A LETTER FROM THE PROVINCIAL SUPERIOR

Dear Friends, Fall is in the air, and once again we celebrate the change of seasons that makes life in northeast Ohio so beautiful. The seasons are a recurring cycle but the world is continuously evolving, and with change comes disruption, uncertainty, and a new perspective. The Sisters of Notre Dame embrace change as an ongoing experience of God’s love and providence. We find that change challenges us to find new ways to carry out our mission, to help people experience that God – and themselves as persons cherished by God, and life itself – are good.

The Sisters of Notre Dame in the United States are facing many changes. This past summer more than 400 sisters from the four U.S. provinces gathered for three days in Columbus, Ohio to lay the groundwork for a shared future. The four provinces of Chardon, Toledo, Covington KY and Los Angeles will become one United States province by 2020. Sisters met in small groups representing all four regions of the country to answer the question, “What can we be and do together that we cannot be and do separately?” As the energy of new relationships built over the three days, a national vision began to emerge. Our first National Education Summit, featured

later in this issue, is one example of a new way of thinking about the impact of our ministries, national in scope and sustained by partnerships. Although there are many questions still to be answered before 2020, our felt sense of “one heart, one hope, one mission” is deeper and stronger.

In this issue, you will read about how our Sisters continue to help students in our schools experience the joys of service, while forming new relationships with Sisters and with each other. The Summer Service Experience is a recent addition to our traditional ministry of education. You will also see first-hand how our Sisters meet the growing needs of our aging population in ministries of pastoral care and spiritual support.

It is a rapidly changing world but one where people still value signs of God’s presence.

We find we are more thankful than ever for your continued friendship and support.

May you experience the constancy of God’s love throughout all the changes in your life!

SND SUMMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE

CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS REACH OUT TO THOSE IN NEED AND LEARN A VALUABLE LIFE LESSON ABOUT SERVICE

Whether it was preparing and serving lunch to the poor and homeless at Bishop Cosgrove Center, playing with and reading stories to toddlers at Blessing House, sorting clothes and socializing with the homeless at West Side Catholic Center, or tutoring immigrants in English at the Office of Migration and Refugee Services, high school students who participated in the Sisters of Notre Dame Summer Service Experience learned a lesson they will remember for the rest of their lives. The students learned sometimes it’s the little things that mean the most: a bar of soap, a new pair of underwear, or a can of soup.

Amanda Hennessey, a junior at Clearwater Central Catholic High School in Clearwater, Florida, says participating in the SND Summer Service Experience was a real eye-opening experience. “We know there is poverty and homelessness, but we really don’t see it where I live in Florida. Through this program, I want to help more in my community. I am also more willing to do things on my own to help others,”

Emma Plumley, a junior at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School in Munson Township, agrees, “I always wanted to get involved in helping the poor. I live in Old Brooklyn on Cleveland’s near west side, and I see poverty in my neighborhood. This service experience is a good start for me. Prior to this, I did not know how I could help. I also want to do more on my own to help.”

This was the fourth year that Marilou McClimans, theology and history teacher at St. John School in Ashtabula, served as a chaperone for the Summer Service Experience.

“I have taught at Catholic schools for 35 years,” states the passionate, dedicated teacher. “I believe an important component of a Catholic education is teaching our students to give back. You cannot teach that in a textbook. It’s also more than giving a donation in a box. The SND Summer Service Experience is about giving of your time and talents and being Jesus to others.”

The Sisters of Notre Dame launched the Summer Service Experience 10 years ago. High schools participating this year included St. John School, NDCL, Cleveland Central Catholic, and Clearwater Central Catholic.

Six students from each school were invited to participate; 19 students spent four days and three nights (four nights for the Clearwater, Sisters of Notre Dame | Network

Florida group) at the St. Leonard’s Youth Retreat Center where they were introduced to each other, heard an explanation of the four service sites groups would visit, engaged in day-long service activities, and participated in fun games, activities and prayer from Sunday, June 14 through Wednesday, June 17. SND Sisters Lisa Novak, Lisette Petelin, Nicole Varnerin, Pat Griesmar, and Maryann Cirino combined their talents, energy and passion to make the 10th anniversary year of Summer Service Experience outstanding once again. An original team member, Leslie Dickens Bukovsky, did many necessary behind the scene preparations as well.

