A Letter from the Provincial Superior

Dear Friends, With the Thanksgiving season upon us we are reminded of God’s love through the abundance of love and gifts we share with one another. We are grateful to you, our family and friends, for your continued friendship with the Sisters of Notre Dame.

Without your partnership in mission, the many services we offer both locally and internationally would not be possible.

This “Special Edition” Network highlights the artistic creativity of some of our sisters, and the creative generosity of some of our volunteers and associates. They have each found a unique way to use their gifts in service. Their stories are filled with pride in tradition, compassion for the suffering, and hope for the future. We hope they remind you of your own creativity!

Many of you have also enjoyed the annual SND Chicken Barbecue & Boutique, held on the last two Sundays in September for more than 50 years.

During these two Sundays over 7,500 meals are served, thanks to over 400 volunteers and families who contribute to the camaraderie and fun. Each job is important and we are grateful for those who set-up and take down, who bake or

make crafts, who cook or carry the food and cut the pies: they all contribute to the whole and make the day the successful event that it is. What an overwhelming feeling it is for our Sisters to be able to stay connected with thousands of friends and families who have been so important to us over the years! It truly is a grand family reunion, and we look forward to sharing it with you next year.

Thank you for being a part of our family and for giving so generously to the mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame. Let us find joy in the journey as we partner together to make a difference in our world today. May you and your family enjoy each other during this Thanksgiving season, as you are remembered in prayer for the blessing you are.

Sisters of Notre Dame Express the Spiritual Through Art “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free,” described Michelangelo.

Likewise, three Sisters of Notre Dame are using art to communicate their love of creation and the divine – expressing through clay, oils and other media words that escape them.

“Our desire is to encourage, motivate, inspire, uplift and even stimulate action,” says Sr. Megan Dull, SND. And borrowing the words of Auguste Rodin, “The main thing is to be moved, to love, to hope, to tremble, to live.”

Megan Dull, SND A thin, white, odorless powder of clay coats the scratched pine floors, cluttered work tables, and numerous ceramic “works-in-progress” strewn across Sr. Megan Dull’s studio. The passionate artist and environmental advocate shares TerraVista Studios, at 1400 E. 30th Street in Cleveland, Ohio with four other local Cleveland artists. Despite the appearance of disorder, Sr. Megan works meticulously with her hands, gently gliding a polished river stone over a sculpture’s surface. Her gaze is concentrated, discriminating. In the face of this intrusion, she graciously smiles and welcomes guests into her hallowed space.

The Regina High School graduate entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1966. Sr. Megan began studying art education and graduated in 1971 from Notre Dame College in South Euclid,

where she earned a B.A. in Art Education. She taught art and religion for one year at Notre Dame Academy and then spent over four years designing & illustrating the Christ Our Life religion series. During the next several years Sr. Megan went back to Raleigh NC as well as Regina to teach. While teaching ceramics and other art courses in the art department she resumed her own education, earning an M.A. in Art Education from Case Western Reserve University, a joint program with the Cleveland Institute of Art, in 1982.

The passionate artist says two things move her deeply – kinship with the earth and a profound sense of communion with the Sacred permeating the cosmos.

“Clay speaks to me of the inseparable link between ourselves and the life energies of the earth. My studio work flows directly from these sources,” describes Sr. Megan. “I do not do religious images but work with dream images that take me to a deep place – where my strongest work comes.

I view ‘religion’ as the thin layer of skin; underneath this skin is where real spirituality lives.”

Sr. Megan says. “Working with clay, I feel a close connection with nature.

Clay is one of the oldest materials of art. Through my work, I’ve become more sensitive to the materials I use.

She eventually ended up teaching at Notre Dame College in 1986.

“After earning my M.A. from Case, I taught ceramics at Notre Dame College but found the only time I could do my own work was in the summers. My work as an artist hit a wall. Artist friends convinced me to pursue an M.F.A. (Master’s in Fine Arts) so I enrolled at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and went on to graduate with an M.F.A. in Ceramics in 1998,” Sr. Megan recalls, brushing a hint of dust off her nose. “I was happy the Sisters provided me with this opportunity. They put a value on what I was doing as an artist. Later, they supported

The award-winning artist often works with figures, perhaps her most powerful work to-date. Her series, “Hallowing,” of pit-fired figures, emerged shortly after the horrific 9-11 event. “This and so many other world grievances and atrocities add to our underlying sense of deep loss,” Sr. Megan describes. “Perhaps we can begin to bridge the chasms between us and learn again how to hallow each other.”

