|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Dear Friends, As the leaves of the trees across our Chardon campus change from green to radiant autumn colors, I think of the changes occurring within and around us, especially for the Sisters of Notre Dame in the United States. Next year, our four U.S. provinces (Thousand Oaks, CA; Covington, KY; Chardon, OH; and Toledo, OH) will come together as one new province under a single leadership team. This past July, 310 sisters met in Columbus to continue the process of becoming one, which began in 2011. The sessions were live-streamed, so that the sisters back at home could participate in the experience. We prayed together, and renewed the many friendships and collaborative relationships that have brought us closer together over the past eight years. We reflected on the qualities needed for leadership and membership in the new national province. We joyfully celebrated our province histories, aware that new chapters will be written by our community living and shared ministries. In this issue of NETWORK, you will learn how the four SND provinces continue to focus on ministering to those living on the margins of society. Our congregation’s first ministries were directed to groups marginalized by lack of access to education. As Sisters of Notre Dame today, we continue to serve the marginalized of our times, particularly vulnerable children, women and elderly. I am also excited to share with readers, for the first time, our 2018 SND Annual Report that includes the names of the many individuals who have generously supported us financially this past year. Your partnership continues to make our ministries possible. May God’s steady presence bless you in whatever changes you experience in your own lives. Gratefully,

MINISTRY This is the second in a three-part series examining the three ministry priorities of SND-USA. The other priorities are Sponsored Education/Health Care Ministries and Young Adult/Vocation Ministries. The four SND provinces of Chardon, OH; Toledo, OH; Covington, KY, and Thousand Oaks, CA will continue their local ministries. However, the addition of an SND-USA model for outreach brings renewed enthusiasm and collaboration to strengthen these three broad initiatives nationwide.

Sisters of Notre Dame, Thousand Oaks Province, demonstrate against human trafficking.

Whether working to end human trafficking across the United States, visiting women inmates in local prisons, lending a hand to the poor, or serving as a voice for the unborn and elderly at risk, the Sisters of Notre Dame continue to minister on the margins of society across the country as their four provinces become one next year. In the economic, political and social sense of the word, those on the “margins” are those relegated to an unimportant or insignificant place, a powerless place in society. They are often viewed as peripheral, outside of the mainstream and without influence. The Sisters of Notre Dame began their ministry of education in order to serve the marginalized of their time and place: poor children in the rural villages and towns of Germany, Catholic immigrant communities in the rapidly growing cities of the United States, girls and young women without access to education. Today in the United States, there are a variety of educational options and all children have access to public schools. While still committed to their historic

ministry of Catholic education, the Sisters of Notre Dame are continually drawn to serve people at the margins of society, finding new needs and new ways of reaching out. “It’s a new term for our basic mission to serve those who are poor in any way,” explains Sister Kathleen Ryan. Sister Joyce Bates of the Toledo province gives some examples. “Vulnerable children, women and the elderly are groups often found living on the margins of society,” she explains. “Ministry on the Margins includes SND global transformation initiatives and missions,” states Sister Kathleen. “The Sisters of Notre Dame are also very dedicated to protecting the environment. The abuse of the environment often comes at the greatest cost to the poor and marginalized.” Together Sisters Kathleen and Joyce are working to create the new national SND Office for Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation (JPIC), which will serve as a clearinghouse for a range of ministries to those on the margins. continued on page 4

EDUCATION, ADVOCACY, DIRECT SERVICE Ministry on the Margins involves three dimensions: education, advocacy and direct service. Educating others about social justice concerns includes developing a curriculum for Catholic schools, offering programs on emerging issues, speaking at book clubs or the local Rotary, organizing summer service experiences for young adults, forming social justice groups within parishes, and organizing events to raise awareness and funding for various social justice projects. “Several SNDs have written articles, books and blogs about social justice concerns,” adds Sister Kathleen. Advocacy means using our voices to speak up for those who are voiceless. It may involve writing to government leaders or working alongside other concerned citizens, lawyers, police and social workers to help people navigate our social system. Often, Sisters of Notre Dame will personally stand with the marginalized, whether in court or as they share their stories with others. Direct service runs the gamut from serving in a soup kitchen for those experiencing homelessness to teaching inner city children and those with learning disabilities. Because it involves personal relationships with those who are marginalized, direct service is the most meaningful aspect of many sisters’ vocations. Retirement from full-time ministry often gives sisters the opportunity to reach out to people in new ways, which is why sisters continue to serve well beyond retirement age. Tutoring, becoming a pen pal to the incarcerated, volunteering for social agencies, and spending time with callers to the prayer line are all ways sisters continue to live their call to service.

aspect of the four provinces’ leadership teams, boards, sponsored institutions, and collaboration with associates, coworkers, and partner organizations which share the same vision. It is at the core of our mission.”

