As I look back on our 2018-19 school year, I recognize clearly that the nearly 1300 students

entrusted to our care witness to a community which is responsive with love, energized by faith, and blessed in so many ways.

As you read this Annual Report, please know how grateful I am and all of us are for you and for the dedication of so many. Notre Dame Elementary (NDES) and Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin (NDCL) schools are great, strong, and moving forward because of a dynamic vision, a commitment of shared leadership, and an effort by all to realize this vision.

This past year, we accomplished so much.

We set records for:

• our Giving Day, a 24-hour online event which generated over $159,000 in donations.

• our Mane Event, our largest gathering of 500+ guests, netting over $170,000 on behalf of students in financial need and for improving our schools • most NDCL student internships in summer 2019 at the Cleveland Clinic (11) • highest financial aid total awarded to NDCL students ($1.7M) We improved student life and learning through the addition of furniture in the middle school and high school; adding chilled, filtered drinking fountains; upgrading LED corridor lighting; moving and upgrading the preschool with flooring, paint, lights, and furniture; and reorganizing the elementary school schedule to prioritize a love of learning.

We were recognized for excellence.

• NDCL was named a 2018 National Blue Ribbon School by the US Department of Education • NDCL was named a 2019 Top Workplace in Northeast Ohio by the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

We also benefitted by the leadership of our Pope, whose trip to the United Arab Emirates to lead prayer and to commit to peaceful dialogue is what inspired a remarkable gift to our students.

As our Board of Directors completes our next Strategic Planning process this fall, know that our focus remains clear: to provide a life-changing, transformative Catholic education empowering our students to transform the world with love.

otre Dame-Cathedral Latin School celebrated the achievements of 160 members of its Class of 2019 during the school’s 29th annual commencement ceremony on May 24 at the Mentor Fine Arts Center.

Mr. Paul Wilkes, a 1956 graduate of Cathedral Latin, delivered the commencement address. A journalist and author with degrees from Marquette and Columbia, Wilkes has written extensively about individual spirituality as well as the role of religion in public and personal lives. His work has been published

by The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, and The Atlantic.

In his inspirational remarks punctuated with humorous anecdotes from his own youth, Wilkes quickly glossed over his professional accomplishments to focus on the enduring lesson he learned as a “Latin man.”

“We learned that you were put on this earth to make

the world a better place,” Wilkes recalled. “It was part of the culture of the school, and it stuck with me.”

In 1971 he co-founded Christian Help in Park Slope, which continues to serve food for the poor and provide shelter and support for homeless mothers in Brooklyn, New York. He later founded Homes of Hope India, which since 2006 has raised over $4 million and built fifteen homes for orphaned, abandoned, and neglected girls.

Mr. Wilkes urged our newest alumni to look beyond degrees, promotions, and possessions to ask themselves, “How will I make the world better by my life?” He suggested that they use that simple but powerful question as a short prayer to begin each day.

“And when you pray before going to bed at night, ask yourself: How did I do?”

his fall, on two occasions the Men of Latin renewed their Alumni spirit. On September 22nd, over 50 Latin alumni, family, and friends gathered at Progressive Field to cheer on the Tribe. On October 11th, over 100 Men of Latin gathered for a pre-game dinner, prayer, and to cheer on the Lions against their historic rival, Benedictine. For the game, special throwback Latin jerseys in white, purple, and gold were worn by the team and the student section rallied in purple. Prior to the game, a legacy wall, 45’x5’ in size, was unveiled as a testament to the wonderful heritage of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. The wall boasts over 200 photos of great moments in prayer, academics, athletics, extra-curriculars, and leadership from our schools’ founding moments: Cathedral School for girls and boys founded in 1848, Notre Dame Academy for boys and girls founded in 1878, CathedralLatin School for boys founded in 1916, and Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School for girls and boys founded in 1988. The wall was curated from the archives of our schools by Sr. Joanne Keppler, SND, and designed by former NDCL faculty, Stacy Westervelt. “The legacy wall is entitled Inspire, reminding our current and future students of the great legacies from which their school heralds and their alumni precede them. The wall is to inspire our alumni to know that they have a wonderful place to call home,” shared Dr. Bates. “Go Lions!”

In the spirit of international and interfaith friendship NDCL announces $250,000 gift from UAE

otre Dame Schools President Dr. Michael Bates announced that Notre DameCathedral Latin has received a generous gift of $250,000 from the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Dr. Bates explained that the UAE’s Year of Tolerance focuses on openness to other cultures, an effort that aligns with NDCL’s core values of justice and respect, whereby we cherish and honor the Godgiven dignity of each person.

The gift, which the Embassy extended in a spirit of international and interfaith friendship during the UAE’s Year of Tolerance, will be used to help NDCL modernize its classrooms with contemporary, flexible furniture. The gift will also support programs to foster global connections and understanding.

The UAE has a particularly strong connection to northeastern Ohio, thanks in large part to its relationship with the Cleveland Clinic, which operates a 364-bed multi-specialty hospital in Abu Dhabi. The UAE has supported numerous nonprofit and community endeavors throughout the United States, including construction of a soccer field in Cleveland’s Glenville neighborhood.

“The Embassy was particularly interested in our work after Pope Francis visited the UAE in February, the first time a modern pope has visited a country on the Arabian Peninsula,” Dr. Bates explained.