“Each day concluded with a time where students could share what they had experienced and learned,” says Sister Lisa Novak, SND, Mission Effectiveness Coordinator. She recalls how this program began, “I met with our community schools administrators and knew I could not visit every school as Mission Effectiveness Coordinator. I wanted to teach students about the history, mission and charism of the Sisters of Notre Dame. We decided to develop a program based on service, a student friendly charism experience, and invite high school students to participate. The big trick was finding locations where students could provide all-day services. This year, we visited Blessing House, Bishop Cosgrove Center, West Side Catholic Center and the Office of Migration and Refugee Services. Students served at three of the four locations.”

Sister Lisa continues, “We mix students from each school in service groups. Central Catholic High School provides a bus and van and NDCL provides a van for transporting groups to and from the retreat center to these four destinations. Each day students work at a new place – each connected in some way to the mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame. We want students to know they are connected with us and a part of our story. The Sisters of Notre Dame have been consistent with our mission of witnessing God’s goodness and provident care. We hope the take away is that students realize there is a relationship developed with the Sisters of Notre Dame that nurtures their own spirit. The Sisters of Notre Dame let God’s goodness and provident care flow through us, and students can see God’s goodness in their own lives. They can pay it forward.”

can share what they have,” Sister Lisa describes. “We are cultivating seeds that have already been planted at home and in their schools that service is a part of life.”

Daysha Taylor, a junior at Cleveland Central Catholic, participated in the service program because she wanted to help others. “I catch a bus to school at E. 123rd Street and Superior and drive through poverty. I see homeless people sleeping on sidewalks and across heating grates,” she describes shaking her head. “Yesterday, I went to Blessing House. I listened as a fouryear-old girl talked to me about her mother. Later I was told that girl never talks. It made me happy to know I can impact someone else’s life. It impacted me. I am glad I can be a role model for younger children.”

Nicole Evans, Program Director at the Bishop William M. Cosgrove Center, says she appreciates the help and welcomes high school students from the SND Summer Service Experience.

Ronnie Nejbauer, a sophomore at St. John High School, says the SND Summer Service Experience was fun.

“I enjoy meeting new people. I see people who need help, and it makes me feel good to help. I plan to continue being a servant of God.”

Another gentleman, Earl Burton, lost his job in May after a company did not renew his contract. He exclaims, “I appreciate the Cosgrove Center being here. So many people are laid off, are not working and have needs.

We want to work. We get dignity in working. Allowing me to have something to eat sometimes fills the gap. I’m just trying to survive.”

Sister Lisette describes, “I am inspired by the fact that these young people put four days aside in their busy summers to serve others. I feel the impact of this experience will not be lost when they leave here. Many of these young people are from privileged homes and have not been exposed to poverty. I believe they are inspired to carry on service in their lives.”

Sister Pat concurs, “These are young people who are inspired to see what adults are doing to reach out to the poor. I choose to come back every year because I call this ‘my shot in the arm, my renewal of hope.’ When I see children willing to take on the mission of Jesus, I just love it. It is a privilege to be here and see what happens. It is the hope for the future.”

important it is to expose students to social justice issues and service.

Part of our ministry is to be a place where social justice issues come to the forefront. The people who come here need food, shelter and advocacy.

This hands-on work appeals to young people where they can actually hand the poor a plate of food or find a size 14 pair of pants for a man. Many people do not have an understanding of people who do not have. They are afraid. They do not know if people here are more violent. Often they have mental health issues they are not exposed to, so by exposing students at an early age to this community, they will carry that knowledge and make a difference. We are all in this together. We are all responsible to help one another. Hopefully, it is a life lesson learned.”

The students who visited the West Side Catholic Center were able to hear Ken Davis, known to many as the “Dog Man” because he lived in the streets as a homeless person with the dogs for many years. He shares his testimony. “I lived on the streets for 27 years,” describes Mr. Davis. “I have been at West Side Catholic Center eight years talking about life on the streets. I call this place ‘Welcome to Reality’ because many people who come here are from broken homes and have no mom or dad. These people are a mirror for me. They are alcoholics, drug addicts...When you see someone sleeping on a sidewalk, know that is a human being. It could happen to you.

He continues, “I thought homelessness was my destiny. Stay focused. Lighten other people’s loads. Lend them your ear. Listen to them. I don’t care if they smell good or bad. Don’t take for granted the love of your mom and dad. When love don’t live here, game over. Pray it up. Keep it real.”