SND-USA MINISTRY ON THE MARGINS: HUMAN TRAFFICKING One example of an SND-USA Ministry on the Margins is human trafficking. The commitment grew naturally out of the sisters’ historic commitment to women and children. All four SND provinces are active in working against human trafficking through education, advocacy and direct service. Ohio ranks #2 across the entire U.S. for incidences of human trafficking. “Toledo ranks high since we are at a crossroads of highways going north/south and east/ west, as well as being on the shore of Lake Erie,” says Sister Joyce. “It mostly involves young women for sex trade. We have several sisters working with Rahab’s Heart in Toledo, which offers ministry to the women on the streets. This includes driving around the streets with supplies in the trunk of the car to give to women they encounter.” Rahab’s Heart provides suppers at their house for the women, and also offers a compassionate ear. The director of Rahab’s Heart is a recovered prostitute who can identify with these women.

The Toledo Province also supports S.T.O.P. -- Stop Trafficking of Persons. “This is a small committee of sisters from the four religious orders in the Toledo Diocese who have motherhouses in the diocese,” Sister Joyce states. “S.T.O.P. provides workshops and education on the topic. Toledo also has a Coalition to End Human Trafficking. in need of compassion and love. Our desire is to show them the love of Jesus by listening, offering a bit of help, and being available.” Like Toledo, northeast Ohio also has a Coalition to End Human Trafficking, comprised of Sisters of Notre Dame, Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine, Dominican Sisters of Peace, Sisters of the Humility of Mary, Sisters of the Incarnate Word, Congregation of St. Joseph and Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland who have joined with other professional colleagues to address the complexities of this human rights crisis. The Collaborative to End Human Trafficking is now leading the effort to unite educators, medical personnel, elected officials and lawmakers, law enforcement, social services providers, advocacy and empowerment groups, judges, therapists, hospitality and transportation providers, and researchers in greater Cleveland and northeast Ohio.

In Cleveland, Project Red Cord is just one restorative program to help sexual assault victims and other marginalized persons who face many adverse challenges such as physical and emotional abuse, poverty and addiction. “Our goal is to empower individuals to advocate for themselves and improve their quality of life through personal, social, and professional development,” explains Sister Cecilia Liberatore, Chardon Province, a volunteer with Project Red Cord. “This population is also hard hit by the opioid epidemic.” Sister Cecilia explains, “We are here to show victims of human trafficking, drug addiction and the homeless that they are loved. We are all just the same – people

Sister Rita Geoppinger coordinates similar efforts in the Covington Province. “We are actively involved in curbing trafficking in the Greater Cincinnati area. I helped train police officers in how to differentiate between trafficking victims and criminals, and how to respond supportively and helpfully. Interstate 75 runs straight through Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio. Consequently, our area has been identified as one of the main trafficking corridors in the country. We actively recruit Associates to participate in our local JPIC activities and work with them in the areas of human trafficking, immigration, and the care of the earth.” As in the other SND provinces, human trafficking is prevalent in the Los Angeles area. “With the Los Angeles International Airport as well as nearby international Long Beach Harbor, trafficked persons

are able to be easily transported anywhere in the world,” describes Sister Betty Mae Bienlein, Thousand Oaks Province. “Our proximity to the U.S. and Mexico border is a trap for many persons who are promised jobs, protection and education. Unknowingly, they end up being exploited by traffickers when these refugees are only seeking a better and safer place to live and work.”

She says the Thousand Oaks Province has worked on various projects pertaining to this issue. “We started with letters to the managers of motels/hotels in the Oxnard area, followed by visits to them giving them materials about human trafficking and offering education to their staff,” says Sister Betty Mae. “Many managers were happy to receive us.” “We then put labels giving the crisis phone number on 4,000 bars of soap placed in motel/hotel rooms,” Sister Betty Mae continues. “These were used during the Super Bowl when many fans came to the game. For the past few months, we have been working on a curriculum to be presented to high schools to educate students, faculty, and parents about human trafficking.” Other Sisters of Notre Dame from the Thousand Oaks Province serve on various committees and speak to groups throughout the city. Collaboration with the organization CAST, Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking, has enabled sisters to serve as volunteers at a “safe house” and as members of CAST’s non-profit board of directors. In addition, Sister Judeen Julier, a chaplain at California Hospital in downtown Los Angeles, connected members of the emergency room team with CAST so that all emergency room personnel would be trained in recognizing the signs of human trafficking in their patients. continued on page 8