“Pope Francis and his Sunni Muslim counterpart stressed the importance of tolerance, acceptance of others, and living together peacefully.”

NDCL Opens doors to 730 students,

Notre Dame Elementary is a COOL School!

W

hen NDCL opened the doors for the 2019-2020 school year, 730 students from seven northeastern Ohio counties—our strongest enrollment in eight years—streamed into our corridors and classrooms, eager for another year of faith and learning on our picturesque campus of opportunity in Munson Township.

The biggest piece of our makeover includes the installation of $350,000 in contemporary, comfortable, and flexible furniture in nearly every classroom on our campus. New teacher desks, presentation lecterns, and cabinets—about 800 student table and chairs in total—arrived in September. “We purposely scheduled the arrival of the new student furniture for about a month after school resumed,” said Principal Mr. Joseph A. Waler.

“This timing allowed our students and teachers to start the school year strongly by focusing on teaching and learning, not on moving and rearranging furniture,” he added.

“Plus the first day of school tends to be like Christmas morning,” Mr. Waler explained. “There are

ith careful planning and analysis of the electrical capacity of the building, Notre Dame Elementary School was able to install air conditioning in the Multipurpose Room (MPR) this past spring, and 16 window units in strategically placed rooms throughout the 7 wings of the first two floors. With further study, we were able to order an additional 23 classroom units to be installed.

“It is an extraordinary moment for our elementary school. This summer we moved the preschool into the main building, installed new lockers for the middle school, installed new filtered and chilled drinking fountains throughout the building, and we were finally able to address a challenge that has remained for the elementary school since its move into its current location since 1972: how to cool the building.

This is an interim, cost-effective solution to providing air conditioning in our learning spaces,” said Dr. Michael Bates, President of Notre Dame Schools.

Among the blessings that greeted students on the first day: Enthusiastic, caring, and professionally prepared teachers, including four new faculty members who are NDCL graduates 180 speedy new laptops, bringing the total number of computers for students to more than 600 14 College Credit Plus (CCP) courses, enabling 170 students to take 1,815 semester credit hours—and save their families more than $1 million in college tuition this year alone Eight academic coaches to provide as-needed academic assistance to any student in almost every subject Bright LED lights and new ceiling tiles installed on all second floor corridors, complementing work

previously completed on the first floor New tasty, nutritious, and fun food choices prepared

by AVI, our new food service partner Renovation of two science labs, thanks to a generous donation of equipment facilitated by Mr. Charlie Dottore, father of senior Octavya and sophomore Paolo.

These and other enhancements seek to create a vibrant learning environment that promotes the transformation of our students into the women and men God calls them to be—an environment that was evident everywhere on our campus during our opening days.

“If well begun is half done, then we’re on our way to a really great year,” Mr. Waler said.

Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School wins Plain Dealer’s Top Workplaces 2019 Award

N

otre Dame-Cathedral Latin School has been named a winner of the Top Workplaces 2019 Award by The Plain Dealer. Earning the Top Workplaces 2019 honor is a prestigious distinction— with only 150 companies in the Plain Dealer’s broad distribution region making this year’s list, which will be published in the newspaper’s June 16 edition.

The list is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by Energage, LLC, a leading provider of technologybased employee engagement tools. The anonymous survey measured several aspects of NDCL’s workplace culture, including leadership, communication, morale, and mission effectiveness.

“Top Workplaces is more than just recognition,” said Doug Claffey, CEO of Energage.

“Our research shows organizations that earn the award attract better talent, experience lower turnover, and are better equipped to deliver bottom-line results.

Their leaders prioritize and carefully craft a healthy workplace culture that supports employee engagement.”

“The Top Workplaces 2019 honor is a great culmination to a school year that began with NDCL being the only high school in Ohio to win the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon Award,” commented Principal Joseph A. Waler.

“These awards are really two sides of the same coin,” Waler explained. “Because of the shared commitment and tireless effort of our talented faculty and staff, our students are achieving at levels that have earned NDCL national recognition.

“Becoming a Top Workplace isn’t something organizations can buy,” Claffey said. “It’s an achievement organizations have worked for and a distinction that gives them a competitive advantage. It’s a big deal.”

Dear Friends of Notre Dame Schools, As I reflect upon the past four years since the formation of Notre Dame Schools I am very glad to report that both Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School and Notre Dame Elementary School are financially strong and most importantly continue to provide an excellent contemporary, challenging and faith inspired education to our students. This has been manifested as NDCL joined NDES as a National Blue Ribbon School during the past year.

The NDS Board of Directors, formed in 2015, was a vision of the Sisters of Notre Dame to ensure the sustainability of the SND Educational Vision and Principles. With this vision in mind, the NDS Board and the staff of both schools launched the strategic plan “Better Together” in 2016.

This integrated strategic plan has established mutually beneficial relationships between the schools, shared resources and positive synergies

for programs, students, faculty and staff.

During this current school year the Board of Directors and the staff of the schools will be engaged in the development of a new strategic plan that will build upon the foundation of “Better Together” and serve as a renewed road map for the future of the schools. I am certain that NDS will meet the goals established by the new strategic plan and continue to thrive as a result of the dedication and service of Board members, faculty & staff of both schools and the commitment of our families, alumni and friends to the schools and the mission that we share.

I made the choice to include NDCL in my written estate plan because I find consummate value in a Catholic education that comes at a critical time in the lives of young people.
