What a wonderful first year it has been working with colleagues focused upon excellence.

I am honored to share with you the news that we are nationally recognized for academic excellence.

Just a few weeks ago, Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin was honored as a 2018 United States Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School.

At our recent joint faculty and staff retreat for Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin and Notre Dame Elementary Schools, we witnessed to the joy, the synergy, and the strength of community realized when we are “Better Together.” On the 450 acre campus of the Sisters of Notre Dame, we are blessed to guide, inspire, challenge, and motivate over 1,250 students each day in Catholic preschool through high school in a common vision to “transform the world by consciously doing good and bringing hope to the hearts of all.”

I am honored to share with you the news that we are nationally recognized for academic excellence. In 2014, Notre Dame Elementary School was named a United States Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School. Just a few

weeks ago, Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin was honored as a 2018 United States Department of Education National Blue Ribbon School. Next month, I will travel with our NDCL principal, Mr. Joseph A. Waler, to Washington, DC to receive this award on behalf of our students, faculty, staff, and school.

This past summer, Notre Dame Schools invested over $1.7 million in capital improvements to the campus, including the Wollschleger Weight Training and Wellness Center, a gift from Dale and Lina Wollschleger, NDCL graduates from the Class of 1995. Other improvements include a new floor in McGarry Gymnasium, a new scoreboard in Lion Stadium, renovated boys’ team locker room, and improvements to both schools by the generosity of many.

In this annual report, we wanted to highlight the reality that Notre Dame Schools have been a force for good, for impact by faith and learning for 140 years. When the Sisters of Notre Dame

opened Notre Dame Academy in 1878 for girls and boys grades 1-12, little did they know that their legacy would travel so far and positively affect so many.

Similarly, we are incredibly grateful for the courage and vision the Sisters of Notre Dame and the Cathedral Latin Alumni Association had in forming Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin 30 years ago.

May this 2018 Annual Report help you know how grateful we all are to so many for the blessings bestowed upon our students today and well into a future beyond our vision.

Lion Pride is Nationwide Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin named one of the nation’s best schools

National Blue Ribbon Award announced in Washington, D.C. Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin was named a National Blue Ribbon School during a formal announcement by U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos in Washington, D.C. on Monday, October 1, 2018.

presentations from Secretary DeVos and other esteemed educators, as well as opportunities to share best practices with representatives from other outstanding schools throughout the nation.

Out of more than 130,000 schools in the country, NDCL is among just 300 public and 49 private schools to win the coveted Blue Ribbon Award in 2018. And, NDCL is the only high school (public and private) in the entire state of Ohio to win this year!

Since its inception in 1982, the Blue Ribbon Award has become a trademark of excellence and symbol of quality recognized throughout the United States.

NDCL was nominated for the Blue Ribbon Award by the Council for American Private Education (CAPE). Each year CAPE nominates only 50 schools in the entire country for the award.

Not all Blue Ribbon Schools are created equal. Private schools like NDCL must achieve outstanding performance on national examinations. Public schools qualify for the award based on the very different standards of state exams.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our students and teachers,” said Principal Joseph A. Waler. “To earn the National Blue Ribbon Award during our 30th anniversary year is a wonderful tribute to the hard work of so many people who make NDCL a truly exceptional school. We are so blessed!”

NDCL will receive the prestigious award on November 8 during a celebration in Washington, D.C. that will feature Principal Mr. Joseph A. Waler hands a huge cone of cotton candy to sophomore Sebastian Tovar.

NDCL has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as an EXEMPLARY HIGH-PERFORMANCE SCHOOL, which means that our students perform in the TOP 15% in the U.S. on nationwide examinations (ACT/SAT).

Through a very detailed and competitive application process, Blue Ribbon Schools must also demonstrate visionary school leadership, expert faculty, vibrant school culture, rigorous curricula, and strong parent and community engagement.

Honoring 30 Years of NDCL

In my first year as president, I have listened readily and with great focus to the dynamic individuals who have built this school and its history, culture, and reputation for academic excellence.

Such incredible care has stewarded our school to this moment where we celebrate our 30th anniversary. And, I know fully that our history relies upon the foundational legacies of two amazing schools – Notre Dame Academy founded in 1878 and Cathedral Latin founded in 1916. One of the most compelling stories I have come to know this year, harkens back to the days of our beginnings as Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School.

The tireless efforts by Sr. Donna; Athletic Director, Rhonda Rickelman; and the newly hired football coach, Dan Barren, ensured that the Lions would be prepared to compete.

Brian challenged NDCL’s Class of 2018 to be transformative leaders during his address at NDCL’s 28th Commencement Exercises on May 25. Brian began by urging the graduates to remember that they are the products of those placed strategically by God in their lives.

