SND USA MISSION STATEMENT

A Catholic congregation of women religious, the Sisters of Notre Dame of the United States are united in one heart, one hope, and one mission to proclaim God’s goodness and compassionate love for people of all faiths and cultures through a variety of ministries, both national and international, particularly serving those who are poor and marginalized. Sisters of Notre Dame of the United States Regional Office 1776 Hendrix Ave. Thousand Oaks, CA 91360 805-917-3714 | infoca@sndusa.org | www.sndusa.org Cover photo: Forest near Coesfeld, Germany, birthplace of the Sisters of Notre Dame.

We plant the seeds of the trees under whose shade we will never sit.

Dear Friends,

This adage is truly a meditation about those we are showcasing in this 2021 Impact Report for the California Region of the Sisters of Notre Dame! These words represent a selfless generosity, a belief in the future and all that we hope for generations yet to come. Each of us benefits everyday from those who have exercised great magnanimity over the years—educators, medical researchers, pastoral ministers, and especially donors to worthy causes.

As Sisters of Notre Dame, we are called to reveal God’s goodness and provident care. These pages chronicle the many ways in which our ministries make those words real. The SNDs came to California 98 years ago, and the pioneers’ seeds grew into woodlands across the globe. Appreciating their legacy and all that it has become, we find respite in the shade.

And so it is with profound gratitude that we thank and honor our donors of 2021 and celebrate some tributes and milestones. The seeds of faith and generosity which each of you plant, the saplings that you nurture, eventually provide a diverse landscape of hope. May each of you be blessed, knowing that you are providing refreshment for those in need—both today and in the years to come. Thank you for embracing our mission as we together plant the seeds of the trees under whose shade we will never sit.

Blessings always,

Our major donors, as our partners in mission, are acknowledged on this donor tree in the lobby of Notre Dame Center, adjacent to our chapel.

Milestones & Tributes

100 YEARS

The Sisters of Notre Dame in California congratulated St. Rose of Lima Parish, Simi Valley, on its 100-year anniversary in the summer. In addition to serving as catechists in the Religious Education program over the years, Sisters of Notre Dame opened St. Rose of Lima School in 1964. Sr. Kathleen Burns and Sr. Colette Theobald both claim St. Rose of Lima as their home parish.

Sr. Antoinette Marie Moon and Sr. Shawn Marie Doyle (front row) as well as Sr. Louise Marie Hlavac, Sr. Richardlyn Jones and Sr. Cristina Marie Buczkowski (back row) participated in the entrance procession at the centennial liturgy. This procession also acknowledged the 47 different countries represented within the parish.

When the 104th birthday of Sr. Francelia Klingshirn was acknowledged on Facebook in November, more than 2,000 readers liked, commented or shared the special message. Monica Garmon Kennedy, a former student wrote:

Sr. Francelia was my principal at Sacred Heart School in Saticoy. I graduated from there in 1994. Now, I think of her daily as I drop off my three young daughters for school. I’m sure Sr. Francelia would agree that their drop-off is much smoother than when my mother would drop me off. She often had to give me stickers to stop my crying and make my day better. So when I graduated from St. Bonaventure High School, Sr. Francelia was there to congratulate me, and of course, give me a sheet of stickers. She always remembered me for that!

On Sept. 12, Notre Dame Academy Elementary School celebrated its 75th anniversary. After several construction and zoning challenges, NDAE opened in 1946 with 33 students as the first communityowned school on the West coast. The SNDs and many lay colleagues have provided a Catholic environment of educational excellence for approximately 2,500 alumni. Sr. Julie Marie Arriaga, pictured here, was among the SNDs joining the festivities.

St. Dominic’s Parish in Eagle Rock celebrated its centennial, beginning with the grand opening of the community center on Sept. 12. Although the SNDs have ministered and lived at St. Dominic’s only since 2005, it is interesting that Reverend Mother Mary Cecilia Romen considered an invitation to staff the school in 1924. In this photo, Sr. Jane Marie McHugh (6th Grade teacher) and Sr. Joyanne Sullivan (Director of Catechetical Formation) are shown with the Pastor, Fr. Roberto Corral, O.P.

After a lingering illness, Sr. Bernadette Pendola passed away in December. When her obituary was posted online, the SNDs received testimonials, including memories from some of her former Ugandan students:

Sr. Bernadette brings memories of kindness that I cannot erase out of my mind. When she served as a nurse in sickbay at St. Julie’s School in Buseesa, Uganda, I was only in fourth grade and that’s 2005 if I recall well. I also remember that she tutored health science lessons. May God give you eternal rest. - Stuart Serugo

Thank You To Our Donors

We offer our profound gratitude to each individual and organization that made a donation during 2021! Every gift affirms your partnership with the SNDs in our lives of service as consecrated women religious. As an expression of our gratitude, we offer daily prayers for you and your loved ones—thank you for joining us in living and proclaiming the mission of Jesus Christ.

According to our Advancement Office records, an asterisk represents a donor whose first recorded gift was 25 or more years ago. Your loyalty is deeply appreciated!

Through the generosity of many donors, the Sisters of Notre Dame were able to open the A-level at Notre Dame Academy in 2019. This program is similar to a 2-year junior college education in the United States. Early in 2021, the first students took the Advanced level (A-level) Uganda National Exams, with these remarkable results:

• The highest student average score in the Kibaale District

• The best performing student in the district

• 25% of the students received government sponsorship to attend university

• 5 students ranked in the district’s top 10, and were the only girls

DECEMBER

PARTNERS IN HOPE

Through The Wolbring Legacy Society

With gratitude to Patricia Margaret Kennedy

The Sisters of Notre Dame offer their heartfelt gratitude to Pat Kennedy for her generous, unrestricted bequest. A former member of the congregation, Pat maintained her deep love for the spirit and mission of the community and her friendship with many of the sisters.

Pat became acquainted with the SNDs as a student at Notre Dame Academy High School in Los Angeles and upon her graduation, joined the community in 1965. Discerning that her call was to serve God as a lay person, Pat pursued her MBA at UCLA and was recruited into a successful career with IBM.

Her high school buddy, Sandy Hamers Pavick, remembers that Pat could brighten any day with her sharp Irish wit and humor. “She was a very caring and generous individual, and she brought a strong work ethic to public service in her local community. Pat was the kind of friend you could always count on, her thoughtfulness was priceless...”

Pat’s early retirement allowed her more time for her passions—friends, family, travel and winemaking. Ever the educator, she also found joy in teaching English as a Second Language at Our Lady of Refuge Parish in San Jose. Her students’ first languages were Spanish or Vietnamese, and at her celebration of life they shared their appreciation for her devotion and kindness.

Pat passed into eternity peacefully and unexpectedly in her San Jose home in July, 2018. Her Sisters of Notre Dame are committed to sharing her most cherished values with those entrusted to our care. Godspeed, dear friend!

Membership in the Wolbring Legacy Society is offered to those individuals who include the Sisters of Notre Dame in their estate plans. The only requirement is a written confirmation of the donor’s intent to make a planned gift. Membership may remain anonymous if the donor so chooses. We would be honored to welcome you into the Wolbring Legacy Society, giving us the chance to thank you personally. Please be assured of our prayerful good wishes, now and always.

NUN RUN 2022:

...hundreds on the way to heaven on foot!

With the involvement of so many friends, we raised more than $65,000 this year! All revenue from this event supports the SND Life & Ministry Fund, enabling the sisters to respond to the pressing needs of the times through spiritual, educational and social outreach. Thank you again and be assured of the prayerful good wishes of the SNDs around the world.

Thank you to our generous sponsors!