“One of the most enduring phrases I carry with me is the Native American Mitakuye Oyasin, translated to ‘we are all related.’ Through my Kinship series, I attempt to reinforce that we are all one in this interconnected web of life.”

In addition to her personal studio work, she serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Fine Arts Department at Notre Dame College, South Euclid, teaching courses in ceramics, three-dimensional design, and professional practices.

Laura Wingert, SND Sr. Laura Wingert took to art like a child to rain puddles. The 71-yearold artist grew up in Canton, Ohio, home of the clay soil. “I started manipulating clay for fun as a child.

Later, while babysitting children of an artist, I had some basic drawing lessons. It wasn’t until attending Notre Dame College, in South Euclid, that I was introduced to the formal study of art,” Sr. Laura explains. The budding art major entered the Sisters of Notre Dame between her sophomore and junior years at college.

“Upon graduating from college, I taught art at Our Lady of Lourdes High School and Cleveland Central Catholic, and other high schools in North Carolina, Virginia and Ohio.

Eventually, I served as an art teacher for more than 35 years. Thankfully, I was able to find personal time to work in an art room, particularly when I taught in Virginia. They had a beautiful studio in the school there,” Sr. Laura recalls with a smile.

Today, the energetic Sister, works in her own small studio at the SND Education Center – a quiet room equipped with a kiln for her ceramic art and adequate ventilation “so that the fumes won’t bother the other Sisters.”

“I love nature and spend a great deal of time in the woods. This is where I find my inspiration for my ceramic works,” admits Sr. Laura. “I hope people are able to see, in the art pieces I create, a reflection of the beauty of God.” “My love of nature comes from my family who were farmers and artists.

In my earth bowl collection, I try to suggest layers of the earth, water, rocks and stone. I use many textures to make the bowls come alive.”

Maresa Lilley, SND Sr. Maresa Lilley, 63, attended Notre Dame Academy in Munson Township as a 14-year-old aspirant. She lived on campus.

She recalls her introduction to art. “As a child, I loved dabbling in art. My Christmas gifts were always paint-bynumber sets, mosaics or other craft kits,” Sr. Maresa laughs.

“I have taught elementary school art classes most of my teaching career– projects like making stained-glass windows out of tissue paper,” she recalls. “It wasn’t until 1987 when my brother-in-law gave me a set of oil paints that I really grew to love this medium. Thanks to him, I haven’t been able to keep the lids on my oil paints since.”

Like Sr. Laura, Sr. Maresa works out of her own studio at the SND Education Center on Auburn Road in Chardon Ohio. Over the years, the oil painter has sold more than 550 paintings, and now with the internet, her paintings are beginning to cross the United States. Some have gone as far as Belgium and Montreal, Canada.

Also in her studio are playful ceramic pieces she completed – a slice of pie with a small fork on a dessert plate or a stack of pancakes smothered in maple syrup. Sr. Laura also creates vases, bird baths and beautiful ceramic leaf sculptures. Her work is annually displayed at the Holden Arboretum Christmas Show, SND Education Center Gallery and SND Chicken Barbecue & Boutique.

Sr. Maresa Lilley adds the final touches to this still life in her studio.

“I tend to go to the essence of things, contemplating with my paintbrush. It is an exercise in gratitude – a way to celebrate the butterfly or flower.”

“I call myself a ‘painter,’ not an ‘artist,’ since I have not been formally trained, except for a few workshops and a few night courses at Cleveland Institute of Art,” notes Sr. Maresa humbly. “However, I have read widely on oil painting over the years.

The artists that influenced me most include Monet, Renoir, Degas, and of recent history, Helen Van Wyk, and Daniel McCaw. Van Wyk was an impressionistic/realism painter who used earth tones with gobs of paint.

McCaw is also very impressionistic, but uses primary colors to create warm and cool tones.”

While her earlier work included earth tones, she now creates most paintings with primary colors, like McCaw, with generally simple compositions and often bold contrast.

“I tend to paint rather thinly,” admits the petite Sister. “I try to paint loosely, but I end up tighter than I want to be. McCaw uses big brushes and a lot of sloppy paint. I like using bigger brushes because they force me to be less restrained and softer in expression.”

Paintings of flowers, butterflies, still life, religious art and landscapes are neatly displayed throughout her studio. Scanning her work, she remarks, “I would like to paint more religious art, though for me, it takes more time and much more soul. I tend to go to the essence of things, contemplating with my paintbrush.

to proclaim the goodness of God. Hopefully, I proclaim His goodness in painting, and answer something of the viewer’s thirst for that goodness, as well as for beauty, truth, and simplicity.”