Celebrating the 10th anniversary is a milestone for a program that seemed liked another way for our youth to serve in the community. It has shown that it is so much more. It envelops the heart, the hands and the spirit of our youth to provide a loving and caring interaction with those in our community who are in need. Sr. Lisa shares with us a few words from a thank you note she received from Joseph House (Joseph House is a nonprofit that seeks to help refugees resettling in Cleveland). “We wanted to tell you how very grateful we are to have received a group of volunteers

from Sisters of Notre Dame Summer Service Experience Program. We were completely blown away, not only by their hard work and the huge amount of help they were, but by their kindness and energy. All of us here at Joseph House are so thankful and so blessed to have met your volunteers.”

While many recognize their outstanding role in educating generations, the Sisters of Notre Dame are actively involved in many other areas of ministry, including medical professions throughout northeast Ohio and the world. As nurses, music therapists, restorative therapists, associate chaplains and pastoral care professionals, these women religious are able to share the love and compassion of Jesus with the sick, injured, emotionally distraught and dying in our midst.

Ministering to the

Mind & Body

Music Therapy Sister Angela Salazar, SND, is passionate about her role in ministering to the mind and body through music therapy.

The idea of music as a healing influence which affects health and behavior is as old as the writings of Aristotle and Plato.

The 20th Century discipline of music therapy took flight after World War I and World War II when musicians visited veteran’s hospitals to play for those suffering both physical and emotional trauma after the wars.

“I love being a musical therapist,” exclaims Sister Angela with a smile. “I work primarily with hospice patients in their homes and at hospice and nursing care facilities. It is a privilege to be with people during their final days.”

Sister Angela earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music at the University of New Mexico. “I knew very little about music therapy at that time. I fell into this field at the suggestion of the Sisters of Notre Dame, who knew my love of music.” Sr. Angela is in her last year in formation and will be taking final vows in 2016.

The board-certified musical therapist formerly taught Suzuki violin to private students at a Montessori school before teaching at Julie Billiart School. She says research in music therapy supports its effectiveness in a wide array of healthcare and education settings. Music therapists assess emotional well-being, physical health, social functioning, communication abilities, and cognitive skills through music.

While music therapy can accomplish individualized goals, Sister Angela describes, “As a music therapist for hospice patients, I provide comfort care. I also work with a lot of dementia patients. Oftentimes, despite being primarily unresponsive, 6

when I visit and begin to sing, many of my patients will recall the words to old-time favorite songs and sing along.

I feel I am able to touch their spirit.

Many request period music from their youth. However, during their final days, they often ask me to sing and play more spiritual music.”

Sister Angela continues, “During my initial assessment with a patient, I will ask what kind of music they like; their history; and if they played an instrument or sang in a choir. Typically, I present instruments to them. They usually prefer I sing and play guitar.”

She says all kinds of music can be useful in effecting change in a patient’s life and that a patient does not have to have some music ability to benefit from music therapy. “Music is used with elderly persons to increase or maintain their level of physical, mental and social/emotional functioning.”

Sister Angela laughs, recalling, “Some of my patients have commented, ‘I have a singing nun’ or ‘I have a singing angel that visits me.’ I try to involve the entire family, particularly if the patient is non-responsive. I remember playing a song for one patient near his final

day, and his wife began crying. She held her husband’s hand at the bedside and explained that this was their wedding song. Many family members have told me music helps them as well. I don’t see my hospice patients as sick; for a short time, they can be a person and not a disease. I am not coming in with a bunch of machines and needles. I come to visit with a smile and a song.”

Sister Louray explains that physical therapy remediates impairments and promotes mobility, function and quality of life. On this day, she engages about 15 Sisters in a series of therapeutic exercises from neck rolls, leg lifts and arm stretches to recreational play with balloons. She enjoys a captive, lively audience as the Sisters bat balloons back and forth to their partner.

“I became a Sister of Notre Dame in 1966 to be of service for others and will celebrate my Jubilee in 2019. As a Sister, I worked in education for 25 years, mostly in the city. From there, I worked as a community secretary for the Vincentian Sisters of Charity, followed by heading medical accounts office for my Sisters of Notre Dame. After ten years, I wanted to do something that was not behind a desk again. I wanted to be out there with people.”

