked and was honored to represent this group.” Additionally, a few years ago Keefe graciously delivered the keynote address at NDCL’s Career Week. “I’ve been involved my entire life,” she exclaims. “My parents are a beautiful example of what philanthropy is all about. However, NDCL gave me the platform and structured opportunities to give back.” “Service is a very important personal value. It truly is more joyful to give of my time than to not. If someone wants to meet, I try to do so. I’ve had some great people in my life who have contributed to my success. I desire to do the same. I am always looking at ways to make things better — to know that when I leave a board, organization or workplace, I will have made something better than when I found it.” She certainly accomplished this goal when she agreed to be the first Lion to serve on the Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Board of Directors. Keven Krajnak `98, Notre Dame Schools Director of Development, says, “Kelly exemplifies the heart of a true NDCL alumnus: service to a cause, generous and insightful. Her dedication to advancing NDCL

that the plans they are putting into place today will allow our children’s’ children to experience the exceptional education of the Sisters of Notre Dame.”
While faith remains first in her life, family comes a close second. She and Matt have been married 17 years, and they have three children: Connor, Katie and Elizabeth. Like her parents, they are committed to providing their children with a Catholic education.
Keefe comments on the current debate occurring nationwide concerning the advancement of women in the workplace. “I believe, female or male, the most qualified candidate is the best person for the job,” she states. “Discrimination should not be tolerated—ever, in or out of the workplace. I would say to any woman that if you feel you do not have opportunity for advancement, go somewhere where you see a future. There are many opportunities and many organizations that will embrace you for who you are. Put your best foot forward. Be honest and kind and be true to who you are.”

Photography Students Receive Local and State Awards
N
otre Dame-Cathedral Latin’s photography students are winning local and statewide competitions this year, as well as in years past, with much credit going to the extensive photography curriculum and Mr. George (Dan) Yaniga, NDCL’s photography instructor for the past four years. Yaniga earned a BA in K-12 Art Education from the University of Akron. He teaches Introduction to Photography, Photography I, Photography II, and next year the school will offer seniors Photography III. “I have had approximately 115 students enrolled in photography classes at NDCL this year alone, spread across semester-long Introduction to Photography class and yearlong advanced photo courses,” Yaniga says. “Our students usually participate in three main art competitions: Cleveland Clinic’s eXpressions in the fall; Lakeland College’s art competition in the winter; and the Ohio Youth Governor’s Show in the spring. We have been blessed to have photo winners in all three of these competitions.”

Specifically, 22 NDCL photographs were awarded and juried in the Lakeland College art show out of 25 photo submissions. Quite impressive! Additionally, seven student photographs made it to the state level of judging in the Ohio Youth Governor’s competition. Three of these photos won awards, representing the top 275 works of art among 10,000 submissions throughout Ohio. These award-winning photographs will be showcased in the Columbus art show this April. “I am not surprised by how well NDCL students performed in these competitions,” qualifies Yaniga. “I am aware of the potential talent among our students. I am extremely proud of the success they have brought to our department.” “My goal here at NDCL is to share a passion for the arts that I possess and the knowledge I have acquired from working

in the professional sector,” Yaniga states. “I want my students to create something amazing, really enjoy the process, be very proud of the work they do, and have a thirst to accomplish more.” Yaniga says many of his photography students have shown personal initiative to find internships and photography work outside of class. “My students have a passion to do this work outside of the class which may be part of why they are doing so well in competition,” he suggests. NDCL’s Introduction to Photography course instructs students on traditional film and darkroom as well as digital photography. Photo I introduces students to 35mm film and how to make darkroom prints as well as some digital techniques. Photo III again teaches digital and traditional photography. “At this point, this is the third photography class for

students, many of whom have developed a niche for what they enjoy and are interested in concentrating on a style,” explains Yaniga. “I encourage these students to try more advanced techniques as well as try new things.” “I was ecstatic to learn that seven photographs reached the State competition in Ohio,” Yaniga says. “Then to learn that three photos won was incredible!” Senior Christian Baker `18 submitted several photographs this year in the Lake and Geauga County Student Art competition. His photo Alley Backed received a Blue Ribbon; Lifestyle received a Gold Seal; and Drowning Light won Honorable Mention. The scoring scale was as
follows: first place Blue Ribbon, second place Gold Seal, and third place Honorable Mention. “This year, two of my photographs also made it into the Governor’s competition, Home Sweet Home and Learn from the Past,” the NDCL senior proudly adds. Christian says, “I really love my photography classes. Mr. Y and I have developed a positive relationship over the past two years. He is always willing to stay late and help me edit my photos.”