It was the spring of 1987, 31 years ago when NDCL pioneers, Provincial Superior of the Sisters of Notre Dame, Sr. Rita Mary Harwood, SND; Provincial Treasurer, Sr. Margaret Hess, SND; and Principal of Notre Dame Academy, Sr. Donna Paluf, SND; with the Cathedral Latin Alumni Association Trustees – Mike McGarry, Pete Pucher, Rick Cavolo, Joe Spagnuolo, and others – foresaw this day and began the diligent work to ensure that thousands of students would benefit from an NDCL education.

Unexpectedly, Coach Barren suffered a heart attack and died in June of 1991. For his funeral Mass at the Notre Dame Education Center, his team lined Notre Dame Drive to honor him. Because he laid the foundation and started traditions for NDCL’s football program, Coach Barren was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.

In short order, decisions were made to start a football program, develop new teams for the boys joining the school, grade fields on the property for those same teams, add men’s restrooms, hire faculty and coaches, design and buy new uniforms, and have a school ready to open to boys and girls in the fall of 1988. Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin was born. Today, we recognize the sacrifices leaders made and the

Coach Barren was a well-respected teacher and high school football coach who came to NDCL to teach mathematics and build NDCL’s football program from the ground up. The legacy of excellence of Cathedral Latin’s football program was a blessing to NDCL. In the fall of 1990, Dan Barren led NDCL’s first varsity football team to a 6-4 record, competing against some of northeast Ohio’s toughest schools with a varsity football team made up of juniors and sophomores.

While his football teams were tough, Dan Barren took pride in starting the tradition of gathering his players before the statue of the Blessed Virgin to offer a prayer of thanksgiving after every game, win or lose.

Brian focused on the leadership dimension of NDCL’s mission statement: “transforming the world” means impacting your sphere of influence wherever that may be in the future, no matter how large or small. Leadership is the key to transforming the world,” he explained.

Honoring the legacy of Coach Barren and the first teams of NDCL, the 2018 commencement speaker was Brian Barren, the fifth of Dan and Catherine Barren’s six children. Brian is a 1989 graduate of Princeton University where he earned a degree in History and wrote his senior thesis on the integration of Major League Baseball. Brian played football for four years at Princeton and received an Army ROTC scholarship. He fulfilled his commitment to the US Army as a tank commander upon graduation. Brian spent 24 years with Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati leading Customer Business Development teams

1934-41 1934 – The Tower begins publication as a newspaper for Notre Dame Academy

1927 – Cathedral Latin’s football team goes undefeated, winning the City and State Championship. The team travels by train for 6 days to Waco, Texas for a National Championship game against Waco High School played in front of 20,000 fans on Christmas Day

“You are surrounded right now by leaders at NDCL who have helped shape your belief systems, have influenced how you make decisions, and have put you on a path to being the leader you ultimately choose to be,” he said.

1941– Ensign William Halloran `33 is killed in action aboard the U.S.S. Arizona at Pearl Harbor. He is the first in the city of Cleveland and the first of 92 Latin alumni who make the supreme sacrifice in WWII

1942 – The “Spirit of Latin,” a portrait of a charging lion crossing a goal line in Cleveland Municipal Stadium, is painted by Andy Liputz. The painting hangs in Latin’s gym as a symbol of athletic achievement and school spirit

1946 – The Charity game between Cathedral Latin and Holy Name draws 70,955 fans on November 23 – the largest recorded crowd at a high school football game in the state of Ohio.

Of the many outstanding leaders from the Class of 2018, these eight graduates fully embody NDCL’s mission! The transformation each graduate experienced at NDCL over the past four years has prepared them for college and a life of leadership.

Daniel Bosworth '18

Dan Bosworth jumped into his high school years at NDCL with gusto! “Through my leadership in the Lenten Project and both going on and leading Kairos, I saw a glimpse into a renewed faith life, and a new vision and mission to live by. Then, serving this past summer on our mission trip to Jamaica stretched me. I know now that my life is not about me but something much bigger.” During his junior and senior years, Dan served as the basketball and football team manager. He says this opportunity was life-changing in that it led him to pursue a degree in Accounting with a Minor in Sports Management at Miami University. “Without NDCL, I would not be pursuing my current studies or living the way I am living now: a faith-filled life of happiness and adventure!”

Alexis Hammer '18 Besides being named NDCL Athlete of the Year, Lexi Hammer was the first Lion voted Most Valuable Player unanimously by the North Coast League in girls basketball. “Lexi was a four year standout on the varsity basketball team. She received multiple all league awards, culminating with the league coaches unanimously selecting her as MVP of the NCL for her senior season,” says Head Girls Basketball Coach Joe Spicuzza. Through athletics, I made lifelong friends and role models who helped shape my values. Athletics taught me how to be a valuable team member.” Outside of athletics, Lexi landed the prestigious summer internship with the Cleveland Clinic for three consecutive summers. While she is undecided on her major, Lexi has an interest in pre-med and engineering. She credits NDCL for giving her the study habits and experiences needed at The Ohio State University. “I am very grateful for my four years at NDCL.”