The dedicated Sister of Notre Dame feels fortunate to work in healthcare as an associate chaplain. Mercy Hospital employs four, full-time chaplains of different faith traditions. In addition, the hospital has on-call community clergy, local priests who come regularly for the sacrament of anointing, and on-call priests to handle emergencies through the night. The hospital is committed to caring for all people, all faiths, says Sister Alex. As an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, Sr. Alex provides spiritual and emotional support for patients, families, and staff, responding to those person in greatest spiritual crisis: illness, suffering, loss and death. She also participates in Rounds, and ethics consults when necessary.

Associate Chaplain Similar sentiments are shared by Sister Alex Justavich, SND, Associate Chaplain at Mercy Hospital in Lorain County.

Mercy is a full-service, not- for-profit, integrated healthcare system, which has been providing quality health care in Lorain County and surrounding communities for more than 100 years.

“At times, patients are converted; other times they are not interested in seeing me. That’s alright. The invitation is always there. Ninety percent of my work occurs on patient floors or in the Emergency Department. When I carry the pager, I am typically being called to the trauma room, ER, or for a Code Blue. Another aspect of my job involves educating patients and their families on advanced directives.”

“As a chaplain, I extend the healing ministry of Jesus. I am here for whatever the situation calls for. I am here as a support – with my heart, with my ears, with my eyes,” describes Sister Alex. “While the other three clergy can give their bread and wine, I can offer the Eucharist and bless them.

Many times, the patient’s family and friends are so distraught that they want to know their loved one is prepared for the afterlife. My presence comforts them and provides a calming effect.”

She admits, “There are pictures in my mind that will never go away. Due to patient confidentiality, I cannot share these times, but journaling helps me.

When asked, ‘How was your day?’ I often retort, ‘Life, death and everything in between.’ My job as a healthcare chaplain is very rewarding. I am there for the whole person, including their spiritual needs, while the physician treats the patient’s medical concerns and the psychiatrist deals with their mental issues. At each visit, there really is a gift exchanged. This is a very depressed area of the state with high suicide and overdose rates. It makes me realize how much I take for granted – my family, my health, my community, my faith.”

Sister Alex describes, “Sometimes I pray and other times I invite them to join me in prayer. I want to lift their self-worth, self-confidence and let them know the God that created them loves them.” www.sndchardon.org

Director of Pastoral Care

- Sister Kendra Bottoms, SND

Sister Kendra Bottoms, SND, Director of Pastoral Care at St. John Medical Center in Westlake, taught in the classroom for 31 years before making a dramatic career switch into the healthcare field. Still, the compassionate Sister sees similarities more than differences in her work.

“When I was 14 years old, my brother was born. Shortly after September 11, 2001, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. Within three months, he was dead,” Sister Kendra painfully recalls. “I was devastated. It shook me. I was crying out to God asking Him what He wanted me to do. Around that time, an African priest suggested I consider Clinical Pastoral Education.”

“Whether you are in education or healthcare, you are doing for people,” Sister Kendra considers. “Both fields are about working with people. When I was teaching in high schools, I didn’t like being around hospitals, sick people or dying people, but God moved me.

Much later, when I was working at St. Vincent Charity in pursuit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)/ pastoral care training, one of my jobs was to visit people receiving chemotherapy. In a strange way, it tied me to my brother.”

Sister Kendra made her profession in 1969 and will celebrate her Jubilee in 2019. She earned a BS degree in Biology from Notre Dame College, a MA in Biology from Kent State University, and taught at Notre Dame Academy, Chardon, OH; Notre Dame Academy, Virginia; Regina High School in South Euclid, and Notre DameCathedral Latin School in Chardon.

“I loved working at Regina because it gave me an opportunity to work with black students,” she remembers. At the time, Sister Kendra was the only black Sister of Notre Dame in the province.

Today, she says she is happy to be working in healthcare, which affords her the opportunity to work with Sisters of Notre Dame | Network

patients, families and staff of varied backgrounds. She joined the Pastoral Care Department at St. John’s in April of 2005 and for the past five years has served as the department director.

“We minister to all people,” she explains. “Sixty percent of our patients are Catholic but the remaining patients come from many diverse religions. In my department, we have a Catholic and an Orthodox priest and two residents from St. Vincent Charity who are studying to become chaplains. We work together as a team and try to visit every patient once during their hospital stay.”