While Sr. Maresa has served as a teacher, a principal, a finance manager, and recently a missionary in the Philippines, she feels most at home in her art studio. She is grateful to the Sisters of Notre Dame for the space and the opportunity to make art, and to begin an online store, “Paintgrace”.

Associates extend charism of Sisters of Notre Dame Desiring to further share the richness of their history, spirituality and mission with others, in 2000, the Sisters of Notre Dame initiated the “SND Associate relationship.” This relationship with the Sisters invites men and women seeking to renew and deepen their spirituality and commitment to the mission of Jesus, to formation in the spirituality and mission the Sisters of Notre Dame.

Today, there are 105 Associates in Cleveland and another 79 in Florida.

“As Sisters of Notre Dame, we recognize a deep experience of God’s goodness and provident care as our special gift from the Holy Spirit. This ‘charism,’ or ‘gift,’ leads us to entrust ourselves to our good and loving God and impels us in our mission to bring this experience of God’s caring goodness into the lives of all people,” explains Sr. Regina Davala, SND, Co-Director of Associates. “An Associate relationship allows others to deepen their relationship with God and witness God’s goodness and provident care in their own daily life.”

Adult men and women of all ages are welcome to become SND Associates – whether single, married, divorced, mothers, fathers, Catholic or from another Christian faith. Other

religious communities in addition to the Sisters of Notre Dame have Associate programs; Associates typically feel called to a particular religious community.

Entering an SND Associate relationship begins with an interview.

“We get a sense of who and where they are in their spiritual journey,” says Sr. Regina. “They are asked to write about their faith journey.”

Upon acceptance, the “candidate” begins a year-long journey. This formation year includes monthly meetings to learn about the charism, mission and spirituality of the Sisters of Notre Dame. The year also includes a retreat at which each candidate writes her/his personal covenant.

For Associates, each year has a theme and includes prayer, Scripture reading, and participating in a faith-sharing group that meets once a month at a time and place of the group’s own choosing, as well as, a retreat and two all-Associate gatherings. The highlight of every year is the Associate covenant celebration in August in which the candidates pray their covenants and receive their Associate pin. Associates then renew their covenants, and those celebrating 10-year anniversaries are recognized.

Sr. Regina says the Associate relationship offers a significant means of renewing the Sisters of Notre Dame. “It’s a win-win relationship,” says Sr. Regina with a smile. “During this formation year, each candidate has a companion Sister who meets with the candidate monthly and walks with them through the year.

The Sisters find it a blessing to walk the journey with this person. It renews them!”

Sr. Mary John Paul Bobak, CoDirector of the Associates, concurs, “We say ‘Associate relationship,’ not ‘Associate program,’ because it is a shared relationship, a mutual promise, not one-sided. We are not there as teachers. It involves a commitment on the part of both.”

She continues, “Associates are encouraged to share their gifts and talents in whatever way possible with their families, the local Church and the Sisters of Notre Dame; give service to others – particularly the poor and marginalized; likewise, the Sisters of Notre Dame welcome this opportunity to share their spirituality and heritage.

The SND’s first Associate group made their “covenant” in August of 2001. A covenant is a promise to God and the community that they want to share in the mission and charism of the Sisters of Notre Dame in their own lives. Each Associate writes this personal covenant that describes how they will accomplish this promise, whether through attending daily Mass, reading the Bible more, relating better with their spouse better, etc. This past August 2013, six candidates completed their formation journey and celebrated their beginning as Associates.

“It is not like the vow as a Sister,” clarifies Sr. Mary John Paul. “They may decide down the road that they no longer want to participate. On the other hand, if health concerns or geography causes an Associate to be unable to make meetings, we are happy to make accommodations.”

Both Sisters describe that there are homebound Associates as well as those living in other states.

“Each year, typically five to 10 people begin. They learn about our history as Sisters of Notre Dame, our charism, social justice, our devotion to Mary, and everything important to us,” Sr. Regina states.

In the past, two married couples, a mother and daughter, a father and daughter, several relatives of Sisters, and employees of the Sisters of Notre Dame experienced the formation year together and entered into SND Associate relationship. Some SND Associates are active in many SND ministries including teaching, tutoring adults and children, service opportunities and much more. In the near future, some Associates may participate in a week of pilgrimage, immersion and service in Nicaragua.