CONCLUSION Sister Betty Mae says, “‘Ministries on the Margins’ means contact with and ministry with those who are least among us. These include, but are not limited to, the homeless, the hungry, the jobless, the sick, those in health care centers, those separated from family and support, those alienated through health issues, the handicapped, those who experience family crises such as children on drugs, runaways, gang members, and dropouts as well as those living with abortion trauma and those in detention centers such as refugees and immigrants,” she describes. “As Sisters of Notre Dame, we are called to reach out to those on the edge or margins,” Sister Frances Marie Penwell, SND, Toledo, exclaims. “We empower one another in our sharing with others who need the love and care of Jesus in their lives. Jesus didn’t sit around waiting for those to come to him but went out looking for those in need. So, when I go out during the afternoon, when I am free to pick up food and deliver it to those in need, I reach out in the name of the Sisters of Notre Dame.”

Sister Kathleen concurs and adds, “Many Sisters of Notre Dame are engaged in empowering SND Associates and other lay people who are interested in working with the marginalized. Many people want to participate in a specific Ministry on the Margins but need to know the “who, where and what” they can do. I offer a presentation on what many of the Sisters of Notre Dame are doing to help the marginalized. Our Ministry on the Margins Committee sent out a survey to our Associates asking where their personal interests rest. 6 Ways to Benefit from a Year-End Gift The final months of the year are traditionally considered the season of giving. In addition to the gifts we give to the important people in our lives, this season of generosity is also the prime time to show support for the causes we love. When you support the Sisters of Notre Dame this year, not only will others benefit, but so will you. Although there may still be time to make several different types of charitable gifts, based on your unique situation and tax considerations, some gift types may be more practical than others. Following are several popular options.

1. Make an immediate impact.

Cash is an easy way to give each year. You can receive an income tax charitable deduction for the full value of the gift. If you write a check for less than $250, a copy of the check will suffice as a record of the gift. You should obtain a receipt for gifts of $250 or more.

When you donate stocks to the Sisters of Notre Dame that are worth more than what you originally paid for them, you can claim deductions for their full fair market value and eliminate any tax on the appreciation.

Gifts such as a charitable remainder trust or a charitable gift annuity provide you, or a beneficiary of your choice, with payments for life or a period of years, and the Sisters of Notre Dame with support thereafter. If you use appreciated securities to fund the gift, you will be entitled to an income tax deduction based, in part, on the charitable portion of the securities’ full value, in addition to eliminating upfront capital gains tax.

Like securities, if you try to sell appreciated property, you will be subject to capital gains tax on the appreciation. By donating the property to charity, you can enjoy tax savings and relieve yourself from the hassles of selling or maintaining it.

An old policy you no longer need can make a big impact on our work. To qualify as a deductible gift, the Sisters of Notre Dame must become the policy owner. For most types of insurance policies, your tax deduction is usually the cost basis or the fair market value of the policy – whichever is less. It is more common for policies to still require premiums to be paid. When you donate these, the future premiums are taxdeductible as you pay them.

6. Repurpose special personal items.

Perhaps you have tangible items, such as artwork or other collectibles, that you would like to give to the Sisters of Notre Dame to support our ministries. Please contact us so that we can help you determine the charitable deductions for your personal property gift.

A Lasting Tribute SISTER MARY PATRICIA

(formerly Sister Mary John Therese) Born Patricia Ann PASEK on June 5, 1930 Entered into religious life, August 16, 1951 Entered into eternal life, June 2, 2019 Patricia and her two younger brothers, children of Charles and Florence (Freibott) Pasek, treasured their family. Faith and trust were nurtured by their parents’ devotion to Our Lady. Patricia entered Notre Dame Academy in 1944 and became a postulant on September 8, 1948. At investment, she received the name Sister Mary John Therese. Later, she returned to her baptismal name, Patricia. Sister Mary Patricia earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry from Notre Dame College, South Euclid, OH and a Master of Science Degree from the Catholic University

of America, Washington, DC. Her ministry in education spanned more than 25 years. She was an excellent teacher, eager to impart her love and respect of the sciences, especially chemistry and physics. For 14 years, sometimes concurrent with teaching assignments, Sister guided young women in all stages of formation. Sister Mary Patricia transitioned into a third area of ministry serving her sisters in community. For several years she assisted at the Generalate in Rome. In Chardon, she coordinated activities for sisters residing in the Health Care Center, was curator of the province Heritage Room, and worked in the Advancement Office. Recently, she was best known for her ministry as community photographer. Sister loved nature, enjoyed being outdoors, was a master gardener and a gifted member of the choir.