Sister Kendra’s personal responsibilities as Director of Pastoral Care also include managing her staff, making sure two Eucharistic ministers visit hospital patients each day; overseeing department volunteers who handle the paperwork; and serving on the Diversity, Ethics, Mission and Values, and Bereavement committees at the hospital. Sr. Kendra’s department also prepares the Mission Dialogue each year. This program, which all hospital staff are required to attend, allows her staff to help each person ponder how she/he is living out the Mission of the Hospital. They also have prayer requests and support prayer lines where folks can call and ask for prayers or write their intentions in a prayer book outside the chapel.

One project she is extremely proud of implementing is the Tree of Life.

“When people lose a loved one, they receive a pewter ornament of the Tree of Life that is given to the staff member who lost a loved one. These ornaments

are then hung on a much larger Tree of Life in our outpatient lobby.

These ornaments will be returned to staff members at a special service in November, so they can keep these lasting mementos.”

Sister Kendra believes spiritual care helps the mind and body. “I think our Pastoral Care Department is the heart of this hospital,” she states emphatically. “People call us all the time – to listen, to share, and for comfort. We are for the people.

Spiritual care is essential for a patient’s mental and physical health. We spend a lot of time in the Emergency Room, ministering to patients and families in crisis. I believe I was called into this position because our Lord wants us to be His presence here.

“We also have fun at the Pastoral Care office. It is a very uplifting place to be.

In addition, whenever it is my turn to do the morning prayer, I sing over the hospital intercom – Amazing Grace, Shepherd Me Oh God, Our Father, etc. I see my voice as a gift given me by God. ‘What you receive as gift, give as gift.’”

Sr. Kendra explains, “Being a part of a hospital community has grown into a way of life for me. I recently was called to be with a family as their family member was passing away.

While I cannot anoint a patient, I can be with them to sing, pray with them and support them during this time of transition and loss. There is a universal call to holiness,” she concludes. “God calls each of us to His presence in His world.”

Notre Dame Global Mission:

VISITORS AND MORE VISITORS! Joyful laughter echoed through the halls of Notre Dame

Education Center in June, as Chardon Sisters warmly welcomed missionaries from Africa and India.

The first of these visitors was Sister Mukti, a seasoned Indian missionary who has been serving in Tanzania, Africa, for quite a few years. In Africa, Sister Mukti discerned the need to reach out to children in difficult situations, especially those who were orphaned due to the AIDS epidemic. In just a few years, Sister Mukti has been able to use gifts from generous donors to build the “Aloysia Home” (named after the foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame) where groups of children now live peacefully in two cottages, each with a house parent.

During her visit to Chardon, Sister Mukti continued to do “outreach,” especially among the many retired Sisters and Sisters in the Health Care Center. Sister Mukti’s mission stories were enthralling and her laughter contagious. Sister Mukti also got a taste of informal community life in a local convent where she enjoyed a barbecue and The Cavaliers’ playoffs on TV. All too soon, her 8-day visit was over!

Chardon hospitality was multiplied by six when Sisters from India and Africa arrived two weeks later, following their participation in the SND National Education Symposium in Dayton, OH. Their 4-day visit was packed with new relationships and experiences, on and off the Chardon property, including a tour of SND Heritage sites in Cleveland, and a relaxing and informative cruise on the Goodtime III. For local “Partners in Mission,” the highlight of the visit was a luncheon during which the visiting missionaries spoke of their educational ministries: Indian Sister Ruby described the challenge and privilege of education in North India where society is highly stratified according to the caste system and where girls and women are neglected.

The Sisters of Notre Dame, Patna Province, have a strong commitment to empower girls and women through formal and non-formal education.

Sr. Ruby explained that most SND education serves Tribals/Dalits (the most disadvantaged), in remote villages lacking good roads and electricity.

Sister Manisha, an Indian Sister from South India, talked about education in the Bangalore Province.

Although this province is only 10 years old, its educational ministries are very diverse, e.g. in addition to a high school and elementary schools, there are pre-schools, a teacher training college, and Sophia Opportunity School for children with Down Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, emotional and behavioral disorders, speech impairment and dyslexia. All schools have outreach programs: to the blind, orphans, the aged, and prisoners.

Indian Sister Neelima spoke of education in the Tanzania/Kenya mission, where she has been ministering for more than 16 years.