In addition to taking photography classes at NDCL, the inspired young photographer took Design I and Design II with Mr. Yaniga as well as a semester-long Creative Computer Art class at NDCL. During the summer, he enrolled in a competitive, two-week graphic design class at the Cleveland Institute of Art as well as a course at Manhattan College in New York City that mixed graphic design and photography. He plans to major in Visual Communication Design at Ohio State University in the fall.

So far, the NDCL junior has taken Introduction to Photography, Photo I and is currently in Photo II. She says, “I am very happy with the photography classes offered at NDCL. Mr. Y is an amazing teacher. He gives us a

“I enjoy the emotion and connection you get taking photographs of people,” she describes. “Having my photographs win in competition validates my passion. I plan on majoring in nursing at college and hope to use my photography skills when I attend mission trips with Nurses Without Borders.”
After taking Photography I and Photography II, Tommy admits he is hooked. “It felt really good to win a Gold Seal for my photograph titled, White Granite Sky, at the Lakeland competition. We put a lot of work in, and if feels great to receive recognition from others besides classmates and teachers,” Tommy explains.

“Having our photography courses within the Fine Arts building is a completely different experience on campus. It doesn’t even feel like we are in school,” Tommy adds. “Though I do not plan to pursue photography as a career, I plan to continue it as a hobby outside of work.” Tommy will be majoring in political science at The Ohio State University in the fall, and he has enlisted in the NROTC (Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps) at OSU. NDCL senior Giovanna “Gigi” Vitale `18 also experienced success at the Lakeland competition, earning a Blue Ribbon for her photograph titled, Neon Reflection. The photograph also received recognition at the Governor’s competition. “I have had a lot of fun in my photography classes at NDCL,” Gigi says. “I was interested in learning photography, and talking with students from other high schools, I realized how many more photography classes are

offered at NDCL. I’ve always been creative and artistic and have taken several ceramic classes in the Fine Arts building as well. This building is nice, relaxing, and you experience a whole different vibe here.”

Gigi enjoys working in traditional photography – shooting with film, mixing chemicals, and processing prints in the NDCL darkroom. She prefers portrait photography. “There is something beautiful you can capture in people,” she says. “I am a big fan of eyes.” Gigi plans on majoring in chemical engineering at The Ohio State University this fall.

Budding Entrepreneurs Recognized in Northeast Ohio Innovates Competition With the help of entrepreneurs from Northeast Ohio Innovates, an organization that encourages students to become future innovators and entrepreneurs, students in Business Department Chairperson Mrs. Nancy Vondrak’s classes recently developed comprehensive business plans for all sorts of creative products and services. The plans were judged by four local entrepreneurs and winners received their awards from Mr. Ryan White, President and CEO of INSIGHT2PROFIT, following his keynote presentation to kick-off Career Week.

Martina Katic `18 MoodSwing, a music app that senses your emotions and creates a personal playlist based on the mood that you are feeling. SECOND PLACE:

Spring Musical Brings Charlie Brown and the Peanuts Gang to Life Charles Schulz’s beloved Peanuts comic strip came to life on the Sam J. Frankino Stage in the Pat and Janet O’Brien Center for the Performing Arts as NDCL presented YOU’RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN in four shows in early March. The production featured Daniel Fogarty `20 in the title role, Elena Dahlhausen `18 as Lucy, Caitlin Spicer `20 as Sally, Zachary Smith `18 as Snoopy, Thaddeus Brennan `19 as Schroeder and Carter Callender `19 as Linus.
Artists Win 21 Top Awards in Regional Art Competition NDCL’s school colors of blue and gold proved to be the winning palette for our student artists, who won seven gold seal and 14 blue ribbon awards in the Annual Lake and Geauga Juried Student Art Awards Show in early February. Of the 72 works submitted by our Art Department, 58 were accepted for the show, which this year attracted 597 works from 20 different schools. In all, our artists won a total of 55 individual awards.