“Associates will become all the more important in continuing the mission and charism of the Sisters of Notre Dame as our religious congregation continues to age,” Sr. Regina concludes. “We’ve seen people’s lives strengthened. They take on a greater intentionality and consciousness of God’s presence and often describe experiencing greater peace and a sense of coming home.”

Margaret Paluf, NDA ‘80 smiles as she reflects on a family tradition that spans four generations. Her family’s SND Chicken Barbecue & Boutique story Tom Sterkel begins with Margaret’s grandfather volunteering each year at the annual Notre Dame Academy ham dinner fundraiser, sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame on Ansel Road in Cleveland. Margaret’s father Tom Sterkel picked up the family tradition, volunteering in 1974 at the SND Chicken Barbecue & Boutique when his eldest daughter Mary Kay Sterkel ‘78 was attending NDA in Munson Township. Impressed by the quality education and mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame, the proud father went on to send his other four daughters to NDA: Maureen ‘79, 8

attended St. Anselm’s, and I have always had a great amount of respect for the Sisters of

“Our entire family volunteered each year at the SND Chicken Barbecue & Boutique. My sisters and I were part of the student population. I can still remember getting a half-day off school at NDA to help prepare for the event. Usually, we rolled silverware.”

When Margaret’s future husband Mark Paluf appeared on the scene, he joined in the tradition, helping Tom Sterkel in the pits. When this task became unnecessary with the use of caterers, Tom and Mark directed traffic, posted signs and performed other odd jobs. (Mark’s cousin, Sr. Donna Paluf, is also a Sister of Notre Dame.) Eventually, Margaret and Mark’s daughter Amy Paluf, a 2011 graduate of Regina High School, joined in the SND Chicken Barbecue & Boutique tradition, helping alongside her parents each year.

“My father was very big on service – putting your time in and giving back,” Margaret reminisces. “He really enjoyed volunteering at the SND Barbecue & Boutique. He appreciated that the Sisters rolled up their sleeves and worked alongside other volunteers at the event.”

Joanne Liebenauer volunteers at the SND Chicken Barbecue & Boutique each year in addition to volunteering twice a week at the SND Health Care Center and Mission Advancement Office. Joanne is particularly compassionate in her work with Sisters suffering from dementia.

She continues, “We continue to block off the last two weekends of September each year and eventually pick one Sunday to go. I look forward to it. I get to see former classmates and teachers. I also enjoy working alongside the Sisters.

They are so grateful for your service.

They really appreciate your time and effort. As my dad always said, ‘You receive a hundred thank yous.’ Tom Sterkel passed away in March 2011, but

“The Sisters are very nice. Without their prayers, I might not be here now. I recently had an automobile accident but am back in action,” Joanne happily reports.

Another woman of action and service is Pat Fischer, of Aurora, who is entering her fourth year as a SND Chicken Barbecue & Boutique volunteer. The NDA ‘53 graduate says the Sisters of Notre Dame made a strong impression on her as a student. “You don’t realize how continued on page 10

an education like that impacts your entire life,” Pat states. Most of the time she volunteers for Notre Dame Global Missions’ Fair Trade and craft sales, as well as with the SND Health Care Center.

“My dear friend Marilou Strathern and I have known each other since the cradle. Our mothers were best friends. In fact, my mother was her mother’s maid of honor. Marilou asked me to initially volunteer for the SND Barbecue & Boutique. The rest is history.”

In addition to volunteering for the SND Chicken Barbecue & Boutique, Pat volunteers year-round in the SND Provincial Center Gallery. Her duties are many, and include putting together baskets to be sold in the SND Chicken Barbecue & Boutique. “Many of the baskets I make contain fair-trade items.

I look at volunteering as something that is enriching me. I love it,” says the mother of five and grandmother of 13.

Traveling all the way from Raleigh, North Carolina is Robert Bothwell, nephew of Sr. Mary de Angelis Bothwell. For the past 20 years, he has made the journey to Chardon, Ohio to volunteer on one of the two

last Sundays in September. Arriving by 10 a.m., Bob tirelessly works wherever he is assigned until the last chicken or rib dinner is served.

“It is fun. I am primarily a beverage runner during the day, but I do whatever is needed – testing Walkie Talkies, moving big urns of coffee, cutting pies, replenishing the paper towels in the restroom. I learned early on through my Catholic education that you never say no to a Sister,” he says with a laugh.

The kind gentleman attends the second SND Chicken Barbecue & Boutique Sunday each year as a type of annual family reunion.

“This time I come to eat with my family.