She explained that most students are from troubled family backgrounds, and that they come from every possible tribe and religious background. The gender disparity is quite evident, especially in the Maasai tribe where—until recently—women and girls were not even counted, although cows were! During her 16 years in Africa, Sister Neelima has seen a lot of positive changes, e.g.

availability of textbooks, and an updated syllabus. However, the lack of experience and education of lay teachers is quite challenging.

Following Sister Neelima’s overview of education in Africa, two young Ugandan Sisters of Notre Dame briefly shared their educational ministries, and Indian Sister Sreeja from Rome, added her own comments from her perspective as International Mission Coordinator.

Listeners were definitely impressed by the Sisters’ presentations, and follow-up actions are underway!

One of the luncheon guests, a Notre Dame Associate, hopes to organize a project through which our “Partners in Mission” can sponsor students in India, Africa, and Nicaragua. Education as Transformation A Vibrant Future INAUGURAL SND NATIONAL EDUCATION SUMMIT

This summer in June, in Dayton,

Ohio nearly 150 Sisters and lay educators ministering as teachers, administrators, directors, and provincial leadership came for the 2015 Sisters of Notre Dame National Education Summit. They came from far and wide, and represented 5 countries, 7 U.S. states, and over 40 schools and centers. The Summit brought a new energy, a sense of adventure, and a lovely soft vibe of spiritual wonder to the campus.

Sponsored by the SND National Education Office (NEO), the inaugural Summit was created to increase collaboration among the 17 U.S. SND sponsored and 38 partnership schools, and to provide resources for today’s educational settings.

Opened in 2008, the SND National Education Office (NEO) is a collaborative project of the four U.S. SND provinces (Chardon OH, Covington KY, Toledo OH, and

Thousand Oaks CA) that provides direction and support to sponsored and affiliated ministries in advancing the Educational Vision & Principles of the Sisters of Notre Dame. Led

by Sr. Mary Frances Taymans, and assisted by an Education Advisory Board, the staff of the NEO focuses its energies on a few strategic activities:

Collectively the summit attendees serve over 19,000 students from pre-k through college. Over 30 Sisters from the Chardon Province and 40 teachers and administrators from northeast Ohio schools attended the Summit – many as presenters at one of the program sessions.

Sisters Katherine Feely (John Carroll University), Jacquelyn Gusdane (Notre Dame – Cathedral Latin and Notre Dame Elementary School), and Sally Huston (St. John School) are members of the Education Advisory Board and played a critical role in the planning and delivery of the Summit.

Keynotes & Breakouts The three day agenda was packed with speakers, presentations, and discussions that explored a 21st century “Vision Forward” enriched

by SND Educational Vision, Principles and Heritage. Keynote speakers Sister Joanne Keppler, Director of Professional Learning at NDES and Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, and Sister Melannie Svoboda, author, speaker, retreat director, set the stage for seeing education as a foundation for transformation.

Sr. Joanne told the story of the rich heritage of SND education. Educators thrive when they teach from the perspective of the student, regardless of age, need or setting, and honor the spiritual call to become part of something transcendent and global.

Sr. Melannie encouraged participants to view Catholic education as a verb “Come–Go─Be” - and to pass along to students a sense of wonder.

The five SND’s Sisters visiting from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda connected U.S. participants to the wider world of Notre Dame Education.

While it is very apparent the Sisters teach and live in environments that contrast significantly with their U.S. counterparts, it was also quite clear that the SND Charism and educational Vision are thriving in their simple school buildings and challenging living conditions thousands of miles away.

The Summit also provided an opportunity to listen to the voices and learn about the experiences of five alumni who experienced Notre Dame Education in different contexts across several different decades. In

a conversation facilitated by Notre Dame College President Thomas Kruczek, the alumni shared how their experiences influenced their life journey across education, career orientation and personal fulfillment.

We also heard their hopes for Notre Dame Education going forward.

In the final presentation Marianist Fr. James Heft spoke of great writers of the past and the fact that most teachers need not fear about writing

In Memoriam SISTER MARY ELIZABETH (Elizabeth Mary BIEBELHAUSEN) was the second of the six children born to Joseph and Marie (Faulhaber) Biebelhausen.

For Betty, family was and always remained a precious gift to be treasured.

Her family was a blessing and a source of great joy during growing up days of leisure, work, and play as care for anyone in need was fostered by her loving parents.