Legal Lions Compete at State Mock Trial Competition NDCL’s Mock Trial Team advanced to the Ohio Mock Trial State Competition for the third consecutive year.
NDCL was one of only 36 of the 347 teams throughout the entire state of Ohio to qualify for this year’s finals.

The return trip to the state capital came after the Lions won both trials in regional competition at the Lake County Courthouse. NDCL’s prosecution beat Mentor High School, and the Lions’ defense won its case against Perry High School. Judges named Antonia Mysyk `18 as the best attorney in both trials and at the State competition.
Nine Students Snag Awards in Prestigious Cleveland Clinic eXpressions Competition For only the second time in NDCL history, students were recognized in all three categories in Cleveland Clinic’s eXpressions competition: art, language, and math. Of the nearly 1,700 entries from schools throughout the Clinic’s entire market area, fewer than 7% earned the judges’ recognition. This year only 76 artworks, 36 writing submissions, and five math projects earned awards. Nine NDCL students are among the winners.

NDCL celebrates The 27th annual Lion’s Mane Event: Vintage 2018 was truly a celebration of the NDCL community!
Over 400 parents, alumni, student volunteers, and friends filled the McGarry Gym for a visit to wine country on Saturday, March 24 in support of NDCL students, many of whom volunteered to make the evening a success. Our guests enjoyed fabulous food, drink and friendship while taking their chances on a myriad of raffle and auction packages and raising their paddle in generous support of NDCL’s Holy Family Fund. Special entertainment included performances by NDCL’s Dance Team and student thespian-singers from our spring musical, YOU’RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN, as well as classic rock-n-roll from The Shizz.

Marching Lions Partner for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade On Saturday, March 17, a group of Cathedral Latin alumni and the NDCL Marching Band marched together in the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. Before the parade, NDCL played the school’s fight song and the Latin alumni sang their fight song in return.

NDCL’s 13th Annual Career Week began with a keynote address by Ryan White, President and CEO of INSIGHT2PROFIT, on Tuesday, February 20. INSIGHT2PROFIT is a consulting firm based in Cleveland that works with companies to improve profitability through pricing strategy, implementation, and technology. Mr. White stressed the importance of preparation and perseverance during his address. Throughout the week, 35 professionals of current parents, alumni, and friends shared their experience in small group discussion with sophomores and juniors.

Alexis Hammer `18 Named North Coast League Player of the Year NDCL standout Alexis “Lexi” Hammer was recently named North Coast League Player of the Year for Girls Basketball and is a candidate for the 2018 Ohio Varsity Girls Basketball Player of the Year. “Lexi has had an outstanding four-year career at NDCL,” said head coach Joe Spicuzza. “She improved and excelled in all facets of the game, which led to a unanimous selection for MVP of the North Coast League.” As a senior guard, Lexi averaged 12.3 points, 7.9 rebounds 4.1 assists and 2.5 steals per game. With a 4.08 GPA, Lexi scores high marks in the classroom as well.
Tori Soria `20 qualifies for state gymnastics tourney After an outstanding performance in the district gymnastics meet, sophomore Tori Soria competed in the vault event at the State gymnastics tournament at Hilliard’s Bradley High School on March 2-3, 2018. Tori finished 18th with an average score of 9.2!

Notre Dame - Cathedral Latin
David Forsythe is practicing and educating folks from all over the world about Korean Natural Farming (KNF). KNF is a complete farming system developed by Master HanKyu Cho that is focused on restoring balance in the soil by partnering with micro-organisms. David had the privilege this past December (2017) to travel to South Korea to study with Master Cho and witness their farming technology first hand. David resides in Papaikou, Hawaii.