Magan Ha '18

Michelle King '18

Magan Ha is described by NDCL Counselor Mr. Ryan McCafferty as “one of the most resilient and persevering students I have ever met.” While at NDCL, Magan earned the 2017 Rensselaer Medal for outstanding academic achievement in the study of math and science and was twice named Student of the Month in the disciplines of art and technology. In her senior year, Magan served as the president of the Medical Careers Club, where she helped organize Red Cross Blood Drives. Miss Maureen Wahl, advisor to the Club says, “Magan’s role included publicizing the event and organizing the workers, food and clean up. Our drives reached the Red Cross goals under her leadership.” Of the many prestigious colleges Magan was accepted to, she decided to spend her collegiate career at Princeton University where she has been named a Scholars Institute Fellow, an undergraduate who has demonstrated exceptional dedication to scholarly inquiry, leadership, and service.

An aspiring pediatrician, Michelle King credits NDCL’s Honors Program for challenging her academically in preparation for a rigorous course load at Case Western Reserve University.

Double majoring in cognitive science and psychology with a civil engineering minor, Michelle says, “My work in high school provided the momentum that I need to complete the same amount of coursework in college, but shaped by more complex concepts. NDCL provided a community that I felt comfortable enough in to emerge as a leader. I made life-long friends who continue to support me, as I support them.” Michelle’s interest in medicine led her to apply to the competitive Cleveland Clinic Science Internship Program during her sophomore year. Michelle landed the paid summer internship with the Clinic for three consecutive years. “It is the best experience that I could ask for and I plan to continue my relationship with the Clinic in the form of research and internships.”

Charlie Toman '18

Not only did Hailey Oppenlander lead as captain of the NDCL Dance Team and member of the Student Council, but she was also named a National Merit Finalist in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship competition. This multitalented young woman credits her matriculation to the University of Notre Dame to NDCL’s challenging college preparatory curriculum and workload. “The critical mindset [of thinking and analyzing] and work ethic carries NDCL students far,” says Hailey. And though she calls her NDCL education and teachers “incredible,” when considering what impacted her the most at NDCL, she points immediately to Kairos. “It was truly a blessing to get to know my classmates in a deeper way and to spend time with God away from the stress of everyday life. Kairos made me realize just how strong the faith-filled NDCL community is. Being involved with Campus Ministry and taking advantage of the many opportunities on campus (Adoration, Mass, retreats, and more) helped me grow in my relationship with Christ.”

Joshua Peroni '18

Football standout Josh Peroni entered Hillsdale College this fall with confidence. Josh says, “I knew going through the rigorous academic schedule at NDCL would make the jump to college a lot easier.” A finance major, Josh says NDCL prepared him spiritually. “The strong faith of the NDCL community has led me to participate in weekly bible study with the football team, as well as Sunday services with our team chaplain.” Josh credits his deepened spirituality to NDCL Chaplain Fr. Jim Caddy. “I consider Fr. Caddy a close friend and role model.” Josh points to the NDCL football team as the most impactful experience, a passion he continues at Hillsdale.

“NDCL taught me to be a leader in all aspects of life, while keeping God first. My four years at NDCL are something that I will cherish forever and I credit them with shaping me into the young man I am today.”

1964

Charlie Toman, an exercise science major at Valparaiso University, made a name for himself at NDCL, winning the OHSAA Division II State Golf Championship – twice – once as a freshman and again as a senior. “The golf program was very impactful for me. Coach Toni DeSanto taught me so much. I learned to be a part of a team and how to carry myself on and off the course.” A member of National Honors Society, Charlie appreciates how NDCL prepared him for the rigors of college due to the similarity in structure. “NDCL taught me how to manage my time and complete homework and assignments efficiently.” When considering the transformative aspects of his years at NDCL, Charlie points to his spiritual growth in theology classes and his relationship with Christ. “NDCL taught me how to act in a way Jesus would, and by following in his footsteps, I am able to change the world one step at a time.” Charlie hopes to become a professional golfer or possibly pursue a career in physical therapy or orthopedics.

Zachary Zienka '18

Zach Zienka, a marketing major at the University of Dayton, credits his smooth transition to college to the online learning and time management skills taught at NDCL. Zach says, “Most of my class assignments at UD are submitted online. Understanding how online assignments work because of Blackboard and Blended Learning Day assignments really prepared me.” Zach credits English teacher Ms. Vicki Frabotta and History and Head Football Coach, Mr. Andrew Mooney, as being most influential academically and athletically. “Ms. Frabotta set the bar high.

Through her teaching, I excelled in both reading and writing…Coach Mooney was a great role model. He made sure that studies came first.” Mooney says, “Zach was a standout captain and all around great student athlete because we could always count on him to care about and look after everybody around him.” Zach is the son of Teresa and Steven Zienka '92.