SISTER MARY MARGARET

(formerly Sister Mary Nathan) Born Margaret Lucile HESS on May 25, 1928 Entered into religious life, August 16, 1949 Entered into eternal life, August 9, 2019 Margaret was the third of the four girls and one boy born to Eugene and Nina (Weston) Hess. After completing elementary grades at St. Clement School, Lakewood, Margaret attended St. Stephen High School in Cleveland where she realized that God was calling her to religious life. After graduation in 1946, Margaret entered the Sisters of Notre Dame and at investment received the name Sister Mary Nathan. Later, she returned to her baptismal name. Sister Margaret received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Notre Dame College, South Euclid, OH and a Master’s Degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. For 15 years her ministry in education centered on teaching business courses to high school students. Sister recognized the importance of gaining business skills for future employment and for life. 32

In 1965, Sister Margaret was asked to assist in the community office and learn the duties of treasurer. This led to her appointment as Treasurer for the Chardon Province – a ministry she held for 35 years. She worked tirelessly to assure a solid future for the sisters and for all the Notre Dame schools. Highly respected for her business acumen, she served as consultant and trustee for both local and national organizations. She loved organizing the annual Barbecue and Boutique. After a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease in 1999, Sister Margaret assumed the role of financial and legal consultant, and maintained a strong interest in whatever was being built, renovated, bought, sold or invested. She was sister, educator, mentor, treasurer, faithful friend and financial wizard, but once remarked, “You could say less about my financial work and more about relationships to the community and interactions with people. That was the most important part of my life—not what I did or what positions I held. I treasure that more than ‘treasurer’.”

Annual Regina Alumnae Retreat

Monica Rose Schneeberger is the daughter of Aileen O’Brien Schneeberger’79. Monica will be graduating this year from Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School and plans to go to nursing school and specialize in NICU. Besides being an over 4.0 student, she is also a football trainer, plays Lacrosse and is a student ambassador. She hopes to be able to study abroad for a semester in college and take part in a mission trip to a third world country when she graduates from college.

Madyson Claire Treharne is the daughter of Caralyn Hayward Treharne’89. Madyson is a junior at Beaumont School for Girls. Maddy has an over 4.0 average in school and is on the track team specializing in pole vaulting. She placed 9th in the country this year in pole vaulting and is training for the 2024 Olympics! Maddy is planning on becoming a writer and hopes to work for Disney when her Olympic days are over!

ince their arrival in Cleveland in 1874 to serve German Catholic immigrants, the Sisters of notre Dame (SnD) have given their time, skills, and compassion to the people of northern Ohio and beyond. Beginning as teachers in classrooms from preschool through university, they have brought God’s goodness and care to people in parishes and hospitals, prisons and the streets, as they walk with people who are in need. Members of an international congregation, the sisters responded to the missionary call to serve in California, Virginia, north Carolina, and Florida and in india, uganda, nicaragua, and the Philippines. as the Cleveland notre Dame community prepares to reunite in 2020 with notre Dame in Toledo, Covington, and Southern California, they look back in gratitude and forward in hope. Eileen Quinlan, SnD, has been a Sister of notre Dame since 1973, teaching secondary and college English for over 40 years. She earned her doctorate from loyola university Chicago and is a professor emerita at notre Dame College. Drawing on the archives of the Sisters of notre Dame, the Diocese of Cleveland, and schools and parishes where the sisters have been in ministry, Sister Eileen and Sister Elizabeth Wood, archivist, have assembled a visual story of nearly 150 years of joyful Gospel-based ministry. “With SND-USA approaching in 2020, my goals were to create a time capsule of Christ the King Province, a family album for us and for our families, alumni(ae), associates, parishioners, colleagues, and friends to remember who we have been and how we got to 2020,” explains Sister Eileen. “For the sisters in the three other US provinces, it can be a quick visual introduction to Chardon and its backstory, some of the people and places that have shaped us, and how our stories have intertwined before and after 1924, when the single U.S. province was divided.”