Most years there are 10 to 15 of us. Some years we have had as many as 25 family members enjoying the food and catching up on activities among kids and grandkids,” he adds. Bob is also glad to spend time visiting with his aunt,

Sr. Mary De Angelis, 98, currently the oldest Sister residing at the Chardon Provincial Center.

“I have really enjoyed volunteering at this annual event. The Sisters make you feel welcome and thank you for your time. I feel compelled to help them any way I can,” he reiterates.

“Robert Bothwell is a phenomenal, generous man,” exclaims Sr. Margaret Gorman, Provincial Superior for the Sisters of Notre Dame. “We owe all of our volunteers through the years a debt of gratitude.

Notre Dame Global Missions Supports Fair Trade!

Often the term “Free Trade” appears in the media, but rarely the term “Fair Trade.” We thought it might be helpful to provide some background on what is meant by “Fair Trade” and why it is so important to support Fair Trade with our purchasing dollars.

As Sisters of Notre Dame, we try to address not only the immediate needs of those who live in poverty and on the margins, but also the root causes that create such suffering. Fair Trade is a way to change unjust structures.

Equal Exchange, founder of the U.S. Fair Trade coffee movement, has recognized the Sisters of Notre Dame as one of its best promoters of Fair Trade. We offer Equal Exchange products in the Notre Dame Education Center gift shop (The Gallery) and in the Mission Advancement Office.

What Is Fair Trade?

Fair Trade is a system of exchange that honors producers, communities, consumers, and the environment.

It is a partnership between North American marketers and producers in the Global South which enables marginalized producers to gain access to developed markets.

Why Buy Fair Trade?

Buying Fair Trade means supporting decent wages for low-income producers in the Global South (Africa, Asia, Latin America), as well as protecting the environment, since most fairly traded food is grown organically. Fair Trade companies form partnerships with small businesses and democratically-run cooperatives that invest their profits in community development projects like health clinics, childcare, nutrition, housing, and education. Without Fair Trade partnerships, these vital projects would lack funding. continued on page 12

What kinds of goods are fairly traded?

The first Fair Trade product in the U.S. was coffee; now, more and more products are becoming available.

Notre Dame Global Missions currently makes the following Fair Trade products available: coffee, tea, hot cocoa, baking cocoa, olive oil, nuts, and many kinds of chocolate bars.

What Can We Do To Promote Fair Trade?

1. Educate ourselves and others. Begin with this website: www.equalexchangecoop.org 2. Consider buying Fair Trade Christmas gifts and other gifts from Equal Exchange, or from Notre Dame Global Missions. Perhaps, we might tithe what we spend for Christmas, spending 10% on Fair Trade.

3. Patronize coffee shops that regularly serve Fair Trade coffee, e.g., Dunkin Donuts, Phoenix, Dewey’s.

INTERNATIONAL Visitors This past summer, Notre Dame Global Missions welcomed visiting Sisters from India, Africa, and Nicaragua. Sister Supriya, from India, spent several months in Chardon learning how to keep archive records. She has now returned to the SND Generalate in Rome to share what she has learned. Sister Doctor Ajaya, also from India, will visit Chardon in mid-October, for a reunion with other Golden Jubilarians. Sr. Dr. Ajaya obtained her undergraduate degree at Notre Dame College, South Euclid, before going to Rome to study medicine. For many years Sr. Dr. Ajaya has been a medical doctor at the Notre Dame Health Care Clinic in Jamalpur, India, where as many as 300 poverty-stricken patients are treated daily.

Ladies Night Out November 1, 2013 at The Jake at Pizzazz, located at 20680 N. Park Blvd., University Heights, OH. The cost will be $15 which covers food, soft drinks and gratuity.

Reservations must be made by October 15, 2013.

Missionary Sisters from our Chardon Province were home in July to celebrate special Jubilees. Sr. Annete Adams, a Golden Jubilarian serving in Africa, is currently the co-director of formation for many young African women who have joined the Sisters of Notre Dame. Young African Sisters are now educating thousands of children, including members of the Maasai tribe and children orphaned as a result of the AIDS epidemic. Sisters Roseanna Mellert and Charlotte Hobelman were also home from Nicaragua this summer to celebrate their jubilees. They have now returned to Nicaragua to train religion teachers, to teach English and sewing classes, and to promote reforestation projects. Sr. Dolores Mikula, who was also home this summer, continues to do youth ministry and to develop the “Biblioburro” mobile library for the mountain missions of Jinotega, Nicaragua.