1966-76

1965 – The first day of classes at NDA is held on January 4 in the building now known as NDCL. Students in grades K-4 move from Shamrock Acres to the portable buildings across from NDA

1966 – One mile from Cathedral Latin, a racial disturbance erupts into riots in the Hough neighborhood 1970 – Shamrock Acres becomes the location for Notre Dame Montessori, educating children ages 3-14

1964 – NDA students move desks, chairs, books and more from the temporaries to the new high school building, constructed by Roediger Construction, Inc.

1976 – Despite an increase in scholarships and funding by alumni, Latin’s enrollment drops to 348 students

1979

1979 – Insurmountable challenges result in declining enrollment and Cathedral Latin closes its doors at the conclusion of the school year 2017-18 ANNUAL REPORT

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS

Maureen Wahl celebrates 40 Years as a Catholic educator Miss Maureen Wahl, the longest serving member of the NDCL faculty, reached the 40-year milestone of service to our school in 2018.

Wearing many hats throughout her years at Notre Dame Academy and NDCL, Maureen has served as a track and cross country coach, sophomore and senior class moderator, medical careers club moderator, Science Department Chair, and honors biology, anatomy and forensic science teacher. She also wrote the curriculum for the first environmental science course at NDA. Catholic education has maintained a strong presence throughout Maureen’s life. A graduate from Regina High School and St. Dominic School, Maureen’s first teaching position was at Corpus Christi Elementary School, teaching 6, 7, and 8th grades after graduating from St. Bonaventure University.

In 1978, she was hired at Notre Dame Academy by Sister Jacquelyn Gusdane, SND (formerly Sister Evarista) “In the beginning, my mentor at NDA was Sister Nadine, a chemistry teacher. Every Friday after school, we met with our mentors and they guided us,” says Maureen.

In recalling the year before the school transitioned from allgirls to co-ed, Maureen remembers students wore buttons

with the words, ‘Better Dead than Co-ed’ to class. “I told them they had to remove the buttons,” say Maureen. “It was the right decision to go co-ed. Enrollment was declining. The school would eventually close.”

“This was huge for us as a school. It put our name on the map,” says Maureen.

Though the co-ed transition was challenging, Maureen asserts the early years of NDCL were exciting! “We had new uniforms, sports, and colors. It was a new school and we were forming our own identity.” There were many changes that ensued. “We had to get rid of some of our all-girl school traditions like Ms. Smile and Notre Dame Day became NDCL Day.”

Other favorite memories include teaching her nieces and nephews (Stephanie `04, Ryan `11, and Chris Lund `15) and coaching Hall of Famer Kimberly Voyticky `94 who went on to run at Duke University.

Adding the boys athletic program was the biggest change because it altered the school’s culture. “We made sure there was an equal number of sports for both the boys and the girls.”

When asked how the classroom dynamic changed, Maureen says the young men were very humorous and often active learners. “I remember we took turns reading the handbook aloud in homeroom at the beginning of the school year and one of the boys read it in a funny voice. They were hilarious.

In biology class, the boys gave different insights than the girls which helped everyone learn.”

Maureen speaks highly of the first full co-ed class. “They were heaven-sent. This group was talented in so many ways: academics, athletics, music and art. They set a great positive tone to start a new school.”

Of her many coaching memories, Maureen’s favorite moment was watching the 1993 girls 4x800 relay team place third at the State competition. The team included Kelly Brown `94, Tina Lerz `94, Bridget Holzheimer `94, and Beth Holzheimer `93.

1988 1988 – Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School was officially created on March 14, 1988 through an affiliation agreement between the Sisters of Notre Dame and the trustees of the Cathedral Latin Alumni Association, Inc. “I remember the day Kim received her acceptance letter to Duke. She called me to share the good news.”

For Maureen, the most rewarding part of her vocation is hearing from former students. “I love when former students visit and tell me of their successes. It’s rewarding to hear that my class helped them in their career aspirations,” says Maureen.

The newest phenomenon for Maureen is teaching the children of her former students. “I never thought I’d teach the children of the students that I taught both at NDA and NDCL. Some of the mothers I taught at NDA were at Meet the Teachers Night this year.”

When asked if she plans on retiring soon, Maureen insists that she is here to stay. “As long as I can, I will teach here. As long as I do a good job, I will be here,” says Maureen.

Roediger Family Legacy: 55 Years of Service and Dedication While walking the halls with Bill Roediger, owner’s rep for Notre Dame Schools, he bends down and picks up a piece of trash. “I treat this place like it is my own,” says Bill.

Bill’s relationship with the Sisters of Notre Dame dates back to his mother, Rita (Masek `33) Roediger who graduated third in her class from Notre Dame Academy and then received a scholarship to Notre Dame College. While at a NDC dance, Rita met her husband, Stanley Roediger, a carpenter. The two married in 1941.