Betty and her older sister, Jane, attended Notre Dame Academy, Cleveland—an hour’s commute from their home. After graduation, Betty entered the Sisters of Notre Dame on September 8, 1944, partly because of the prayers of her greataunt, Sister Mary Alferia Zurlinden of the Toledo province. At investment, she received the name Sister Mary Crucis.

Later she returned to her baptismal name, Elizabeth Mary.

of students and helped the mission foundation in India to grow into two flourishing provinces with its own mission in Africa. She even wrote her own cookbook, “You Can Cook, Too,” which is still in use!

Sister Elizabeth Mary returned to Chardon in 1995. Her missionary heart and experience in serving the poorest of the poor made her an integral part of the province Mission Office. In recent years, as Sister’s physical condition caused her to relinquish her personal independence, she often recommitted herself to the theme of her religious life: “God has not offered us a job to do in life. He has offered us a Covenant of Love to fulfil…even when all jobs fail.” She remained her own person, always a woman of deep prayer and hope. We are grateful for Sister’s untiring missionary heart and we thank God for the example of her faith and trust, her commitment and fidelity. May she live in the eternal embrace of our good and provident God.

SISTER MARY LOUISE

Sister Elizabeth Mary graduated from Notre Dame College, South Euclid, with a degree in home economics and began her career of teaching in the high school classroom. In 1954 Sister volunteered for the mission in India. The following year a late night phone call from Mother Mary Anselm gave her just a few days to prepare for departure. The voyage to India by freighter took almost a month. In this special call, she relied on God’s faithful love and was steadfast in her desire to minister with enthusiasm and creativity.

(Mary Louise TRIVISON) passed away on July 15, 2015 at the SND Health Care Center, Chardon. She was born on April 11, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio. Sister Mary Louise made her Profession on August 16, 1948 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The ministries of Sister Elizabeth Mary during her years (40) in India only hint at all she accomplished, especially in Jamalpur and Patna. Sister served as treasurer, driver, in maintenance, social/ pastoral worker, teacher, supervisor of kitchens and construction—she trained food service staffs, taught thousands

Mary Louise was the third of four children born to Amilio and Louise (Zaccagnini) Trivison, where family bonds were strong and the source of her great sense of community. Through the years, gatherings with the whole family, along with many “cousins’ lunches” were anticipated and treasured.

After graduating from Notre Dame Academy, Cleveland, Mary Louise entered the Sisters of Notre Dame from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, Wickliffe, and was given the name Sister Mary St. Louis after her brother Louis who had become a priest of the Cleveland Diocese. Later, she returned to her baptismal name, Mary Louise.

Sister Mary Louise was a true scholar and educator. She received a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame College, South Euclid, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland.

She earned a Diploma in Sacred Science from Regina Mundi Institute, Rome, Italy where she wrote and defended her thesis in Italian, graduating third in her class!

In 1994, Sister studied at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem for certification as a teacher of Holocaust Studies. Her ministry in education spanned almost 60 years, 49 at Notre Dame College where she impacted students by fostering an environment of peace and understanding in the classroom.

She enabled students to develop an appreciation of other faiths, cultures and races while serving as a professor of theology and Spanish. Devoted to Our Lady, Sister planned and obtained funding for Marian Center at the College to house a beautiful collection of Marian art from around the world.

Sister’s great gift was taking everything she learned to benefit others, drawing forth individual gifts and providing opportunities, especially for women and those overlooked or under-served. Sister Mary Louise used her prolific ties to people to bring focus and attention to important causes. She was a true peacemaker, serving on inter-faith councils and co-founding the Tolerance Resource Center (now the Abrahamic Center) at Notre Dame College—“fostering mutual respect among all peoples, and celebrating religious, racial and cultural diversity.”

Sister suffered much physically yet never complained and had an incredibly strong will to survive many health crises. During www.sndchardon.org

the past three years, Sister served as Scripture consultant and provided unfailing support for Notre Dame Prays, the new community prayer book. Sister Mary Louise stated, “My life is enclosed in God’s goodness and love. My religious community, my sisters, supported, nurtured, cared for, encouraged, and made service to Christ a joyful way of life.” May Sister rejoice in the arms of her Beloved.

SISTER MARY TERESA (Teresa Elizabeth LANGENDERFER) passed away on July 17, 2015 at the SND Health Care Center, Chardon.

