Our Mission Celebrating God’s goodness and provident care, Notre Dame Elementary School educates children by nurturing dreams, excellence and success for transforming their lives and our world.
Our Vision Notre Dame Schools will engage students from preschool through high school in an exceptional Catholic education. We will focus on loving, respecting, and educating all to discover and develop their God-given talents. We will challenge our students to respond faithfully to Jesus’ call to transform the world by consciously doing good and bringing hope to the hearts of all.

Letter from the President Consciously doing good and bringing hope. These words from the vision statement of our Notre Dame Schools direct our efforts toward providing a transformative education with the understanding that our students are nurtured and grow into confident young adults who will go forth from this beautiful place to change the world. We do this by focusing on the educational vision and principles of the Sisters of Notre Dame and our core values: Justice, Respect, Integrity, Community and Excellence. Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in a gathering of the new educational leaders of the schools sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame throughout the country. The time affirmed for me the consistent vision which unites all of our schools – transformation. It was an inspiring time and one which continues to deepen my appreciation and humble respect for all that our Sisters have done to build, sustain, and make possible these wonderful schools for our students. As President, I know that what is accomplished on our campus is made possible by the confidence, support, and generosity of our families, alumni, and friends. I am tremendously grateful to be a part of this vibrant community where we celebrate our 60th anniversary this year.

In a world where there is such disparity, where conflicts persist, and where we yearn to hear God’s voice amidst a dizzying din of contradictory messages, I recognize the importance of our effort to ensure that students thrive. Through a faith-filled, loving environment we provide an excellent academic program and growth opportunities which prepare our children for success as they experience and engage the world with faith, hope, and moral courage. Q&A with NDS President Dr. Michael Bates It’s time to get to know Notre Dame Schools President Dr. Michael Bates a little better. Here, he graciously answers a few questions which give some insight into the administrator, teacher, and man our students respectfully address as, “Dr. Bates.”
Q. You have been engaged in Catholic education as a student, teacher and administrator since 1985. Why is a Catholic education important to you?
A. We thrive in a community where we know we are loved,
particularly when this love is beyond ourselves – God’s love. What differentiates a Catholic school from others is the awareness and daily acknowledgement that God loves us and is with each of us.
Q. Why do you feel a Catholic education is needed in today’s world? What does it offer a student?
A. By history and in the current moment, there is a selfishness
that draws us into conflict with one another. Through our Catholic education, we learn that God desires us to be more loving, generous and sacrificial for the greater good – a lesson particularly taught within our Sisters of Notre Dame schools. At NDCL and NDES, we understand that Catholic education is transformative. We see that our mission is to develop future leaders who will embrace a faithful and hopeful perspective which transforms the world.

Q. Why have you decided to move across the country from California to take this position at NDCL/NDES?
A. I believe that life has chapters, and I have been very
grateful for the many chapters I have experienced in Washington, DC, California, and now Ohio. I recognize this chapter holds opportunity for my children to be part of the thriving community that I serve.
Q. What do you hope to bring to NDCL/NDES? A. Enthusiasm. I have a great joy and celebrate learning,
education and student life. With inner drive and inspiration, I seek to learn with great colleagues who uplift the best in student learning and experience.
Q. Do you believe your personal values align with those of the Sisters of Notre Dame?
A. The Sisters of Notre Dame are Gospel witnesses. I believe
we are all called to be people of the resurrection – not just by what we say, but how we live. For children, that means waking each day and being a better version of ourselves, trying new things, meeting challenges. As educators with the Sisters of Notre Dame, we must focus on positivity and a recognition of our ability to make manifest God’s goodness.
Q. You are more than a teacher and administrator. You are also a husband and father who obviously values family. How do you feel these roles will serve our students and families within the NDES community?
A. As a parent and spouse, I engage in these roles with ultimate and daily humility. The vocation to be a parent is one I take seriously, gratefully and joyfully. For my wife and me, it is our primary call to care for, inspire and foster growth in our children. As career teachers, Nancy (a career high school science and religion teacher) and I also desire to extend a love and promotion of education. To be a parent in this modern world – with all the activities in which our children engage and all the demands of current life – we know that a healthy balance including family time, rest, prayer and community, is a priority, and the balance is what sustains us.
Q. While your time here has been brief, what qualities or aspects have impressed you at our Notre Dame Schools?
A. At Notre Dame Elementary School, I recognize how
important is a loving and caring environment for our children. From the moment one walks in the door at NDES, to the many moments of inspiration and dedication from our talented faculty and staff, it is clear that our students are nurtured. I am so grateful to be a part of such a wonderful team and to be collaborating with our principal, Mrs. Barb Doering, as we bring the NDES mission to life each day.

Letter from the Board Chair Dear Friends of NDES, The 2016-2017 school year was an important year for the Notre Dame Schools (NDS) Board of Directors. The NDS Board, formed in 2015, is responsible to govern and direct the president to work with faculty and staff to carry out the mission and vision of both NDCL and Notre Dame Elementary School. The most important responsibility of any board is the selection and hire of the president of the schools.

During the past year, the NDS Board hired Dr. Michael Bates who began his tenure as president of NDS on July 1, 2017. This year, we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Notre Dame Elementary School, the first Catholic school for boys and girls in Geauga County. From a modest beginning in a remodeled barn, NDES has evolved into a robust school that educates 575 students from preschool through eighth grade. Our strong enrollment and financial stability is possible because of the amazing community that generously supports and believes in our mission — the Sisters of Notre Dame, our parents, grandparents, teachers, alumni and friends of the school. Your time, energy and financial support are some of our greatest assets. Knowing this, we judiciously manage the school’s budget and your investment in us which now serves as a strong beginning for the transformation of our school. As a result, this past year, three classrooms have been updated with new furnishings to create flexible learning environments. Additionally, all students now enjoy our remodeled dining room, bathrooms and new computers in the computer lab. These small improvements are just the beginning. We strive to provide facilities that will enhance and support our strong academic program so that our students experience a truly transformative education. With a sound financial position and your continued support, we are poised to move to the next level. The Lion Leader program is a philanthropic partnership between Notre Dame Elementary School and its families. Participation in the program provides Lion Leaders with benefits, including special event attendance, advertising opportunities, and a tax-deductible gift to the NDES Fund. In return, NDES students reap the benefit of strong academic and extracurricular programs, upgraded technology, and improved facilities.

One-to-One Technology Initiative In 2015, Notre Dame Elementary School launched its first campaign, the One-to-One Initiative. The modest campaign secured $122,000 and successfully funded 144 Tablet PCs, powered storage carts, and budgeted repairs for the 2016-17 academic year. Thanks to the generosity of donors to the 1:1 Initiative, our junior high students enjoy a personal Tablet PC, which they utilize across the curriculum to acquire skills and knowledge in preparation for high school and beyond. Donor Spotlight: As local business owners, my family and I believe it’s so important to support the community in which you work and live. We are proud to contribute to a number of organizations throughout Geauga County, but we are particularly committed to Notre Dame Schools. My brothers, Bill and Gordon, and I attended both NDES and NDCL. We received an outstanding education that prepared us to excel in college and post-graduate study. Today, my children are experiencing the best of Catholic education at Notre Dame Elementary School – still rooted in the traditions of the Sisters of Notre Dame.