“My father and grandfather found their niche in building custom homes. Together they founded William A. Roediger & Son Construction. Following the war, in 1946, my Dad expanded his efforts and founded Roediger Construction, Inc. (RCI), concentrating on commercial and institutional projects.

They built apartments, churches, schools, and hospitals,” says Bill.

Under Stan’s guidance, RCI grew and developed a great reputation. He was known for constructing several Cleveland landmarks including Hillcrest Hospital, The Chesterfield Apartments, CSU’s Main Classroom Building, and the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse in Richfield.

Of his many projects, Stan proudly completed Notre Dame College’s west wing of the Administration building. There had been several modern additions proposed for the west wing.

However, Sister Mary Marthe, SND asked Stan if he could duplicate the architectural style of the unfinished structure.

“So began a two year challenge for Dad to complete the west wing as originally envisioned some 40 years before. Most people can not tell that the west wing is an addition,” says Bill.

Throughout high school and college, Bill worked with RCI’s skilled superintendents, project managers and estimators, learning the trade and developing his skills. “Of course my best mentor was my Dad. He taught me to leave a part of yourself wherever you work. Following college, I was blessed that for the next 25 years, I first worked for Dad, then alongside him, and later as President of Roediger Construction, Inc.”

“With my family’s ties to the SND community, I jumped at the opportunity. After all, Mom and Dad taught me that if you have something people value – not just money but skill or knowledge – you should help out and give back to your community.”

While on NDCL’s Board, Bill served as Vice Chairman of the Board and Chairman of the Buildings and Grounds Committee. “I had to start at the bottom in helping Tony Bozeglav (Director of Facilities) fix the sewage system. Later, I oversaw the renovations to the cafeteria, parking lots, and tennis courts.”

In 1963, Stan was selected to construct the new Notre Dame Academy building (now NDCL) in Geauga County. The rolling hillside provided several site locations. Working with Sister Margaret Hess, SND, the flatter west land was selected. Thus, construction began on the school that has been educating young women and later young men for 55 years.

After his Board term ended in 2012, Sister Jacquelyn Gusdane, SND asked Bill to serve as NDCL’s owner’s rep. He oversaw capital projects such as Lozick Field at Lion Stadium, the Baker Gymnasium, Annunciation Chapel, and the Pat and Janet O’Brien Center for the Performing Arts, featuring the Sam J. Frankino Stage.

Around 1990, Bill began working with Sister Margaret Gorman, SND at Notre Dame College. First on minor renovations but later rebuilding after a major fire damaged the same portion of the NDC’s Administration Building that Stan Roediger had constructed years before. During this interaction, Sister Margaret learned that Bill had been the Chairman of the Board of St. Edward’s High School founding Board of Trustees. She asked if he would help in the creation of a Board of Directors for Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. With Bill’s wife Darcy’s loving support and guidance, he served on NDCL’s Board of Directors for 10 years. Darcy, well aware of the value of a quality education, also served on the Board of Lawrence School, a school for students with language-based learning differences in Broadview Heights.

Working with Sister Jacquelyn, “I realized the value of a team player representing only the owner’s interests in construction projects. I used that knowledge to form Roediger Construction Services, LLC, offering Owner’s Rep services to several clients.

Currently, I represent Notre Dame Schools, Cleveland State University, Cleveland Gray’s Museum, Medical Services Corp and others.”

The Melding of Lasting Traditions: Notre Dame Schools celebrates 140 years of Catholic education For the past 140 years, Notre Dame Schools has benefited from the rich educational heritage and vision of the Sisters of Notre Dame, the Cathedral Latin Alumni Association, and thousands of Catholic families seeking a transformational and faithful education for their children. Thirty years ago, two of Cleveland’s oldest and best Catholic traditions – Notre Dame Academy and Cathedral Latin School – merged to form Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, inspiring 4,978 young women and men to transform our communities and world.

The historic synopsis that follows contains information gathered from Notre Dame Academy’s 100 Years Young (1978); History of Cathedral Latin School 1916 –1979, Gene Gibbons '44, (2006); Seasons magazine: “Sisters of Notre Dame Celebrate 60 Years in Geauga County,” (Spring 2008); When the Lions Roared, Timothy Hudak (2002); and The History of Notre Dame Academy, Sister Mary Patrice Kelly, SND '17 (1978).

The history of NDCL and Notre Dame Elementary School begins at the end of the nineteenth century when Catholic immigrants particularly from Eastern Europe immigrated to Cleveland to fill industrial jobs. The Catholic population increased rapidly thus demanding Catholic educational opportunities.

On July 4, 1874, eight Sisters of Notre Dame, including foundress Sister Maria Aloysia, SND and Superior General Sister Maria Chrysostom, SND, landed in the United States seeking religious freedom. At the time, the Bismarck government passed Kulturkampf laws that included the removal of religious sisters from teaching positions in the public elementary schools.