She was born on September 30, 1927 in Swanton, Ohio and made her Profession on August 16, 1948 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Teresa was the third of eight children born to Maurice and Loretta Langenderfer. Weighing only four pounds, she was not expected to live; but surrounded by her loving family, she began to grow and thrive and was baptized Teresa in honor of the Little Flower. These were happy years where love and concern for each other were nurtured and blossomed. Already Teresa loved school. As a young child, she knew she wanted to become a teacher. The decision to enter religious life did not come as easily.

She loved participating in high school events, but as a senior, she came to realize that, as good as all these things were, she could no longer set aside God’s invitation to follow another way. Teresa entered the community in Cleveland on September 8, 1945, from Immaculate Conception Marygrove Parish, Swanton, Ohio. Her two SND cousins in Toledo and an aunt, Sister Mary Anselm, director of novices in Cleveland, offered prayerful support and encouragement. At investment, she took the name Sister Mary Alberte. Later, she returned to her baptismal name.

After two years of college, Sister Mary Teresa was missioned to teach second grade. There were 55 children in that class, and the next year, 65! By taking classes on Saturdays and during summers, Sisters of Notre Dame | Network

Sister earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from St. John College, Cleveland. She ministered to God’s little ones, teaching first or second grade for 42 years. How she loved the children— and how they loved her! One of her greatest joys was preparing students for the reception of First Holy Communion.

She remarked that it was a privilege to prepare children for Eucharist—surely the source of her gratitude and the heart of her spiritual life. Small in stature, Sister’s loving manner endeared her to the children, their families and the sisters with whom she lived.

After 29 years at St. Peter Parish, Lorain, Ohio, ministering as classroom teacher, school assistant, and pastoral minister and assisting with visiting those who were homebound, in the hospital or nursing home, Sister Mary Teresa transitioned to the Provincial Center where she continued her ministry of outreach to all she encountered each day. Sister was a simple, unassuming, hard-working, prayerful woman. Her genuine, warm smile, graciousness, gentleness and peaceful demeanor exuded a sense of well-being and welcome. The love of Jesus Christ shone in her and through her.

Sister Mary Teresa stated, “All the blessings I’ve received all these years, I just can’t thank God enough. I have such interior joy, the Lord is so good.” May she now enjoy eternal union with her Beloved that she so longed for during life. May she rest peacefully in God’s loving embrace.

SISTER MYRA (Myra Dana AVSEC), the oldest of six children born to Anthony and Nancy (Frank) Avsec, Myra learned at an early age the importance of strong family bonds to be nourished and cherished. Growing up in Cleveland and attending St. Vitus Church and School, her Slovenian heritage was fostered and celebrated. It was an integral part of Myra’s life, evidenced by her love for each family member and the many friends with whom she stayed connected through life.

Her infectious smile generated trust, easy communication and friendship.

After graduation from Notre Dame Academy, Cleveland, Myra entered the Sisters of Notre Dame on September 8, 1960. She had one cousin, Sister Mary St. Bernadine, now Sister Mary, already a member of the community. At investment Myra received the name Sister Mary Antonmarie. Later, she returned to her baptismal name.

During her first twenty-four years of ministry in food service, Sister Myra prepared thousands of meals for sisters in community, for the high school cafeteria and the boarding school. She learned quantity cooking quickly! Sister collected favorite recipes and learned about food preparation and good food choices. At times, she found this service challenging because of the time needed to prepare meals and be away from the rest of the community and its activities. The sisters with whom she ministered became a vital support in day to day living. Sister Myra nourished others spiritually by becoming a Eucharistic Minister at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Gates Mills, Ohio, and teacher’s aide in the preschool program.

She loved being with the children and used her skills as a “big sister” to help them navigate their first school experiences.

Sister Myra was a master photographer.

Her photos form a wonderful backdrop of the spaces, places and people she loved.

She saw not only with her camera lens, but with her heart. Sisters visiting from other provinces received the gift of a CD with pictures of the Chardon property displaying the beauty of creation in all seasons. Her interest in genealogy prompted research on family history—a lasting legacy to her family.

Having undergone several surgeries and health issues, Sister Myra was no stranger to suffering and chronic pain. In 2013, she was diagnosed with a terminal llness.

Her immediate response—“I am not afraid of dying”—gave evidence of the strong and practical faith underlying her daily life. Her decision to forego further treatment inspired all who walked closely with her. In this life, Sister counted on God’s love, the love of her family and the compassionate love of her sisters and friends. May she rejoice now in new life found in God’s eternal embrace.