Knowing the Sisters of Notre Dame educational ministry extended from kindergarten to teacher education, Bishop Richard Gilmour invited the Sisters to staff parish schools in Cleveland. His intent was to set teacher certification standards for these schools.

The Sisters were welcomed to Saint Peter’s Church in Cleveland where they resided in a small home near the church. Under the leadership of Sister Maria Chrysostom, SND, Notre Dame Academy, a school serving boys and girls in grades 1-12 was founded in 1878 with 14 students. Enrollment grew steadily and an additional building was added to NDA for the establishment of a boarding school in 1880. In 1891, the boarding school became a “normal” or teacher preparatory school for girls entering the convent and the enrollment of boys was limited to those under the age of 10. By May 1, 1897, students and teachers moved to a five story building at 18th and Superior Avenue.

By 1912, Notre Dame Academy’s enrollment increased beyond the school’s capacity so the Sisters purchased the Joseph K. Bole estate on Ansel Road. For the next three years, construction progressed on a large structure in the Norman Gothic style to serve as the Sisters’ provincial house and Notre Dame Academy. To this day, this beautiful building is affectionately remembered as “The Castle on Ansel.”

In 1916, less than two miles away from Notre Dame Academy, Cleveland Bishop John Farrelly announced the creation of an all-boys, Catholic, college preparatory school. Thirteen

diocesan priests would staff the school for academic courses and five Marianists Brothers would teach science and business courses under the leadership of diocesan priest Father Edward Mooney, who served as principal.

The name of the school, “Cathedral Latin” was derived from the Bishop’s intent to model it after Boston Latin School in Massachusetts, the first and oldest college preparatory school in the United States. The diocese also planned to teach Church Latin as part of the curriculum. “Cathedral” was chosen because the diocese planned to build a cathedral on the current site of Severance Hall and the school would partner with the cathedral community. Such plans were never complete due to Bishop Farrelly’s untimely death in 1921.

Cathedral Latin School opened its doors to 130 young men in a temporary headquarters at 11105 Euclid Avenue – now Hitchcock Hall of Case Western Reserve University – in September of 1916. Bishop Farrelly and Father Mooney quickly realized that the quarters were too small to accommodate the demand for higher enrollment. Subsequently, property on East 107th Street between Euclid and Carnegie Avenues was purchased for a new school building.

The new building’s cornerstone was set in 1917 to initiate the Italian Renaissance design by Boston Architect E. T. Graham.

Construction was complete in 1918 and on September 16, the first day of the school year, classes were held in the new Cathedral Latin School with an enrollment of 385 students.

Both Notre Dame Academy and Cathedral Latin School prospered, growing in enrollment, academic excellence, and

athletics in the 1920s. The Academy terminated the enrollment of boys by 1920 to focus on educating young women.

Each school developed their own traditions and school colors.

The young women of Notre Dame Academy honored Mary in the blue of their uniforms and they celebrated the spirit of Notre Dame by establishing Notre Dame Day.

school outgrew its quarters on Ansel Road, the decision to relocate the provincial house and novitiate to Geauga County was made in 1948. The original purchase of a 150-acre dairy farm called “Shamrock Acres” was followed by the acquisition of two other parcels of land – 150 acre “Ivanhoe Farm” and 212 acres of land on Butternut Road.

In the 1920s, Cathedral Latin offered new branches of study including French, chemistry and physics. Juniors were given the opportunity to choose between scientific and academic programs. The Senior Class of 1920 established a school newspaper, The Latineer, and the first yearbook Purple and Gold was published in 1922. The young men of Latin donned purple and gold because purple is a symbol of royal majesty and triumph, and gold because of its scarcity and the old adage, ‘as good as gold.’ Like their school colors, the young men of Latin were expected to be as ‘good as gold’ and ‘triumph’ in their studies, athletics, and extracurricular activities.

Progress was evident on the Geauga County campus when the first kindergarten class began in a renovated barn, Villa Agnes, on Shamrock Acres in 1957. Sister Mary Harold Helms, SND '26 taught 29 boys and girls at the newly established Notre Dame Elementary School.

Leadership changes ensued at Cathedral Latin in the fall of 1922 when the Cleveland Diocese asked the Marianist Brothers to assume operation of the school. All parish priests who had previously served as faculty were replaced by Brothers of Mary.

Of the many exciting moments in Latin history, one football pep rally in September of 1926 caused an uproar amongst the student body. Professional baseball player Babe Ruth walked into Latin’s auditorium. Ruth addressed the group encouraging them to “never give up.”

While both NDA and Latin saw a drop in enrollment during the Great Depression, both schools became heavily involved in the relief effort. NDA held food and clothing drives and Cathedral Latin participated in the city’s first charity football game against Holy Name in 1931.

During World War II, many Latin students enlisted in the military lying about their age. To raise money for the war effort, the Sodalities of Latin and Notre Dame Academy coorganized a school dance. The event was held in late January of 1942 in Notre Dame Academy’s gymnasium. At the price of 37 cents per student, the dance was a huge success and the first ever of its kind between the two schools.

With enrollment dwindling at Ansel Road, the Sisters decided in 1962 to relocate Notre Dame Academy to the Geauga County campus. On September 6, 1963, 345 students began the new academic year in temporary facilities. During the school year, a barn was converted into a residence hall for 40 boarding students and Roediger Construction, Inc. began building the new school.

The 1963-64 school year at Cathedral Latin peaked with an enrollment of 1,260 young men. The marching band also hit a high note during the 1964-65 school year when it reached its largest size in school history with 120 members.

Latin’s enrollment maintained strength until July of 1966 when a racial disturbance occurred in Cleveland’s Hough neighborhood, one mile from the school. Violent riots erupted and the National Guard was called to restore order to the city. This event had a profound effect on Cathedral Latin in the coming years as the Catholic population migrated out of Cleveland to the suburbs.

On December 15, 1964, it was announced that Notre Dame Academy’s new school building was complete. The big “moving day” occurred a week later. Students created a “desk parade” moving desks, furniture, and utensils from the temporaries to the new school all the while joyously singing Christmas carols. The first day of classes in the new building (now NDCL) was January 4, 1965.

While graduating classes held reunions, dinner parties, and other events to celebrate their years at Cathedral Latin, there was no formal alumni organization established until the spring of 1949 when 20 graduates established the Cathedral Latin Alumni Association.

Latin’s enrollment continued to drop from 1,142 students in 1966 to 348 students in 1976 despite an increase in fundraising and scholarships by alumni. Insurmountable challenges caused Cathedral Latin to tragically close at the conclusion of the 1979 school year. Despite their school’s closing, the Cathedral Latin Alumni Association continued to organize with the intention of creating a new Cathedral Latin School.

Between 1942 and 1945, the elementary program was phased out entirely from Notre Dame Academy, allowing enrollment for young women in grades 9-12 to grow. As the Sisters and

At the time, no Catholic high school for boys existed in Geauga County. Coincidentally, the Cathedral Latin Alumni Association was looking to carry on their school’s legacy at the same time.

On March 14, 1988, Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School was officially created through an affiliation agreement between the Sisters of Notre Dame and the trustees of the Cathedral Latin Alumni Association, Inc. The new co-ed school would meld traditions and colors, including: royal blue from NDA, gold from Latin, NDCL Day from Notre Dame Day, and the mascot, Lions, carried on from Cathedral Latin.

To meet the needs of NDCL’s growing athletic programs, the McGarry Gymnasium was built in 1990. Many “first” athletic moments ensued for the school – the first time the football team beat rival Lake Catholic in 1994 and the first State Championship clinched by the boys golf team in 2000.

Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin became a school sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame on July 1, 2003 with its own governing Board of Directors. In 2006, the President-Principal model of leadership was launched with Sister Margaret Gorman, SND as president and Mr. Joseph A. Waler as the school’s first lay principal.

At Notre Dame Elementary School, Mrs. Barbara Doering succeeded Sister Carol Marek, SND as the school’s first lay principal in 2008. Under Mrs. Doering’s leadership, NDES has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School (2014) and a STEM School through the Ohio Academy of Science (2015).

Between 2008 and 2016, under the leadership of then president Sister Jacquelyn Gusdane, SND (formerly Sister Evarista, SND), major improvements to NDCL’s facilities were made, including: a renovated cafeteria, tennis courts, significant upgrades in security and technology, Lozick Field at Lion Stadium, the Pat and Janet O’Brien Center for Performing Arts featuring the Sam J. Frankino Stage, Eugene T. Baker '37 Gymnasium, Advancement Offices, the Sisters of Notre Dame Learning Commons, Annunciation Chapel and The Father James P. O’Donnell '48 Campus Ministry Center.

On July 1, 2015, the Sisters of Notre Dame met with stakeholders of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin and Notre Dame Elementary School to create the Notre Dame Schools Board of Directors. This group of Sisters of Notre Dame, alumni, parents, and friends is charged to sustain and strengthen Catholic education on the campus of Notre Dame Schools as both schools move ‘Better Together’ into the future.

This past year the Notre Dame community and the NDS Board of Directors welcomed our new President Dr. Michael Bates and his family to our beautiful campus.

This total campus approach was applied during the creation of the strategic plan which will help to sustain and strengthen the educational vision and principles of the Sisters of Notre Dame in both schools.

I can report positively on several of the goals of the strategic plan. First, both schools continue to operate in a position of financial strength, strong leadership, excellent academic programs, and a highly committed faculty and staff. Second, the staff and faculty of both schools have begun to create mutually beneficial

It is with pride that we share the good news of another strong financial year for our school. We engage an outside CPA firm to perform audit services on an annual basis. Although the audit is wrapping up, we anticipate no material changes to the operational results. On behalf of the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors, we seek to ensure disciplined stewardship of our resources while providing a transformative Catholic education for nearly 700 young women and men.

Who would have dreamed in 1988 there would be laptops, tablets and even 3D printers in our classrooms for everyday use? Just as classrooms have transformed since 1988, the school is poised financially to continue the transformation process.

As we begin our 30th year as a co-educational high school, NDCL continues to thrive and constantly looks forward to making enhancements to our beautiful 75acre campus.

The school invested $1.7 million in capital expenditure projects this summer to enhance student life and learning. From the Wollschleger Weight Training and Wellness Center, to 200 new laptops and three new collaborative booths in the Sisters of Notre Dame Learning Commons, every facet of student learning has been impacted. These investments will provide dividends for the next 30 years. None of these improvements would be possible without the efforts of staff, the generosity of our benefactors, and the tuition investment of our families.

As we look forward to another 30 years, we can only dream as to what classrooms will look like and what new educational tools will be available for our students. In order to realize these dreams, we will continue to balance budgets, invest in our infrastructure, and grow the endowment. We will build the strong foundation of these past 30 years and continue our mission of “educating leaders who transform the world, as Jesus did, by living the truth in love.”

NDES Financial Statement This year, we celebrate the milestone of 140 years of Catholic education sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame. From a modest beginning in a remodeled barn, Notre Dame Elementary School has evolved into a robust school that educates 585 students from preschool through eighth grade. Our strong enrollment and financial stability is possible because of the amazing community that generously supports and believes in our mission — the Sisters of Notre Dame, our parents, grandparents, teachers, alumni and friends of the school.

Your time, energy, and financial support are some of our greatest assets.

Knowing this, we judiciously manage the school’s budget and your investment serves as a strong beginning for the transformation of our school. This fall we are beginning one of the largest renovation projects in the elementary school’s history as we transform the former pool space, gifted by the Sisters of Notre Dame, into a collaborative learning area and multi-purpose room. Our hope is that this renovation project is just the beginning. We strive to provide facilities that will enhance and support our strong academic program so that our students experience a truly transformative Catholic education. 3rd Annual Lions Golf Classic The Notre Dame Schools community gathered at Fowler’s Mill Golf Course on Friday, September 7 for the 3rd annual Lions Golf Classic. A whopping 176 golfers registered for the outing which net over $32,000 for the students of Notre Dame Elementary and Notre DameCathedral Latin.

Over 175 alumni and guests from Notre Dame Academy, Cathedral Latin, and NDCL gathered on Friday, June 8 in NDCL’s Sisters of Notre Dame Learning Commons to celebrate Reunion 2018. This year’s reunion honored class years ending in 3 and 8. All enjoyed live music, tours of the school, delicious appetizers, beer, wine, dessert and more. The reunion festivities concluded with Mass presided by Reverend Frederick F. Pausche on Sunday, June 10 in NDCL’s Annunciation Chapel.

The Origin of the “Lions” In 1936, the Latin football team had new uniforms and a new name.

The uniform consisted of “bulldog” helmets, navy blue jerseys with gold stripes on the sleeves, gold numbers, and army rip-cord pants. As for the name, a poll was taken during the 1935-36 school year in which the students were asked to pick a nickname for Latin’s athletic teams. The results of the poll were formally announced on Friday, October 16, 1936.

The name, “Lions” beat out the Panthers and Mustangs with 629 votes.

History of the Charity Game Owen D. Young, a member of President Herbert Hoover’s relief committee suggested that every city should arrange a charity football game to help support the depression relief effort.

Cleveland’s civic and school leaders began working on a plan for such a game in September of 1931. It was announced later in October that Cleveland would hold a charity football game on Saturday, November 28, 1931 in Cleveland Municipal Stadium.

The game was sponsored by The Plain Dealer and all of the proceeds would be directed to its annual Give-a-Christmas Fund. The only requirement for a team to be considered to play in the charity football game for Cleveland’s high school championship was that the team had to finish the season as its league champion. Cathedral Latin was chosen to play Central High in the first Charity Game. Latin won the game and the city championship, 18-0, in front of 19,304 fans.

The Birth of Notre Dame Day The first Notre Dame Day was held on October 21, 1921 to increase school spirit and honor SND Provincial Mother Mary Evarista, SND. The day’s festivities began with a visit to the school chapel followed by a parade on Ansel Road with the students dressed in the regalia of their class colors. The students then honored Mother Mary Evarista in the auditorium, installed the school class officers, indulged in a picnic lunch, and finished the day watching a silent movie. The Notre Dame Day tradition has carried on present day to NDCL Day.
